Kayla: Thank god. I have never needed a cup of coffee more. Well, actually I think a cosmo might be better.

Sarah: [Chuckles] That was one of the crazier er shifts I've had in a while.

Kayla: Hm, but we made it through the storm, right?

Sarah: Mm-hmm, yes. And I can happily say that at least for now, this place is totally dead.

[Laughs]

John: Babe--

[Dark music] What the hell just happened? Doc? Hey, hey, hey, honey. Sweetheart? Doc? Doc? Doc, come on now.

Kayla: You are aware that we've jinxed ourselves now by celebrating the peace and quiet? Any second, a, uh, jumbo jet is gonna crash into a circus train right in the middle of town.

[Both laugh]

Sarah: Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted.

Kayla: Listen, sarah, you know, I just want you to know, I appreciate all your hard work. I know that we have been understaffed here. I'm hoping that, with rex coming onboard, he'll lighten the load.

Sarah: Rex? What are you talking about?

Kayla: I thought you knew that, uh, he applied for the attending position here.

Sarah: No, he didn't say a word to me.

[Soft solemn music]

Eric: Hey, rex, thanks again for dinner. That was some world class chili.

Rex: Oh, man, it's the least I could so, since I haven't been working, although that might be about to change.

Eric: Yeah, what--you-- you got a job offer?

Rex: No, I actually had an interview with kayla at the hospital, and it went pretty well, so, um, my freeloading days might be coming to an end.

Eric: So, you got a place of your own?

Rex: Well, if sarah accepts my proposal, I was hoping that she and I could buy a house together.

Eric: Yeah, that would be something. [Laughs]

Rex: Yeah, so, again, I'm hopeful, but, um, thank you for putting in a good word for me.

Eric: Yeah, but like I said, I can't promise anything I said got to her.

Rex: Yeah, but you mean a lot to her, eric, and to me, by the way.

[Knocking on door]

Eric: Yeah. Hey.

Brady: Hey.

Eric: What do you want?

Brady: I need to talk to you. Hi, rex.

Rex: Brady.

Eric: Brady, what do you want?

Brady: Listen, look, I know we're not exactly on speaking terms right now, but I think there's something we both can agree on. Holly should not be living with stefan dimera. I need to know if I can count on you to get her the hell out of there.

Stefan: Check...and mate.

Chloe: Ah. Really?

Stefan: Sorry. [Chuckles] Really.

Chloe: I didn't even see that one coming.

Stefan: You put up a hell of a fight. Look, you're getting better each time we play. That's what's important.

Chloe: Oh, yeah, what did you beat me in, like, eight minutes this time?

Stefan: [Chuckles]

Chloe: I demand a rematch.

Stefan: Rematch? Yeah. Well, I suppose, uh--I suppose we could play again. But I'd much rather pick up where we left off.

Chloe: Oh, really?

Stefan: Mm-hmm.

Chloe: Where did we leave off?

Stefan: [Clears throat] Maybe I could refresh your memory.

[Dynamic music]

Chloe: [Chuckles]

Sonny: What are you doing here? We're not supposed to be seen together.

Will: Why? It's just you and me, and henderson of course, but I don't--I don't think he'll say anything.

Sonny: I've been waiting for you to text me.

Will: Well, I'm here in person. Little bit better, don't you think?

Sonny: Wait, did john crack diana's safe? Did he find something?

Will: That's what I came here to tell you. Not only did he crack the safe, he got leo to recant his statement to the D.A.

Sonny: Are you serious?

Will: Ted's not gonna press charges against us. Sonny, it's over.

Sonny: [Exhales] What? Oh, my god, are you saying--

Will: I'm saying we're free! We're free. There's nothing to stop us from being together.

[Light music]

[Dark music]

[Beeping]

Diana: Oh, god. Oh, god, it's gone.

Leo: Looking for something, mommy?

You know what this is, don't you?

Diana: May I explain?

Leo: No explanation necessary. You've been holding onto this evidence to use as an insurance policy against me, your own son.

Diana: No, no, no. No, no, no, it's not like that.

Leo: Of course it is. This envelope contains the only definitive proof that I killed my father, richard cooper.

Diana: Oh, man, you--

Leo: However, that raises an interesting question, doesn't it, mom? Was richard cooper actually my father? Or is my real father the one and only john black?

John: Oh, no pulse. You're not breathing either, baby. What is going on here? I can't even believe this is happening! Sweetheart? Honey? Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.

[Sweeping orchestration]

[Tense music]

Kayla: Sarah, I'm sorry i sprung the whole rex working here thing on you. I just assumed that you knew.

Sarah: No, no, no, no, it's--it's fine. I'm sure he just wanted to surprise me.

Kayla: Well, he told me that the two of you were working things out, in fact that you were even talking about marriage again.

Sarah: Rex is talking about marriage. I'm fine taking things slow.

Kayla: 'Cause you're not over how much he hurt you.

[Soft solemn music]

Sarah: That and... other reasons.

Eric: Chloe's only staying with stefan temporarily. She feels safe there.

Brady: She--are you hearing yourself? "Safe"? You think there's anything safe about living with stefan dimera? You--you know what he did to abigail, right? How about what he did to gabi? You know damn well when that guy wants something or someone--

Eric: Wait, wait, wait, you're saying stefan wants a relationship with chloe?

Brady: That's exactly what I'm saying, so we need to get her the hell out of there before he ruins her life.

Chloe: [Chuckles] Look, i thought I made it clear that I wasn't here for--

Stefan: No, I know, look, I know it's not why you came here to stay, and I know it's not why I offered. But I kissed you, and I felt something, and I think you did too, so...

Chloe: Stefan...

[Holly screaming over monitor] Oh, my god, holly!

Stefan: [Stammers]

Chloe: [Exhales] You okay now?

Holly: Mm-hmm.

Chloe: Yeah, it's okay.

Stefan: What happened?

Chloe: Uh, poor kid had a nightmare, I think. Couldn't get her settled upstairs, so I figured I'd bring her down for a little bit. Okay, let's sit here and get cozy.

[Grunts] I'll bring you juice or some milk, and you'll feel better soon, okay? I promise.

Stefan: You okay?

Chloe: It's just when i heard her scream, I thought--

Stefan: You thought someone got to her? As long as you are under my roof, nothing will happen to you, that little girl, or parker, I promise you, okay?

Eric: It was never about holly, was it? It's just that you're jealous that chloe is living with stefan.

Brady: No, no, no. Chloe's my friend, all right?

Rex: Sounds like she's more than that. At least you want her to be.

Brady: I want her to be safe.

Rex: If you really cared about that, you'd butt the hell out.

Brady: Whoa... "but the hell out"? Speaking of butting out, who invited you into this conversation, rex?

Rex: I was almost involved in a shootout at doug's place, okay? 'Cause you hired a bodyguard for her and didn't tell her about it.

Brady: Yeah, well, I'm not going to apologize for trying to protect chloe.

Rex: Well, how do you think she'd feel about you being here right now?

Eric: No, he doesn't care how she feels. That's the whole point. I mean, the only thing he does care about is himself and what benefits him.

Brady: [Chuckles] Don't you lecture me. I'm the only one here trying to protect holly and chloe from dimera, that's all. I mean, do you care about holly at all?

Eric: Holly means more to me than anything in this world, and I'm not gonna be a part of you helping to get close to chloe, especially when you're the reason that she's in the house in the first place.

Sarah: This is so unlike me. I--I--mostly, I get myself in trouble for being too impulsive, you know? I feel something, and I act on it, for better or for worse. But I hate this. I hate feeling wishy-washy.

Kayla: You know, sarah, if you are having doubts, I think you're right about making a commitment right now. And don't let rex or anybody else pressure you into doing it.

Sarah: How'd I know you'd say that?

Kayla: And listen, if you are uncomfortable with him working here, I can schedule his hours different than yours.

John: Help! I need some help in here!

Kayla: That's john.

[Tense music]

Diana: Is john black your father? Why would you ask me that?

Leo: Because he told me.

Diana: He told you?

Leo: Yeah. He broke in here. He cracked your safe. I walked in, found him holding this envelope. He offered to give it to me in exchange for my help.

Diana: What kind of help?

Leo: To--to clear will and sonny. When I balked, he dropped the bomb that he was my dad... according to you, anyway. All that time, mom, you allowed that abusive monster to raise me, and then you let me think that I killed him, that i murdered my own father.

Diana: All right, please, let's sit down. Let's talk about--

Leo: Enough talk! Is it true?

Is john my father?

Sonny: Ah, thank you so much, dad. You have no idea how happy this makes me. Yes, we will celebrate for sure. I love you. Okay, I'll talk to you soon. It's official. Because leo refused to testify, the case has been dropped!

Will: I told you, I told you.

Sonny: Oh, my god, I can't believe it. I can't believe that it's real.

Will: Well, believe it.

Sonny: It's just every time we've gone down this path, leo has come up with some new scheme to destroy our lives.

Will: I know, but not this time. He's got nothing left to blackmail us with. This is real, sonny. Nothing is gonna come between us.

Sonny: Oh, my god, we can finally be together. I cannot wait to tell the whole world.

Will: Oh, hang on... not quite yet.

[Suspenseful music]

Chloe: All right, you look like you're feeling better. Here's a sippy. Okay. I promise nothing is gonna hurt you. Okay? You wanna try to go upstairs and go night-night again?

Stefan: Is there any--is there anything I can do to help?

Chloe: Ah, I don't think so. When I went and got her, she was crying, and seemed scared, because she misses nicole, and I just don't know what to do about that.

Stefan: You mind if I try?

Chloe: Uh, I don't know. She doesn't really warm up easily to people. [Chuckles]

Stefan: Come on, just let me, I don't know...

Chloe: Okay. [Chuckles] Thank you.

[Soft music]

Stefan: Hey. Hey, holly. Hi. Listen, do you mind--do you mind if I show you something really cool that's important to me? Okay? Can I show you something? Huh? Yeah?

Brady: I tried to get chloe to move into the kiriakis mansion, okay, but victor didn't want her to stay there--

Eric: That's not what I'm talking about. You and I both know if nicole was still alive, holly would be living with her mother, not chloe and stefan.

Brady: [Groans] How many times are we gonna do this, huh? How many times have I apologized to you about forcing nicole to leave town? I am sorry, again and again. But I'm tired of you holding me responsible for her death.

Eric: Because you are responsible.

Brady: No, I'm not! What about kristen? What about xander? Did you forget about them?

Eric: Oh, there's plenty of blame to go around. They were just psychopaths. You were supposed to be a decent person.

Brady: And so were you, but that didn't stop you from going after the woman that i loved behind my back, right? And you're still not gonna take responsibility for that. You better just keep on blaming me instead of yourself on that one, huh, brother?

Eric: Get out of my house.

[Tense music]

Brady: Rex, I would watch out for this guy if I were you. He has a tendency to go after his brothers' women. I sure hope that doesn't happen to you.

John: Just hang in there. You stay with me. Real help is coming. It's on its way.

Kayla: John? John, what happened?

John: I don't know, I walked in, and she was like this. She wasn't breathing.

Sarah: She is now, but her breaths are shallow, and her pulse is thready.

Kayla: Marlena? It's kayla. Can you hear me?

John: Hey, baby...

Kayla: Come on, hang on.

Sarah: Hi, this is dr. Sarah horton. We need a crash team to room 326, S.T.A.T.

John: What the hell is happening with her, kayla? What's happening?

[Dramatic music]

[Tense music]

Diana: I never wanted you to find out this way... but, yes, yes, it is true. John is your father.

Leo: [Distressed breathing]

I spent years...

my entire childhood being tormented by that man... beaten down physically, emotionally.

Why, mother? Why would you put us through the horror that was my childhood?

[Scoffs] Unless...

Diana: Matthew?

Leo: It's a lie, isn't it?

Diana: What? What are you talking about?

Leo: John is not my father. You just want him to believe that he is.

Diana: No!

Leo: Yes! I know a grift when I see one. You saw an opportunity, and you took it. [Scoffs] You still love him, and you would do anything to be with him, right?

Diana: Yes, I won't deny it. I want john back.

We do what we have to do to survive in this world.

[Monitors beeping]

Sarah: She hasn't complained to either of you about experiencing any symptoms?

Kayla: She seemed perfectly normal.

John: Could this be some kind of residual effect of what happened last summer? Like a heart attack or a stroke?

Kayla: No, her heart rhythm is normal. It's the rate that's a little high.

[Rapid beeping]

Sarah: Her bp is bottoming out. Her pulse ox is dropping.

John: What's happening?

Sarah: And her breaths are labored. She--she's slipping.

Kayla: We're gonna have to intubate.

John: No, no, no, no, no...

Sarah: John, can you please go wait in the hall?

John: No, no, no, please...

Sarah: John? John?

John: Keep working. I need to stay here.

Kayla: No, he's fine. Let him stay. You know, hang on a second here.

John: Come on, doc.

Kayla: You know what, I know what's going on.

John: What's happening?

Kayla: She's having an allergic reaction. She's in anaphylactic shock.

Kayla: I need one milligram epi iv push, and a 50-milligram drip of diphenhydramine.

John: Allergic reaction to what?

Sarah: We don't know yet. Does marlena have any allergies that you know of?

John: No--oh, yeah, yeah. Penicillin. Allergic reaction when she was a teenager.

Kayla: Is she taking any antibiotics now?

John: No, negative.

Sarah: Could she have accidentally taken penicillin?

John: She is very careful to avoid any exposure to penicillin. I can't even imagine how she came into contact with it.

[Tense music]

Leo: So, are you admitting that john isn't my father?

Diana: God, I hate it when you always think the worst of me.

Leo: You have a safe with evidence that you could use to blackmail me, your own son, and now you wanna act like I'm hurting your feelings?

Diana: I would never have used that against you.

Leo: Then why hold onto it?

Diana: So nobody else could! For years, I have protected you from the consequences of killing richard.

Leo: Because you know he deserved it.

Diana: Because I love you... and I blame myself for subjecting you to all that suffering.

Leo: Why? Why did you let me believe that that monster was my father if it wasn't true?

Diana: I thought it was the right choice. He was there, and he promised to take care of us.

Leo: [Scoffs] What about john?

Diana: John? John was taken.

[Dark music] He and I had the most wonderful relationship... as long as he thought marlena was dead. But when she came back, I knew it was time for me to disappear. But I honestly thought we would have a good life with richard.

Leo: No, no, no, you thought that you would have a good life. You never shared any of it with me. I graduated from high school, you didn't give me a dime.

Diana: Because I wanted you to make your own way.

Leo: Well, I've done that, and I've sure made a mess of things.

Diana: Yes. Yes, you have made mistakes, especially when you got in over your head with will and sonny.

Leo: No, what I did was almost get myself killed. And now it's over. I have nothing. I have nobody.

Diana: No, no, you do not say that. You do not give up. You and I both have a right to be happy... and neither of us will stop until we get that.

Sonny: What's the matter? I mean, don't you wanna go to the square with a bullhorn and get some giant billboards and announce to the whole world that we can finally be together?

Will: [Laughs] That--that-- that does sound great. We can do that later. But right now, I don't wanna go anywhere, I don't wanna tell anybody. All I wanna do is this.

[Gentle music]

Um, what do you say we-- we take this up to, uh, your bedroom?

Sonny: I'm still kind of technically married, you know? I don't know...

Will: Mm-hmm, not for long. Come on.

Stefan: See, I had a little girl once. You see?

Holly: Aw.

Stefan: Right--yeah, hon, aw. Her name--her name was charlotte. I loved her very much. I still do. I still do. And even though I don't get to see her anymore, she's still right here, holly. She's still right here in my heart. She always will be. One thing I've learned is that even though you can't be with someone, it doesn't mean they're gone. It's how you're with them that matters, because that's the magic. It's magic. Just like your mommy, your mommy, who's way, way, way off in heaven, she's still right here. She's right there in your little heart.

Holly: Boo.

Stefan: [Laughs] And that's--that's called love. That's called love, and that's a special kind of magic. It's--it's the most powerful magic in the whole universe. Here, can I show you something? Let me show you something? Listen, look, look, look... this means magic... this means love... in heaven. Magic, love, heaven. So, whenever you miss your mommy, and you don't--you don't--you don't really know what to say or how to say it, you just do that. You just go magic, love, heaven. Can you do that? You think so? Chloe: Yeah, I think she's getting sleepy. Okay. All right, it's time to go-- go night-night. Okay. Bye.

Stefan: Damn it.

Brady: And be careful, rex. Keep an eye on sarah when this guy's around.

Rex: [Chuckles] You know, brady... leave me out of this, all right? Eric and I, we're cool.

Brady: Yeah, I thought we were too.

Eric: Get out of my house now.

[Phone ringing, beeps] Hello?

Sarah: Hey, it's me.

Eric: Sarah, what's going on?

Sarah: I'm at the hospital. Your mom has had an incident.

Eric: My mom? What happened?

Sarah: She, um--she had some sort of allergic reaction. John found her passed out on the floor.

Eric: Is she all right?

Sarah: She's stable, but she's still in critical condition. She hasn't woken up yet.

Eric: All right, thanks for calling. I'll be right there. Bye.

Brady: What's wrong with marlena?

Eric: [Mumbles]

Brady: I'm going too.

Rex: I'll drive, guys.

[Tense music]

[Gentle music]

Leo: Well, that was very touching, but you didn't answer my question.

Diana: What question is that?

Leo: Forget it, I don't know why I thought I would get the truth from you.

Diana: I am telling you the truth.

Leo: I will find the answers I need, one way or another. John took my toothbrush to run a dna test, and he's on his way to the hospital now to meet marlena and get the results.

Diana: He's on his way there now?

Leo: Yes. So, if you've been lying to him, he's gonna know any minute... if he doesn't already.

[Tense music]

Kayla: Well, the swelling has receded, and her respiration is better.

John: So, she's gonna pull through this, right?

Kayla: Yeah. But we need to find out what caused this reaction in the first place, and make sure that she doesn't get anywhere close to the allergen.

John: I don't have any idea how she could've been exposed to penicillin.

Kayla: Well, I don't either, but I'm gonna go to her office and take a look around. Stay here if you want, okay? And feel free to use the call button if you need anything, all right?

John: Hey...thanks... for saving my girl again.

Kayla: You're the one that saved her.

[Slow somber music]

John: How did we get here again? How is it that you are in this bed again, sweetheart?

I thought after what you went through last time, I don't know how much you got left, but you gotta fight, okay? You gotta fight now, with everything you got, and you come back to me.

[Elevator dings]

Eric: Sarah, hey, how is she?

Sarah: She's responding to medication, but she's not out of the woods.

Brady: You--you think she's gonna be okay though, right?

Sarah: [Sighs] We hope so.

Eric: And this is all because of an allergic reaction?

Sarah: She was in anaphylaxis. We're lucky that john found her when he did. But I promise you that she is getting the best care possible.

Eric: I know she's in good hands. Thank you.

Sarah: Yeah.

[Elevator dings]

[Music intensifies] Little dakota's nose was quivering in fear.

[Solemn music]

Brady: Rex, I would watch out for this guy if I were you. He has a tendency to go after his brothers' women. I sure hope that doesn't happen to you.

Sarah: Hi.

Rex: Hi. Hi there.

Sarah: I didn't know you were coming.

Rex: Yeah.

Eric: Rex drove us.

Rex: Yeah, I was just-- I was parking the car.

Sarah: Oh.

Eric: So, um, can I go see my mom?

Sarah: Yes, she's in room 237. I'll be in there soon.

Eric: All right, thanks

Sarah: Mm-hmm. I'm glad to see you.

Rex: Um, yeah, yeah, me too. Uh, rough night?

Sarah: [Sighs] Yeah, you have no idea. You sure that you are ready to jump back into this crazy job?

Rex: Oh...oh, kayla must have told you.

Sarah: That you applied? Yeah.

Rex: [Chuckles] Uh, look, I'm--I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I just--I didn't wanna say anything, until I was sure it was happening.

Sarah: When did you decide to apply?

Rex: Right before I proposed to you. Of course, I didn't expect you to say no.

Sarah: Rex, I--

Rex: Look, if you're not comfortable with us working together, just say the word, really, and I will withdraw my application.

[Soft music]

Brady: Dad.

John: Hey, kid, eric.

Brady: How are you doing?

Eric: How is she doing?

John: Uh, well, she's, uh-- well, fighting, as usual.

Eric: How did this happen?

John: Uh, who knows. Kayla's trying to figure out what caused the reaction.

Brady: Sarah said that you literally brought her back. I mean, oh, my god, did you...

John: [Shushing] I'm gonna give you guys a few minutes with her, okay? Sweetheart, I'm gonna go take a look around your office. I'll be right back.

[Somber music]

It's good to see you together. Kayla said that there's a chance that marlena might be able to hear us, so I know it would do her a world of good to know that you guys are getting along...and acting like brothers again.

Chloe: Oh, hey.

Stefan: Is she asleep already?

Chloe: Yeah, miraculously, thanks to you. That really was magic. You were wonderful with her.

Stefan: Well, growing up in an orphanage, uh, I kinda got used to consoling the little ones who miss their parents.

Chloe: Oh, wow, I--I grew up in an orphanage too.

Stefan: Uh, really? I didn't--I didn't know that.

Chloe: Yeah, except I mainly kept to myself. I wish I would've had someone as nice as you around to help me feel better. [Chuckles] You know, I'm really sorry that you didn't get to be a dad to charlotte. I think you would've been a really great one.

Stefan: I'm not sure abigail would agree.

Chloe: Well, she's wrong.

Stefan: Well, nicole certainly knew what she was doing when she entrusted holly to you.

Chloe: Oh, sometimes, I don't know.

Stefan: What do you mean?

Chloe: Well, when parker was younger, it--it all just seemed easier, you know, little kids, little problems, but the older he's getting, it's just a lot more complicated.

Stefan: Yeah, I suppose it is. But you're doing a really great job with him, and--and I'm not just saying that.

Chloe: Thank you. But I just hate the idea of him losing his innocence. And I know it's gonna break my heart one day when he doesn't believe in the tooth fairy or santa clause anymore.

Stefan: [Chuckles] Yeah. For me, I--I--I don't know, I really don't like the idea of lying to kids about things like santa clause and whatever. I think--I think it undermines their trust, and I think they're intelligent, and they deserve to be treated with respect.

Chloe: Well, what about what you said to holly before, about nicole being in heaven, and love being the most powerful magic there is?

Stefan: I meant every word of that.

I'm mildly obsessed with numbers.

Sarah: I would never stand in the way of you working here. You are an excellent doctor...

Rex: [Chuckles]

Sarah: And we are understaffed.

[Both laugh]

Rex: So, you're cool with us working together?

Sarah: Of course. You should do it.

Rex: I'm really glad to hear you say that. And I think that working together will--will bring us closer. Come here.

[Solemn music]

Eric: Hey, mom, it's me, eric.

[Poignant music]

Brady's here too. We were together when we got the call.

Brady: Actually, we were in the middle of a pretty ugly fight.

Eric: Brady, what are you doing?

Brady: I want you to know, I know how much it means to you to have us getting along, but it's been pretty rocky, and I'm not saying it's gonna go away, but I want you to know that I'm gonna be doing my best.

Eric: Me too.

I'd do anything for you.

Stefan: So, uh...

[Light music] Back to where we were?

Chloe: Oh...yeah, I remember now. [Chuckles]

Uh, look, I--I'm sorry, I'm just...

Stefan: No.

Chloe: I'm really exhausted. It's been a long day.

Stefan: I--I know.

Chloe: But thank you for helping me with holly, and...

Stefan: Of course.

Chloe: So I can get some sleep.

Stefan: [Laughs] My pleasure.

Chloe: Good night, stefan.

Stefan: Good night, chloe.

Sonny: You know what's underrated? Anticipation.

[Gentle music]

Will: Well, there is something to be said for, uh, instant gratification as well.

Sonny: [Laughs]

I wonder where leo is right now.

Will: Are you serious?

Sonny: What?

Will: That's what you're thinking about?

Sonny: I'm sorry, it's--it's like a force of habit.

Kayla: I have no idea, but I'm gonna send them to the lab.

John: [Scoffs] What, are you thinking someone laced them with penicillin?

Kayla: I know, um, marlena wanted to wait for you to open it. She thought you should be the first to see it.
