Abigail: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Well, I actually just, um-- I just finished a project, and I'm kind of looking to start something new, hopefully, um-- well, hopefully, something in one of Salem U's offices. [Laughs] [Clears throat] Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes, you can reach me at this number, mm-hmm. It's Abigail DiMera--Deveraux. Um... my name is Abigail Deveraux. I look forward to hearing from you. [Sighs]

Dario: Hey. Everything okay?

Abigail: As far as I know.

Dario: Last night, you said you were going back to the mansion to pack your things and--

Abigail: What? What? Were you worried that I was gonna cave and stay with Chad after all? Because I didn't. Look, you don't have to babysit me, Dario. I'm okay.

Dario: This--this isn't about babysitting. Last time we spoke, you said you could use a friend. Well, here I am.

[Soft dramatic music]

Abigail: I just-- I want you to be happy. Honey, if I thought that I could make you happy, I wouldn't leave you. But I have to admit this, and I have to accept it.

Chad: Oh, no.

Abigail: [Sighs]

Chad: [Stammers]

[Footsteps tapping]

Chad: Hey. Hi, sonny. Um...[Clears throat] I thought you were Abby.

Sonny: I'm sorry, Chad.

Chad: You heard?

Sonny: From Gabi.

Gabi: Um, excuse me. I wanted to check on the status of a patient that was admitted last night, Julie Williams?

Uh, are you family?

Eli: I am.

Gabi: Eli, I was just--

Eli: My grandmother will be fine. Is that a problem for you?

Julie: Oh, thank you, darling. You are just too much.

Doug: I knew you'd never be eating that cafeteria oatmeal. Bzz, bzz.

Julie: [Laughs]

Doug: Of course, I had to sneak this past those Hawkeye nurses.

Julie: You're a gem. I'm sorry I worried you.

Doug: You worried hope too, until, uh, Valerie assured us that it was not a heart attack, that you--you were really fine.

Julie: Well, I'm fine now.

Doug: Yeah. Well, I sat with you a bit while you slept. You seemed very agitated. Did you have a bad dream?

Julie: More like a nightmare named Gabi Hernandez.

Doug: AH. Yes, Eli said that the two of you had had words prior to your alleged episode, but he didn't know what it was about.

Julie: Well, I started to tell him, but I could not bring myself to repeat the vile things she said to me.

Doug: Vile enough to make you almost pass out?

Julie: I also forgot to take my, uh, blood pressure medication.

Doug: Ah.

Julie: Gabi's little tirade didn't help.

Doug: Are you--you absolutely sure that you didn't exaggerated your symptoms to make Gabi look worse?

Julie: Of course not. Doug, my heart was pounding like a drum. Maybe a little. The girl is a man-eater, Doug. And if nobody else is going to try to look out for the men in this family, I'm going to have to.

Sonny: So fill me in. What triggered Abigail's sudden case of cold feet?

Chad: [Groans] Um... I, uh-- I told her that I had these unresolved feelings for--for Gabi. And, I mean, I was honest about it. I told her the truth. And I also told her that I-I-I was 100% committed to our marriage and that it-- that they wouldn't affect it in any way.

Sonny: Maybe she was just worried that your feelings for Gabi would never go away.

Chad: I don't know. I just wish that I could make her... believe that she was the only one for me.

Sonny: My advice? Just do nothing right now, you know? Just step back and give her what she needs most, man. I'm telling you. It's--it's time and space.

Abigail: Look, I will never be able to thank you for everything that you did for me when I first got back to Salem.

Dario: I mostly just listened.

Abigail: No, I mean, you did a lot more than that. You helped me through all the horrible panic attacks, and you just-- you made me feel safe. I was literally--I was falling apart, and you just brought me back from the brink every time. But things are different now because I am different. It's like I told you last night. I'm not the fragile girl I was when I first got back, okay? I can and I want to stand on my own now.

Dario: I think-- I think that's great, but just in case you can't--

Abigail: No, there's no "just in case," okay? Not anymore. I don't need a safety net. If I fall, I want to pick myself back up. And I need you to believe that I can.

[Soft music]

[Soft country music]

Dario: I respect you wanting to take care of yourself, and I admire how far you've come in such a short amount of time.

Abigail: Well, I would think that you, more than anyone, would be able to see how much stronger I am than what I was when I first got back.

Dario: You couldn't have been able to walk away from a man you still love if you were that same girl. It took a lot of courage.

Abigail: You know, truth be told, I... I wasn't sure I was gonna be able to do it. But I just put on my bravest face and... powered through it.

Dario: That's the thing. You can show that brave face to Chad and the rest of your family, and they may not be able to look past it, but... right now, I can see you're going through a lot.

Abigail: I will be fine.

Dario: You don't have to do this alone. I'm--I'm here. You--you can lean on me.

Abigail: No, no. I thought I already made that clear. I can't.

Dario: Because I told you how I felt? Listen, I... I get that you don't feel the same way. And I respect you too much to ever take advantage of your pain.

Abigail: I know that. And while you having my back does sound very comforting, I just--I need to do this on my own.

Dario: Fair enough. But if you ever need any help--

Abigail: You will be the first to know, okay? [Laughs] But right now, I just-- I don't have the time or the energy for anything but trying to figure out how I'm gonna get my life back on track. And since I don't really have a clue how that's gonna happen, I just-- I need the time and I need some space so I can figure it all out.

Chad: No, you know what? I-I-I get that she--she might need some space, but--but you're gonna--you're gonna tell me while we're renewing our vows in front of our entire family? That doesn't make any sense to me.

Sonny: Well, I'm sure the timing wasn't ideal for her either.

Chad: Well, she just-- she just thinks that I'm just gonna stand by and watch her walk out of my life? No, she's--she's wrong, man. I... when I thought I lost her the first time, it almost killed me, sonny. I can't do it. I can't lose her again.

Sonny: Chad, hey. I know that you're committed to convincing her to stick it out. But trust me, what Abigail and Gabi both need is just time to figure out what they really want.

Chad: Gabi seems to think that--that Abby's just doing this 'cause it's what she thinks is best for me, so...

Sonny: No, I don't think-- it just sounds like she's looking out for herself. She needs to protect herself emotionally. Her stepping aside for you and Gabi to be together, I think, is a step towards resolution for Abigail.

Chad: Well, ironically, Gabi thinks that I should be working on my marriage.

Sonny: Well, that's Gabi for you.

Chad: True that.

Sonny: I think you need to be focusing on what bonds you and Abigail.

Chad: [Sighs] Thomas.

Sonny: Exactly. For his sake, you need to-- you need to stay calm. You need to stay steady. And trust me, if you and Abigail are meant to be together, you will be.

Chad: Hmm.

Julie: Gabi started it. It's all her fault. I warned her, stay away from Eli. She would not listen.

Doug: Isn't it up to Eli to decide who he wants and does not want in his life?

Julie: I made a vow to myself on David's memory that I would look after Eli. And I'll be damned if that junior-grade spider woman is going to pull him into her web.

Doug: Sweetheart, Eli's a grown man. He's not a boy. He's perfectly capable of looking after himself. You need to back off and let him do that.

Gabi: Look, I'm not proud of flipping out on your grandmother. But you have to understand, this whole thing between her and I, it's been coming for a long time.

Eli: Yeah, so I hear.

Gabi: What did she say?

Eli: Basically, that you were trouble and I should steer clear of you.

Gabi: Unbelievable. I mean, especially since she's the one that--

Eli: Gabi, I really don't want to hear it.

Gabi: [Sighs]

Eli: My grandmother has been really great to me.

Gabi: Well, she has no reason not to be great to you. But do not get fooled with her oh-so-sweet smile and her "honey, darling," because Julie can be a bully.

Eli: Well, so much for not trashing her.

Gabi: Look, she knew I was down about Chad. And so she saw a chance to kick me where it hurts.

Eli: Sounded like you kicked back.

Gabi: I'm not the kind of person that's just gonna take abuse lying down. I will always defend myself. I will always defend the people I care about.

Eli: Oh, no, you don't.

Gabi: I'm gonna apologize-- but only for my part in this.

[Dramatic music]

Jennifer: Sweetie... I'm so glad you called. When I woke up and I saw that you were gone, I just-- I was so worried that--

Abigail: What, that I had disappeared? Mom, I'm not gonna do that to you again.

Jennifer: Would you do it to Chad? Because I know he is such a wreck right now.

Abigail: [Sighs] I never meant to hurt him. But I can't stay married to a man who--who can't give me his whole heart.

Jennifer: Honey, I know that--that you think Chad is torn because of everything that he told you about Gabi. And I know this has been an issue since you came back, because we have gone over it so many times. But I said this from the beginning, and I still believe it completely, that you are the love of Chad's life.

Abigail: [Sighs] So, what, so Gabi comes in second? 'Cause I'm not really comfortable with the competition.

Jennifer: No, honey, I just think he has so many emotions going on right now and you just need to give him a little more time.

Abigail: That's all I've done, mom. All I've done is give him time. I mean, for the last month, I have examined and reexamined every single aspect of my marriage, and I just-- I realized that Chad and I, we don't belong together. I'm okay, mom. I've accepted that, and I'm trying to move on, which is why I've spent the whole morning just on the computer looking at job and apartment listings.

Jennifer: You're just gonna move out of the mansion?

Abigail: Well, I can't stay in the same house as him, not after I told him I didn't want to stay married to him.

Jennifer: But it's not like he's pushing you out the door, honey.

Abigail: And I also can't keep working for his company. I got to be able to take care of my son, and since I can't really afford the nanny that Chad has hired, I need to find something that pays well enough so that I can hire someone I can afford.

Jennifer: Well, I am sure that Chad will take care of you and Thomas until you've figured out what you want to do.

Abigail: I don't think that you're hearing me. Mom, Chad cannot save me. I need to save myself. And that means letting go of my marriage and pulling my own weight as far as my son is concerned.

Jennifer: Okay, but you want a job? I can give you a job at "the spectator."

Abigail: No, okay? Thank you, mom, but no. I don't need you to get me a job, not at "the spectator" and not at the hospital. I need to find one on my own, and I will.

Jennifer: Yeah, of course you will. Yes, you will. And I think if we just put our heads together, we can figure something out. So let's just go back to the house so we can talk about it and figure something--

Abigail: No, no, no, no, no. I cannot just keep running back to my childhood home every time something goes wrong. I need my own place.

Jennifer: Honey, no, because you're--you're not ready for that.

Abigail: Is that really what you think?

Jennifer: No, I-I... I know that you are capable of doing anything that you put your mind to. But it wasn't that long ago that--that I lost you because you felt like life was--was too overwhelming. So living on your own and--and working is hard enough without having to worry about maybe--

Abigail: What? Cracking up again?

Jennifer: I didn't say that. I--

Abigail: Mom... I'm not the same person that I was. And I need you to stop worrying about me, and you've got to stop trying to save me from the world.

Jennifer: I will never stop doing that, not after what happened.

Abigail: Look, I would probably be the same way with Thomas if I had been through everything that you've been through with me. But that is why--that is why it is so important for me to stand on my own and why you have got to let me do that. I got to run, but I'll-- I'll talk to you later, okay?

Jennifer: Yeah, okay.

Abigail: I love you.

Jennifer: I love you. I love you so much.

Abigail. Okay. See ya.

[Soft music]

[Knock at door]

Kate: Hey, sweetheart, how you doing?

Chad: Oh, Kate, don't. Don't. I'm not--I am not in the mood for this, okay? Sonny was over here. He gave me the counseling session. I don't need any advice from you, okay?

Kate: I know. I know you're in a lot of pain.

Chad: Yeah, wow, you're very perceptive.

Kate: Sweetie... I didn't break off your marriage. But when Abigail did, I kept quiet because I-I know how much you wanted it to work between the two of you.

Chad: Yeah, well, I thought she wanted the same thing.

Kate: Maybe she realized that it wasn't working, you know. Maybe she got tired of trying. Whatever her reasons were, I think she did the right thing.

Chad: Of course you do. From the beginning, you never wanted Abigail and I to be together.

Kate: Because I know that you belong with Gabriella.

[Dramatic music]

Doug: Hello, Gabi.

Julie: I'm amazed you have the c-- gall to face me again.

Gabi: We need to talk.

Julie: I don't need to do anything with you.

Doug: Ladies, I believe I'm going to let the two of you clear the air here. Behave yourself.

Gabi: I know what you did... and why you did it. Hey, ready for the big meeting?

Julie: What I did? You are the reason I'm in this hospital.

Gabi: If that's true, I'm sorry.

Julie: "If"?

Gabi: Okay, look, that-- that's why I'm here, okay? Because I'm really upset that things got out of hand. I've been under a lot of pressure lately--pressure that I've put on myself to do the right thing.

Julie: If you want to do the right thing, just stay away from my grandson like I told you to.

Eric: Abigail? Hey, you okay?

Abigail: Yeah, I'm just wondering if coming back to Salem was such a good idea.

Eric: It's not how you pictured it would be?

Abigail: Not at all.

Eric: You know, I have time if you want to talk.

Abigail: I forgot you do that for a living.

Eric: Listening is one of the things I can say I do well.

Abigail: [Chuckles] It's not just coming back. I mean, it's--it's everything that I came back to and... how I was pretending that everything was okay when it wasn't.

Eric: Your marriage?

Abigail: It's over. And I got to move on from that. I got to move on from all of the people and all of the things that have been holding me back, and that is Chad. It's my marriage. It's my mother. It's...[Scoffs] She just--she does not understand that I need my freedom. And that is not just from Chad. It's from her. [Sighs] Now you probably think I'm a horrible daughter.

Eric: No, no, no, not at all. You know, if... you think your mom may be holding on too tight, maybe it's just because she blames herself for what happened when you were at shady hills.

Abigail: I know. I mean, I know she does, and I feel guilty that she feels guilty.

Eric: Well, sometimes parents look at their children as children.

Abigail: Are you saying she's always gonna feel like she's got to take care of me?

Eric: [Sighs] I just think it's gonna take some time.

Abigail: I mean, I get that worrying is what mothers do. I mean, there's not a second that goes by that I'm not worried about Thomas.

Eric: And he's a child, a small child who still needs you to hold his hand.

Abigail: Yes, and I don't. I need space. But I don't-- I don't want to hurt her by pushing her away.

Eric: Well, maybe if you can find a gentle way to help her step back, you'll allow yourself to move forward.

Abigail: Hmm. You know, it's really a relief to talk to someone that gets these feelings and does not think that I'm a spoiled brat for feeling that way.

Eric: I think you're very brave.

Abigail: My mom thinks that I made a mistake by leaving Chad, but I did it for myself.

Eric: She'll see that in time.

Abigail: [Sighs] Thank you. [Chuckles] I-I feel a lot better.

Eric: Remember, if you ever need to talk, I'm always here to listen.

Abigail: I appreciate that. Okay. I'll see ya.

Eric: Take care.

Chad: Kate, you are like a mother to me, but you really need to learn when to stop.

Kate: All I want is to see you happy.

Chad: Then you should know that Gabi and I, we're not gonna happen, okay? We've already agreed that I'm gonna make my marriage work, and that's that.

Kate: What about your feelings for Gabi, the feelings you expressed to Abigail?

Chad: Still there, and they're still unresolved, but--but--but you know what? They were never in any way a threat to my marriage, not ever.

Kate: How could you possibly say that?

Chad: Because... I knew, over time, that my feelings for Gabi would fade. But what won't fade is my commitment to my wife. And I will move heaven, earth, and hell if I got to to make her believe that.

Kate: Honey... you're just fighting the inevitable.

Chad: Kate, I've heard all of this before from you!

Kate: It's different now. It's different because Abigail has moved on, and now you need to do the same thing and move on with your life to be with the person that you love.

Chad: Hold on. Wait. What the-- what the hell are you talking about, she's moved on?

Kate: Oh, I'm so sorry, because I thought-- I thought you knew.

Chad: Kate, what the hell are you talking about?

Kate: I just saw Abigail with Dario Hernandez. They were at the pub together. Obviously, she has moved on.

Sonny: Hey, Eli.

Eli: Hey, sonny. What's up, man?

Sonny: Yeah, I just heard about your grandmother. I was dropping off some medical forms for my mom, and I overheard her nurse say that Doug was sneaking food into her room. How's she doing?

Eli: Well, she was okay. Let's just hope she's okay when Gabi comes out.

Sonny: I hear you and Gabi have been hanging out.

Eli: Yeah.

Sonny: Wait, did you say Gabi is with Julie?

Eli: Yeah, she went in to apologize--which she should since she's the reason that my grandmother was brought in.

Sonny: Gabi? What did she do?

Eli: Apparently, she and Julie got into an argument, and it escalated to the point where Julie almost collapsed.

Sonny: Yeah, well, I won't deny that those two have had some tension in the past. But I will tell you this: Gabi Hernandez is worth any trouble she may cause.

Gabi: Eli and I are having fun. He's a distraction. He's a reminder that my life doesn't have to be a total downer.

Julie: So you're using him.

Gabi: No, if he wants to spend time with me, that's his business, not yours.

Julie: Well, we'll see.

Gabi: It's not like I want to marry him or anything. At least not anytime soon. Oh, yeah, that fake heart attack stunt thing, it didn't work last night. It's not gonna work now.

Julie: How dare you?

Gabi: Best part is, I won't have to tell him how low his grandmother will stoop to get her way, because you just keep that whole manipulation thing, and the person he'll want to stay away from will be you.

Julie: Is this your concept of an apology, making peace-- coming in here and attacking me in my hospital bed?

Gabi: I mean, you asked for it.

Julie: Well, I'm not going to pull back either, sweetheart. And moving forward, as they say, I'm not just gonna be concerned about my grandson anymore, because Abigail is my family too. And if you do anything to hurt either one of them, you'll answer to me.

Chad: No, no, I don't-- I don't care what it costs. Just--I want it done.

[Knock at door]

Chad: I want-- hey. Um, that's exactly what I want. Thank you. I appreciate you getting it done so quickly. Hi.

Abigail: Hi. Um, is this a bad time?

Chad: No.

Abigail: I just came to get a few of my things, but I-I could come back tomorrow.

Chad: Will you--will you-- will you come somewhere with me real quick? I'd really like to show you something.

Sonny: You know, Julie hates Gabi because Gabi killed nick.

Eli: Yeah, I've heard all about it.

Sonny: From your grandmother? Well, did Julie tell you that nick was obsessed with Gabi? That he blackmailed her and stalked her and nearly raped her?

Eli: What? No.

Sonny: Yeah. Nick pushed Gabi to a point where she just could not take the abuse anymore, and she just...snapped.

Eli: Sonny, I had no idea.

Sonny: Yeah, well, Julie did. She knew all about it. But she chose to ignore the facts, and she made Gabi out to be this monster who killed nick. And the same thing happened when JJ and Gabi broke up. She ignored the fact that JJ cheated on her. Everyone has their limit. You know, Gabi's not one to back down from a fight. Believe me, I know.

Eli: You guys weren't always friends?

Sonny: I mean, we had our issues, um, and we probably will again. But that doesn't change the fact that Gabi is a great person. She has a heart of gold, and anyone would be lucky to have her in their corner. Well, hey, I'm gonna get going. I really do hope Julie's okay and she gets better. It's just, I'd be damned if I let anyone make Gabi out to be someone she's not.

Eli: Later, man.

Sonny: Take care.

[Soft dramatic music]

Kate: Didn't think I'd be coming in here again.

Dario: Hi, Kate.

Kate: Hey. I wanted to, um, stop by and thank you for bringing those gifts by the other day.

Dario: Sorry my father wasn't around to do it himself.

Kate: Yeah, me too. I guess some relationships just aren't meant to be, you know? Me and your father, Chad and Abigail.

Dario: I suppose so.

Kate: You know, I saw you earlier at the pub with Abigail.

Dario: You were there?

Kate: Yeah. Well, I didn't want to talk to you then because your conversation, it seemed so intense.

Dario: Yeah, Abigail's going through a lot right now.

Kate: Well, it looked like you were being really, really supportive.

Dario: [Chuckles softly] That's what friends are for.

Kate: You know, I have to admit that I've seen you together before. Would I be wrong to assume that your relationship is a little more than friendship?

Dario: She's a married woman.

Kate: Not for long.

[Both chuckle]

Dario: I care about Abigail a lot. And maybe I wouldn't mind being more than just friends.

Kate: Well, I'm not talking about your feelings for her. From what I saw, her feelings for you are a lot more than friendship.

[Stapler banging]

Jennifer: It's Abigail. She is going through hell, and I'm trying to help her, but--

Eric: She won't let you.

Jennifer: No, she won't.

Eric: She wants you to back off.

Jennifer: Yes, she does. Wait, how do you know that?

Eric: 'Cause I saw her. She's as frustrated with you as you are with her.

Abigail: What do you want to show me?

Chad: You'll see. We're almost there. Okay. Um, open your eyes.

Abigail: What is this all about?

Chad: You like scones, don't you?

Abigail: You know I do.

Chad: And mimosas.

Abigail: Yeah.

Chad: [Whistles]

Abigail: Chad, okay, what is this? Where is everyone?

Chad: So earlier--earlier when I was on the phone, I was making arrangements to have the, uh-- the square cleared.

[Soft guitar music playing]

Abigail: How did you do that?

Chad: I bribed everyone I could.

Abigail: Chad, I already told you--

Chad: Look, just give me a minute, please?

Abigail: [Sighs]

Chad: I believe that our love is the kind of love that people write stories about. I just need you to give me a chance to prove it.

Tech: When your windshield needs to be fixed...

Gabi: Look, I know you're still mad at me, but--

Eli: No, no. I'm not. In fact, I think I owe you an apology.

Gabi: [Chuckles softly] Good, 'cause I think I owe you one too.

Dario: You've got it all wrong. Abigail's made it very clear to me that any interest she has in me is strictly as a friend. Hell, she's not even sure she has room in her life for that.

Kate: Hmm. Well, once she moves on from her marriage, I don't think she's gonna want to be alone for long.

Dario: Well, that is what she wants now, and I have to respect her wishes.

Kate: And be patient.

Dario: What do you mean?

Kate: Well, I think if you give her the time and the space that she needs that she's gonna come around.

Dario: Like you did with my father?

Kate: Yeah. But that was too late.

Dario: You know, I spoke to him earlier. He said to keep an eye on you.

Kate: Oh. I am more than capable of looking after myself, thank you.

Dario: Ah! And that's exactly what he said you'd say. But I'm still gonna honor his request.

Kate: Well, knock yourself out.

Dario: I'm sorry the two of you didn't have the chance you both deserved.

Kate: I am too. But I've had more than enough chances. I'm going to make sure that you have your chance. I'm gonna watch out for you.

[Both laugh]

Dario: Knock yourself out.

Kate: I will. Because I believe that you have a chance for happiness yourself--with Abigail.

Jennifer: When did you see her?

Eric: In the park, sitting alone. She looked a little stressed, and I asked if she wanted to talk.

Jennifer: And she did?

Eric: You could see that she was hurting.

Jennifer: Right, which is why I am trying to help her. My daughter needs me, er--

Eric: Actually, she doesn't.

Jennifer: Excuse me?

Eric: Listen, if I thought that Abigail was in denial, I might agree with you. But Abigail, she is very aware of the challenges she's facing.

Jennifer: Eric, just because she is aware of them doesn't mean that she is prepared to deal with them.

Eric: I believe she is.

Jennifer: Really? Ending her marriage, you don't-- you don't think that's Abigail running away from her problems?

Eric: No, I don't. She's facing them head-on. She's showing strength and self-reliance. I think if she lets you help her, then she's still gonna feel like a helpless child.

Jennifer: She did say something like that to me.

Eric: Listen, what I think Abigail needs right now is a little space to grieve for what she's left behind and prepare for what's ahead of her.

Jennifer: But what if she can't do this on her own?

Eric: I think she can.

Jennifer: I want to believe you.

Eric: You trust me?

Jennifer: I do.

Eric: Then believe it. I do.

[Soft music]

Abigail: Chad, I don't know what to say.

Chad: Just--just please, um-- just give me a minute before you say anything. Um... I want you to know and see and, uh, feel how committed I am to us and our marriage and our future. Um... uh...[Chuckles nervously] These, um--these are the vows from our renewal. And I took them from my heart, and I put them onto paper. And I--and I didn't-- I didn't say the things I said for your--your mother or your brother or--or André or Kate. I-I said them because I wanted you to know in that moment how much I love you. Um... and I chose you to be my wife because I wanted every moment for the rest of our lives to be filled with our love. You know, so, um... I wrote them down, and I put them on the-- the paper for you to have because I wanted you to know that I-- that I-I mean them. And I want you to be able to hold me to them every day for the rest of our lives.

[Soft guitar music playing]

Abigail: [Sighs] [Sighs]
