Brady: Hi.

Theresa: Welcome home.

Brady: Thank you.

Theresa: Mmm.

Brady: I just, uh-- I just came back really quickly to shower and change. I have to get back to the hospital. How are you? How is everything here?

Theresa: Well, Tate's down for a nap, and, um, you know, I tried to get some work done, but I can't concentrate. Listen. How are-- how are Victor and Maggie, huh?

Brady: Victor's still unconscious.

Theresa: Oh, no.

Brady: He's lucky... he's lucky to be alive, Theresa. And when he comes to, there's no guarantee what his condition will be. That's what Fynn told me.

Theresa: Oh, my God. How's Maggie doing?

Brady: She's getting ready to go into surgery.

Theresa: Brady, I'm so scared for her. I mean, she already lost Daniel. What is she gonna do if she loses Victor too?

[Machine beeping]

Nicole: I hope you like these.

Maggie: You can bring me ragweed, and I'd like it. You know, if it weren't for you, Victor might not be alive right now.

Nicole: I left my tablet at your house. I just happened to go back for it.

Maggie: Thank goodness. Thank you for being able to overlook the way Victor treats you.

Nicole: Oh... all I could think about was how much Daniel loved him.

[Melancholy piano music]

How are you doing? I know your surgery is scheduled for today.

Maggie: Apparently, um... the damage to my spine is what they call an incomplete injury, and there's, um, a chance that the surgery could give me back the ability to walk.

Nicole: A chance?

Maggie: Mm. All I can think about is Victor. [Chuckles] It's making me crazy that I can't be with him.

Nicole: [Chuckles] I can understand.

Maggie: Do you think you could get me in to see him?

Nicole: Oh, I-I-- I don't know, Maggie.

Maggie: Could you try? Or... could you just tell him that you've seen me and I'm okay and I love him?

[Machine beeping]

[Gentle piano music]

Nicole: I have an idea.

Maggie: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: Tell him yourself.

Joey: [Sighs] I got to get to the courthouse.

Jade: Wait.

Joey: What?

Jade: [Sighs] Joey, what you're thinking about doing, it's not a good idea.

Joey: I'm not gonna say anything, unless they find my dad guilty.

Jade: Joey, wait.

[Door thuds closed]

Justin: I'm having a hard time believing the head of the ISA would have any interest in Steve's case.

Pamela: Trust me. We're very interested.

Justin: Well, you're a little too late. The trial starts in five minutes.

Pamela: There isn't going to be a trial.

Justin: Judge Covelli will be interested to hear that.

Pamela: He already has. I've spoken to him, and he's wiped Mr. Johnson's trial from his slate.

Justin: He can't do that.

Pamela: Nonetheless, he has.

Justin: Under whose authority?

John: Under hers.

Pamela: And the attorney general of the state.

[Tense music]

Justin: What the hell?

Pamela: Mr. Johnson has been working undercover for the ISA for some time. His latest assignment was to eliminate someone whose criminal activities were a major security threat. Her name was Ava Vitali.

Justin: So you're telling me that Steve was just following orders?

Pamela: Exactly. His assignment was sanctioned by the highest levels of government, which is why Mr. Johnson has been granted full immunity from any charges relating to ms. Vitali's death.

Justin: The last I looked, this was the united states of America. We don't order the assassination of our citizens, even people like Ava Vitali, who was nothing more than a spoiled, deranged woman with an unhealthy obsession for Steve. What threat is that to national security?

Pamela: That's classified information.

Justin: What took you so long to intervene? Steve was arrested weeks ago.

Well, the ISA was hoping this case wouldn't come to trial. We were trying to keep a low profile. When that didn't work out, it was agreed we had to step in and protect our agent.

Justin: Did you know about this? Did Steve mention anything about working undercover?

Belle: You know as well as I do that attorney-client privilege forbids me from answering that.

Justin: [Sighs] If anyone wants me, I'll be in judge Corelli's chambers.

Belle: I think I should be there as well.

Justin: Do not leave this room until I get back.

[Tense music]

Roman: Well, ms. Vandamm, welcome to Salem. Looks like you made it here just under the wire. Listen. I got some calls to make. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves.

Steve: One of you want to tell me what the hell just happened here?

Theresa: Come on.

Brady: Mm.

Theresa: You were at the hospital all night last night. Did you get any sleep at all?

Brady: Um, they let me sack out in an empty room. I got a couple hours.

Theresa: Okay, and what about your immunosuppressants?

Brady: I'll take them when I shower.

Theresa: What, Brady? You're supposed to take them at the same time every day.

Brady: Theresa, doctors only say that to cover their asses.

Theresa: Oh, yeah, and you know so much better than them, Mr. Heart transplant recipient?

Brady: Hey, give me your hand. Listen. Listen to that. See? Slow, steady. I'm good.

Theresa: Okay. 'Cause you know you promised to make an honest woman out of me, and I intend to make you keep that promise.

Brady: I promise. I promise. I'm sorry. Listen. I just, um... I had to be there last night.

Theresa: No, yeah, I know. I know.

[Bang at door]

Brady: Wow. What are you doing here?

Philip: What do you think? I want to find out how my father is.

[Machine beeping]

Nicole: I got it.

Maggie: [Chuckles]

Nicole: If I can talk someone into letting me into Victor's room, I'll play it for him.

Maggie: You're really good with that phone.

Nicole: Well, when I was a-- a reporter, I could file a story on this baby if I had to. [Laughs] So, uh, when are they coming to get you for surgery?

Maggie: I'm supposed to be there now, so I guess they're running late in the or.

Nicole: Um, well, do--do you want me to stay here with you until they come get you?

Maggie: No. I'm--I'm fine.

Nicole: Yeah, right.

Maggie: I sent hope and Jennifer home. And I talked to, uh-- uh, I talked Melissa, Sarah, and Melanie out of coming here. It's times like--like this that, mm... it's stressful having people hovering.

Nicole: Yeah, yeah, of course. I got it. All right, well, if I-- if I get into Victor's room, I will report back. Okay?

Maggie: Thank you again.

Nicole: [Whispers] Yeah. [Sniffles] Maggie, um... [Sniffles] I-I have something that you might want to hang on to. [Sniffles] You know, I find-- I find it comforting. [Sniffles] [Sighs and sniffles] Oh, I love this shot of him. [Chuckles and sniffles]

[Tender music]

Maggie: [Sobs] Look at that smile.

[Both laugh]

Maggie: [Sobs] Are you sure you're ready to part with this?

Nicole: Well, after your surgery, you can walk to my place and give it back to me.

[Both laugh]

Maggie: Deal.

Nicole: Yeah.

Maggie: [Sobs] I'll take extra good care of it.

Nicole: I know, Maggie.

Maggie: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: [Whispers] I know.

Maggie: [Whispers] Thank you.

Nicole: Okay.

Maggie: Okay.

Nicole: Okay. I'll see you later.

Maggie: Okay.

Ooh. Mm, oh, Daniel, you are still my son. I need you. [Moans]

Nicole: Summer. Hi.

Summer: Is Maggie already in surgery?

Nicole: No. She said they're behind in the OR.

Summer: Good. Okay.

Nicole: She also said she doesn't want people hovering.

Summer: Okay, so I won't do that.

Nicole: Summer... [Clears throat] Maggie is having spinal surgery today, and she is scared to death about Victor, so can you just not do anything to make it worse, okay?

Summer: She's my mother, and I want to see her.

[Tense music]

Steve: You have no idea how much this means to me.

Pamela: This is what we do for each other.

Steve: You do know I wasn't currently working for the ISA?

Pamela: Once an agent, always an agent.

[Dramatic music]

Justin: So... you'll be happy to hear the judge confirmed what you said.

Roman: Steve, that means you're free to go.

Justin: There are still some procedures that need to be followed--

Roman: As far as the police department is concerned, this case is closed.

Summer: I hope it's okay that I came back. I don't want to bother you or upset you.

Maggie: It's all right.

Summer: Truth is, I don't even know why I'm here. I hate hospitals, and I suck at situations like this. But you already know that. [Chuckles] I was such a rock, wasn't I, when you realized you couldn't move your legs.

Maggie: [Sighs] They, uh... they say there's a chance that they can repair... the damaged spinal cord.

Summer: That's really great.

[Machine beeping] And, uh, how's Mr. Kiriakis?

Maggie: The same.

Summer: I'm so sorry.

Maggie: Thank you.

Summer: Do you remember I told you when I was growing up my parents, they were really religious? Went to church on Sundays, Wednesday night meetings. You know, I even had perfect attendance at Sunday school for, like, 12 years. I thought it was boring. It went right over my head. But since this happened to you, I have been praying harder than I have my whole life. And if you can walk again, maybe I will start being a believer.

[Melancholy music]

Maggie: [Sobbing]

Summer: I told Nicole that I wouldn't upset you, and I did it anyway.

Maggie: No, um... you didn't upset me. It's just... I could feel that you really care about me, and I don't deserve it.

Summer: What happened to me, it was not your fault. They told you I was born dead. At least, we've got another chance, right?

Maggie: I'm not sure I deserve that either.

Summer: Why? Why would you say something like that?

Belle: Well, I don't know what just happened here any more than Justin does, but I assume you had a lot to do with it.

John: Well, sweetheart--

Belle: Uh-uh, not another word. The less I know, the better. But I am very happy for you.

Steve: Well, we really appreciate everything you did for us.

Kayla: Thank you.

Steve: You're a really good lawyer, and I'm just sorry you didn't get a chance to show that in a courtroom.

Belle: Oh, well, I don't regret it at all. Now that it's over, I can tell you we didn't have a snowball's chance in hell.

John: [Chuckles]

Belle: I should get going. [Chuckles]

John: Yeah, I'm with you.

Steve: Thanks again, partner.

Kayla: [Chuckles]

Steve: I can't believe it's over. We can go home now.

Kayla: Yeah.

Steve: You okay?

Kayla: Let's get out of here, and we can, um--we can talk about it at home.

[Footsteps tapping]

Kayla: Joey, what are you doing?

Joey: Hey, I went to the courthouse, but no one was there, so I came here.

Kayla: [Sighs]

Joey: Uncle roman says it's all over. How did it happen?

Steve: Doesn't matter how it happened. What's important is that it is over. So let's go home.

Roman: Hey. [Sighs] You just dodged a major bullet.

Steve: Believe me. I know that. And thank you for whatever your part was in this.

Kayla: Thank you, roman.

Roman: Don't make me regret it.

Jade: Congratulations, Mr. Johnson. This is awesome, even though I was kind of looking forward to seeing my first murder trial. By the way, you rock the eye patch.

Steve: And who are you?

Kayla: Uh, Joey can fill you in on the way home. Let's get out of here. I'm sick of this place.

Steve: Let's go.

[Tense music]

Joey: [Chuckles]

Brady: Come in.

Philip: So how is he?

Theresa: Hey, why don't you go to the hospital and find out yourself?

Philip: Uh, hospitals don't like to tell you much, and I'm the last person my father wants to see.

Brady: You're not gonna have to worry about him seeing you. He hasn't regained consciousness.

[Tate crying]

Theresa: I'm gonna-- I'm gonna go check on Tate.

[Tate crying]

Philip: All right, is father gonna recover from this?

Brady: Philip, I don't know. I hope so. I mean, if Nicole hadn't stumbled in on him, he-- he could be dead right now.

Philip: That's all you know?

Brady: I also happen to know that your old pal uncle Deimos and your mother were in bed in that mansion when it was happening.

Philip: My mother... and him?

Brady: There's no accounting for taste, is there?

Philip: What the hell was Deimos doing in my father's house?

Brady: I think you and I can both guess the answer to that one. Hey!

Summer: Why would you say you don't deserve another chance with me? You got screwed over as badly as I did after I was born.

[Knock at door]

It's time to take you to the or, ms. Kiriakis.

Summer: You take good care of her, okay? A lot of people love this lady.

I know.

Maggie: [Sobs]

Summer: They are going to fix you up, and I will be right here waiting for you when they bring you back.

[Somber music]

[Foreboding music]

Deimos: [Sighs] It's unbelievable. She's her double. Hmm.

[Tense music]

Hmm. "Former on-air reporter for Titan TV." Hmm, that's impressive. "Recently left basic black with designer Theresa Donovan to start their own clothing line called DJ wear." Huh. [Chuckles] "Married to Trent Robbins, Lucas Roberts... Victor Kiriakis"?

Well, well, well. What do you know?

[Machine beeping]

Nicole: Come on, you old bastard. Don't give up now. At the moment, people think I'm a hero. If you croak, I go back to being whatever I am now. To tell you the truth, I thought I'd be the one to give you a heart attack, not save your life. But you just never know, do you? [Chuckles] Well, you'll be relieved to know that I'm not here to bug you. [Chuckles] I have a message... an important message.

[Light instrumental music]

[Whispers] Okay.

Maggie: Hi, sweetheart. It's me. Don't leave me now, all right? It took us so long to find each other and to realize that we loved each other, so please don't let that end. You're not just the love of my life; you're the fun in my life. So I'll make a deal with you. You fight your way back, and I'll beat whatever is wrong with my legs. I want to dance with you again. I want to feel my arms around you. And I want to--I want you to make me laugh again. So please get well, Victor. [Sniffles] I love you so much.

[Blows kiss]

[Sobbing]

[Somber music]

Nicole: Well, at least, I kept my promise.

[Machine beeping]

Victor: Maggie.

[Light instrumental music]

Philip: Will you keep me posted on father's progress?

Brady: Sure. But you need to promise me something-- that if he makes it through this, you're gonna do everything you can to make things right with him.

Philip: Why?

Brady: Because, Philip, he needs to know that his family is behind him. He doesn't need to have separate battles between you and his brother. His heart can't handle it.

Philip: I'll think about it.

[Door clicks and rattles]

Brady: How is our boy?

Theresa: Oh, he's fine. I changed him, and Emma's giving him a bottle now. Listen. What happened with Philip?

Brady: Something happened between him and my grandfather, and he won't tell me what it is.

Theresa: Okay, well, when Victor regains consciousness, can't they just work it out?

Brady: That's exactly what I asked him to do. I just feel like he's brushing me off. I don't know. Something tells me that this whole thing is gonna go from bad to worse.

Victor: Maggie.

Nicole: No, Victor, it's--it's Nicole. I'll go get your doctor.

Victor: No. How is she?

Nicole: You heard her message? She's fine. The surgeon thinks the damage to her spine can be repaired. He's hopeful she'll walk again.

Victor: Deimos, you bastard.

Nicole: I met him-- Deimos--after the paramedics came for you.

Victor: I thought I was a goner. And then you came.

Nicole: That's right. You're lucky. I'm gonna go get your doctor.

Victor: No. You saved my life. That can't be right.

Nicole: [Sighs] It's as hard for me to believe as it is for you, but... [Chuckles] It happened.

Victor: Thank you.

Nicole: No problem. This Deimos, he said he was your brother.

Victor: It's true.

Nicole: Well, he sure didn't act like it when found out the shape you were in.

Victor: He hates me. Feeling is mutual.

Nicole: Well, I don't know what I did to him, because the way he was looking at me, it really creeped me out.

Victor: Stay away from him. He will come to you now that he's seen you.

Nicole: How do you know that? Victor, what do you mean?

Steve: [Sighs] I didn't realize your mom was gonna go to so much trouble to get us something to eat.

Joey: [Sighs] Yeah, I could, uh-- I could go help her.

Steve: Hey, maybe, uh, your friend has someplace else she needs to be.

Jade: [Chuckles] Are you kidding? And miss the Victory celebration?

Kayla: Well, there's not gonna be any paper hats or noisemakers. I can tell you that.

Steve: Joe, uh, why don't you and I grab a couple of sandwiches and take a walk? Okay, we can talk.

Joey: Dad, you don't have to do this. Jade already knows.

Steve: Knows what?

Jade: That he smothered that woman Ava with a pillow.

Steve: Are you kidding me?

Joey: I needed--

Steve: What the hell, Joe?

Joey: I needed someone to talk to besides you or mom.

Steve: Is this the first you're hearing of this?

Kayla: No, they told me this morning.

Steve: You cannot say anything to anyone. Do you understand how important that is?

Jade: Joey is my friend. Okay, I would never get him in trouble. And just so you know, I think it's great that you were ready to go to prison for him. 'Cause if it were my dad, he'd say, "throw the book at her." Yeah, I'd kill to have a dad like you.

Kayla: I can't believe she said that.

Steve: I have a feeling jade says pretty much anything she wants to.

Kayla: Which scares me to death.

Joey: But she's right, you know? I am lucky to have a dad like you. And I'm never gonna forget what you did for me.

Steve: I know. But the police closed the case. It's over now. Okay? We don't have anything to worry about anymore.

Kayla: Well, maybe not with the police, but, Joey, you-- you need to figure out how you can move forward now. I mean, we can try to help you, but--but maybe roman is right, and we should get you some kind of counseling.

Joey: I can't tell a shrink what I did.

Kayla: No, but you could discuss your feelings.

Steve: Hey.

Joey: [Sighs] I think they want to talk without us.

Jade: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right if I take the sandwich to go?

Steve: Yeah, take two.

Jade: Thanks.

[Tense music]

[Door clicks]

Steve: [Sighs] Wow. She's a piece of work, huh?

Kayla: I can't believe that she is the one that Joey chose to confide in. [Sighs]

Steve: Well, try not to worry. I mean, things couldn't have turned out much better than they did, right?

Kayla: Couldn't have turned out much better? Are you kidding me? Our son committed murder. And once again, you've managed to avoid disaster. [Chuckles] But nothing ever seems to stick to you, does it?

Joey: [Sighs]

Jade: So what do you want to do?

Joey: I don't care. [Grunts]

[Both chuckle]

Joey: I'm so relieved my dad's out of this mess. I could sit and watch the flowers grow.

Jade: [Chuckles] You know, I think your mom's a little worried about you.

Joey: Yeah, I know. You know, sometimes I wish my uncle roman didn't cover for me.

Jade: So you want to get sent up?

Joey: No, it's just that-- I don't know--getting away with killing somebody doesn't make you hate yourself any less.

Jade: Well, that Ava... she got what she deserved.

Joey: You didn't even know her.

Jade: Well, I know what you told me. Joey, she played you. She hit your mom over the head and locked her up and then went after your dad. The only reason she was in the hospital was because she OD'd so she can blame it on your mom, right? She was crazy, and she was never going to stop. Well, you stopped the bitch. And I don't care what you say. It had to be done, Joey. It was either her or your family. Okay, you had no choice.

Joey: Do you really believe that?

Jade: [Chuckles] Hey, let's do something crazy to celebrate.

Joey: Like what?

Jade: Like this.

Steve: What's going on, Kayla? I mean, you--you've been cold to me all day. What is it?

[Somber music]

You really do think that you and Joe would be better off without me, right? Is that it?

Kayla: [Sighs]

Steve: Tell me. Just tell me.

Kayla: Okay. A part of me-- a part of me does think that. And it's not because I don't love you. I will love you till I die. It just-- it's just that trouble-- trouble doesn't just follow you; you court it. And why shouldn't you? You always seem to beat it. [Sobs] And that's exciting to you. But the people around you get caught in the cross fire, and--and now it's our son. And he's gonna have to live with murder on his conscience for the rest of his life. And he wouldn't have-- he wouldn't have even known Ava Vitali if you hadn't come back.

Steve: If you don't think I carry the guilt of that every day, you're wrong.

Kayla: Well, now you're free. You're free. And Joey's safe. Oh, God, I hope that's true. But you created this situation because you can't stop yourself from making life more complicated and dangerous and difficult. [Sobs] And I-- I'm just not sure that I can... that I can really deal with that anymore.

Nicole: Victor.

[Machine beeping]

Nicole: Just one more question, and I'll go get your doctor.

Victor: No. No doctor. Sleep.

Nicole: Why would your brother want to see me again?

[Foreboding music]

Victor: For once in your life, trust me. Stay away from him. He's... he's evil. And this is me talking.

Steve: You're not sure you can deal with it? What does that mean?

Kayla: I took you back because I so wanted to believe it would be different this time. But since I did, my life and Joey's life, it's been madness.

Steve: I didn't invite Ava to come back here.

Kayla: No, but she did come back because she wanted you and she would do anything to have you. And now Joey is going to have to live with the fallout of that for the rest of his life.

[Foreboding music]

Kayla: I have a son to protect. That has to be my first priority, even if it means protecting him from you.

Steve: Protecting him from me? I mean, everything I've done has been to try to protect him! Why do you think I was willing to go to prison for him? [Sighs] Okay. So where does this leave us?

Kayla: I don't know. But I need to figure it out. And until then, I...

Steve: I'm not taking that back.

Kayla: I can't pretend that things are good between us anymore, because they aren't. I love you, but I've got to figure out if we can share a life together where we're both happy.

[Somber music]

Steve: Kayla.

[Door bangs]
