Lani: You know, growing up in florida, I never saw myself becoming a chowder person.

Both: [Laugh]

Eli: You want some dessert?

Lani: No, I'm stuffed.

Eli: Then what do you say I get the check and then you and I can go back to my place.

Lani: And pick up where we left off last night?

Eli: You read my mind.

Lani: [Laughs]

Eli: Ah... the new D.A. At 11:00. Put your head down. Maybe he won't see us.

Ted: Aren't you two on duty?

Lani: Not anymore.

Ted: You still haven't found haley chen. I want her picked up tonight.

[Tense music]

Eve: Well, we should be able to talk here.

Jack: Is haley still in salem?

Eve: Yes.

Jack: Is my son hiding her?

Eve: No, your nephew is. His name is tripp.

Claire: [Laughs] I didn't know we had cookies.

Tripp: Yes, you did. They were in your secret hiding place.

Claire: [Laughs]

Tripp: Sorry, the only tea we had was green tea, and so I figured if you didn't like it, the cookies could just take the taste out--

Haley: I love green tea. Thank you.

Claire: I love it too. Where's my green tea?

Tripp: That was the last tea bag.

Claire: Oh, okay.

Haley: Here, you can take it. It's yours.

Claire: No, no, no, no, haley, you are our guest. Please.

Haley: I'm hiding from the police. There's no need to put out clean towels for me. Besides, you letting me stay here is so much. Thank you.

Claire: Look, any friend of my boyfriend's is a friend of mine.

Tripp: So, we should figure out what your next move is.

Claire: Yeah, I just-- I don't know how safe it is to stay here since, like I said, my grandmother is the police commissioner and she kind of just drops in here all the time. Um... you know what? Haley, what if you took a bus to detroit, then maybe you could get across to canada in windsor, right?

Haley: Yeah, I-- I actually checked that out already, and if I tried to cross the border there. I'd get picked up.

Tripp: Yeah, and the whole point is to keep haley here.

Claire: Right, right. Sorry.

Haley: I just wish there was a legal way to get a work visa.

Tripp: Well, maybe there is. Yeah, but we'll need your help.

Claire: Yeah, sure. Yes, whatever you need.

Diana: You will be much better off without her, my darling. You'll see. Okay.

[Keyboard clacking] I'm in. All right, let's have some fun. Dr. Marlena evans, medical history, medical history. Jackpot...

[Gasps softly] Severely allergic... to penicillin. Hm... john, what's wrong?

John: [Sniffs] It's marlena. She had a severe reaction to penicillin. Nobody knows how it happened. They think it's an accident, but she's gone. She's dead. My doc is dead, and I'm all alone.

Diana: Oh. Oh, it's all right. I'm here. That's all right.

John: [Sobs]

Diana: [Giggles] Death by penicillin...

[Chuckles] Couldn't happen to a nicer gal.

[Elevator dings]

Marlena: Shelly.

Shelly: Dr. Evans. Here's the test results you wanted.

Marlena: Thank you.

Please let these results show that diana's lying. John can't be the father of that creepy leo.

[Cell phone rings] Oh, hey, will. What's up? Oh, thank you. Thanks for letting me know. No, I'll call john right away and warn him. Thanks, bye.

[Line trilling]

[Cell phone rings]

John: Hey, doc.

Marlena: Honey, I just had a call from will. Sonny doesn't know where leo is, but will thinks he might have gone over to see diana and find out what she knows.

John: Well, he's gonna strike out, 'cause I'm pretty sure I got here first.

Marlena: Would you please get out of there?

John: I'm heading for the door.

Marlena: Oh, oh, john, I have the test results.

John: I'll meet you at your office. We will face this together, sweetheart. I love you.

Marlena: I love you.

Leo: Are you the new maid?

John: What do you think?

Leo: What the hell are you doing here?

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Claire: I...[Laughs] I just don't really understand how I could help haley, you know?

Tripp: Well, what she needs is a lawyer, so what about your mom?

Claire: Tripp, my mom's in hong kong.

Tripp: Yeah, so she probably knows chinese law better than anybody else here.

Claire: [Laughs] She's not an immigration lawyer.

Tripp: Yeah, but she probably knows the name of one.

Haley: You know what, guys? I don't want you to impose on your mother, claire. You guys are already doing enough for me.

Tripp: No, no, no. You're being screwed by the system here, so we wanna help you. Right?

Claire: Yes, absolutely.

Tripp: Okay, well, then, call your mom, okay? Right now?

Jack: Tripp?

Eve: Mm-hmm.

Jack: Why would my brother name his son tripp? That's like signing him up to get his ass kicked in fourth grade!

Eve: Jack, the only thing you need to know about tripp is that he's hiding haley at his place.

Jack: You're absolutely sure?

Eve: Yes, I am.

Jack: How'd you find out?

Eve: Does it matter?

Jack: Hell yeah, it matters. When I confronted melinda with haley, I nearly got jj in trouble with the cops. I don't wanna do that to my nephew, even if I don't know him from adam.

Eve: [Chuckles] Okay, well, tripp's girlfriend told me. Her name's claire and she heard about everything that you said at the press conference.

Jack: Tripp's own girlfriend ratted him out?

Eve: Apparently haley is making a move on tripp, and claire doesn't like it.

Jack: [Scoffs] Well, so much for haley's deep feelings for jj.

Eve: Well, you know what? She's gonna come on to any guy that's gonna help her out. And claire only told me because, you know, she's just worried that tripp is gonna get in some big trouble.

Jack: Well, he's gonna get in trouble if he's hiding haley from the police.

Eve: Yup. Well, now you could help your nephew and yourself at the same time, you know? I can see tomorrow's headlines. "Candidate jack deveraux directs police to fugitive haley chen." Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Hm?

Marlena: Oh, hi there.

Kayla: Ah, hi.

Marlena: Shelly just gave me the test results. Thank you for putting a rush on them.

Kayla: I hope they come out the way you hope for.

Marlena: Oh, I haven't looked at them yet. I think john should see them first, and he's on his way over here now.

Leo: You were searching the room, weren't you? It was bad enough when you cut me off and left me to make my own way. I swear, if you mess up my plans--

Diana: Don't you dare threaten me. I know you killed your father, and I have the proof.

Leo: Give me that envelope.

John: Calm down. Let me explain.

Leo: I don't need an explanation. You jimmied the room safe. Now, give me that envelope.

John: Can't do that.

Leo: Then I'm calling the cops.

[Sneaky music]

[Door clicks]

Shelly: Sorry I didn't knock. Dr. Evans is at the desk talking to dr. Johnson.

Diana: It's all right, shelly, I'm ready to leave.

Shelly: Did you get what you needed for the article? Did dr. Evans know that chen was an illegal?

Diana: Well, I didn't find anything to prove that, but the hospital has not made a statement to the press about ms. Chen, and maybe, just maybe, dr. Evans got them to cover for her.

Shelly: I see what you mean.

Diana: I'm just going to need to broaden my search. Shelly, you don't have any way, any--a master key that might get me into some of the other offices, do you?

Shelly: We're supposed to guard these with our lives. It gets us into the pharmacy.

Diana: Yes, mm. This story really needs to be told.

Shelly: It does. Here.

Diana: Thank you. And you keep an eye on dr. Evans for me. You let me know when she comes back.

Shelly: No problem. You can count on me. Honey, I knew that the minute I set eyes on you...

[Sighs]

Eli: We followed up with every known associate we have for haley chen.

Lani: And no one has seen her.

Eli: And we're off duty.

Ted: Oh. No, you're off duty when I say you're off duty.

Lani: If the federal government wants to issue a warrant for a nurse who hasn't hurt anyone, let them enforce it.

Ted: You know, this is serious.

Eli: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who knows what haley's up to right now. She can be taking care of a sick person or something.

Ted: You are obligated to cooperate with all agencies, but I do have the feeling that if you even see haley chen in the street, you would look away.

Eli: Whoa, whoa, hold up. We take our jobs seriously, so don't even go there, all right? We've questioned jj deveraux, melinda trask, and a lot of hospital personnel. No one knows anything. If we had a lead that would give us ms. Chen's location, we bring her in, but we don'T. The trail has gone cold.

Claire: Tripp, I can't call my mom right now. It's probably the middle of the night in hong kong.

Tripp: No, no, no, no, no. It's, uh-- no, it's tomorrow morning.

Claire: Really?

Tripp: Yeah.

Claire: Oh...[Laughs] Well, I was never meant to be a math major.

[Softly] All righty.

[Laughs softly] Voicemail, sorry. Hi, mom, it's me. Can you call me as soon as you get this? A friend of mine has a serious legal problem and I really wanna help her. All right, love you. Bye.

[Sighs] Kay. Hopefully, she will call back soon.

Haley: You guys-- you guys are being so, so great to me. And I don't know if your mom can do anything, but it really means the world to me, claire, that you asked her to try.

Claire: Mm-hmm...

[Chuckles]

Eve: You know, if we could get to haley and find her, that would be huge.

Jack: Huge?

Eve: Mm-hmm.

Jack: You sure? I mean, she's not exactly some bloodthirsty drug runner.

Eve: It doesn't matter, jack. I was out running errands this morning. Everybody was talking about it. They want her found, and you know what? You could be the one to do it. You could get there before the police do. It would be great, and then they couldn't say that you were being soft on immigration after that, now could they?

Jack: They couldn't, no. Well, we might get some good press out of it, maybe.

Eve: I know where tripp lives. Come on, let's go.

Jack: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Eve: Why?

Jack: Photos. If there's no photos, it's like it never happened.

Eve: Let's go.

Jack: All righty.

Leo: Hey!

John: You really think the cops are gonna pay serious attention to anything you say?

Leo: Why am I the bad guy? Sonny kiriakis knocked me unconscious. He and will took me for dead. They rolled me up in a rug and dumped in the trunk of a car.

John: Now, let me ask you something. If you're such the innocent victim here, why is it your mother had something locked away in that safe that you don't want anybody to see?

Leo: Well, that's between me and her.

John: And it's gonna be between you and the cops if I had this over to them, and that's exactly what's gonna happen if you call them.

Leo: You stole that envelope. I've seen enough lawyer shows to know that can't be used against me.

John: No, I don't think your mother's gonna like it too much if you call the police on me.

Leo: My mother's likes and dislikes mean nothing to me. Excuse me.

John: How about this one? Are you sure you really want to make that call and turn in your own father?

[Tense music]

[Phone clicks]

Leo: You're bluffing. My old man is dead.

John: The man you considered your father is, yeah. But the question is, was richard cooper really your biological father?

Leo: What are you talking about?

John: Your mother and I-- you know we were in a relationship...

Leo: Yeah, yeah, I know that.

John: And the timing of your birth made it possible that she was pregnant when we broke up.

Leo: Why would she lie to me all these years?

John: Our breakup wasn't pretty, to say the least. She felt guilty over a lot of things she had done to me. That's why she left salem so suddenly. By the time she discovered she was pregnant, she was already involved with cooper, and she told him, "this child might not be yours," but he gave that baby his name anyway.

Leo: Did she ever try and find out for sure?

John: She never thought she'd see me again, so no. But when I finally started putting all the pieces together, I confronted her, and she said, yeah, there's a possibility that I am your father.

Leo: And you believe her?

John: Well, I thought it might be wise if I had a dna test done.

Leo: How? You would have to have my-- oh, my god. You stole it.

[Scoffs] Son of a bitch.

John: I didn't want to say anything until I had some proof.

Leo: [Scoffs] I don't believe this. All this time, she let me believe that I...

John: All this time, she let you believe what?

[Dramatic music]

Marlena: Well, john must be pretty conflicted about the possibility of being leo's father.

Marlena: He certainly is. Don't forget that leo was the person responsible for sonny and will being arrested for attempted murder.

Kayla: Well, what if the test results don't go his way?

Marlena: Mm. You know john. He will rise to the occasion with dignity. He might even try to be a father to leo. I hope that doesn't happen.

Kayla: What do you mean by that?

Marlena: Oh, oh, I've had a couple of visits with diana. She clearly has her own agenda there.

Kayla: What kind of agenda?

Marlena: I don't know, but I know that this is not the same person john fell in love with.

Diana: Perfect. Penicillin, here we go. Thank you, shelly, and your magic card.

Haley: I promise, you guys, I won't stay here any longer than I have to.

Tripp: No, no, haley, don't worry about it, okay? I can't believe your own sister won't even help you out.

Claire: Yeah, I just don't get it. How can people not want someone like you in our country?

Tripp: You know, kayla told me what a great nurse you are.

Haley: Yeah...[Laughs] She's been so nice to me since all this happened.

Tripp: Why shouldn't she be? I mean, you're not hurting anybody. You're helping people. I mean, immigrants are what made this country into a great country to begin with.

Haley: I wish more people felt like that.

[Knocking]

Tripp: Are you expecting anybody?

Claire: No, I'm not.

Tripp: Either my--okay, okay. Go hide in my room. I'm sorry it's such a mess right now. Go, go.

[Tense music]

[Door clicks]

Jack: You're tripp, steve johnson's son?

Tripp: Yeah, that's me.

Jack: I'm your uncle jack.

Tripp: [Laughs softly] You're kidding me.

Jack: Back from the dead. No kidding. Can I come in? I come at a bad time?

Claire: No, no, not at all. There's no problem. Come on in. Hi, I'm claire, by the way,

Jack: Claire. Claire, it's-- it's nice to meet you both.

[Soft dramatic music]

Leo: All my life, my mother let me believe that I was the son of an abusive man who called me a pansy. She never stood up to him. She never took my side.

John: I know. She told me all about it, and I'm sincerely sorry you had to go through it.

Leo: It's fine. It made me tough.

John: Mm. And there's another upside. This dna test-- there's the possibility that you will find out that you didn't come from the richard cooper gene pool.

Leo: Right now, I need to find my mother and find out why she lied about something so significant. Look, give me the envelope. I won't call the police. We can pretend we never saw each other.

John: Leo, I know you want me to believe you're doing me a real big favor here, but let me tell you how this plays out. The salem pd and I, we go way back. They will never take your word over mine. That's just a fact. And if they were to see what's inside this envelope, I'm pretty sure it's gonna mess up your life for good.

[Foreboding music]

Kayla: You know, I don't care what diana's agenda is. She is not coming between you and john.

Marlena: I don't even know that she wants to, but whatever happens, if it turns out that leo is john's son, I'm sure he'll try to find a way to fit leo into our family.

Kayla: Well, it can be done. Steve and I did it with tripp.

Marlena: Yeah. How's steve?

[Soft dramatic music]

Kayla: He's halfway around the world trying to repair the damage that stefan dimera caused his reputation...

[Sighs]

Marlena: Is he still upset that you spoke to stefan privately? Doesn't he understand that you were just trying to help him?

Kayla: Well, he says he understands, but he's mad. I know he is. And I believe that's the reason he's staying away.

Marlena: Oh, I'm so sorry.

Kayla: Yeah, me too. You know, it's really hard on the boys too. I mean, joey's so looked forward to his visits and he and tripp were just getting so close. And he's not here. And it's because of what I did.

Jack: It's a nice place you got here.

Tripp: Thank you.

Jack: Yeah, I'm sorry that I didn't come see you sooner. I first got to town. I found out I had another nephew. I'm sorry it took so long.

Tripp: It's okay. Sounds like you've been through a lot.

Jack: It's been hard, yes, it has, but it's over now. Thank god.

Tripp: Yeah, my dad said you guys didn't even know you were brothers until you were grown.

Jack: Yes. That seems to run in the family.

Tripp: Yeah, nah, my dad's not like your dad was. No, he's been an amazing father from the minute he found out about me.

[Mutters] I really miss him.

Jack: I understand that steve and I didn't get along a lot at first. I hope he comes back soon so that we can work at being closer.

Claire: What's it like to come back to this place and not remember anything about it?

Jack: It's strange. Thank you for asking. That's why I'm reaching out to extended family. I could really use the support of family right now.

Tripp: Oh yeah?

Jack: Mm-hmm.

Tripp: Yeah, how are-- how are you and jj getting along these days?

Jack: Not very well.

Tripp: I could see why. I mean, he told you about haley, and asked you to keep it to yourself but you went public with it anyway.

Jack: What happened between jj and me was a misunderstanding.

Tripp: That's not the way I heard it.

Jack: And how did you hear it?

Tripp: I heard that you used haley's situation to make political points for yourself, which, in my book, makes you a complete tool.

Lani: Do we have to wait here until he gets a hold of hope?

Eli: I don't see why.

Lani: If we can get out of here before he finds her, we'll be off the hook.

Eli: Yeah, grab your stuff. Let's make a run for it.

[Door creaks]

Eve: Oh, so glad I ran into the two of you. I have information on haley chen.

Ted: Did you say something about haley chen?

Eve: Yes, I know where she's hiding.

Ted: Really?

Eve: Mm-hmm.

Ted: Get the location and follow up. If you see her, please make the arrest.

Eli: Didn't I just say that we're off duty?

Ted: Yes, but I just talked to hope brady-hernandez, and she says differently.

Lani: Don't you two have better things to do than harass that poor girl?

Eve: That poor girl is in this country illegally.

Eli: It's called "improper entry," and the law says entering this country improperly for the first time is a misdemeanor punishable by fine and/or up to six months imprisonment. Y'all acting like she's public enemy number one.

Ted: Don't tell me what's in the law.

Eve: Why don't you just do your jobs?

Ted: I agree.

Eli: So, where is she? In an era of online retail,

Leo: I don't have a clue what my mother thinks she has over me. I haven't done anything wrong.

John: Mm. Well then, what do you say we just open this and take a look?

Leo: She's been threatening me with that since I came out. Hard to imagine a mother doing that to her own son, right? But apparently, this is the woman who lied to me about who my father is, so I shouldn't be surprised.

John: Leo, I don't wanna hurt you, especially if you're family, but you gotta understand will is family also, and the only reason I broke into that safe is because we suspected that your mother had something on you that we could use as leverage.

Leo: To drop the charges against will and sonny.

John: Exactly.

Leo: [Sighs] Why am I not surprised?

John: And since possession is 9/10 of the law, kinda looks like I have the upper hand here. But I'll tell you what. I'm gonna make you a deal. You drop the charges against will and sonny. I drop this in the trash. No one ever has to know what is inside of here. Your call.

[Soft dramatic music]

Leo: Okay. You win. I'll drop the charges.

John: I'll hand this over when you make it official with the D.A.

Leo: Call them.

[Keypad beeps]

Marlena: [Chuckles softly] "Thank you for everything you tried to do for me. Sincerely, haley chen"

Jack: I was trying to keep jj from getting in trouble with the law because of this girl.

Tripp: Nah, I don't believe that. A lot of people don'T. No, no, no, this is about you wanting to run for mayor, hm? I mean, haley's sister had to drop out because of you, and right after that, you announced that you're running against mayor carver.

Jack: I'm running because I sincerely believe I can do good things for salem.

[Phone beeps]

Tripp: Who is that?

Claire: It's my grandma marlena. She wants to have lunch with me tomorrow.

Jack: Tripp, I understand that you are friendly with haley. I just hope that she's not using you the same way she did my son.

Tripp: No, no. Look, I don't need you or anybody else worried about me. I want you to leave now, kay?

Eli: Tripp dalton?

Tripp: [Sighs] Yes, what would you like?

Lani: May we come in?

Tripp: Please. What choice do I have? Oh, are you kidding me? What is this? Come on.

Jack: I have reason to believe that haley chen is hiding out here. I'd start upstairs if I were you.

Tripp: No, no, no, no, no. Hey, no, I'm not gonna let you just search my place just because somebody said, all right? You can't just bust in here.

Eli: We didn'T. We have a warrant.

[Dramatic music]

Tripp: You rotten son of a bitch.

Jack: Tripp, tripp, tripp, calm down. Calm yourself down, son.

Tripp: No, I'm not your son, all right, and thank god, after seeing the way you treat your son! Put down that phone!

Eve: Forget about it.

Tripp: I can't believe you just came in here talking all friendly just so you could set the trap.

Jack: Harboring a fugitive is against the law.

Claire: Hey, you know, we were just helping out a poor girl who has done nothing wrong.

Jack: She crossed the border illegally.

Claire: You've got some real nerve talking your way in here so that you can set up a photo op.

[Footsteps clacking]

Haley: I snuck in here, okay? Tripp and claire are not to blame!

Tripp: No, no, you don't have to say anything else, okay, haley?

Eli: Put your hands behind your back.

Tripp: Come on. Is that really necessary?

Lani: Unfortunately, yes. Haley chen, you have the right to remain silent...

Eve: Get behind her so you're in shot.

Jack: Right.

Eve: Great, all right. Start your...start...

Jack: [Clears throat] The appeal I made earlier today regarding the whereabouts of haley chen did not fall on deaf ears. Someone came forward who's as concerned about this city as I am. Police have been called, she has been apprehended, and will now face the consequences...

Tripp: No, no, no, you want to say that crap, you say it anywhere other than my apartment! Get the hell out of here!

Jack: ...Country of ours! God bless america!

[Tense music]

Ted: Are you saying that you want me to drop all the charges against will horton and sonny kiriakis?

Leo: Yeah. I thought about it, and I don't think will and sonny ever meant to hurt me.

Ted: But are you sure you're not being pressured to say what you just did?

Leo: [Stammers] No, I'm not being pressured. I just realized now that family is important, and sonny is my husband.

Ted: All right, which means...

[Chuckles softly] You cannot be forced to testify against a spouse, right? I'm assuming you knew that. And without your testimony, there is no case. I will arrange to drop all the charges as soon as possible.

John: Thanks, ted.

Leo: Hey, I did my part. Now please give me that envelope.

John: I hope whatever's in here doesn't come back to bite you, but if I does and you need some help, you give me a call.

Leo: Shouldn't you wait to find out if I'm your son before you make an offer like that?

John: If you are my son, I will always be there to support you. You know, my wife just called, and she said the dna reports are in. I'm gonna shoot over to her office and we're gonna open it up together. Would you like to be there?

Leo: I have someplace else I need to go.

John: I see. So, you're not interested in knowing for sure who your father is?

Leo: No, I am very, very interested, but I need to find out why my mother lied to me all these years.

Diana: Still ticking, but hopefully not for long.

(Announcer) do you push through migraine?

Eve: It's okay, jack. I got it all, and you were great!

Eli: Let's go, ms. Chen.

Tripp: No, no, look, okay, hey, if claire's mom can't help you, we'll find you a lawyer who can, okay?

Haley: It's too late now, tripp--I'm in custody, and they're gonna deport me back to china as soon as possible. I am so sorry for all the trouble I caused you guys after you were being so nice to me.

Eli: All right, look, if you go with us quietly now, there won't be any consequences for tripp and claire.

Haley: Thank god for that.

Eli: Let's go.

Tripp: Give me that phone!

Eve: No way! You heard the cops. You're not in trouble now, but if I were you, I wouldn't screw up with that. Come on, jack, let's go. Come on.

Jack: I'm sorry, tripp. I know that you--

Tripp: No, what part of, "go and get the hell out," don't you understand? Go!

Jack: The law is the law, tripp.

Tripp: Git!

Jack: The law is the law!

Tripp: How the hell did they find out haley was here?

Claire: Tripp, I don't know. I don't know, okay? I don't have a clue. Come here, come here.

Tripp: If I ever find out who did this, they're going to regret it.

[Door beeps]

[Soft dramatic music]

Diana: It's gone.

[Keypad beeping]

[Safe clicks] Oh, god. Oh, god, it's gone. It's gone.

Leo: Looking for something, mummy?

[Knocking]

John: Hey-- good lord, what's happened, doc? Hey, hey, hey, honey. Sweetheart? Doc? Doc? Doc, come on.
