Episode #12921 ~ Steve visits Kayla in her hospital room as she recovers from surgery; Nicole learns from Theresa that she's also on Xander's hit list; Clyde continues to torment Kate; Orpheus, Clyde, & Xander find a base of operations and agree to work together.

[Cell phone beeps]

Chad: Kate?

Kate: [Sighs] Chad. I-I saw him. Earlier today, I saw Clyde.

Chad: Did you call the police?

Kate: Yes! Yes. Hope and Rafe just left, but they--they didn't take me seriously, okay? I have--I have security coming. But listen to me. I need you to be safe. I know that Clyde is gonna blame you for what happened to Ben. Who knows what he's gonna do?

[Thud]

What was that?

Steve: Well, I'm gonna head over to the house. I won't be long.

Kayla: Take your time.

Steve: I know how you hate those hospital gowns, so I'll get you some jammies. And, you know, there were a couple books on the nightstand. Is it okay for you to read? Maybe we should check with your surgeon.

Kayla: I'm fine. Really, I am.

Steve: When you passed out, I was so afraid I was gonna lose you.

Kayla: Stop. Really. I am gonna make a full recovery. I am. I-I appreciate everything that you've done. Please. Can't you stop worrying?

Steve: Never, sweetness. You might as well tell me to stop breathing.

[Soft music]

John: When I think of all the people that were in that room that I loved, doc...

Marlena: Well, that was meant to be Brady and Theresa's wedding.

John: Yeah, Orpheus took you away from me once. If he had succeeded in doing that again--

Marlena: Oh, my darling. It would take a better man than that to get me away from you.

[Cell phone ringing]

John: It's roman. Come on, man, tell me Orpheus is behind bars. John black.

Kate: And those doors. Closed. Locked.

[Rustling]

Kate: [Sighs] I'm not staying here alone.

[Dramatic crescendo]

Clyde: You looking for these, darling?

Theresa: What do you think they're going to want me to do?

Brady: Probably read over the typed version of your statement, see if you've left anything out.

Theresa: [Sighs] Well, I might've. I mean it's kind of hard to remember the details of being strangled. I thought I was dying, Brady, and all I could remember is seeing Tate's sweet little face. And I saw yours too. I just--I thought we were never gonna be together again.

Brady: Shh. I'm sorry.

[Faint laughter]

Both: Hey!

Nicole: Look, mommy and daddy.

Brady: He looks great. He looks great.

Nicole: He is. He's fine. He's the best baby on the planet, huh? Ahh!

Theresa: I'm so glad he was with you when Xander got to me.

Nicole: Yeah. I'm glad too. How are you guys?

Brady: Mm.

Nicole: Oh, Theresa.

Brady: Yeah.

Nicole: I can see the marks on your neck.

Theresa: I'm okay. I'm still a little shaky. I mean, you know, Xander's still out there, and I just-- I don't think he's done with me.

Nicole: I know how you feel.

Brady: Now, stop. Listen, you two--both of you-- you're gonna be protected from now on.

Theresa: I don't know, Brady. You know, he's out for blood, okay? He's not playing games.

Kate: Get out, Clyde, before I call the cops.

Clyde: Now, that's no way to welcome an old friend. It's been so long. I just wanted to do a little catching up.

Kate: Not long enough.

Clyde: Sweetheart, you move, you're a dead woman. You hear me? A dead woman.

Kate: Why are you here? What do you want from me?

Clyde: I thought a lot about you while I was away, Kate.

Kate: This is your idea of a reconciliation? I would've preferred flowers and champagne, thank you.

Clyde: Oh, no. I am not here to get you back. All the thinking I was doing, that was about how you acted when you broke it off-- all high and mighty, disrespectful. Yeah. It really burns me to remember some of the things you said. I really wanted the two of us to run this town, Kate. It's too bad you're not the woman I thought you were.

Kate: Hmm. Well, you're not the man I thought you were either. You know, when Jordan told me about you beating her and Ben when they were kids, I accused her of lying to go after you.

Clyde: That's all it was is lies.

Kate: No, that's not what it was. That's what you said. Makes me sick that I bought it. I should've known better, because I was with someone like that who did the same thing to my kids. How does that make you feel, Clyde? To use a belt on a kid who can't fight back? Like a real man?

Clyde: That's enough.

Kayla: I don't know what to say.

Steve: Well, maybe I'm being a little overprotective. I'm sorry.

Kayla: Well, even if you can't stop yourself, I am surrounded by people in this hospital who are professionals, and they-- they all know me.

Steve: I thought I was gonna lose you.

Kayla: I'm right here.

[Soft music]

Steve: Hey. Do you remember what you said when you first woke up after the surgery? You said you were glad the first thing you saw was Joe's face and mine. You remember that?

Kayla: I remember.

Steve: Ever heard the saying "in vino veritas"?

Kayla: Of course I have.

Steve: Well, you were still a little dopey from the anesthesia when you said that, so it must've been the truth.

You think that's a good sign for us?

John: So if anything changes, you're gonna let me know, right? Yeah, thanks.

[Cell phone beeps]

Marlena: Well, I guess from the look on your face, they haven't found Orpheus yet.

John: Oh, it's worse than that, doc. He's totally disappeared. They've lost him.

[Dramatic music]

Orpheus: How does it feel to watch the only woman you love shot down before your eyes? I can tell you what it's like. I've relived that moment a thousand times. Every night, I dream about the instant I watched my wife drop to the ground dead.

John: Wait a minute. She's not--

Orpheus: No. I shot her with a tranquilizer. I don't want her dead... yet. I wanted you to experience-- experience the terror that I felt that night seven years ago. I wanted you to have a taste of the pain that I have lived with every day.

Hold it! Try to move her, and I swear to you I will kill her. Who says you can't go home again?

Theresa: This was supposed to be our wedding reception. Thought we'd be toasting champagne by now.

Brady: Honey, I'm sorry.

Theresa: It's not your fault.

Brady: You keep checking the door, don't you?

Theresa: I just keep expecting Xander to be walking in.

Brady: Okay, well, listen, why don't we--why don't we pack up this food and we'll take it to go, all right?

Nicole: Yeah, sure, we can finish at your place or something.

Brady: It's fine.

Theresa: Thanks, but I can't let him get to me.

Nicole: Honey, listen. Xander knows if the cops catch up to him that he will be thrown back in the slammer for a very long time, okay? I'm sure he took off.

Deimos: I wouldn't count on that.

Nicole: Hi, I didn't see you come in.

Deimos: Do you guys mind if I join you?

Brady: Go ahead.

Deimos: So Victor tells me you two had quite the day.

Brady: Wasn't the wedding we had hoped for.

Theresa: There wasn't a wedding at all.

Brady: And Orpheus and Xander, they were definitely not on the guest list.

Deimos: Well, at least no one was seriously injured, right?

Brady: She could've been killed. I understand you used to visit Xander in prison.

Deimos: Once. I went once.

Brady: He's your nephew. You close to him?

Deimos: If you're wondering if I had anything to do with his escape-- absolutely not. One visit with him and I was convinced that he was exactly where he needed to be.

Theresa: Yeah, well, you'd better be telling the truth, 'cause I'm not the only one he's after.

Deimos: I'm gonna take care of you.

Nicole: [Mouthing words]

Deimos: And you two. And the baby.

Brady: What are you talking about?

Deimos: I'm gonna keep my family safe, no matter what I have to do. And you three are family.

[Soft dramatic music]

Kayla: I don't think now is the time for us to be making big decisions about our future together.

Steve: [Sighs] Okay. I'm not trying to worm out of seeing that psychiatrist I told you about, if that's what you're thinking.

Kayla: Why don't we just take it one step at a time?

Steve: One step at a time?

Kayla: Mm-hmm.

Steve: Sweetness, I don't know if we have that kind of time anymore. When I came tearing into this hospital with you in my arms, not sure if you would make it, my priorities came really clear. I made a deal with the big dude upstairs. I told him that if he'd let you live, I would spend the rest of my life trying to be the best husband I could to you.

Kayla: What's that-- breakfast in bed every morning?

Steve: Okay.

Kayla: [Chuckles]

Steve: As long as you're the first thing I see when I open my eyes every morning and the last thing I see before I close 'em. I love you and our kids. You're all I live for.

Kayla: I love you too.

Steve: I needed to hear that.

Kayla: It's just, I've been burned. And my scars haven't healed.

Steve: I get that. So just tell me-- what do you need from me?

Kayla: I just need to know-- I need to be sure it's gonna work before I recommit to you.

Steve: I understand. If you need me to back off until you're sure, I'll respect your wishes. But you watch me. I'm gonna prove to you that there's nothing I want in this world more than to be with you. You just watch me.

Marlena: How could roman lose him?

John: Well, that's my fault.

Marlena: What?

John: All those years ago, I left him for dead and he wasn't. I remember the only thing I was thinking about was gettin' to that plane that was taking you away from me. Hell, I even failed at that.

Marlena: There's nothing you could've done about that.

John: We lost so many years. Never again. I swear to you, I'm gonna find this guy and I'm gonna make him finish paying for all the hell that he put us through, doc.

Marlena: Honey, honey, honey.

John: I'm so sorry.

Marlena: Mm.

John: I'm so sorry.

Marlena: Steve's here.

John: Hey, partner.

Steve: Hey. How you doin'?

Marlena: How is she?

Steve: Oh, she's good. She is awake and complaining about hospital food, so I'm on my way to the pub to get her some chowder.

Marlena: I'd like to see her.

Steve: Oh, she'd like that. Go ahead.

Marlena: Okay, thanks.

John: Yeah.

Steve: What's up? What happened?

John: Ah, it's just a flesh wound from a .45.

Steve: Whose .45?

John: Ah, partner, you're not even gonna believe this. Compliments of Orpheus. He's back.

[Dramatic music]

Steve: That's not possible.

John: Yeah, man. Turns out he was alive and well, hanging out in a federal prison till he broke out.

Steve: And headed straight to Salem?

John: Showed up at what was supposed to be Brady's wedding with a little present, a gun.

Steve: Tell me he's back in custody.

John: Hell no, man. He's on the run.

Steve: Are you kidding me?

John: And he made it clear that he is after everything you and I value most in life.

Steve: Marlena and Kayla, for starters.

Clyde: Now, you just watch that smart mouth of yours. Nobody talks to me like that.

Kate: Clyde. You don't want to risk getting caught just to get back at me. There's nothing here for you in this town.

Clyde: Ben's son is in this town.

Kate: Thomas is Chad's son, not--not Ben's.

Clyde: Well, there was a paternity test that said Ben was the daddy.

Kate: I know. They did a DNA test after he was born. It proved that the paternity test was wrong.

Clyde: Like I don't know that? I'm the guy that told the lab tech to say it was Ben.

Kate: Clyde, what do you want with that baby?

Clyde: Ben still thinks of that boy as his son, and he is the son that he would've had with Abigail, but Chad stole all that away from him. After I'm finished with you, I'm going to get my grandson, and I'm gonna take him out of Salem for good.

Steve: John, Kayla can't find out about this.

John: Hell, doc's probably telling her about it right now.

Steve: Why weren't we informed that this maniac was alive and in prison in this country?

John: He was going by an alias-- Milo harp. Looks like the feds bought it.

Steve: Kayla just had surgery. If Orpheus gets anywhere near her, I'm not sure she's gonna be able to handle it in her condition.

Kayla: You're telling me there are three psychopaths loose in this town? I have to get to Joey.

Marlena: No, no--Steve will take care of Joey. What are you doing?

Kayla: No, I need to go. No.

Marlena: What are you doing?

Kayla: This hospital could be in a crisis situation any second, and I am the chief of staff here.

Marlena: Dr. Winters is taking your place. She will handle everything.

Kayla: Well, I need to fill her in, then. She needs to be briefed.

Marlena: No, you don't. I can fill her in. I know more about the situation than you do, and she will take precautions, and they might not even be necessary.

Kayla: I need to be in on that meeting.

Marlena: The hell you do.

Kayla: Marlena, come on. Please just get me a robe.

Marlena: No, no, not "come on." No, no, no.

Brady: He's asleep. I'm gonna--I'm gonna pay the bill, okay?

[Glass shatters]

Theresa: [Gasps] Oh, my God, he's here.

Nicole: No, no, no, no. Honey, honey, it's okay. Someone just broke dishes and glass in the kitchen.

Brady: It's okay. I'm gonna get you home right now.

Theresa: No, I don't want to go home. Xander could be waiting for us.

Brady: Honey, honey, listen to me. Xander is not gonna be there, okay? I have a security team around the entire complex.

Deimos: There are 20 or 30 town houses in that development. Your team can actually vet each person coming in and out?

Theresa: He's right, Brady.

Brady: Well, thank you for that; I appreciate it.

Deimos: I'm just concerned that Xander could slip by your team.

Brady: Are you trying to scare the hell out of her? What are you--

Deimos: No. I'm trying to get you to move in with me.

[Suspenseful music]

Steve: Yes. Yes, Joe, it is that serious. Okay. Look, I'm gonna come home soon and get some things for your mom. No, no, she's doing fine. She's--she's really good. Okay. I love you, buddy.

[Cell phone beeps]

Steve: You think I should call Stephanie?

John: Nah, these guys are in Salem.

Steve: Yeah, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I am gonna get a guard outside Kayla's door 24-7. Then I'm gonna call her doctor and make sure that he keeps her in here longer than he said.

Kayla: Take me back to bed.

Marlena: Yes, of course. Right away.

[Cell phone beeps]

Steve: Yeah, could you page Dr. Powers, please? Uh, wait, cancel that. What?

John: Well, before you start making all these arrangements, don't you think you ought to discuss them with Kayla first?

Steve: Why? How can she fight me on this?

John: Come on, man, you're trying to win her back. I don't think this is the time to start going all macho and making her decisions for her. Man, she hates that. You know I'm right.

Kayla: You know, I'm-- I'm gonna kill him. I'm gonna kill him.

Marlena: No, honey, he's just scared. Same as john. He's been following me around ever since this whole thing happened.

Kayla: Yeah, well, john's not making unilateral decisions for you. Call my surgeon, tell him to lie to me. I mean, who the hell does he think he is? You know, it's just vintage Steve. He just thinks, "oh, I got to take care of the little woman." You know, he just drives me nuts.

Steve: Oh, sorry to interrupt.

Marlena: I'm just filling Kayla in on what's happening with Orpheus.

Steve: Yeah, john just filled me in.

Marlena: John, hmm? John's here. I'm not surprised. I'll leave you two alone.

[Dramatic music]

Steve: [Sighs] Looks like we need to talk.

Kayla: Yeah, we need to talk.

Brady: I'm not moving into that house. No.

Theresa: Brady, come on. Can't we even think about it? It's a fortress.

Brady: Yeah, and it's a fortress that Xander knows all too well.

Deimos: I've already upped security. And all the security guards are veterans of the Kiriakis organization. I put that in place to protect Maggie and Victor. And besides, I spoke to Victor about this, and he agrees you're not safe in that town house.

Brady: Deimos, Victor has been trying to get me to move back under that roof since I walked out. The question is, is he gonna let her move in with me and our son? Or is he gonna let her fend for herself?

Deimos: Oh, Brady, come on. He knows the three of you have to be together. And besides, this is only temporary, all right? Once Xander and the others are caught, you can do whatever you want.

Brady: Look. Xander attacked you. This is your call.

Theresa: I... [Sighs] I don't hate the idea. I mean, I can deal with Victor, and--and if I can't, then Tate and I will just have our meals in our room together, you know? And... look, Brady, I just-- I think--I just want to keep Tate safe, okay? And I think that we're safer with Deimos. Please?

Brady: Okay. Okay, we'll move in tonight.

Deimos: You're making the right decision.

[Tate crying]

Theresa: Oh, hey, I think I-- I think I need to go change his diaper, so...

Brady: Here, I'll take you.

Theresa: Thank you.

[Tate crying]

Deimos: Looks like you're the last person that needs convincing. If Theresa can live with Victor, can't you? Besides, I'll be there too.

Nicole: No. No dice.

Kate: Think about what you're saying. Ben killed four people, including my grandson. There's no turning it around, especially not with Chad's son.

Clyde: Chad doesn't deserve to raise that kid. Him and that slut Abigail, they're the reason that Ben did what he did.

Kate: No, no! No! It's you! You made him do it, you crazy son of a bitch. It's you-- [Groans]

Clyde: I told you to watch your mouth.

Kate: No.

Clyde: I'm done here. So are you.

Chad: Aah!

[Intense music]

[Gunshot]

Chad: Talk.

Steve: All right. After john filled me in on everything, I started making plans.

Kate: Making plans?

Steve: I was gonna talk to your doctor and try to convince him to keep you in here longer than you needed to be. And I-I thought you needed to be protected--and you do. That's what I came up with.

Kayla: You were going to call him?

Steve: I didn't. I didn't call him. I still think you need to be protected, but I realized that you should have a say in how we do that.

Kayla: Wow.

Steve: [Laughs] Yeah, wow.

Deimos: I think I get it.

Nicole: Oh, yeah?

Deimos: Mm-hmm. You're afraid of becoming dependent on me. Are you seriously more afraid of that than you are of Xander?

Nicole: First of all, I'm not afraid of you. And second of all, here's the deal. I want to take whatever this is slowly.

Deimos: All right. How slowly are we talking?

Nicole: At a snail's pace. And moving in with you isn't my definition of slow.

[Both grunting and groaning]

[Intense music]

Clyde: You little bastard. We're not done.

Kate: Did you see where the gun went?

Chad: Yeah, in between being punched, it's...

Kate: Are you okay? Are you all right?

Chad: Yeah, you?

Kate: Yeah. When I asked you not to come over-- thank you for ignoring that.

Chad: My pleasure.

Kate: You had a lot of guts rushing in here unarmed.

Chad: Yeah, it's kind of my thing.

Kate: Okay. How long were you listening?

Chad: Long enough to hear that he wants my son. Can I have a phone?

[Cell phone beeps]

Chad: What are you doing right now? No, Kate's fine. I'm with her right now. No, just-- you and Adrienne stay there with Thomas and make sure he's safe. Yeah, I called the cops as soon as Clyde left. No, I'm gonna--I'm gonna-- I'm gonna alert security. Just stay tight. And, Lucas, thank you. I appreciate your help.

[Suspenseful music]

Kate: I heard your conversation. Thanks for not telling Lucas that the man he warned me against countless times just tried to kill me. And thanks for saving my life again.

Chad: Don't mention it.

Kate: I can't believe myself. "Don't bother coming over. I'll be fine."

Chad: Well, there's a reason I don't do what you tell me to.

Kate: [Sighs] I'm not gonna forget what you did.

Chad: You've helped me out plenty of times.

Kate: Have I?

Chad: When my mother passed away. My father.

Kate: I felt like I owed that to her, you know? We both went through a lot together.

Chad: Yeah. Well, there's, um, the company. Andre.

Kate: Yeah. I looked out for you in my own way.

Chad: So you're not gonna start telling me what to do like the rest of the DiMeras, are you?

Kate: You know, in light of the fact that you just saved my life, I guess I will just let that comment slide.

Chad: Right. Do you want me to stay till the police get here?

Kate: No. No, I want you to go back with Thomas. Keep him safe.

[Siren wailing]

Kate: I'll be fine. I won't open the door unless the cops are here.

Chad: That sounds like them.

Kate: Love you, baby.

Chad: Love you. [Grunts]

[Siren wailing]

Kayla: Joey, I am so glad you're gonna stay at your uncle Roman's. Look, there are three really bad guys who've escaped from prison out, and I-I just--you know, I just want you to be careful and stay safe, all right? Okay, baby. All right, listen, your pop wants to talk to you. Okay, I love you.

Steve: Hey, buddy. You call me the minute you get to uncle roman's, all right? Okay. Yeah, she does sound good, doesn't she?

Kayla: [Chuckles]

Steve: Okay. You stay sharp. You know what I mean. Right. [Sighs] So what's next?

Kayla: Actually, you know, Dr. Winters is covering for me. Do you think you could-- you could find her and fill her in on the situation?

Steve: Sure.

Kayla: You know, maybe ask her to come see me. That would be better than me going to find her.

Steve: I agree. So anything else?

Kayla: Yeah, you know, I-I might be released from here as early as tomorrow, and... well, I was thinking maybe when I go home, you could, um, come with me.

Steve: Well, I'm gonna take you home, sure.

Kayla: No, I mean stay with me.

Steve: Yeah?

Kayla: Yeah. I mean, the threat is to both of us, so it'd be safer if we were there together.

Steve: Are you saying you want me to move back home with you?

Kayla: Temporarily, yeah. I mean, if that's okay with you.

Steve: That's definitely okay with me.

[Soft music]

Nicole: Theresa and Brady are taking a long time.

Deimos: Why? Do you think he's talking her into going back home?

Nicole: More likely she's trying to convince him that you're not full of it.

Deimos: So is that what you think?

Nicole: I'll decide after you tell me how you feel about taking things slow.

Deimos: I can go slow. But that doesn't mean that I'm not worried with you being by yourself, with these lunatics running around town. So how about a compromise?

Nicole: What are the terms?

Deimos: You don't have to move in, but let me hire security 24 hours a day to watch you, all right, until they're back in prison.

Nicole: Fine.

Deimos: Wow. That was easier than expected.

Nicole: Well, I'm tough, but you'd have to be an idiot not to be scared of Xander.

Brady: Okay. We're gonna go back to the town house, get what we need for Tate, and I'll call you when we're ready to leave for the mansion.

Deimos: I'm gonna go with you to your place. Then we'll go back to my house.

Brady: Fine, what about Nicole?

Deimos: I've got security waiting to take her home.

Nicole: So much for a compromise.

Deimos: What can I say? I don't like taking chances. You make sure that you text me when you go to sleep and the moment you get up in the morning.

Nicole: Yes, boss.

Deimos: All right. You all set?

Brady: Sure.

Theresa: Yeah, I know I am. Hey, please, please take care of yourself.

Nicole: I will. I'll call you guys tomorrow.

Theresa: Okay. All right.

Nicole: Bye.

[Cell phone ringing]

Nicole: No caller ID? I don't like that. Who's this?

Xander: Hi, baby. Remember me?

Nicole: I said who's this?

Xander: Don't play games. You know exactly who this is. Can't wait to see you again. We have so much to talk about. Those fries on Theresa's plate look good.

[Suspenseful music]

[Phone beeps]

Nicole: Oh, my God. [Yelling]

Xander: You weak, stupid little bitch!

Nicole: Oh! Why are you doing this? What are you and Serena up to? Tell me.

Xander: I could tell you, but I don't think you'll live long enough to hear the end.

Clyde: Jeez, this place is a dump.

Xander: Why don't you check into a five-star hotel?

Orpheus: This place is perfect. Hasn't been used in years. It's near the pier.

Clyde: Like the cops don't know that?

Orpheus: I scouted it out. We'll be fine here for now. What happened with you and Kate Roberts?

Clyde: It did not go the way I expected.

Orpheus: Same with you, huh? I suppose showing up at the Kiriakis mansion just before a wedding was a bit hasty on my part.

Xander: You think?

Orpheus: I winged john black, didn't I? [Sighs] They know we're here now. And they're scared. But we're not giving up.

Clyde: I know I'm not.

Xander: Me neither.

Orpheus: So, gentlemen, I suggest we work as a team from now on. And together, we can make life a living hell for the good people of Salem.
