Claire: Hi.

Tripp: Hey.

Claire: What're you doing home?

Tripp: What're you hiding?

Claire: I'm not hiding anything.

Tripp: Yeah, come on, there's something in your hand.

[Dramatic music]

Ciara: Hey, mom. I thought you'd be here to pick me up by now. You're still at bayview? Why? Did jordan not get admitted or something? Okay. That's a relief. No. Don't even worry about it. Just take as much time as you need, just... just make sure she can't get out, okay? Yeah, no, the last time I spoke to ben was last night, and... mom, he wasn't in such great shape. I'm really worried about him. Okay. I love you too. Bye. I'll see you soon.

[Cell phone beeps]

[Knocking on door]

[Tender music]

Lani: Hey.

Eli: Hey. You know, my girlfriend does that same thing.

Lani: Very funny.

[Both laugh] I got a text saying that you needed me.

Eli: Yeah. I do.

Lani: Well, we both have dinner breaks coming up. Why don't we take it back at my place?

Eli: I would love that.

Lani: But?

Eli: But the reason I said I need you is because rafe called.

Lani: Ah.

Eli: Yeah, he wants us to take over one of his cases. He and hope got held up at bayview.

Lani: What case?

Eli: The feds want us to pick up haley chen.

[Knocking on door]

Kayla: Yes? Haley. Need something?

Haley: To apologize. I-I'm sure you already know, but I lied on my job application and in the interview.

Kayla: Come in.

[Somber music]

I, um, I heard what happened at the debate last night.

Haley: Yeah, I'm sure everybody in salem knows me by now.

Kayla: Melinda trask is your sister?

Haley: But she's here legally, I'm-- I'm the one who's not.

Kayla: You had to have a government-issued id to be hired here. It was fake?

Haley: What I did was so wrong, and... and dr. Johnson, before I go, I wanted to see if I could give you these patient notes. I was gonna give them at shift change report, but...

Kayla: Of course.

Haley: There's only two, ms.--Ms. Clark in 603, she only eats jell-o, and it has to be cherry. And the reason mr. Lerner's bp was up yesterday is because his-- his pills are so dry that they'll stick to his throat.

Kayla: Wow. I'll change his meds. You're a good nurse. That was a good catch.

Haley: Thank you. I mean, this is all I ever wanted.

Kayla: This situation... this is the real reason that you tried to take your life, right?

[Tender music]

It's all right. It's okay.

Jennifer: Hey. I would've come sooner, but I had to file my story on the debate.

Jj: No, come on. Come on in. And to think I-I thought the debate was going to be boring.

Jennifer: What your dad said about haley, is it true?

Jj: Yeah.

Jennifer: She told you?

Jj: She thought she could trust me.

Jennifer: And you told your dad.

Jj: Thought I could trust him. Haley and I, we were both wrong.

Jennifer: Why did you tell your dad?

Jj: Haley and I got into a big fight about her sister. I needed someone to talk to.

Jennifer: You could've come to me.

Jj: Yeah. Yep. I wish I would have. I can't believe he would blurt it out like that.

Jennifer: Did you tell him that melinda was haley's sister?

Jj: No.

Jennifer: Oh, gosh, I knew it. I knew it, which means eve supplied that information. She is in the middle of all of this, jj.

Jj: This is pretty unbelievable. He can't even remember how horrible she was to him, and you.

Jennifer: And to you.

Jj: It's like he's as bad as she is.

[Forlorn music]

You destroyed me. You let me think that I could trust you. That you were the father I remember.

[Sighs] The dad I-I-I loved... he never would've done this.

[Dramatic whooshing]

[Stirring music]

Jennifer: Can you tell me, what was that? What was that? What were you thinking? Do you have any idea what this could do to our son?

Eve: You were thinking about jj just now, right?

Jack: Hard not to.

Eve: He's gonna come around, jack. He will see that you were just trying to protect him from a girl that was using him.

Jack: I'm not as sanguine about that as you are.

Eve: You did what was best for jj.

Jack: Best for jj. Or best for you.

[Dramatic music swells]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Eve: Jack, I have told you over and over again, I was just looking out for jj just like you were.

Jack: When jj first told me about haley... it made me feel good. It--it made me feel... like a father.

Eve: And it made me feel good that you wanted to share your concerns about jj with me.

Jack: What bothers me is that you told me about haley and melinda being sisters, and the next thing you said was that using haley would be a great way to get melinda to drop out of the mayoral race.

Eve: Yeah, because I think that the people of salem need to know that trask's tough talk on immigration is just that--talk! And I'm really happy that the truth came out about that.

Jack: Just don't tell me that you did it for jj!

Eve: What I did was encourage you not to give up on being mayor. And jack, it was your choice to stand up last night and speak out at that debate. But I'm telling you right now, I am sincerely sorry if it put any kind of strain on your relationship with your son.

Jack: It's not just a strain, eve. It's over. My son hates me now.

Jj: I-I know eve is involved, mom. I know it. All she wants to do is hurt us, and now she's using dad to do it.

Jennifer: I really don't know if we can put this whole thing on her, jj.

Jj: Are you sticking up for her?

Jennifer: No. I am not doing that. But I know that you have idolized your father growing up, and... jj, he wasn't a perfect person. He did a lot of really bad things in his past.

Jj: That was before he met you. You changed him. He became a better man.

Jennifer: Right, but he doesn't remember that, jj. I'm not even sure he-- he wants to.

Jj: Look, I-- I can't believe that dad would throw haley under the bus all on his own.

Jennifer: No, and I don't want to believe that either. But sometimes we don't know what people are capable of.

Claire: What's in my hand... is a present for you.

Tripp: Okay, then, why don't you want me to see it?

Claire: Because it is not your birthday yet.

Tripp: Mm.

Claire: All right. Mystery solved.

Tripp: Are you okay?

Claire: Yes, I'm fine. Why would you say that?

Tripp: I don't know, you just seem kind of-- seem kind of weird.

Claire: Okay, well, I'm fine. Did you hear about your friend, the nurse?

Tripp: Haley? No, what about her?

Claire: Uh, well, it was all over my feed. Uh, you know melinda trask? The woman who's running for mayor?

Tripp: Yeah, used to be the da.

Claire: Right. Well, it came out at the debate last night that she actually has a little sister who's illegal.

Tripp: Haley? You're kidding me.

Claire: No. Look for yourself.

[Percussive music]

Ciara: I texted you and you didn't answer.

Ben: Yeah, I know. I'm sorry.

Ciara: Where have you been?

Ben: Just walking the streets. Wrestling with the fact that I tried to kill my own sister.

Ciara: Ben. She hit you in the head with that tray and then tried to jab a needle into my arm. You were trying to stop her from killing me.

Ben: I could've just grabbed her and pulled her away from you.

Ciara: No, but she was fighting you.

Ben: Rafe stopped me from killing her.

Ciara: No.

Ben: Yes.

Ciara: No. No.

Ben: Yes, it was like an animal instinct, ciara, okay? You know what that says about me? I'm still an animal. I'm still a killer.

[Cymbal shimmering] Little dakota's nose was quivering in fear.

Lani: Why do we have to bring this girl in? If the feds want her, let them pick her up.

Eli: Well, the agent that called rafe said that their resources are stretched thin.

Lani: Yeah, they've been busy, but it's not--

Eli: And they also have the power to direct local authorities to round people up for them.

Melinda: I understand you wanted to see me.

Eli: Yeah. Yesterday at the debate, you denied that haley chen was your sister. We have evidence that you were lying.

Melinda: It was a lame attempt to protect her. There's no crime in that.

Lani: Were you aware of the fact that she didn't have papers?

Melinda: Of course not.

[Scoffs] I left china years before she did. I eventually married an american. I am a naturalized citizen. When my sister arrived, I of course assumed that she did so legally. If you have issues with haley, I suggest you take it up with her.

[Stark music]

Kayla: Oh. Sorry.

Haley: Thank you, I... I knew how much melinda wanted to be mayor. Sh--she made it clear to me that it would ruin everything for her if anybody found out the truth about me. Last christmas eve, I was feeling so guilty about what I'd done to her life, and--and especially after what she'd done for me. She put me through school. She took me in. She gave me a home. She wasn't--she's not my mother. It's not her job to take care of me.

Kayla: Maybe not, but you are her flesh and blood, and I'm sure she's worried about you.

Haley: Yeah, no, you're--you're wrong. She says I brought this on myself when I told jj the truth, that he told his father, and now I'm on my own.

Kayla: I'm sure that jj thought that he could trust his dad.

Haley: But he lied to me, I-I asked him not to tell anybody. And... you know, I-I was really starting to think that he cared about me. But that just shows how wrong you can be.

Jennifer: Jj, I don't know what's wrong with your dad. I know that he suffered traumatic injuries from that accident, and that I know he became one of dr. Rolf's pet projects. So I don't know, when you're jolted back to life by some mad scientist, what can happen to your brain chemistry?

Jj: Didn't change will.

Jennifer: Well, all I know is that your dad is not acting like the man that we loved, but I believe that that man is inside him, I do.

Jj: Yesterday, uh... he told me he loved me.

Jennifer: He did?

Jj: And then he did what he did at the debate.

Jennifer: Okay, but wait, you--you told me that he said he was afraid haley was taking advantage of you, right?

Jj: Yeah, but... I'm not sure I can believe anything he says anymore.

Jennifer: Jj, your dad has made a lot of mistakes, but he was always a very loving father. And I know that he would never intentionally do something to hurt you.

[Melancholy music]

Jack: You're right about one thing. The decision to confront melinda about haley was mine and mine alone. I don't know why I did it publicly. If I'd done it in private, haley would've been protected, and I would have a relationship with jj and jennifer.

Eve: Jj will come around, jack. Just don't let jennifer's self-righteous baloney bring you down, because listen to me, you are a hero. You're a hero to all the people out in this town who know that melinda trask is a hypocrite.

Jack: I'm not afraid to tangle with people.

Eve: I know, jack, and it showed. You're not only strong, but you're smart. That's why you are gonna make a great mayor. You know this town's got some special problems.

Jack: Mm-hmm. Two crime family in a one horse town.

Eve: Absolutely. Abe's a nice guy, too nice for the job, and you know what kind of woman melinda trask is.

Jack: Me? Mayor?

Eve: Yes.

Jack: Well, I am the son of a senator, aren't I? And, who knows, maybe I was meant for bigger things, huh? Maybe this mayor's office is just a stepping stone. To the senate. Or maybe even the governor's mansion.

Eve: Mm. Have I ever told you I love the way you think?

Seresto, seresto, seresto.

Jj: What do you guys want?

Eli: We're here to talk to haley chen.

Jj: Since when did salem pd start doing ice's dirty work?

Lani: We caught the assignment. We didn't ask for it. Is she here?

Jj: No. And I have no idea where she is now.

Lani: Can we come in for a minute?

[Suspenseful music]

Hi.

Jennifer: Hi.

Lani: You're a sweet guy, jj. It's in your nature to want to help people. And that's why you let haley stay here.

Eli: But if you're hiding her from the authorities, you could only be making things worse for her.

Lani: And yourself.

Jennifer: Jj doesn't know where she is. He's telling the truth.

Jj: She moved out. She's furious at me over what my dad did.

Eli: All right, well, we may need you to come down to the station to give an official statement.

Jj: You're kidding.

Eli: If you happen to talk to her, please let her know the best thing she can do is turn herself in.

Jj: What, so you can help the feds deport her? The hell I will.

Kayla: Here you go. You know, jj is a good guy, with a big heart, or he wouldn't have stayed in touch with you after he saved your life.

Haley: I don't know what I would've done without him. Honestly, he--he listened to me, he gave me a place after my own sister threw me out. And that's why I told him about me. You know, I was--I was so sure that I could trust him, because he knew exactly what was at stake for me and for my sister, and he still told his dad?

Kayla: Maybe he just wanted some advice.

Haley: But he lied to me. He lied to my face. He never told me that he was gonna talk to his dad. And now I'm going back to a country where I don't-- I don't know anybody, I don't have any family or friends, where girl children have no value, and god knows what's gonna happen to me next.

Tripp: This says she's gonna be deported.

Claire: Wow. [Laughs] Well, I-I would hope you'd be this upset if I was gonna be deported.

Tripp: Uh, what is that supposed to mean?

Claire: Nothing, I'm just-- I don't know why you're so, so worried about her.

Tripp: Why wouldn't I be? She's a nice person, and crappy stuff is happening to her.

Claire: Come on, tripp. She'll be all right.

Tripp: Really? Okay, well, how would you feel if you made a home here with a job you like and friends and suddenly it was all just taken away and you had to leave it all behind?

Claire: Tripp, you have to admit it is kind of her own fault. You can't just break the law like that and get away with it.

Tripp: Well, that's hilarious coming from you.

Claire: Excuse me, why would you say that? Tripp, what are you talking about?

Ben: [Sighs]

Ciara: Look. I know what it did to you to see your sister like that. But she's like that because of clyde. He pushed you both to do the things that you did.

Ben: The night of that first fire at the cabin, I thought I saw him--

Ciara: You'd run out of your medication--

Ben: He was telling me to hurt you.

Ciara: But you didn'T. You didn't hurt me. You went into town and you refilled your prescription.

Ben: You don't know that for sure, ciara.

[Solemn music]

Jordan caused the accident that killed our mom. She just told rafe that she did it on purpose. She didn't remember that until last year. What if I set that fire at the cabin and I just don't remember either?

Ciara: You wouldn't do that to me.

Ben: I did it to jen and abigail.

Ciara: You're a different person now.

Ben: This is real. Do you understand me? This is real. I used to hear my dad's voice in my head. When I was a little kid, he would be screaming at me, looking at me: "What are you, a little girl? Be a man. Toughen up." I used to get so frustrated that I literally just wanted to hurt somebody. Do you understand that?

Ciara: I know, I know that, and you wanted to hurt him and that's okay. I get that, ben, because I want to hurt him too.

Ben: I'm scared. Jordan was my rock. Now she's insane. What if that sickness is still inside of me? What, am I just supposed to wait until it's set off again? I can't deal with that. I can't live like that. I just want-- I want to disappear.

Ciara: No.

Ben: Yes. Yes. I have to go someplace where I'm not gonna be able to hurt anybody else.

Ciara: Please stop talking about going away. Please. Being alone isn't good for you. You need--you need people to support you.

[Tender music]

Ben: Having you in my life these past few months...

[Sighs] Ciara, I never thought I could feel this good again. Jordan was the only other person I could ever count on in this entire world. Look what I almost did to her. What if I did something to you? What if nobody was there to stop me? Aren't you afraid of that?

Ciara: I was scared to death of you in the beginning, when I finally came to and found myself alone with you, and there were times when I wondered if my mother was right about you setting that fire, but do you know what always stopped me from being afraid of you? You did, ben. You. You told me that you didn't do it.

[Sighs] And I believe you. I believe you with all my heart.

Tripp: Will you calm down? I was talking about you rigging the "bella" magazine contest.

Claire: Well, this is not the same.

Tripp: You cheated. You broke the rules.

Claire: Look, tripp, I never said I was a perfect person. But I also never snuck into another country without papers.

Tripp: You know, I don't want to argue about this anymore, okay, I was just trying to make a point.

Claire: You know, if haley's so great and you two are so tight, then why didn't she tell you she was here illegally? Do you think that maybe she knew she was getting away with something that was wrong?

Tripp: No, I'm not gonna judge haley until I've heard the whole story.

Lani: I don't know if this helps, but I don't like doing this any more than you do.

Eli: You were on the job, jj. The law is the law, and we took a oath to uphold it, whether we agree with it or not.

Jj: Look, um... I'm mad, and I-I'm worried about haley. Look, I didn't mean to take it out on you guys, it's just... she's not as strong as she seems. If she gets deported, I'm afraid of what it might do to her.

Lani: We don't know for sure that she'll be deported. The best thing she could do right now, jj, is turn herself in.

Eli: Her sister is an experienced lawyer. Maybe she can find a way out of it.

Jj: Melinda's only out for herself. You guys know how she is. Haley's on her own now.

Kayla: You know, I'm not an immigration lawyer, but I think there's a case to be made for allowing you to stay in this country.

Haley: You're not just saying that?

Kayla: No, you are an excellent nurse. There must be some sort of visa you can get to continue to work here.

Haley: Yeah, I researched that, and--and back in the day, maybe you'd be right, but the way people feel about immigrants now, I don't think I'm gonna get a break.

Kayla: You know, um, I'm irish on both sides. My ancestors came to this country I'm sure just the way that you did. They had to put up with a lot of--of hardship and prejudice. But they didn't give up. You can't give up. Please. Don't quit this job. You have patients who need you.

Haley: You really think I should stay?

Kayla: Well, can you do it?

Haley: If you're behind me.

Kayla: Okay. I'll talk to the administration, see what we can do to have you stay here.

Haley: Thank you. Thank you so much, I... I am so sorry about what I said to you about jj, um...

Kayla: Yeah, well, I think jj feels as betrayed as you do. By his own father.

[Knocking on door]

Eve: Gosh, I should put a-- a "do not disturb" sign...

[Both moaning]

[Knocking on door] Oh, come on.

Jack: What? All right! All right. All right, all right.

Melinda: I hope you're pleased with yourself. You've tanked my campaign.

Jack: You knew your sister was here illegally. You tanked your own campaign.

Eve: You think that the law doesn't apply to you, right?

Melinda: There are so many things the two of you don't understand about why I kept haley's status private. But none of that matters. I just spoke with the head of the party. They're cutting me loose. Without their backing, there's no way I can beat mayor carver. I assume it's only a matter of time before you announce your candidacy. I never thought I'd be casting a vote for mayor carver, but talk about the lesser of two evils.

[Percussive music]

Eve: You know, jack, she is right about one thing. We have to meet the deadline on the filing. We have to draw up a petition and get as many signatures as possible.

Jack: Slow down, slow down, slow down--

Eve: No, no, no. Abe has the momentum after last night. We have to make a case to the people of salem that they deserve more than the same old, same old, and that is you, jack deveraux.

Jack: What are you doing?

Eve: I'm looking up the number... gonna call campaign headquarters. That is, unless you tell me otherwise. (Katy) I was thrilled to be able to go with my friends to our annual

Eve: Well, I'm so glad that you feel that way, bob. Yes. Yes, well, it was great talking to you too. Okay. Campaign headquarters has been inundated with phone calls saying that melinda trask is nothing but a liar and you were a brave man to confront her. And my new friend bob really wants to meet you, which means they want you to run!

Jack: You sure about that?

Eve: Yes! I mean, after you exposed melinda trask's big secret, you're in a position to make a strong stance on immigration, jack.

Jack: Is that what they expect?

Eve: You'll have to feel them out, in the meeting. Jack, if they do decide to back you, we are finding the best campaign manager possible.

[Giggles]

[Dramatic music]

Jack: I'm looking at her.

Eve: Are you serious?

Jack: I think we make one hell of a team.

[Cell phone ringing]

[Dramatic music]

[Cell phone beeps]

Jj: She's still not picking up.

[Voice mail beeps] Haley, um... I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the police were just at my place and they're looking for you. Look, please let me help you. Call me when you get this. Okay?

[Cell phone beeps] She still doesn't want to talk to me.

Jennifer: Text her, jj.

Jj: The wrong person might see it. I gotta find her.

Jennifer: Jj, no. Please, listen to eli and lani. You cannot get in the middle of this. You can'T.

Jj: If I hadn't shot my mouth off to dad, haley would be okay now. I'm already in the middle of it.

Jennifer: No, jj, please, you--please think about what you're doing!

[Dramatic music]

Ben: I don't think you know how much it means to me that you believe in me. But even if I didn't set that fire at the cabin, I'm not in control. Look at jordan. Everybody thought she was such a-a good person.

Ciara: Because she was a good person.

Ben: Yeah, until she wasn'T. Nobody knew what was going on inside her head, not even me. Ciara, she wasn't just messed up, she was delusional. She thought she was helping you. In reality, she was trying to inject you with a sedative, trying to light you on fire and kill you. That made me want to kill her, my own sister, who took care of me and kept me going for years. Do you understand that?

Ciara: I do, but what I keep telling you is that you were trying to stop her from hurting or killing me. That is different. That's a situation. You're not evil.

Ben: There's still evil inside of me. I used to think I had control over it. But I don't think that anymore.

Ciara: Okay, well... if you're really scared of what you might do, then, we have to deal with that.

Ben: Not "we." Me.

Ciara: No.

Ben: Yeah.

Ciara: No. You need backup. You can start seeing marlena again, and you have me. I'm right here. I will look out for you. And I will stand by you always.

[Uplifting music]

Ben: My god, you don't know how bad I want that to work. But when I tell you I don't have any control, I really mean it. I can't take the chance on doing to you what I almost did to jordan.

[Melancholy music]

Claire: You know, I don't want to argue about haley anymore either. Very much like you to give her the benefit of the doubt. You do that for everyone. Even me.

Tripp: Yeah, I shouldn't have thrown that "bella" thing in your face either. You're right. It's not like you committed a serious crime or anything.

Claire: Yes, I may have made some mistakes in my life, some very big ones. But I'm not evil. Wow, okay, it's way later than I thought. I gotta go, um, get changed for work.

[Suspenseful music]

[Dramatic whooshing] All right. Mystery solved.

Eve: You know, we really should play up that you were a prisoner of war.

Jack: Mm. I was at the front because I was a journalist. Not a soldier.

Eve: Yeah, but you were telling their story, so you suffered right alongside them.

[Knocking on door] Uh-huh. Trask. Probably coming back for a second round--

Jennifer: No, it's me. And I'm just getting started. Do you know the police just showed up at jj's apartment to arrest haley? Are you happy now, jack?

Eve: So they got her?

Jennifer: No, they didn't get her. Sorry to disappoint you.

Eve: You know, jack and i didn't force her to come into this country illegally.

Jennifer: How dare you, after everything you have done, criticize anyone, eve? Jj stands up for people. That's who he is, and that is what I love about him, and I cannot believe you took his unselfish act and used it to your advantage.

Jack: Haley's the one taking advantage here, jennifer.

Eve: That's right.

Jennifer: You shut up. How does it feel, knowing that this poor girl who your son happens to care about is about to be picked up and detained? And it's all because of you.

Jack: This is the second time you let me have it. But I still think I did the right thing. For the voters of salem and for our son.

Jennifer: The right thing for our son? His father lied to him and betrayed his trust. No, jack, the only right thing that will come out of what you did is that abe carver will be reelected.

Jack: That may not be true. Now that melinda's formally dropped out of the race, party wants to meet with me about running.

Jennifer: You are kidding me.

Eve: Nope. He's right.

Jennifer: You know, when i met you, jack, you were so selfish and self-serving, and that--that was just who you were, but that was a long time ago. I never thought you would put your own ambitions above your son's happiness. I told jj you were better than that. I guess I was wrong.

[Eerie music]

[Knocking on door]

Kayla: Come in.

Eli: Hey. We're looking for haley chen.

[Door shuts]

[Dramatic music]

[Elevator dings]

Haley: You--you leave me alone. I have nothing else to say to you. Let me go.

Jj: Listen to me. The police have been to my place. They're looking to take you in.

[Intense music]

Ciara: Will you stop talking about hurting me? I know you would never do that. Just stop.

Ben: I swear to god to you, I would never want to. When I look at you, and I see your face, all I want to do, I just want to be good to you. Ciara, I want to be with you, but I don't trust myself.

I'm no good for you, ciara. The best thing... that we can do right now is just not see each other anymore.

[Somber music]

Claire: Okay, I am off to work. Do you want to meet me after or something?

Tripp: Is this my present?

[Percussive music]
