Ciara: No problem, grandma.

Julie: I know I would never ask you ordinarily--I know how busy you are--but chloe took the day off again, and I just-- I'm overwhelmed.

[Laughs]

Ciara: So do you need me to fold the napkins?

Julie: Yes, please. Just simple elegance, just like so.

[Chuckles]

[Exhales] It's so good to see you out of the hospital. Are you okay now, darling?

Ciara: Yeah, I'm fine. I just, I'm--I wanna put the whole incident behind me.

Julie: Of course, of course. So traumatic. To think that nut job jordan ridgeway nearly killed you twice... you know, people tell me, "oh, she's such a sweet girl." Well, obviously, she went off the rails this time. Course, that's no surprise, considering her family. Clyde weston for a father and ben for a brother--

Ciara: Grandma, can you just stop, please?

Julie: I'm sorry. I know ben is your boyfriend.

Ciara: He's not my boyfriend, actually.

Julie: What?

Ciara: Not anymore.

Leo: Ah...benjy, after all this gabi and stefan drama, what do you say we grab a drink? Just the two of us.

Ben: No, thanks. And I'm, uh--

Leo: You're straight. I know. It is painfully obvious. But I just meant as friends. We can go to doug's place, have a kiki.

Ben: A kiki? That some kind of new drink?

Leo: Boy, you are straight.

Ben: That's right. I'm also working.

Leo: Fine. Your loss. Anyway, I should find out if i have a new daddy.

Ben: Daddy? Like a sugar daddy?

Leo: I only wish that's what I meant. Good-bye, big, beautiful ben.

Ben: Take care, leo.

Diana I'm sorry for everything you're going through, john.

John: Thank you.

Diana: And I'm here for you. Whatever you happen to need.

Kayla: John.

John: How is she?

Kayla: She's back in her room. She's still unconscious.

John: All right. Can I see her?

Kayla: Of course you can.

Diana: Would you like me to go in with you, john?

John: Uh, no--no--no, thanks. I need to be alone with my wife.

Diana: I understand. But I'm guessing you haven't eaten in a while, so I'm gonna go pick some food up for you.

John: Thanks.

[Unsettling music]

Diana: Here's hoping the third time's a charm. And hopefully, by the time I get back... it'll be good night for good... marlena.

Eric: Brady, this is, uh--

Brady: No, this--this is what? It's not what it looks like? 'Cause it kinda looks like history repeating itself, brother. Kinda looks like you moving in on one of your brother's women yet again.

[Tense music]

Rex: What's going on here?

Brady: Rex, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... there is something you need to know.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Rex: What--what bad news are you talking about?

Brady: Kristen dimera is alive.

Eric: What?

Brady: Yeah, apparently, she's the one that poisoned marlena.

Rex: Wait a minute--I thought she died in that--that chemical explosion in nashville.

Brady: Yeah. Everybody-- everybody thought that. But xander ended up being alive too.

Eric: This doesn't make sense. Who saw her?

Brady: There was a nurse that claimed she saw kristen...and she threatened to kill her if she didn't let her in marlena's office and the pharmacy.

Sarah: Which nurse?

Brady: Her name was shelly santos. She's being questioned by the P.D. The point is, I was looking for a quiet place to make a call to some of my guys to see if they could keep an eye out for her and, uh...that's when I ran into you two.

Sarah: [Small laugh] What a weird coincidence, 'cause eric was just telling me all the awful things that kristen has done to your family.

Brady: Is that right? That's--that's what I walked in on, huh, you two talking about kristen?

John: I can't even believe that we are back here again, kayla. You know, last year, we almost lost her bec-- ohh... I can't believe I let this happen--what the hell is the matter with me? Was I so damn naive to think that kristen couldn't be a threat? I should have known better when they never found her body, but I let my damn guard down! Damn it, I'm sorry, doc. I let you down, honey.

Kayla: You know what? The police are out searching for kristen. You have a guard posted at the door. You're right here by her side. She's safe. Nothing's gonna happen to her now.

[Intense music builds]

Ben: Hey, you have a minute?

Stefan: Sure. What's up?

Ben: First of all, I wanted to make sure it was okay I let that leo starke guy in--he insisted he had some type of business offer. He seemed harmless enough.

Stefan: Yeah, yeah, yeah, as annoying as he is, in the end, he may prove useful.

Ben: Good. Second of all, all the new security cameras have been installed, mainly in front of the kids' and chloe's room.

Stefan: Good. Keeping them safe is my top priority.

Ben: I know that. You made that loud and clear. Anything else I can do for you?

Stefan: No. No. You've been working around the clock. Why don't you take a break, get outta here, go do something and clear your head.

Ben: Well, thank you, but, uh, I don't have anywhere else to be.

Julie: So you've finally seen the light about ben? Yes? No.

Ciara: Actually, grandma, um, he broke up with me. And I'll explain why... if you promise you won't bash him, okay?

Julie: My darling, I'll try. Go ahead, tell me.

Ciara: Ben was totally freaked out after he saved me from jordan. And even though she's his sister, he's not sure that he would have been able to stop himself from hurting her if rafe hadn't come in.

Julie: I see.

Ciara: And because of that, he, uh... he's afraid he might be a danger to me.

Julie: He may have a point there.

Ciara: No, grandma-- ben would never hurt me.

Julie: Darling, you say that now, but if he himself has doubts...

Ciara: I think that ben is falling into a self-fulfilling prophecy. He seems himself as someone who's too damaged to live a normal life, to be a decent person, someone who is deserving of love and respect. And without someone telling him that that is not true... grandma, eventually, he's gonna become the monster that he fears he already is...

John: [Whispering] My precious wife. You know you are the love of my life. I-I think I remember... during our vows, you said that you wanted us to grow old together. Okay. Well, I consider that a promise, and that's a promise that you can't break, and I'm gonna hold you to that, doc, because we got a long...we got a long way to go, girl.

[Ahem] So don't you bail on me now.

[Crying] Don't you bail on me now, baby. Come on. Come on.

[Knock on door]

Leo: Hi. I heard what happened, and i just wanted to... see how you were doing. Is it okay if I come in?

John: Yeah, sure, sure.

Leo: Is she doing all right?

John: She'S...stable for the moment.

Leo: I-I know your focus is on your wife right now. But did you have a chance to look at the dna results?

John: Yes, I did.

Leo: And?

John: It's true, leo. You are my son.

[Emotional music]

Eric: You know, brady, we should go check on my mom.

Brady: Yeah. Let's do that.

Eric: Let's go then.

Rex: Guys, if there's anything you need from me, you just say the word.

Eric: Absolutely. Thanks, rex.

Brady: That's nice of you. You're lucky to have a good brother like him.

Eric: I am. Mm-hmm. I know that.

Rex: [Laughs] The tension between those two... man...ha. I mean, I didn't realize how bad things were until brady came over to eric's apartment last night, and they got into it.

Sarah: Yeah, eric told me.

Rex: I just hope they can work things out before it turns into...all that war.

Sarah: Me too.

Rex: I have to admit, I'm really concerned for my brother. He just seems so on edge.

Sarah: He's just worried about his mom. Just...hope I didn't make things worse.

Rex: What? You? How?

Sarah: You know I have a knack for...saying and... doing the wrong things.

Rex: No, you don't ever say and do the wrong--I say and do the wrong things. I mean, I'm the one who's constantly has his foot in his mouth. You uplift people, you raise their spirits, you comfort them like I'm sure you were just doing with eric.

Sarah: I don't know about that.

Rex: I do. Chloe told me that you were there for him. You were his rock after nicole died. And I...I think that's great. Or, I did think that was great until...

Sarah: Until...

Rex: Look, sarah, I-- I think it's wonderful that you and eric have made up. You're on better terms, you're close, but... I don't know, I have to admit, you know, brady told me something that I just--I can't get it out of my head.

Sarah: What did brady tell you?

Rex: He told me that... eric goes after his brother's girlfriends... and I should watch out because he might try to make a move on you.

Eric: Brady, got a minute?

Brady: No, you know, I just wanna check on marlena. I wanna find my dad.

Kayla: Oh, well, your dad is in with marlena right now. But, uh, I don't think that she should have any other visitors right now.

Eric: How's she doing?

Kayla: Well, she's the same. Her body just needs time to heal. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Brady: Well, I'm glad there's some good news.

Kayla: Everything all right with you guys?

Eric: There's no problem here.

Kayla: Good. Well, I'll tell your dad that you're here.

Brady: You know, for an ex-priest, you're a hell of a liar.

Eric: I appreciate you not saying anything to rex before.

Brady: Hey, no problem. But on second thought, i probably should have. I mean, rex needs to know what an untrustworthy bastard his brother really is, don't you think? For the love of god, eric, after everything that we went through, how could you do this again?

Diana: Damn this waiting. Will the woman just put me out of my misery and die already?

[John sobbing] John.

[John sobbing] What's wrong?

John: We've lost her.

Diana: Oh, god. I am so sorry.

John: Right before she took her last breath... she opened her eyes and she said that...she wanted me to be happy. She wanted me to, uh...to move on with someone else.

Diana: How selfless of her.

John: I thought about those words... and the only person I would wanna move on with is you.

Diana: Oh, john.

John: I mean, we have a son together. I've missed most of his life. I would just love for you, me, and leo to be a real family together--what do you think?

Diana: Oh... that sounds wonderful.

John: Oh... wait, wait. I-I can't--I can't do this right now.

Diana: Oh, yes. Too soon. Too soon.

John: Naw. I just can't do this with doc lying in here like that--too creepy.

Diana: [Laughing]

John: That's better!

[Both laugh] Now, where were we?

[Both moaning]

Diana: [Whispers] Oh, yes. Soon. Soon, my darling.

Leo: I'm sorry. I don't know why I did that.

John: That's okay, I get it.

Leo: I just--

John: I get it and, uh... and I appreciate it.

Leo: I never in a million years would have thought... if I'd known you were my father, maybe... maybe things would have been different.

John: Well... we're together now. And we will make up for lost time, I can promise you that. But that's gonna have to be put on hold for right now until doc is up and outta here.

Leo: Of course, yes. I understand.

John: Yeah, thanks.

Leo: Um... I-I heard that she was deliberately poisoned?

John: [Exhales]

Leo: Um... you know, I-- I could be totally wrong here. I just have this nagging feeling. Do you think it...could have been my mother who tried to kill marlena?

Julie: My darling, I know you want to save ben... help him overcome his demons, but... but why attach yourself to a man who could snap at any moment?

Ciara: Okay, now, that is really hypocritical.

Julie: Excuse me?

Ciara: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be disrespectful. Just think about it, grandma. When abigail was going through her mental illness, you were a huge, huge supporter of her and chad.

Julie: Abigail did not murder three people!

Ciara: Well, she tried! She locked vivian and kate and marlena up in the dimera tunnels, and they would have suffocated if john black hadn't found them in time. And abigail actually did kill one person--andre.

Julie: I think she did the world a favor there--god forgive me for saying that--but she was terribly stressed with ptsd, which was brought on by ben.

Ciara: It was also caused by multiple personality disorder. Mental illness. But she changed. She got help, and now she is living a happy, healthy life again with everyone supporting her and chad. Grandma, if abigail can be cured, why can't ben? All his doctors, including marlena, think that he is well enough to be out in the world and...

[Sighs] Why can't anyone just accept that and give him the same chance abigail got? Maybe if the entire population of salem would stop calling ben a monster, maybe he wouldn't see himself as one.

Stefan: You really have no place to go? So... you are determined to stay away from miss ciara brady.

Ben: Look, I have to forget her.

Stefan: Even though you love her?

Ben: Hey...however I feel, I don't want to run the risk of hurting her.

Stefan: Do you really think you would?

Ben: I don't know. I just have this fear of this darkness inside of me, and i don't know if I'm ever gonna be able to fully control it.

Sarah: Brady is just lashing out. He has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to eric and me.

Rex: Right, right. I--I--you're right. You would never go after my own brother. Although, you might be justified in doing so, based on what happened with noelle and me. But look, I...I'm not worried about you. I'm more worried about eric. Not that he would ever purposefully hurt me, but it-- he could get attached to you. I mean...what guy wouldn't get attached to you? You're kinda perfect.

Sarah: You know that's not true.

Rex: Well... I think it's true. But given what happened with eric and brady over nicole, I--

Sarah: Look, whatever you're thinking, I-- you never have to question your brother's loyalty to you. He's never come on to me, and he never would. It's just...not who he is.

Eric: I want you to just hear me out.

Brady: You want me--[Laughs] What, about what I saw? I don't need to hear it. Rex does.

Eric: No. It's not what it looked like.

Brady: What was it? I mean, did your and sarah's lips just happen to bump into each other by accident? Let me ask you something. How long have you and sarah been doing this behind rex's back?

Eric: Brady, that is not what is happening.

Brady: So what are you doing? Just--you're gonna deny it all?

Eric: Listen. I'm not pursuing sarah horton. That's all I'm gonna tell you. That's all you need to know.

[Dramatic chords]

John: Why would you think your mother would try to kill doc?

Leo: Well, I don't know if you've noticed, but she kinda has a thing for you.

John: Yeah, well, she knows that I'm 100% committed to marlena.

Leo: Which is a good motive for her to want her out of the way.

John: To poison her? God, leo. No, no, no, trust me when I tell you that that is not the diana that I remember.

Leo: [Exhales] Living with my fa--with richard was a total nightmare. His anger, his darkness. She and I were both traumatized by it, damaged. So do I think she could have done this? I know that she's capable of anything--even killing your wife.

[Ominous chords]

Ciara: Um...

[Laughs] So what do you need me to do now, grandma? You need me to clean the glasses or something?

Julie: Ciara, I am sorry that you're so upset, but--

Ciara: But what, grandma?

Julie: [Laughs] Sometimes you remind me so much of your mother and father.

Ciara: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Julie: Good? It's wonderful! You know that. Bo and hope were always fighting for the underdog because... because they had big, loving hearts just like you have. They always wanted to give everybody...a chance.

Ciara: Maybe mom just needs to be reminded of that?

Julie: Well... she's not likely to be so open-minded where her own daughter is concerned... when she's worried about your safety. 'Cause you're precious to her. As you are to me.

Ciara: Then... can you try to see this any other way...any other way, grandma? I mean...grandpa was a conman when he first came to salem, and people gave him a chance just like they gave abigail. I mean, people can change, grandma.

Julie: Under most circumstances, I would say yes, everybody deserves a second chance, but darling... a third and a fourth? Ben may be all rehabilitated now, but what if he has a relapse? What if he needs to hurt somebody and the somebody's you?

Ciara: He would not hurt me. He would never do that to me.

Julie: Well, what if he hurts someone else? Could you live with that?

Ciara: Grandma, he has turned himself around. Okay, yes, he did something that I didn't approve of, which was working for stefan dimera, but at least he is way far away from that right now.

Julie: Well, actually...

Ciara: Actually what, grandma? What?

Julie: I have to assume he did not tell you. He is working for stefan dimera again.

Stefan: You know what i think? I think... you've been reading too many "incredible hulk" comics.

[Ben chuckles] Whatever you've got inside of you, ben...isn't going to turn you into this big, scary monster.

Ben: I almost killed my sister.

Stefan: She was trying to attack ciara--what were you supposed to do?

Ben: No you don't understand. I come from a messed-up family, okay? My father--a terrible, violent dude. I have his blood running through my veins, and not only that, he engrained this sadistic behavior in me since I was a kid. Nature or nurture--it doesn't matter, man--either way, I'm screwed!

Stefan: I do understand. I-I get the whole sins of our-- our father fear. I didn't know my father stefano, that fine gentleman over there on my wall. But I do know that he was obsessed with marlena evans. Which may partially explain my obsession with abigail, or her alter, whatever you wanna call it. But that doesn't mean I'm--I'm doomed to obsess over only unobtainable women or cursed to walk this earth alone, ben. Look, just because our fathers, you know, directly or indirectly set us up for failure doesn't mean that we have to fall into that trap, understand? We can...we can break the cycle. We can be decent people. We can have love in our lives. But you gotta want it. Gotta want it.

Ben: Do we deserve it?

Stefan: I absolutely believe I do. But you must decide that for yourself. Take a break.

[Uneasy music]

Leo: You must think I'm awful for trying to pin this on my own mother.

John: Well, it's--it's obvious that, uh... the two of you have a difficult relationship.

Leo: Difficult? Try nonexistent. She and I never connected. She claims that she didn't understand me. And I have never forgiven her for staying with that monster i thought was my father.

John: I'm sorry, leo. Sounds really rough all the way around.

Leo: Yeah, I-I thought that things would be better after he was gone, but she even blamed me for his death.

John: Why?

[Dramatic music]

Ciara: So ben is working for stefan again. How do you know that?

Julie: Well, as I mentioned before, chloe took the day off because ben is installing some security cameras at the dimera mansion.

Ciara: Right. Well, I, uh...I guess i understand why he took the job. He...he needed the money, and no one else would hire him and... since we're not even together anymore...

Julie: Ciara, would you mull this over? Do you think being around a guy like stefan could drive ben into a downward spiral... again?

Ben: Is your son right? Can we break the cycle? Or are we just doomed to follow in our fathers' footsteps? Well, clyde used to always tell me how much he loved my mom... right before he beat her to within an inch of her life. She lived her whole life in fear. As much as I wanna be with ciara... I'm not sure if I wanna run the risk of condemning her to that same fate.

Rex: Hey, sarah. Look, I promise I will not let brady's words get to me. Especially since eric has been so supportive of you and me.

Sarah: It's true.

Rex: Has he talked to you, encouraged you to accept my marriage proposal?

Sarah: Yeah. Yeah, he has.

Rex: Any progress?

Sarah: Rex.

Rex: [Laughing] I'm sorry. I told you I wouldn't push, and I won'T. Although, you do know it's like the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Sarah: Yes, you've made that very clear.

Rex: I just... I wanna wake up every morning next to your beautiful face. And I wanna go to bed every night... next to your beautiful face. You do know how much I love you, don't you?

Sarah: I do.

Rex: [Small laugh] And I... I can't wait to hear those two words, hopefully on our wedding day.

Brady: So you're not pursuing sarah.

Eric: I'm not pursuing sarah.

Brady: See, I'm confused.

[Laughs] I mean, what does that mean? Does that mean she's pursuing you? Did she force you to kiss her? Oh, my god, were you harassed? Are you okay?

Eric: Listen, I care about sarah, but she and rex are in a relationship, and I respect that.

Brady: Like you respect that nicole and I were a couple?

Eric: Why don't you just do the decent thing, brady, I mean for all of us, you know? For my mom, your dad. I mean, my god, your dad, he's going through hell right now. My mom, I mean, who knows if she's even gonna survive what happened to her? So why don't you do it for our family...for all our sakes? Just don't talk about that kiss. Can I count on you for that?

John: Diana blamed you for her husband's death?

Leo: She blamed me for everything that went wrong in her miserable life, but I swear to you, richard cooper's death was a freak accident.

John: Okay, okay, okay, just--just--just take it down a notch.

Leo: [Exhales] Okay. You know what? I'd rather not talk about him anyway. We just found out that you're my dad--can we talk about you? We know that my childhood was hell, but what about yours? What were your hobbies? Slotcars? No, no, wait--I'm guessing sports. Basketball? Baseball!

John: Baseball.

Leo: Ah! I knew it. And what's your net worth? Did I say that out loud?

John: Yeah, you said that.

Leo: Sorry. And what about all that superhero stuff, all your nicknames?

John: Leo, leo, trying to... explain my life is a little complicated, especially when it comes to my past. That's why marlena's so important to me. Through all the chaos and confusion, she was always my anchor, my lifeboat. And to this day, I don't know how I would survive without her.

[Rapid beeping] Sweetheart? Doc--honey?

[Flatline tone] Honey--no, no, no, no, no! We need a doctor in here! Help! We need some help right now! Kayla, what's happening?

Kayla: John, clear the room, please.

[Flatline tone]

John: What's happening?

Kayla: I need you to go, john, please.

John: No, I will not leave her ever! Come on, doc, come on, baby.

[Softly] Come on, come on... presenting downtherecare with cottonelle.

[Doorbell rings]

Sarah: I know how you feel, and I know that you want me to say yes to your marriage proposal, but... I have to be 100% sure before i can make that commitment.

Rex: I totally get it, really, I do. And although it's completely against my nature, I will be patient.

[Beep beep]

Sarah: There's an emergency with marlena.

Leo: Mother.

Diana: No, no, matthew, no time for pleasantries. I just got john his favorite-- french dip and fries, and I know he must be starving by now--

Leo: It's not a good time.

Diana: Why not?

Leo: I just left him in marlena's room. She's flatlined.

Diana: Oh, my god. That's terrible.

Leo: You really think so? Or is this exactly what you wanted?

Eric: Please, brady. You know damn well if you tell rex what you saw, it'll be pointless, it'll be destructive. Especially right now with my mom. She's fighting for her life.

Rex: Hey, guys.

Brady: What's going on?

Rex: What's happened to marlena?

Eric: John's with her right now--why?

Rex: Well, sarah got a text, said it was an emergency.

Brady: Oh.

Rex: Okay. I don't know what's going on with you two right now, but I can seriously feel the tension. So you know what? You gotta pull it together, for marlena's sake.

Brady: You're right. No, he's right--all that matters is family. I think...I think everything else can wait.

[High-pitched whine]

Kayla: Clear! Oh, come on. Come on, marlena. Clear!

Sarah: No change?

Kayla: Increase to 250 joules.

Sarah: Ready?

John: Come on, doc.

Kayla: Clear!

John: Come on, baby. Fight, doc! Fight for your life! Fight for us now! Come on.

Sarah: John, just give us a little bit of room.

Kayla: Okay, clear!

John: [Breathing hard] Come on, what are you doing? What are you doing? Why are you stopping? What's going on?

[Flatline tone] No. Kayla, don't do this, baby. Come on, don't do this, kayla. Don't do this.

Kayla: [Softly] I'm sorry.

[Somber music]
