Tripp: No, I'm on my way to the hospital. The cook accidentally burned me.

Kate: Does that mean you're not taking my order?

Tripp: I'm sure someone else will be along soon. Okay?

[Under breath] Bitch.

[Slinky music fades]

Ted: Happy to see you haven't changed a bit.

Eli: Hey, commish.

Hope: Hmm? Hey, eli. Do you need something?

Eli: Yes. I just talked to miller at the front desk. Rafe left for europe?

Hope: Yeah, yesterday.

Eli: What's going on?

Hope: He, uh, he went to be with sami and the kids.

Melinda: Just when I thought this department couldn't get more incompetent, you prove me wrong yet again.

Hope: Excuse me?

Melinda: You let another high-profile criminal go free, and this time, you're gonna have to answer for it.

Kayla: Ah, haley.

Haley: Oh, hey.

Kayla: I'm glad I caught you. I wanted to ask you how your first therapy session with marlena went.

Haley: [Chuckles] I have to admit, I was-- I was pretty nervous. I mean, it was my first time seeing a psychiatrist. Plus, I've never really been comfortable talking about myself.

Kayla: I understand. It can make you feel like you're under a microscope.

Haley: [Sighs] But dr. Evans was so nice. She really put me at ease. And before I knew it, I was-- I was opening up. Telling her things I've never told anyone.

Kayla: Sounds like you're making some real progress.

Haley: I hope so. I mean, it's not like all my problems are magically solved, but... I do feel a lot better. And I want you to know, I'm never gonna try taking my life again. I don't know why that was ever the answer, but... now I know it would've been a huge mistake. And I keep thinking about how close I came, and... just how grateful I am that jj found me in time.

[Door handle shuffles]

Jj: Hey, dad? Dad. Jack?

Jack: Hmm? Oh! Jj. Excuse me, I am, uh-- actually, I heard you the first two times.

Jj: Ah, but you're probably not used to hearing someone call you "dad."

Jack: Uh... I guess, yeah. So... you're here meeting someone?

Jj: Oh, I just, uh, just got off work, so I usually stop by and grab a beer.

Jack: Oh. Well... don't let me keep you.

Jj: Actually, you want to-- you want to join me?

Jack: Oh. Uh... well, sure. Sure! Why not?

Eve: Ten percent of the solution multiplied by that squiggle with a line through it? Oh, my gosh. Cannot believe that this gibberish is actually gonna get jack's memory back.

[Sighs] Hopefully, it'll be years before the fda approves it, if they ever do. I just need to make sure that this doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Then I get to keep jack all to myself. I don't know, maybe I need to destroy it altogether, then.

[Knocking on door] Uh, just a minute! Coming.

[Groans] Jennifer, do you ever take a hint? You... are... not... welcome... here!

Jennifer: Sorry. You're not getting rid of me that easily, eve.

Jj: So what had you so engrossed?

Jack: This?

Jj: Mm-hmm.

Jack: Uh, I am, uh, I'm just looking at the political landscape of salem. Eve tells me I used to be a, uh, politician.

Jj: Yeah. Yeah, the state legislature. Yeah, you used to tell me all kinds of stories about it.

Jack: As a punishment, I'm sure. It couldn't have been too interesting.

Jj: No, no. No, it was. I mean, it could be dry sometimes, but yeah.

Jack: Yeah.

Jj: You always found a way to make it interesting. You had a real passion for it. Almost as much as journalism. You would turn dinner into a impromptu civics lesson. You even gave me a gavel and a copy of "robert's rules of order."

Jack: You're kidding.

Jj: Swear to god.

Jack: That's funny. [Laughs] I almost wish I remembered that.

Jj: Well, seems like you're--you're getting the passion back, if not the memories.

Jack: Yes. Yes, uh... so, I'm-- I'm looking into some-- the upcoming mayoral race. I'm just getting a couple ideas here I thought might work.

Jj: Wait, are you-- are you actually thinking about running against abe carver?

Jack: Well, I was. I mean, do you know much about him?

Jj: Uh, well, I-- I used to date his daughter. I, uh...

[Sighs] I almost killed his son.

Eve: What do you want?

Jennifer: I need to see jack.

[Dramatic music]

Eve: Not here.

Jennifer: Oh, no. Did he walk out on you?

[Gasps] Was it because I told him that you were gonna trick him into marrying you? Gosh, I hope I didn't ruin your little evil scheme!

Eve: Nice try, you little tattletale. But I hate to break it to you, your little plan to out me was a bust. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I didn't have any problem admitting the truth to jack. I just told him flat out that I wanted to marry him again.

Jennifer: Mm. Did you tell him it's because you want to stick it to me, eve?

Eve: God, I keep forgetting how self-centered you are. This is so not about you, jennifer! No. No, see, jack and I, we're two of a kind. We're cut from the same cloth, and that is a fact that I just happily reminded him of. Yeah, we belong together, but sticking it to you, now, that--that is--oh, gosh, what would you call it? A fringe benefit.

Jennifer: Too bad you won't get the chance, because I hate to tell you, your little plan is not going to work, because jack would never marry you.

Eve: Really? Hmm. Think you might be wrong about that, 'cause I think he's opening his mind to that idea. In fact... [Chuckles] He just bought me a bridal magazine. Boom.

Melinda: You let xander cook slip through your fingers. How am I supposed to prosecute any criminals when you keep letting them walk?

Hope: Don't you think that I want to nail that bastard to the wall? He shot one of my closest friends. We didn't have a choice. We had to let to him go.

Melinda: How on earth is that possible? You had indisputable proof of his guilt. He was caught on tape firing his gun!

Eli: Unfortunately, that evidence no longer exists.

Melinda: What do you mean?

Eli: Detective price and i tried to pull the security footage from the server, but it had been deleted.

Melinda: What? You have got to be kidding me!

Abe: You know, I can hear you all the way down the hall. What's the commotion?

Melinda: Ask your brilliant commissioner. Thanks to her and her worthless department, xander cook is a free man. Well... you know what? I'm sorry, but you cannot allow such gross incompetence to stand any longer. You need to fire hope brady-hernandez.

[Dramatic music]

Haley: Jj's done so much for me. I don't know how I'm ever gonna repay him. Especially now that he's letting me crash at his place.

Kayla: You're staying at jj's?

Haley: Only temporarily. Just until I find someplace new.

Kayla: What happened to where you were living? Was there a problem?

Haley: My old roommate, she, uh, she decided that our living situation was no longer convenient for her. Kind of threw me out. Jj was a real lifesaver. Again. Gosh, I-I don't think I've ever met anyone so generous and compassionate and...

Kayla: Sounds like you and my nephew are getting pretty close.

Haley: We're just friends.

[Elevator dings]

Kayla: Tripp. What happened?

Tripp: Work. The cook accidentally got me with some hot oil. I'm sure it's fine, but fran insisted I come down and get it checked out. You know, I guess she doesn't want a lawsuit.

Kayla: Uh-huh. Well, let's go check it out ourselves, okay?

Tripp: All right.

Kayla: Come with me.

Jj: Shooting theo was-- was the worst moment of my life. It nearly cost someone his life, over a complete misunderstanding.

Jack: That's horrible. I-I can't imagine what you went through.

Jj: I felt really guilty. So I-- I almost ended my own life.

Jack: I'm sorry I wasn't there for you.

Jj: Me too.

Jack: But I-- I don't know how much help I would've been. Dinner table civics lessons aside, I don't know how much of a father I really was.

Jj: Oh, you were an amazing one. Uh, you were kind of my idol.

Jack: Uh, I-I find it hard to believe that I could be anyone's idol.

Jj: No, you were. I always looked up to you. This--this past year, I, uh, when I was really struggling, I... I thought about you nonstop. How much you were there for me. If I could've just... talked to you... but, uh, luckily, I had A... I had a lot of other people who supported me and wanted to help me, and I was able to turn to them. That's what saved me. And that's why, just, now, I'm just trying to pay it forward, by being there for someone else.

Jack: You're talking about the girl from new year's eve.

Jj: How'd you know?

Jack: Uh... father's intuition. Uh... she's your girlfriend?

Jj: What? No.

[Clears throat] No.

Jack: Hoping she will be?

Jennifer: You really think that magazine means anything?

Eve: Only that jack and i are gonna be tying the knot in the near future, and of course, he wants me to look my hottest on our wedding day.

Jennifer: Oh, yeah. You are so delusional, you know that? Because the only way that jack would ever marry you is because he doesn't remember who you are. Or who he is, for that matter, because if he had his memory back, he would run as far away from you as possible.

Eve: Well, you know what? That's debatable. And irrelevant, because jack doesn't have his memory back, now, does he?

Jennifer: No. Not yet.

Eve: Wow, you seem confident. I think it's a crapshoot. Who's to say whether he's gonna get his memory back or not?

Jennifer: He's going to, because there's a serum that he can take.

Eve: Oh. Right, that'S... that dr. Rolf's magical elixir? Isn't it in the hands of the fda right now, waiting for approval? I mean, that could take years, and by then, you know, jack and I will be living in wedded bliss.

[Chuckles] It's kind of a shame there's not another copy of that lying around somewhere.

Jennifer: You know what, there is. There's dr. Rolf's original diary.

Eve: Really? Well, what happened to it?

Jennifer: Seth burns lost it, apparently.

Eve: Lost it? Now, that's weird. Right? I mean, why would someone be so careless about something so important?

[Cymbal shimmering] Oh! Oh!

Kate: Hope hernandez, huh? What does she have to do with anything?

Ted: Oh, well, she helped me when I first got back to salem. Gave me police protection. Kept me safe from stefan dimera.

Kate: I see. Well, she is the commissioner. That's her job.

Ted: True. But... uh, you know. She went above and beyond. Considering I-I haven't made her job easy. The least I can do is to try to be an upstanding citizen.

Kate: [Laughs] You?

Ted: Yeah. From now on, I'm keeping my nose clean.

Kate: Oh, do you actually expect me to believe that?

Ted: You can ask hope. I've been spending some time with her.

Kate: You do know she's a married woman, right?

Ted: Oh. All too well. I had a few unpleasant run-ins with her husband. Kate, I don't think the man likes me very much.

Kate: Probably because you're moving in on his wife.

Ted: Oh, definitely not. Now, don't get me wrong, hope is a beautiful and impressive woman, but... I'm really trying to make things work with another beautiful and impressive woman.

Kate: [Laughs] You have to be kidding me.

Ted: What do you think, kate? Can we start over?

Eli: Hold up. Hope is an amazing commissioner. I mean, she's fair, she's smart, she's--

Melinda: Your cousin. Of course you would defend her.

Hope: Look, I know our department's taken a lot of hits lately. We've had a run of suspects we couldn't get to trial.

Melinda: So you see? She admits it.

Hope: Yes. Of course I admit it, melinda. I'm just as frustrated as you are. But as I was about to say, in all of those cases, our hands have been tied because we haven't had enough evidence to support them.

Melinda: Uh, isn't that your job? To find the evidence?

Eli: Not if the evidence doesn't exist.

Melinda: Except the evidence against xander cook did exist. It even ended up right here on the server. But somehow, your inept department still managed to delete it.

Abe: It wasn't the department's fault. It was my office that made the mistake. The buck stops with me.

Kayla: Well, you know what? It's not that bad. I think it's just a first-degree burn.

Tripp: Yeah, I didn't think it was that big of a deal.

Kayla: Well, I'm glad you came in. Your father's already not happy with me, and if I let you get hurt while he's away, well, forget it.

Tripp: Yeah, I, uh, I heard about the bad news about stefan dimera being let out of jail. So, what, he was just completely exonerated?

Kayla: Well, apparently, the, uh, lead engineer of the biotech company confessed. He claims that it was him, not stefan, who used your dad's bionic eye to access the top-secret files.

Haley: E-excuse me, what?

Tripp: It's a long story.

Haley: I bet.

Kayla: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. This is my stepson tripp.

Haley: Hi. Nice to meet you.

Tripp: Likewise.

Kayla: Well, now that you are formally introduced, I'm going to let her dress it for me, okay? I got a phone call. See you later, all right?

Tripp: See you.

Kayla: Thank you.

Haley: Of course. Okay.

[Door shuts]

[Uplifting music]

Jj: Dad, haley and I are-- are just friends. That's it. And, well, roommates. Look, I... been wanting to ask you, um... how did things go with-- with you and mom? After abigail and I left the other night?

Jack: Uh... it was nice.

Jj: But?

Jack: I think I have more in common with eve.

Jj: You have no idea how wrong you are.

Jack: I could see that, what, from your reaction new year's eve, you're not a fan.

Jj: Definitely not. Dad. You can't trust eve. She's just using you as a pawn to get to mom. To hurt mom. Same way she used me.

Jack: What, did she try to sleep with you too? Oh.

Jennifer: I don't care how long it takes. Jack will get his memory back, and it's only a matter of time. All he needs is one little trigger, eve.

Eve: Mm, but see, there's the problem, jennifer. He's been around you plenty these days, hasn't he? Right? And what has he remembered? Absolutely zero!

[Laughs] So I don't know, without that serum, I don't think he's gonna get his memory back, actually. But if he did get his memory back, I can tell you this much. He would choose me any day over you, because all you've ever done is make that man miserable.

Jennifer: Oh, my gosh. Are you serious?

Eve: Yeah, I'm telling you the truth.

Jennifer: You really believe that jack would choose you? You're even more delusional than I thought. The real jack would never love you. And you know it. That's why you have to play dirty.

Eve: Well, you're wrong about that! And I'll prove it. As the one who is always trapped beneath the duvet

Haley: There. That should do it.

Tripp: Thank you. Looks great.

Haley: Uh, just remember to change the dressing every day. Kayla's--uh, she prescribed you that tube of ointment that I used on you. Just be careful not to wrap it too tightly.

Tripp: You got it. I actually kind of remember a lot of this stuff from when I was studying for the med school exam.

Haley: Oh. Med school. So you're gonna be a doctor.

Tripp: No, no, not anymore.

Haley: What happened?

Tripp: I made a huge mistake and, uh, change of plans. What about you? You always want to be a nurse?

Haley: Oh. I love being a nurse, but, when I was younger, I wanted to own a rabbit farm.

Tripp: Okay.

Haley: Hey. Not just any rabbits. Giant rabbits. You know, some breeds can grow up to 4 feet.

Tripp: Ooh, that sounds horrifying.

Haley: I think you mean completely adorable.

Tripp: Yeah, maybe for some, all right, but no, I-- I have a weird thing about rabbits, I don't know, ever since I saw "donnie darko" as a kid.

Haley: As a kid? No wonder you're scared of rabbits.

Tripp: Well, I didn't say scared, per se, all right? I meant, you know, I'm-- I'm not a fan of rabbits, I guess. But you're probably right. I probably watched a lot of things I shouldn't have. My dad wasn't really around.

Haley: Oh. The one with the bionic eye.

Tripp: No, no. My adopted dad.

Haley: Oh. Okay, and I-- I thought I had a complicated life.

[Both chuckle]

Abe: My office was tricked into providing security footage of xander cook.

Melinda: To whom?

Abe: Unfortunately, xander himself. He was pretending to be john black.

Melinda: John black should not have had access in the first place! But... you can never say no to a friend, can you? Now, thanks to your handing out special favors, this department's security has been breached.

Abe: You are on thin ice, melinda. I'd advise you to watch your tone.

Melinda: I will watch my tone when you watch this department. You and your whole law enforcement team, you're a total joke. I refuse to be associated with this anymore.

Abe: What are you saying?

Melinda: I'm saying... I quit.

[Dramatic music]

Hope: Thanks for having my back earlier.

Eli: I meant every word. You're a great boss.

Hope: Well, you remember those words when I ask you to work overtime to fill in for rafe, okay?

Eli: So, hey, so what-- what's the deal with that? Why did he take off to be with sami and her kids?

Hope: Because sami asked for rafe's help, with her son, johnny. Johnny's dad, ej, is in terrible shape, as you know, and his recovery's taking a lot longer than expected. Rafe and johnny had a good relationship when he and sami were married.

Eli: Yeah, he mentioned how much he enjoyed being a stepdad. Um, so, how long will he be gone?

Hope: I don't know.

Eli: You don't seem too thrilled about that.

Hope: I thought samantha brady was in our rearview mirror.

Kate: Are you sure this isn't some type of ploy to lure me in so you can get close enough to kill me?

Ted: I-I-I'm not a killer. Kate, what we had was really great. A-and I messed it up. I just need a chance to fix it.

Kate: After what I did to you?

Ted: Well, like I said, I put you in a terrible position. And I forgive you. Now, can you forgive me as well?

Kate: I don't need you to forgive me. I don't want you to forgive me.

Ted: Kate. We had something special. You meant something to me.

Kate: But you chose money and power over me.

Ted: I won't make that same mistake again.

Kate: You're right. You won'T. Because I'm not giving you the chance.

Eli: If you're worried about rafe and sami being alone together, hope, he loves you so much. All right? He would never make that mistake again.

Hope: It's just not a great time for him to be away. That's it.

Eli: Is that because of what happened with ted laurent?

Hope: What?

Eli: Oh, I'M... sorry. It's none of my business.

[Dramatic music]

Abe: You quit? Don't you think that's a little bit rash?

Melinda: I don't, actually. I've been planning to resign for quite some time. I'm sick of dealing with everyone else's screw-ups, and this is as good a time as any to bow out.

Abe: Well, I'm sorry to hear that, but I accept your resignation, so feel free to clear out your office.

Melinda: Gladly. I'll finally be able to move on to bigger and better things.

Jack: Eve seduced you to hurt your mother.

Jj: It's not exactly that. I-I do share some of the responsibility. Um, but yes, I do believe that eve got involved with me because she knew it'd upset mom.

Jack: I see.

Jj: You okay? You seem a little freaked.

Jack: Um... yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine, I just, uh... it's just strange, you know, to... realize that your son has exactly the same taste in women.

Jj: On that awkward note, I... think I'm gonna get out of here.

Jack: No, no, no, no. Wait, wait, wait. Please, jj, um... I-I-I'm really glad... that you and I had a chance to talk, just the two of us. And... I'm--I'm sorry I haven't been there for you. But... memory or no memory, I want to make up for lost time. I want you to know, I'm here for you now. Whenever you need me.

Jj: Thank you. You know what, um, I want to let you know, too, that, uh, if you ever want to talk, um, you can just-- you can come over to my place. I'm not too far from here. Um, no, how about-- how about I give you my address?

Jack: Please do, please do.

Jj: All right. You know what, actually, I have a card here with, uh, all my info on it.

Jack: Yeah. Great.

Jj: You know, can I, uh, can I give you a little advice?

Jack: Yes. Please.

Jj: Uh, if you're thinking about running for mayor, y-you should know that abe carver's pretty popular around here. Defeating him's not gonna be easy.

Jack: I'll take that under advisement.

[Pensive music]

Eve: So you want proof, jenny? Okay. I'll give you proof.

[Funky rock music]

Jennifer: What is it, eve?

Eve: What is it? Well, it's a contract, jennifer, from chad dimera, offering me a very lucrative job in paris. So you tell me, if I was so afraid of losing jack to you, don't you think that I would've taken that job, taken jack with me, just to keep him away from you and your kids? But I didn't do that, did I? No. I stayed right here in salem.

Jennifer: Yeah, you stayed here because you want to rub your relationship with jack in my face.

Eve: No, jennifer. I'm confident that he's gonna choose me. It's just a matter of time, 'cause he's falling hard. I'm gonna be humming...

Jennifer: Oh, my gosh. This is amazing. You really are so sick and twisted, you know that? But the good news is, it's only a matter of time before jack notices, and then it's over. And you're alone. As always.

Kate: No. You cannot. I spent months tangled up in lies, deception, and blackmail. And now I can breathe freely.

Ted: Okay. I understand. But I have one last request. The last time we saw each other, you held a gun on me until stefan's goon arrived and took me away. Hardly a fitting end to our relationship. So... how about... how about one last kiss good-bye?

[Unsettling music]

Kayla: Hey! Wow. Looks like haley did a pretty good job patching you up.

Tripp: Yeah, she did. I didn't--didn't feel a thing.

Kayla: That's great. It looks good.

Tripp: Yeah, uh... listen, you mentioned my dad before, and I just meant to ask you, have you-- have you heard from him? You know, I figured since this whole treason thing has been settled, he has to be coming home, right?

Kayla: I wish I knew. But I'm--I'm sure he wants to get back here, especially now that we've all found out this incredible news about jack. I mean, I'm sure he wants to be reunited with his brother.

Eve: Okay. It is a good thing that seth burns isn't too careful with his office keys.

Jack: Eve! You have some explaining to do.

[Percussive music]

Haley: Oh! Good, you're home. I was feeling ambitious, so I decided to make dinner. How do you feel about chicken linguine with aioli?

Jj: Uh, that sounds great. Thank you.

Haley: Hey, it's the least I can do after you made me your famous scrambled eggs.

[Sighs] And let me crash at your place.

Jj: Uh, have you talked to melinda since then?

Haley: No, I-I haven'T. But it's probably best for everyone this way.

[Pensive music]

Melinda: Thank you for coming.

Jennifer: It was against my better judgment. I'm not really a fan of yours after the way you treated my daughter.

Melinda: I was trying to convict someone who had committed a crime. It doesn't always make you friends. But you don't need to worry about that anymore. I've just resigned as da.

Jennifer: You did? Why?

Melinda: That's actually why I asked you to meet. I have a major scoop for your little paper. So there you are with your depression

Tripp: I gotta say, I'm pretty curious to meet my uncle jack.

Kayla: Well, you may have to wait a little bit longer. You see, uh, jack's not quite himself right now. He, um, lost his memory.

Tripp: I mean, it could still come back, though, right? I mean, maybe even my dad could help out with that.

Kayla: Yeah, if and when he does.

Tripp: He will. Hey, look, I-- I know you guys have had your problems, but he loves you very much, okay? Don't ever forget that.

Kayla: Thanks for that.

Ted: I think our relationship deserves a proper closure. Despite everything that happened between us, we had something. Wouldn't you agree?

Eli: Hey, abe. I saw da trask storm out of here a little while ago. I take it your conversation didn't go too well?

Abe: Well, melinda just resigned.

Eli: Are you kidding me? Yes! Well, now we don't have to worry about her skulking around here. That woman is a nightmare.

Abe: Well, working with her wasn't exactly easy for me either.

Eli: Well, now she won't be a problem for you anymore.

[Dramatic music]

Jennifer: Are you sure about this?

Melinda: Positive. Just run the story. Oh, and... you're welcome.

Haley: So. How was your day?

Jj: Oh, it was good, actually. Just--I just had a beer with my dad.

Haley: That's great. Right?

Jj: Yeah. Yeah, it is, um... I felt like we kinda connected. Even if he doesn't remember me.

Haley: You know, sometimes, you just--you have this natural connection with certain people, even if you can't explain it. You know what I mean?

Jj: Yeah. Yeah, I do.

[Tender music]

Eve: Uh, explanation? Um... what--what--what do you mean, jack?

Jack: You slept with my son!

Eve: Oh. That. I... look, that's ancient history. Come on, you're not gonna judge me for one horrendous mistake. I was going through a hard time. Exactly like you were when you slept with jennifer's mother.

Jack: I did--what?

Eve: Yeah. You did, jack. Like I told you, we both have made some bad mistakes.
