Episode #12981 ~ Deimos lays out his theory about Chloe to a skeptical Brady; Steve & Paul meet with Sonny to update him on the Hernandez case; Steve & Kayla share some romance as he gives her an early Christmas gift; Derrick asks Paul if he has feelings for Sonny.

Kayla: Oh...what'd that poor computer ever do to you?

Sonny: I just can't seem to get a connection today.

Kayla: Mm. Well, if it makes you feel any better, I...I just came from seeing your mom. And she was in really good spirits after your visit. I told her I'd check in on her in the morning.

Sonny: That's good. If she was in good spirits, it's probably because I left. She just basically kicked me outta there today.

Kayla: She doesn't want you to worry.

Sonny: Well, she's my mom, and I want to be there for her.

Steve: Well... this is a nice surprise.

Kayla: Hi.

Steve: Hey.

Kayla: Hey. I just got a little coffee to go.

Steve: Okay.

Kayla: This a...business meeting?

Sonny: I hope you guys have the, uh, hard copies of the surveillance report. Because I can't get a signal to save my life.

Paul: As requested.

Kayla: Ah. I see. It is a business meeting.

Steve: Yeah. We better get started.

Sonny: I think that's a good idea.

Kayla: Oh. This my cue to leave or something? Hmm.

[Suspenseful music]

Nicole: "The spaceship flew up past the houses then past the mountains, all the way up into outer space! Whoosh! Jamie looked out her window and saw the planet all around her. She thought she was dreaming. She"--

Maggie: [Laughs] Isn't it past his bedtime?

Nicole: Yeah, well, he woke up and decided that he wanted to par-tay! Yeah, didn't ya, little buddy? Huh? And I have to say, you know, I'm kind of into a guy who wears feet pajamas.

[Both laughing]

Maggie: Oh, this is the first time this entire day that he hasn't been, uh, fussy from the teething. You certainly have a way with making him forget the pain.

Nicole: Well, he does the same for me. It breaks my heart...that I can't spend time with parker like this.

Maggie: Well, why can't you? Uh...Chloe did make you the unofficial aunt.

Nicole: Yeah, well, I think I've been stripped of my title.

Brady: You can't be serious.

Deimos: I couldn't be more serious.

Brady: Well, it's insane! How could Chloe possibly be carrying Nicole's and Daniel's baby?

[Dramatic music]

Kayla: So it's top secret business, is it? I'll leave you to it.

Steve: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Baby, wait, wait.

Paul: You seem tense. Is your mom okay?

Sonny: It's hard to tell. Every time I'm around, she just wants me to leave.

Kayla: So you gonna tell me what this "top secret" business is?

Steve: No. I really can't talk about it. But...I will reveal another secret if you meet me in the park off the square in about an hour. I promise to make it worth your while.

Kayla: Okay. I'll see you there.

[Christmas music plays in background]

Paul: Of course, she wants you around. She probably just...hates to see you worry about her.

Sonny: Yeah. I know. But, uh, why don't you tell me about the Hernandez shipping business. What's going on?

Paul: Well, yeah, as you can see here, we, uh, have around-the-clock surveillance down at the docks.

Sonny: Okay. But there's not a lot of activity.

Steve: No, which kinda surprises me because the kind of counterfeit luxury goods Eduardo and Dario are dealing in... they're usually moved in large volumes.

Sonny: So you think there's something else going on?

Steve: Well, maybe. Eduardo has a pretty dark past.

Sonny: Okay. Then I think we should go with our guts and keep running surveillance...see if it's more than just a couple of guys trying to make a buck on some fake designer items.

Steve: And if it isn't?

Sonny: Let it slide for now. If it turns out to be more sinister, I'll have a talk with Deimos. We can cut ties with the Hernandez family once and for all.

Deimos: It was bad enough they lied to me all those months, but when I overheard Philip tell Nancy that he would keep Chloe's secret... and that Nicole would flip out if she found out...I knew I had to do something.

Brady: You had to do something. Nothing too extreme--just, uh, drugging your nephew with sodium pentothal...

Deimos: Nicole deserved to know the truth.

Brady: I agree with you. She would deserve to know the truth, but I don't understand how any of this could be possible, all right?

Deimos: Did you even know that Chloe volunteered to be a surrogate for Nicole and Daniel?

Brady: No, I didn't know that.

Deimos: All right, well, that doesn't surprise me. Nicole said that they kept it pretty quiet. Apparently, the first IVF was unsuccessful. But they were determined to try again. Unfortunately, Daniel died before they could do that, and Nicole, well, she was too devastated to even consider surrogacy after that.

Brady: Hold on, hold on, hold on--that was over a year ago. It was over a year ago. So unless Chloe is having the longest pregnancy known--

Deimos: I asked Philip about the secret. He said the word embryo.

Brady: Said the word embryo. Okay, so--so you're--you're assuming because he said this one word--

Deimos: Under the influence of a truth serum--

Brady: You are completely convinced that Chloe is carrying Nicole's baby?

Deimos: Well, I may have gotten more out of him if you didn't storm in when--

Brady: Deimos, oh, my God! You know what, I--sorry. I don't have time to stand here and indulge you in these ridiculous assumptions, okay? You heard the word embryo? Come on, man.

Deimos: Brady, wait! There's more.

[Suspenseful music]

Steve: Okay, let's touch base in the next couple of days and see if there's a spike in activity down at the docks. Sonny, would you tell your mom I'll be by to see her real soon?

Sonny: I will. Thank you, uncle Steve.

Steve: All right. I'll see you guys.

[Country western Christmas carol plays in background]

Sonny: Look, I know I was a wreck the last time we spoke, and I just want you to know that I'M...I'm doing better. The doctors are hoping they caught my mom's cancer in the early stages.

Paul: And when will they decide on what kind of treatment they're gonna give her?

Sonny: Well, they're gonna run some more tests tonight and tomorrow, and then depending on the test results, they'll, uh, they'll know how to proceed.

Paul: Well, that's probably why she doesn't want anyone around...because she doesn't have the answers to the questions that they're asking. Come on, let's go get some fresh air.

Sonny: No, no, no, no. I-I really--I have too much work to do--I gotta get back to work.

Paul: You've been cooped up in a hotel and a hospital for the better part of two days. You and I both know you're gonna get more work done when you get back from this walk. Come on.

Sonny: All right, okay. You're right.

Nicole: You know, Chloe practically begged me to come to Chicago. Now she said she needed to... tell me something in person.

Maggie: And I assume you went.

Nicole: Well, yeah, I mean, of course I did. I mean, she seemed...genuinely happy to see me, until she realized that I brought Deimos with me, and then she accused me of betraying her.

Maggie: [Laughs] [Ahem] You don't blame her, do you?

Nicole: No, I... course not.

Maggie: Why did you bring him? I mean, you had to know that Chloe wouldn't be happy about it.

Nicole: Well, Deimos thought maybe she was still lying about him not being the father. And I...wasn't going to deny him again.

Maggie: So then you picked Deimos over Chloe.

Nicole: No, that's not how it was.

Maggie: Well, maybe not to you, but to Chloe it was.

Nicole: Oh, Maggie, you know, I shouldn't even have to choose, you know? I mean...it's very clear now that the baby has nothing to do with Daniel, so I just--I don't understand why Chloe's still so angry that I'm seeing him.

Maggie: See, it doesn't matter why. What's important is you find a way...for the two of you to heal. I mean, not just your friendship but... for parker. I mean, he told me that he misses you so much.

Nicole: He actually told you that?

Maggie: Yes, he did. And I'm sure you miss him too.

Nicole: Oh, so much sometimes I can't stand it.

Maggie: [Exhales] You and Chloe...ha. You have been through so very much.

Nicole: [Laughs] Oh...

[Both laughing]

Nicole: Oh, yes, we have. Love, hate...

Maggie: Yeah.

Nicole: Boyfriends...

Maggie: Yeah.

Nicole: Marriages. Pregnancy and miscarriages. We have definitely run the gamut from friends to enemies to frenemies.

Maggie: Listen. If Victor and I...could mend fences with Deimos-- and believe me, that took some doing--then you and Chloe can fix this friendship. I mean, all it would take would be for one of you picking up the phone.

Nicole: I will grow old waiting for her to call me.

Maggie: Then, it's...up to you.

[Soft music]

Deimos: Nicole just recently told me that she and Daniel froze embryos to use in future attempts at in vitro.

Brady: Okay. What are you saying, that Chloe...had herself implanted with one of those embryos, shortly after Daniel died... months later? And then just...didn't tell her best friend who happened to be the baby's mother?

Deimos: I know, I know it's a stretch, but just consider it for a moment.

Brady: I don't buy it. I'll tell you why--because I remember Chloe when she took that paternity test, she was freaked out that you might be the father.

Deimos: Yeah, right! And when she found out that I wasn't the father, what did Chloe do? She skipped town without telling Nicole or Philip why. Maybe because she figured that if I wasn't the father, the baby had to be the result of the IVF!

Brady: But shouldn't she already have known that? I mean, if this whole thing is true--and I'm not saying it is true--why wouldn't Chloe just tell Nicole at that point?

Deimos: I don't know, Brady.

Brady: Doesn't make sense.

Deimos: I don't have all the answers. But you have to admit, from the beginning, her story hasn't added up! I mean, first she said that she had only been with me and Philip. Now we know that Philip, that that was a lie, right?

Brady: Right.

Deimos: Now, conveniently, all of a sudden she says that the baby is a product of a one-night stand with some nameless guy? Give me a break!

Brady: You know what, I think that's more plausible than this half-baked fairy tale you're giving me right now.

Deimos: I'm just telling you, it doesn't make sense.

Brady: And I'm telling you, Deimos, if you acted this obsessed when you thought you were the father of Chloe's baby, hell, no wonder she got freaked out.

Deimos: Oh, my God... that's it! Of course. That's why she left town without telling Nicole the truth.

[Dramatic music]

Steve: Ah!

Kayla: [Gasps] Ugh!

Steve: I knew you wouldn't be able to resist.

Kayla: Yeah, and you can never resist giving Christmas presents early.

Steve: They don't call me patchy Claus for nothin'.

Kayla: Yeah. I think that you were more excited about the holidays than even our kids were.

Steve: Well, you know, Christmas is my favorite.

Kayla: Oh, yeah...I know. I remember that year that you gave everybody their presents a week early, and then there was nothing under the tree Christmas morning.

Steve: I promise you... there will be something extra-special under the tree this year.

Kayla: Mm-hmm.

Steve: But that gift over there... that's a seasonal one. You should open it now.

[Both laughing]

Kayla: Ooh...

Steve: [Coaxing] Come on...

Kayla: Now? Here? Yikes.

Sonny: Every Christmas, my mom would make us one thing by hand. She, uh, she would say, "it's not the gift that matters. It's the thought that goes into it." This one year, she made me a pillow with my initials on it. And to think, like all these games and toys and gadgets that I really wanted all those years... that pillow is the only thing I still have. And I would never get rid of it.

["Got Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" plays in background]

Paul: You know, when you used to talk to me about your mom, I...I always pictured this soft-spoken, refined lady.

Sonny: [Laughs] Boy, were you off-base.

Paul: [Laughs] Well, she's definitely a force to be reckoned with. Just like her son. She's lucky to have... such a devoted family. And friends. You know, they'll all be there for her...through... whatever lies ahead. And like I said, your friends'll be there for you too. Including me. Whenever you need me.

[Soft music]

Nicole: Hi, Chloe, it's me again. Look, I know things aren't good between us right now. In fact, they're awful. But I'd really like to change that. Would you please call me back?

Deimos: I can't believe I didn't see this!

Brady: See what?

Deimos: This is all about me!

Brady: Isn't everything?

Deimos: No, no! Think about it! When Chloe thought that I might be the father of the baby, she didn't want me to have anything to do with it, right? Because she despises me. That's why she hasn't told Nicole about the baby. She knows that if she tells her, Nicole and I are close enough that I would be a part of this baby's life after all.

Brady: I can't blame her for being concerned. I mean, you did just drug your nephew.

Deimos: Oh, look, could we please get over that?

Brady: Look, even if Chloe went through this in vitro again...does not explain why she wouldn't tell Nicole about it from the very beginning. I mean, you and Nicole weren't even together then.

Deimos: You know what? It doesn't matter what Chloe's motives are. There's an easy way for me to find out if I'm right.

Brady: If you're thinking about bullying Chloe into some kind of test...

Deimos: No, no, no.

Brady: Or multiple tests--

Deimos: Believe me, I have no desire to involve myself with Chloe again, all right? All I have to do is have Nicole call the clinic! Find out if all her frozen embryos are there.

Brady: No. You will not do that. As a matter of fact, that's the last thing you should do.

[Tense music]

What-- what is this?

Steve: It's our life, baby. Go on, look inside.

[Soft music]

Kayla: Our first wedding.

Steve: Yeah. I remember that day... how you took my breath away. You still do.

Kayla: You've always taken my breath away.

Steve: Isn't it amazing? No matter what tried to keep us apart...we always found our way back to each other.

Kayla: [Whispers] Yeah.

Steve: Okay. Turn to the last page.

[Soft music]

[Steve laughs]

Kayla: "Kayla Caroline Brady, M.D."

Steve: Yeah.

Kayla: "And Steven earl Johnson... invite you to join in the celebration of their love... on..."

Steve: How does a valentine's wedding day sound to you, sweetness?

Paul: You know, as much as I miss san Francisco, I always wished for a white Christmas.

Sonny: Well, you might get your wish.

["We Three Kings" plays in background]

Sonny: Where'd the whole idea of the mistletoe come from, anyway?

Paul: I don't know, probably, uh, someone's idea... or an excuse for them to get a kiss.

Derrick: Hey, you two. Just gonna grab a bite to eat. Wanna join?

Sonny: That's okay, I-- I gotta get back to work. Thank you for the walk.

Paul: Anytime.

Brady: There is nothing more in this world that Nicole wants than to be a mother. And she's had her hopes high, and they've been crushed... many, many, many times.

Deimos: Maybe that's why Chloe had the IVF again and didn't mention it to Nicole. Maybe she didn't want her disappointed if it failed.

Brady: In the same way, if you tell her what you think is true and it turns out not to be true--

Deimos: I already suggested to her that it could be a possibility. When Nicole told me about the IVF, I couldn't help but wonder if Chloe was carrying her baby. She immediately dismissed it, said it wasn't possible.

Brady: Of course, she did, because she would never believe that Chloe would go get implanted without telling her first. Since you're not sure about this and whether it's true or not, you can't say a word to Nicole. Because if you do, and it turns out not to be true, it's gonna rip her apart. I know what I'm talking about, because I'm... I was with her when she--when she lost her first baby. She carried that loss around with her for, uh...a long time. And then she got pregnant again. She lost that one too. And that one was further on in the pregnancy than the first one. So you need to know that if you're not sure about the truth of this whole thing...you can't say a damn word to her. You hear me?

Deimos: The last thing I wanna do is put Nicole through any more pain. But if this happens to be true, don't you think that we owe it to her to find out?

Brady: Why did you say "we"?

Deimos: I may need your help. Can I count on you?

Brady: Yeah. For Nicole, I will help. But there's no abductions or druggings or anything like that. And don't think I won't go to Victor about Philip if any of those things happen.

Deimos: Mm. Actually...I think I know another way to get to the truth. wedding is...two months away. We haven't planned anything.

Steve: Well, I figured we've done it before.

Kayla: I guess there's no way you'd forget this anniversary, right?

Steve: Nah. That's just an extra added bonus I took into account.

Kayla: Mm.

Steve: What do you think?

Kayla: I think this wedding is the only Christmas present I need.

[Steve laughs]

[Edgy music]

Brady: What'd you want to see me about?

Sonny: I'd appreciate if what I'm about to say...stays between us. At least for now.

Brady: Sounds serious. What is it?

Sonny: I'm sure you're as aware as I am about the opposing forces in the family? Everyone's got their own idea about titan's future and how to get us there.

Brady: That's true. We've always been in agreement about that.

Sonny: Exactly. That's why I want your take on this, 'cause I feel like you and I are always on the same page-- that business should be conducted on the up and up.

Brady: I agree. It's not always easy.

Sonny: Well, nothing worth having is easy.

Brady: No, it's not. You wanna tell me what's going on?

Sonny: Not too long ago, my dad wanted me to go look into the deal that Deimos made with Eduardo and Dario Hernandez.

Brady: Yeah, I remember hearing something about it. It's a, uh, shipping contract, right?

Sonny: It was. Just that Deimos doesn't seem to care what's being shipped by the way of titan. My dad is worried that if it's something illegal, titan is gonna be responsible for that. So that is why I hired Steve and your brother to find out what it is.

Brady: Why in the hell would you do that?

[Tense music]

Nicole: Hey.

Deimos: Hey!

Nicole: You've been gone a while.

Deimos: Yeah, you know, getting up to speed with titan is taking longer than I thought.

Nicole: Mm.

Deimos: What is it? You expecting it to ring?

Nicole: I don't wanna lie to you, Deimos, but I don't want you to be angry with me either.

Deimos: Well, why would either be necessary?

Nicole: It's about Chloe.

Deimos: What about her?

Nicole: Well, I had a really great talk with Maggie, and she made me realize how much I miss my friendship with Chloe and... she suggested that I make the first move in mending fences by calling her.

Deimos: And did you?

Nicole: Yes. But she... hasn't returned my call. And before you say that I'm wasting my time--

Deimos: No. I won't. I think Maggie's right.

Nicole: Really?

Deimos: Yeah.

Nicole: But the last time we talked, you said I should let Chloe go.

Deimos: I hated just seeing you so distraught. And I've come to learn that I should never question Maggie's wisdom.

[Both chuckle]

Deimos: And who knows, maybe you can convince Chloe to leave Chicago and come back here to Salem.

Nicole: You'd be okay with that?

Deimos: Yeah, of course. If it would make you happy, yeah.

Nicole: Yeah, I would love it! I mean, not just for her, but to see parker. But I'm--I'm--I'm... just scared.

Deimos: About what?

Nicole: That whatever made Chloe leave Salem...is what will make her stay away for good.

[Tense music]

Both: Mmm...

Steve: Oh, that's good news. For a minute there, I thought you were gonna say no.

Kayla: Are you kidding me? I love the idea of being a valentine's day bride. The sooner the better.

Steve: Yeah. The sooner the better. I don't think I can wait any longer to be married to you again.

[Uplifting music]

Brady: Why would you go behind my back to my brother and Steve about our family business?

Sonny: They won't say anything. Steve and Paul--

Brady: Paul. Is that what this is about? Is this an excuse to spend more time with Paul, Sonny, hmm?

Sonny: Are you kidding me? I would never do that. You're way outta line. You're way outta line.

Am I? You went behind my back to my brother. I'm of line? Are you sure about that?

Sonny: My father and I are trying to make sure that titan doesn't go down in flames because we looked the other way on a deal that seemed shady from the get-go. You know what? It turns out Eduardo and Dario are already smuggling in counterfeit luxury items.

Brady: That doesn't surprise me, okay? Those two guys don't have the cleanest of records.

Sonny: And that is why I hired Steve and Paul... to make sure that nothing worse is going on.

Brady: And...

Sonny: There's nothing so far.

Brady: Yeah, so what's the big deal? It's a bunch of fake designer bags and shoes. It's--it's not hurting anyone. It's not killing anyone.

Sonny: So you don't think I should go to uncle Vic and tell him that he needs to get ahold of Deimos and break this contract?

Brady: No, I don't, Sonny, and let me tell you why. 'Cause Victor's retired, number one, number two, he's trusted Deimos with most of those decisions now.

Sonny: Brady, I don't trust Deimos. I do not think he has the best interest of this family or this company.

Brady: It's no mystery that I've had my issues with the guy as well. But recently--recently... I've seen that...a lot of his decisions that he makes-- he has very good reasons for doing so.

Sonny: Are you actually defending him right now?

Brady: No, I'm not defending him--I'm saying he's not as bad as we thought he was.

Sonny: You are really angling for this new promotion, aren't you?

Brady: Oh, st--that's not what this is about.

Sonny: No?

Brady: No.

Sonny: You just changed your whole way of thinking for no reason.

Brady: Well, to me it seems that...you've changed. You've gone from "let's fortify the family's position" to pretty much staging a coup to take over titan, Sonny.

Sonny: You know damn well I would never do that.

Brady: How do I know that?

Brady: Because if I were, you would be the first person I would go to. Look, we have both been through so much lately, we shouldn't be going at each other.

Brady: I'm in agreement with you on that.

Sonny: That's good. I'm just surprised that you're not as worried as I am, considering that we both want what's best for this company.

Brady: Sonny, I do want that. I just don't think getting nuts over a bunch of fake designer handbags and shoes is worth it. It's not...killing anyone! Let it go.

Sonny: Not yet. It's not drugs...but it is illegal. If they get caught--

Brady: If you hire someone to conduct an investigation about what they're doing, Sonny, you can be sure that is the one way they will get caught.

Sonny: Brady, I am trying to spare this company...another bad exposure. Because we are still recovering from the last time we played it fast and loose with the law on the docks.

Brady: Mm...you just had to bring that up, didn't you?

Sonny: I did, because you don't get it. Kiriakis, the image, needs a major rehabbing if we're ever gonna bounce back from that.

Brady: Here's what I don't get--I don't get how exposing Eduardo and Dario as criminals is gonna help us at all. I tell you one thing, it's not gonna help you. Deimos finds out that you've gone behind his back, Sonny, you will be fired. I don't know if you want my advice. I'm gonna give it to you anyway. Tell Steve and tell Paul--drop the case. Do it now.

[Dramatic musical flourish]

[Soft music]

Deimos: Something tells me this is gonna be the best Christmas ever.

Nicole: You know, I can't help thinking how different my life was this time last year.

Deimos: Holidays and anniversaries are always difficult for people who've lost someone they love. And here you are dealing with both at the same time.

Nicole: I had another dream about Daniel earlier.

Deimos: That's been happening a lot lately.

Nicole: I know, I-I-I... I don't know why.

Deimos: Did he say anything this time?

Nicole: Just... that he'd always be with me.

Deimos: Course he'll always be with you, Nicole. In your heart.

Nicole: You know... actually, this time, I-I-- I felt a sense of peace with everything. You know, like he was giving me permission to move on. And when I woke up, I felt grateful and relieved, like now nothing--nothing can hold us back.

Deimos: Nothing can.

Kayla: Know what?

Steve: Hmm.

Kayla: I think this is your best proposal yet.

Steve: I've had a lot of practice.

[Both chuckling]

Kayla: Yep. Mmm. Oh, don't get me going.

Steve: Mmm. Look at us. There's not even any mistletoe around here.

Kayla: Who needs mistletoe?

[Mellow guitar music]

Paul: I'm really glad we did this.

Derrick: Me too.

Sonny: Thank God. I didn't know how I was gonna find you guys.

Derrick: [Softly] Lucky us.

Paul: What's up--is it your mom?

Sonny: No. Actually, um... can we talk in private real quick?

Derrick: I'll go pay the check.

Paul: So what's going on? Did you talk to Deimos about the Hernandez shipment?

Sonny: No. And I'm not going to. In fact... I need you to stop the investigation.

Paul: What? Why, what happened?

Sonny: Nothing happened. Yet. But if we keep this up, it's gonna cause problems in the family...and that's the last thing that titan needs right now.

Paul: Well, who told you this, Victor?

Sonny: No, actually, it was-- it was Brady. I told him everything that was going on, and he thought it'd be better if we didn't know if something more...nefarious was in the shipment. Look, I'll still pay you and Steve--

Paul: That's not what I'm worried about. What if there's something more that is going on? Isn't it better to be one step ahead?

Sonny: The job is done. Okay? End of story.

Sonny: Well, if that's what you really want...

Sonny: It is. All right, well, I will let you get back to your date.

[Lightly suspenseful music]

Derrick: That looked pretty serious. Not that I have a problem with it.

Paul: He just fired me.

[Soft music]

Nicole: Hello, Daniel. [Exhales] I'm...I'm doing what you asked me to do. I'm moving on. [Sniffles, exhales] [Inhales, exhales]

[Gentle music]

Nicole: [Sobs] Oh... [Sniffles] Ohh...

Deimos: Yes, this is Deimos Kiriakis. I'd like to make an appointment to meet with Dr. Lee. No. It's not for medical purposes. I'm interested in making a donation to the Brookville clinic. A very substantial donation. So please call me and let me know if Dr. Lee can see me first thing in the morning. Yes. That's my number. You got it. Thank you.
