Haley: The--the police are after me? Are--are they gonna arrest me?

Jj: Eli grant and lani price are acting on behalf of ice. They found out you're undocumented.

Haley: How do you know?

Jj: Because they came to my place. That's why I've been trying to reach you. They're probably on their way to the hospital, if they're not here already.

Eli: I assume you've heard about the situation with haley chen.

Kayla: What situation?

Lani: That she's living in this country illegally.

Kayla: Oh. Well, all I know is that she is a wonderful nurse and a good person.

Lani: Believe me, we don't like this either.

Kayla: Then why are you looking for her?

Eli: Because we were asked to bring her in by immigration and customs enforcement.

Lani: Have you seen her today?

Kayla: I'm sorry, detectives, I don't think I can help you with this. And I have patients waiting for me, so please, show yourselves out.

Eli: She knows something.

Lani: I think haley's here at the hospital.

Ciara: Will you please stop talking about hurting me, ben? I know you'd never ever do that.

Ben: Look, I wouldn't want to. Looking at your face right now, all I want to do is be good to you. I want to be with you. I just--I can't trust myself. Ciara, I'm no good for you. I think the best thing that we can do right now is just not see each other anymore.

Ciara: You're leaving me?

Ben: I'm sorry. It's just that it has to be this way.

Ciara: No, no! It really doesn'T. Oh, my god, you said you'd never hurt me. So why are you breaking my heart?

Claire: What are you doing with that lighter?

Tripp: I thought something was up when you slammed your jewelry box shut like that.

Claire: Oh, okay. So you went snooping through my stuff?

Tripp: No, I could tell you were hiding something. Which you told me was a birthday present for me, but my birthday isn't for a while.

Claire: I cannot believe you invaded my privacy like that.

Tripp: Yeah, I'm sorry I had to do that. But why do you have a lighter? And why were you so worried about me finding it?

[Suspenseful music]

Claire: All right. I have a confession to make.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Hope: Will and sonny thought they had killed leo and you used it against them. You blackmailed them.

Ted: I was in debt to some very bad people. I know it doesn't justify it, but, hope, my life was in jeopardy.

Hope: Ted. You of all people now want to prosecute them for the same crime that you were blackmailing them over?

Ted: No, I don'T.

Hope: You're the interim D.A.

Ted: Not for long. There's only one thing I can do to make this right. I need to step down.

Rafe: Hey.

Kate: Welcome back.

Rafe: Good to see you on your own two feet.

Kate: Thanks to you.

Rafe: Thank you.

Kate: Any news about jordan?

Rafe: Ah, jordan. Yes, jordan. I just actually came from seeing jordan at bayview. She's struggling.

Kate: Oh, she's struggling?

Rafe: Yeah. Well, as you can imagine, she spent many years of her life trying to get ben out of that place trying to heal him, and now turns out she's locked up there.

Kate: Well, good. And I hope she's locked up there for the rest of her life.

Haley: What is taking so long? Let's just use the stairs.

Jj: No, they're all the way down at the other end of the hall. It's not gonna be a good idea.

Haley: I have to get out of here somehow.

Jj: Hide. Hide, hide!

Eli: Jj.

Jj: Hey, what's up, guys?

Lani: Haley's here at the hospital, isn't she?

Jj: Well, I just got here.

Claire: I didn't want to tell you this because I was ashamed, and it makes me feel really awful about myself to even say it out loud.

Tripp: It's okay, you can tell me. I won't judge you.

Claire: It's been a really hard couple of months and I-- I made some bad choices.

Tripp: Okay.

Claire: I was feeling a lot of pressure, trying to make things right with you. I didn't plan this. It just sort of happened, and I--

Tripp: You what, claire?

Claire: [Exhales sharply] I took up smoking.

Tripp: What?

Claire: I know. I know it's a terrible habit. I don't know why I even started.

Tripp: But I've--I've never even seen you with cigarettes or even smelled smoke on you.

Claire: Yeah, that's because I quit.

Tripp: You quit.

Claire: Yes.

Tripp: When?

Claire: Like, a couple of weeks ago.

Tripp: Okay. Okay, so then why do you still have the lighter? And why were you so worried about me finding it?

Ben: You know I would never want to break your heart.

Ciara: I'm telling you that I want to be with you.

Ben: I'm telling you that I would literally do anything, ciara, to make sure that I don't hurt you the way I almost hurt jordan.

Ciara: You wouldn't do that to me.

Ben: I would've said the same thing about her. That's my sister, okay. I love her. She's taken care of me my entire life. She only came back to salem because she was worried about me. And I almost killed her.

Ciara: She was out of her mind, ben. She was trying to kill me. You were just protecting me, okay.

Ben: I could've just knocked the syringe out of her hand. I didn't do that. I took it from her, and I was going to use it on her.

Ciara: But you didn'T.

Ben: Because you and rafe stopped me. But I wanted to. That's the issue. I was so angry. If I have it in me to kill my own sister, who's to say that I wouldn't kill somebody else I love?

Ciara: You wouldn'T. Ben, I trust you.

Ben: That's a mistake. Because I don't trust myself. Not anymore. Ciara... you deserve better than me.

Ciara: I know, but I want you, ben. I want you and I know who you are.

Ben: You know I'm damaged goods? And I'm always going to be, right?

Ciara: We're all damaged goods, ben. But you saved my life. More than once.

Ben: I'm always gonna be grateful I was able to do that. How will I be able to save you if the next person trying to hurt you is me?

Ciara: Look. I know you're shaken up by what happened with jordan, but we can get through this.

Ben: I don't think you know what it's like to be in constant fear of hurting somebody that you love.

Ciara: Yes, I do. Yes, I do. You're not the only one that's lost control, you know. I've done some pretty bad things to--to my mom and to rafe...

Ben: Ciara, you--what are you talk--it's not the same thing.

Ciara: And to claire.

Ben: It's-- ciara, the last time I lost control, people died.

Ciara: Yeah, but you're not that person anymore.

Ben: How can you say that? How can you say that? How do you know that I'm not gonna hurt you again?

Ciara: Because I believe in you, ben. And I believe in us. I need you to believe, too.

Tripp: Why were you so freaked out about me finding this?

Claire: Because I was disgusted with myself for doing what I did, okay? Look, I know it was wrong. And like I said, I was-- I was just ashamed.

Tripp: You were ashamed that you picked up smoking and then quit?

Claire: I don't know how to explain it to you. It's like--it's like it wasn't even me.

Tripp: So you keep the lighter around for?

Claire: Just to remind myself of what I did. Sometimes I will-- I'll take the lighter out and I'll look at it. And it just helps me remember to never let myself go back to that dark place ever again.

Tripp: Okay. I'm not really sure I'd call it a dark place. Are--are you sure there's not more to this than just a short-term smoking habit?

Claire: What else would it be? Look, point-- point is, I am putting this behind me, okay. I am done doubting us. You and me are back on track. And I'm really sorry that I hid this from you.

Tripp: It's okay. As--as long as there's no secrets between us.

Claire: No. No secrets. I really do need to get to work, though.

Tripp: Well, here, I'll give you a ride.

Claire: Thanks.

Tripp: You know, I got--i gotta say, I wasn't sure what I was expecting you to say about the lighter, but smoking wasn't it. I guess I just gotta take you at your word.

Claire: It's over, really. I promise you there is nothing to worry about.

Jj: I told you, I don't know where haley is, and I just got here.

Eli: What are you doing at the hospital?

Jj: Follow-ups on some patients I brought in. What do you want from me?

Lani: The truth that would be nice, jj.

Jj: You already questioned me at my place. I told you haley moved out.

Lani: So did you just come here to warn her that we're looking for her?

Jj: You guys know this is wrong, right? She's just trying to live her life. You know, ask anybody at this hospital. Haley is a great person.

Eli: I'm sure she is, okay, but we were assigned to this case and we have to follow through whether we like it or not.

Lani: You have to advise haley to turn herself in.

Jj: I told you, I just got here.

Lani: Well, when you do see her, tell her that if she keeps hiding from us, she is only making this worse on herself.

Lani: Look, I know you're someone who can't resist helping someone in need. But you are not doing haley any favors.

Jj: If I happen to see her, I'll pass along your message.

Lani: Jj, you have to know that she can't hide forever. And the longer that she is out there, the greater chance it is for someone to get hurt.

[Elevator bell dings]

Jj: Haley?

Kate: So if you're here to ask me to go to the judge and ask him to be lenient with jordan, you are coming to the wrong place, my friend.

Rafe: [Chuckles] I actually came to check on you.

Kate: I'm good.

Rafe: Okay.

Kate: How did hope feel about you helping me out while she was busy with ciara and jordan and ben?

Rafe: Oh, she totally understands.

Kate: I know she's the police commissioner, but she's also your wife, rafe.

Rafe: Yeah, fair enough. Well, if she happens to be upset, it's not with you.

Kate: No? Not even a little bit?

Rafe: Okay, maybe me coming here was just a little salt in a preexisting wound.

Kate: The wound being you running off to be with sami.

Rafe: I did not run off to be with sami. I went to take care of johnny.

Kate: Uh-huh.

Rafe: It's the truth.

Kate: It's sami. Okay, and now you're taking care of jordan.

Rafe: I am not taking care of jordan, okay? Would you-- I'm doing my job, okay?

Kate: All right?

Rafe: That's it.

Kate: I understand. All I'm saying is that if I were your wife I might have a problem with you running around and rescuing your exes. That's all I'm saying.

Rafe: Okay. Well, lucky for her, she wasn't alone the whole time I was gone.

Kate: Really?

Rafe: Yeah.

Kate: Who--who was with her?

Rafe: Evidently, ted laurent.

Kate: [Laughs] Ted?

Rafe: Yeah, ted, okay? Who I can't stand, nor do i trust with my wife.

Kate: Well, you shouldn'T. Believe me, because that jerk could ruin your life.

Hope: You'll resign as D.A.?

Ted: It's the right decision, hope. I put you in a terrible position. Especially since you're the one who recommended me to abe.

Hope: Then recuse yourself right now. Assign the case to one of the adas.

Ted: Do you want to run this by abe?

Hope: He's busy with the campaign. And I'm sure he'll appreciate knowing you're recusing yourself.

Ted: Okay. Then that's what I will do. Thank you, hope. It means a lot to me to have your support.

Hope: I need to go. I'm picking ciara up from the hospital.

Ted: Oh, she's coming home today?

Hope: Yeah, finally.

Ted: That's wonderful news. I'm very happy for you.

Hope: Thank you again for your support.

Ted: You're very welcome.

Ciara: Your sister is the one who set the fire. You didn't do anything wrong.

Ben: She only got to that place because of how we were raised, because of the things I did. She's damaged, just like me.

Ciara: No, stop saying that. You're a good person.

Ben: Do you understand? Do you understand that I'm just--I'm making your life more complicated. These things are all happening, like you weren't even speaking to your own mother because of me.

Ciara: That--that wasn't even your fault.

Ben: But I'm telling you, this is--it is my fault. I'm making it more complicated.

Ciara: No, you're making it better. You're making my life so much better. You saved me after the motorcycle accident, and you took care of me, and--and-- ben, you taught me that I can trust again.

Ben: You are the one that taught me how to trust again. But you couldn't save me, okay? No one's gonna save me.

Ciara: You can save yourself, ben, and I can save you. I can help you. I want to help you. I want to help you so much.

Ben: It's too risky. It's too risky for both of us.

Ciara: Every relationship has its risks. But the good ones are worth it. We care about each other. We've made it this far with everything in the world against us, and I really think we can be happy now, ben. I know we can.

Ben: I don't know if I'm capable of that. I'm gonna be in a constant fear of losing my grip. It's gonna eat me up and it's gonna drive a wedge between us.

Ciara: No, it doesn't have to, not if you don't let it.

Ben: Yes, it is. I'm sorry.

Ciara: No, ben! Ben!

Ben: I'm sorry, okay! I've never cared about anyone the way I care about you. Do you understand that? That's why I can't put you in danger ever again. You are better off without me.

Ciara: Ben. Wait, ben. Ben, please, no! Wait.

[Knock on door]

Kayla: Come in!

Jj: Can I talk to you for a minute?

Kayla: Oh, hi. Yeah, of course. What's going on?

Jj: Eli and lani came to my apartment looking for haley. And when they didn't find her there, they came here.

Kayla: I know. I saw them. Is she here?

Jj: Well, she was, but--but we saw them coming and she hid. But now I can't find her and I'm worried.

Kayla: You're worried she's gonna hurt herself. Look, I know that the reason that she overdosed before was because of her despair over this immigration status.

Jj: Well, she--she swore that she wouldn't attempt anything like that ever again.

Kayla: But that debate just made everything worse.

Jj: She tells me she's been seeing marlena, making a lot of progress, but none of that will matter if they arrest her and throw her in a cell.

Kayla: I know you care about her, don't you?

Jj: This is all my fault, kayla. I never should have told my dad about her status.

Kayla: No. You trusted your dad. You had--you had no way of knowing that he was gonna tell the whole world on live television.

Jj: I was--I was desperate to bond with him. I, um-- I've ruined haley's life. Now, she's out there on her own, nowhere to go, no one to help her.

Haley: Oh, sorry.

Tripp: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Haley: I have to keep moving.

Tripp: No, no, no, I heard what happened at the debate, okay, I'm sorry. This must've been what you were afraid of.

Haley: The cops are after me. If they find me, they're gonna deport me. I'm not gonna let that happen.

Tripp: Are you sure they're coming for you now?

Haley: I barely got away from eli and lani at the hospital, like a damn fugitive running for my life.

Tripp: That must've been terrifying.

Haley: I know they're jj's friends, but they're working on behalf of ice. And they're not gonna stop until I turn myself in.

Tripp: What would happen if you did?

Haley: What'll happen, they'll send me back to china, tripp, where I don't know anyone. I don't have my nursing license there. I don't--I can't support myself there.

Tripp: Could you try to come back here legally maybe? I mean, you have a lot of people here that would vouch for you.

Haley: The waiting list for-- for visas was like ten years long when I left. That's why I came here illegally. If anything, it's gotten worse by now. I might never get back.

Tripp: I'm so sorry.

Haley: Look, I've looked over my shoulder for so long and salem's become like home and I can't stay. But I can't live the rest of my life on the run either. And I don't know what to do.

Tripp: I have an idea.

Claire: Ben, hi.

Ben: Hi, can I just get a chicken sandwich and a salad to go, please?

Claire: Sure, yeah. Is it for ciara? I know the hospital food sucks.

Ben: No. Ciara and I are over.

[Knock on door]

Hope: Who's ready to go home? Hey, hi. Ciara, what's--what's wrong, baby? Honey?

Ciara: Ben just broke up with me.

Hope: Oh, ciara, I'm--

Ciara: Don't touch me! Okay, you finally got what you wanted, and don't even pretend like you're not happy about it!

Rafe: I know you had a bad business relationship with ted, but why shouldn't I trust him?

Kate: We had more than just a business relationship.

Rafe: What?

Kate: I said we had more than just a business relationship.

Rafe: Oh.

[Scoffs] I don't get it.

Kate: Okay, seriously? Seriously, you don't get it? What?

Rafe: No, I get that, okay? I get it. What I don't get is what you saw in him.

Kate: What, besides the fact that he's charming, handsome?

Rafe: Okay, okay, I get it. I get it.

Kate: You know, actually there--there--truthfully, there was more to it. Andre had just died. I wasn't dealing with it well. I was in a very vulnerable place, and I shared some-- some private things with him and he seemed so understanding. And he opened up about the loss of his wife, and, you know, I really felt like there was a connection.

Rafe: But there wasn't?

Kate: No, of course not. He was playing me the entire time.

Rafe: Oh, great. So now he's playing my wife. -Ah, the old crew!

Rafe: Well, I am sorry for what ted did to you. I'm sure you didn't deserve it.

Kate: Well, thank you, but you don't have to be sorry because I took care of it.

Rafe: Do I even want to know?

Kate: Is it going to be off the record?

Rafe: Was it illegal?

Kate: Is it off the record?

Rafe: Okay, fine, it's off the record.

Kate: I held him at gunpoint, then I had him grabbed and dumped on a deserted island.

Rafe: That was you?

Kate: Uh-huh. And I will deny it to my grave.

Rafe: Well, I'm afraid now I'm gonna have to take you in.

Kate: What? No!

Rafe: I'm kidding, okay? I am kidding. And from what I can see, ted had it coming after what he did to you and to will and to sonny.

Kate: Yeah, it's true.

Rafe: Yeah.

Kate: It's too bad he got off that island, though, because now he's back here. He's in salem and he's working his sleazy charm on everyone.

Rafe: I can't believe that sleazy charm works, by the way.

Kate: I said that I was in a vulnerable place, and from what you've told me about hope, she's in a vulnerable place too, right now.

Rafe: Great.

Ciara: For months, all you've done is make ben feel like a criminal, a murderer, an insane person. You--you never even once gave him a chance. You never ever let him or me forget about the terrible things he's done, even if all he was trying to do is be a better man and build his life.

Hope: But I was trying to protect you.

Ciara: But I didn't need protecting! And you're wrong. I didn't need protecting. Ben didn't start the fire. He didn't hurt me.

Hope: Sweetheart--

Ciara: He saved me. He made my life full again. Now he's gone and there's nothing I can do about it.

Hope: Here, baby.

Ciara: [Sniffles]

Hope: Why did he break up with you?

Ciara: Because he--he says that he doesn't trust himself. He's afraid that he's gonna hurt me. And it's all your fault. You finally drove him away.

Hope: Honey. Here, baby. As hard as it may be to believe, I really am sorry. I should've given you the benefit of the doubt.

Ciara: It's too late, mom. It's too late. I've already lost him.

Hope: Oh, honey.

Ciara: I lost him.

[Cries]

Haley: Are you sure you want to bring me here?

Tripp: Yes, yes, I'm sure. You can hide out here as long as you want.

Haley: You're harboring a criminal, tripp. I don't--I don't want to get you in trouble.

Tripp: You're not a criminal.

Haley: Yeah? Tell that to ice. Why are you being so nice to me?

Tripp: I was on my own for a while and I know what it's like.

Haley: Hmm. Did someone help you?

Tripp: Yeah, my dad and kayla tried to help me over and over again. Even when I did my best to try to push them away.

Haley: So this is a "pay it forward" situation?

Tripp: I just know I like you and I want you to be safe.

Haley: Hmm. Is it just me or does this place have a lot of feminine flavor?

Tripp: Yeah, I have two roommates, one of whom is my girlfriend.

Haley: Oh, I didn't know you two lived together. How is she gonna feel about me staying here?

Claire: Ben, I'm sorry. I don't understand. You and ciara broke up? You just saved her life. I was pretty sure you would get back together.

Ben: Yeah, I don't really want to talk about it.

Claire: What happened?

Ben: It's just been a really horrible few days. I had to save ciara from my own sister.

Claire: I know, and thank god you did.

Ben: Yeah, well, by stopping jordan, I realized... that there's this darkness inside of me. And I doubt that I'm ever gonna get past it.

Claire: You would never hurt ciara, right?

Ben: I wouldn't want to ever. But what if I lose control again? You know, what if the darkness comes back?

Claire: You are not going to let it. As long as you take your meds, you'll be fine.

Ben: My god, I forgot all about these.

Claire: What?

Ben: Yeah, no, just with everything going on this morning, I... forgot to take my meds.

Claire: Okay. Let me go get you some water. Are you good? Are you gonna be okay?

Ben: I'll be fine. It would take me missing a few days in a row for there to be any real effects.

Claire: Okay, then why are you so scared?

Ben: Because these little pills are the only things that are keeping me together. Last time I ran out of these at the cabin, I started to hallucinate. I started to see things and hear things.

Claire: Really? Like what?

Ben: I thought that my father was there in the room with me, urging me to burn the whole cabin down. I knew he wasn't real, but i just couldn't stop seeing him. I couldn't stop hearing him. He tried to turn me against ciara, and for a little while there I thought that I might have done it. I thought that I started that fire.

Claire: Well, I know for a fact that you didn'T.

Ben: How the hell do you know that? So there you are with your depression

Lani: There aren't many places for haley to hide in salem, not after everyone saw what happened in the debate.

Eli: You think she's already left town?

Lani: I hope not. Living life on the run is no way to exist.

Eli: Well, maybe jj will convince her to turn herself in.

Lani: Well, I will be glad when this case is out of our hands. We have enough going on without doing dirty work for ice.

Eli: For real. You know, I heard that the new interim D.A. Laurent is recusing himself from prosecuting the case against sonny and will.

Lani: Why would he do that?

Eli: Some kind of "conflict" of interest.

Rafe: What are you guys saying about laurent?

Eli: Oh, just that somehow he's connected to the will and sonny case.

Rafe: Oh, yeah. What isn't he connected to, by the way? For the record, I was just with kate. She said that guy's not to be trusted.

Lani: I wish I could say that surprised me.

Rafe: How did we get someone so shady as D.A.? What the hell was abe thinking?

Ted: Do you have something to say about me, detective?

Rafe: Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do.

Ted: Why don't we have this conversation in private?

Ciara: After daddy died, and after chase, I had-- I had such a hard time letting people in. 'Cause I was so afraid that i was gonna get hurt again. But with ben, it's just the opposite. He's the one who's afraid that he's gonna be hurting me.

Hope: I give him a lot of credit for making such a big sacrifice.

Ciara: Yeah. But I didn't--I didn't ask him to do that. Oh, mom, god, I just wish he could see what I see. That he's a good person now, kind and caring. I just wish he could believe in himself the way I believe in him. But I don't think there's any changing his mind.

Claire: Ciara never really believed that you started the fire. I was actually there when she and tripp were talking about how it was probably jordan.

Ben: Pretty good bet.

Claire: Right, so have they, like, questioned her yet?

Ben: I don't know. They won't let me anywhere near her.

Claire: Okay, so as far as you know she hasn't confessed to setting the fire?

Ben: No, no. Rafe's been there to see her. I don't know, maybe he's got a confession out of her.

Claire: What if she denies it? I don't know, do you think people will believe her? 'Cause, no offense, but she is certifiably crazy.

Ben: I get it.

Claire: Right, so whether she, like, admits it or not, everyone kind of knows that it had to be her, right?

Ben: Look, I hate to admit that my own sister might have been stalking me and ciara even back then, but i honestly can't think of another explanation for how that fire started.

[Cell phone rings]

Haley: It's jj.

Tripp: Are you gonna answer it?

Haley: I mean, he did tell my secret but he did warn me about the cops so...

Tripp: Go ahead and pick it up. He might know something about the cops.

Haley: Hello.

Jj: Thank god you answered. Are you safe?

Haley: Yeah, I'm safe.

Jj: Good. Eli and lani left the hospital. Are you still here?

Haley: No.

Jj: Where are you? Haley? Please, haley, just tell me where you are. I don't want you to have to face this alone. Let me help you.

Rafe: You need to step down as acting D.A.

Ted: Let's not pretend the problem you have with me is professional. It's personal.

Rafe: Oh, if you mean I don't like you, then yes you'd be right.

Ted: It's a little bit more than that. You see, you're upset because I've been here for hope and you haven'T.

Rafe: My marriage with hope is solid.

Ted: Really? And how would you know? You've been out of the country with your ex-wife.

Rafe: I went to help my former stepson.

Ted: All I know is that you seem to worry about everyone else except your wife. And then you get upset because someone else is helping her?

Rafe: I'm her husband. You mean nothing to her.

Ted: Keep telling yourself that. 'Cause if you were the husband hope really needs, she wouldn't have to turn to anyone else. But you have let her down, over and over again.

Claire: Here you go.

Ben: Thank you.

Claire: Look, ben, I know you're trying to do the right thing about ciara. But I also know that you really do love her, and I think you need to stop being so afraid and go be with her.

Ben: Now are you saying that because you're worried if i don't, tripp's gonna get back with her?

Claire: I just want everyone to be happy.

Ben: Right. Especially you and tripp.

Claire: All right, yeah, ben. I messed up big-time, but tripp finally forgave me. And I'm not about to lose him to ciara or anybody else for that matter.

Haley: I have to go, jj.

Jj: Please, just-- I want to help you. Just tell me where you are.

Haley: Look, I'm grateful to you for warning me about the cops, but I can't get over what happened the last time I told you something in confidence.
