Nicole: It's common, right, not--not to feel the heartbeat? I-I mean, this happened with Dr. Knapp before. The baby was just in a--in a weird position.
Dr. Sedwick: Let's do an ultrasound, okay? We'll see what's going on.
Nicole: Okay.
Daniel: I think the world of you, Jennifer. I-I always have. But our--our, uh-- our lives are just going in completely opposite directions.
Jennifer: Okay, I'm not really sure I know what that means.
Daniel: Well, you, you're coping with your grief over Jack, trying to rebuild your life. And I-I made a commitment to being there with Nicole and that baby. And we are both consumed with-- with what we feel we have to do right now.
Jennifer: Okay, so that precludes our being friends.
Daniel: Yeah, friends, Jennifer? Um, I just--I don't-- I don't see it.
Jennifer: [Scoffs]
Daniel: I'm sorry.
Jennifer: It's okay. So what are--what are we? Are we acquaintances? I mean, should we even call ourselves that? Should I even acknowledge you when we're in the same room together? That can't be what you really want.
Daniel: I think that's the best thing.
Sami: [Laughs] Oh, I thought I'd never--
Rafe: You have no idea how much--
Sami: Talk later, kiss now.
Rafe: Yeah.
Bo: So you're happy? You're good? I mean, this "chief of staff" thing is quite a responsibility.
Kayla: You know, I-I like it. Um, it's distracting. And since we started the divorce proceedings, I... I don't have any complaints.
Bo: Hmm. Yeah, that's--that's when it works out best. You need a distraction from home. Work fills in. But, um, if work takes over and causes problems at home, that's when it's not so good.
Kayla: Is that what's going on with you?
Bo: Yeah, kind of. Work is getting more and more frustrating.
Kayla: Ah. Well, the buzz is that you're thinking about a career change.
Bo: Yeah, I am.
Hope: Whatever he decides, I am behind him--or should I say, to the side of him, and I support him completely.
Bo: [Jokingly] 100%.
Hope: Maybe. Yes.
Sami: [Sighs] I saw Chad. And he told me--he told me that EJ had something on you. He wouldn't say what it was, but... that it was enough to keep you away from me.
Rafe: It was killing me not to be able to tell you the truth. I hated hurting you.
Sami: You were protecting your sister, and I totally understand that.
Rafe: Yeah, but I wanted you to know why I said the things that I said.
Sami: I knew something must be happening. My instincts were screaming at me that something else was going on.
Rafe: I was running out of excuses.
Sami: Mm. Mm. I wish he...
Rafe: Mm.
Sami: Could see us right now and see his stupid, stupid plan didn't work.
Rafe: Let's not talk about EJ. No EJ.
Sami: You're right. What should we talk about?
Rafe: I don't know. [Laughs] Let's talk about us... our future.
Jennifer: That's fine, if that's what you want. I won't even look at you when we run into each other.
Daniel: Well, I wish you, uh--I wish you the best, Jennifer. I do.
Jennifer: Daniel, listen to me. The only reason that you are doing this is because of Nicole. You are letting her destroy your life, and she's destroying our friendship.
Nicole: Doctor... Dr. Knapp always has the monitor facing me so I can see my baby. Please show me my baby. You could--you could see my baby's heart beating, right? I can feel it. I can feel it like my own. Could you just do it again, please?
Dr. Sedwick: Nicole--
Nicole: Please, could you just show me my baby's heart beating? Give me the wand.
Dr. Sedwick: Nicole--
Nicole: Give me the wand. Give me the wand!
Daniel: You're just not gonna let it go, are you?
Jennifer: What, standing by and watch you throw away everything that matters to you in your life?
Daniel: You know what, Jen? Maybe you don't know what matters to me. Maybe you don't even know me at all--did you think of that?
Jennifer: I know that you love to practice medicine. And I know how hard you fought to keep doing that when you thought you couldn't operate anymore. So now you're trying to risk-- you're going to lose all of that for Nicole Walker, everything that matters to you?
Daniel: I can't even talk to you about this.
Jennifer: Can you talk about your daughter? Can you talk about her? 'Cause she's gone now. And she is fighting so hard to stay strong and feel better about herself and her choices.
Daniel: That's right, and that is a good thing.
Jennifer: No, that's a great thing... until she finds out that her father is caught up in some ridiculous scheme with Nicole Walker, trying to hide who the father of her baby is. Are you kidding me? What if you get hauled off to court for fraud? What if you lose your medical license?
Daniel: That is enough. I don't need you telling me--
Jennifer: And what about your mother? She is worried sick about you. She just had to say good-bye to her granddaughter for who knows how long, and now this. So you know what? If you don't want to help yourself, don't. But think about your mother and your daughter.
Daniel: Maggie and Melanie are in my life. You are not. Good-bye, Jennifer.
Jennifer: [Scoffs]
[Door closes]
Bo: Roman has been very patient, but I'm not sure how much longer he can wait for my final answer.
Kayla: Well, I'm sure you have conflicting feelings about it. You two are so close, and you work together.
Hope: Like I said, whatever Bo decides, I support him... 100%.
Kayla: Well, I do too, but I'm still worried about Roman. I mean, he's having to make all those layoffs. He's just sick about that.
Hope: [Clears throat loudly]
Bo: Layoffs?
Kayla: Yeah. I mean, that's what's happening down there, right?
Bo: How did--
Hope: Uh, w--uh, Bo, um, Roman had me read, uh, some of the junior detectives' personnel files, uh--I don't know--a few days ago, so...
Bo: Why?
Hope: Well, to help him figure out, you know, who should stay and who he'd have to let go. Stop. I didn't say--
Bo: Let go?
Hope: I did not say anything to you because it should not sway your decision one way or the other--Brady! Bo!
Bo: Not now.
Hope: Beauregard, uh--
[Door slams]
Kayla: Ugh.
Hope: Great.
[Cell phone rings]
Sami: Mm. I should...probably...
[Second cell phone rings]
Sami: Check that, 'cause it could be about the kids.
Rafe: Check it.
Sami: Okay. You check yours too. Same time. Ready?
Rafe: Okay.
Sami: Mm, go.
Rafe: Agh. It's work. It can wait. You?
Sami: Oh, yeah, totally stupid, not worth my time.
Rafe: Are you hungry?
Sami: Starved.
Rafe: Yeah, me too. I haven't been able to eat much lately.
Sami: I could eat lunch and dinner at the same time.
Rafe: Oh, so could I. So what do you say we eat lunch and dinner together, huh? We got a lot of catching up to do.
Sami: I'll clear my calendar.
Rafe: Okay. Me too.
Sami: I have one thing on my to-do list that I'd like to, uh, get rid of, though.
Rafe: Oh, yeah?
Sami: Take three minutes.
Rafe: Okay. Well, good. I've got a plan. I'll go pick us up some to-go. I know what you like. And then, uh, we'll have a picnic somewhere special.
Sami: Sounds perfect. So I'll meet you back at your loft.
Rafe: Yeah. So it's a date.
Sami: I hope it's more than that.
Rafe: Oh. How much more?
Sami: [Laughs]
EJ: Samantha. I can explain.
Nicole: Stop.
Dr. Sedwick: Did you say that you want me to--
Nicole: Stop.
Dr. Sedwick: I'm so sorry.
[Ultrasound beeping]
Dr. Sedwick: Nicole... your baby is dead.
Nicole: [Sobbing]
[Bang at door]
Bo: Are you really considering taking cops off the street to hit your magic number?
Roman: I got no choice. You know that.
Bo: These guys are fresh out of the academy. They got families to take care of, and this is what you're gonna do to them?
Maggie: Hi, Nick.
Nick: Oh, hey, Aunt Maggie.
Maggie: How you doing?
Nick: I'm, uh--I'm good. Things are okay.
Maggie: It's not easy being a barback, huh?
Nick: Oh, I'm grateful to have a job.
Rafe: Hey, Maggie.
Maggie: Hi, Rafe.
Rafe: Nick.
Nick: Hey.
Rafe: Could I borrow you for a sec?
Nick: Yeah.
Maggie: Is everything okay?
Rafe: Yeah, it's not police biz.
Maggie: [Laughs]
Rafe: [Whispers] Personal.
Maggie: Okay. [Chuckles] Then I'll let you two talk.
Rafe: All right. Listen, I just-- I want to thank you for what you did for my sister.
Nick: Yeah. I mean, Gabi's a-a really good person. I was--I was glad I could help.
Rafe: Yeah, she is. She just, uh--well, she made some really bad mistakes that could have ruined her life.
Nick: Yeah, I, um-- I know what that's like.
Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, I'll bet. Um, listen, here's the thing. I mean, you guys--you're not even really friends, are you? I mean, you--you hardly know each other. So why'd you put yourself on the line for her?
Sami: You can explain.
EJ: Yes.
Sami: Oh, this is gonna be good.
EJ: Samantha, what I did--
Sami: You mean the blackmailing Rafe? To protect his sister, he has to stay away from me...
EJ: Please, Samantha.
Sami: So that you can "have me."
EJ: What I did... however it may have looked from the outside or however misguided it--
Sami: Twisted and sick.
EJ: I did it for one reason.
Sami: Oh, God. Who are you talking to, EJ? This is me. You and me, we have been down this road before multiple times.
EJ: I know. And yes, I did something that was terrible.
Sami: You think?
EJ: But my motives were pure. I did it... because I love you.
Dr. Sedwick: You need to know this is nothing you did or didn't do. These things generally happen when the baby's health is compromised in some way-- perhaps a heart defect or some sort of chromosomal defect-- any number of conditions we had no way of detecting earlier. There are some things that we need to take care of now, obviously. We're going to have to schedule a time to induce labor, preferably in the next day or two. Now, I will contact Dr. Knapp, of course, and let her know what happened. Nicole. Nicole? Do you understand what I'm saying to you?
Sami: Love. You love me? You are pulling out all the stops.
EJ: I'm telling you the truth. It's from my heart.
Sami: You don't know what the truth looks like, and you don't have a heart.
EJ: Could we go somewhere private to talk about this, please?
Sami: EJ, if my hair were on fire and you were the only person around to offer me a lift to a hydrant, I would say no. Is that sinking in?
EJ: Samantha, we were starting something together.
Sami: Yes, I was starting to make a mistake-- a mistake with you that I have made before.
EJ: You were not making a mistake. You were not.
Sami: I was me with you, EJ. I was being myself. I wasn't playing games with you. The games that I always make when someone hurts me or when I am scared, I wasn't doing any of that. I was being me.
EJ: And it was wonderful.
Sami: So you could manipulate me again? I was trusting you again. Despite all evidence to the contrary, to the fact that you have not changed an iota.
EJ: Samantha, it felt incredible. It felt wonderful, and it was real.
Sami: But you weren't being real with me. You held me in your arms. You comforted me, knowing full well that the only reason Rafe rejected me is because you're blackmailing him with his sister's safety. No, you have to listen. No! You said that you hate seeing me cry, but you made it happen by manipulating four people's lives, including your brother Chad, whom you say that you care about.
EJ: I care about Chad very much.
Sami: You would sell anyone up the river to further your agenda. And I get it. But you tell me you love me. But those are empty words... because you are empty. Rafe knows what real love is. I belong with him. I'm gonna go be with him.
Nick: Uh, look, Rafe, um... I was given a second shot by a lot of people who should've told me to go to hell. And I just thought that Gabi deserved the same chance to-- to get on with her life.
Rafe: Oh. So you guys have been getting close.
Nick: Uh, we're--we're friends.
Rafe: Uh-huh.
Nick: And--and I've really-- um, I've really been appreciating her friendship. You know, a lot of people, like, cross the street when they see me coming, and--and Gabi's just never judged me.
Rafe: No, she wouldn't do that. Well, I understand why you'd want to... reciprocate... be there for her like she's been there for you.
Nick: Yeah. Exactly. You don't like this, do you?
Rafe: What? Don't like what?
Nick: Just that me and Gabi have--have become friends.
Roman: Bo, come on, you know me. You know I hate doing this, but I got no choice. I've got to lay off our two least experienced detectives.
Bo: Why? They're all good at their jobs.
Roman: Yes, they are good! It's about seniority, and you know that.
Bo: And I'm more senior than all of them put together. Tell you what-- what if I take early retirement? Do they keep their jobs?
Roman: That would be a very bad reason for you to give up your career.
Bo: And they're just starting their careers. They don't have anything to fall back on. What are they gonna do when you let 'em go?
Kayla: Oh!
Jennifer: Sorry.
Kayla: [Laughing] Sorry. Were you taking out your recycling?
Jennifer: Uh, yeah. Yeah, I was about to.
Kayla: Well, I just wanted to stop by and--and check on you and--and just tell you how happy I am that you're back to work, as is everybody.
Jennifer: Yeah, well, not everybody. Sorry. I-I-I-- it's nothing.
Kayla: Well, it doesn't sound like nothing.
Jennifer: Uh... I'm just thinking about a lot. Everything at work is fine. I'm just, uh, wondering if I really belong there.
Kayla: Why would you say that?
Jennifer: I don't know. Just been thinking.
Kayla: About quitting?
Maggie: Daniel, what a nice surprise. Come on in.
Daniel: Well, I spoke to Jennifer.
Maggie: And?
Daniel: And? And it's obvious that you spoke to her on my behalf.
Maggie: Well, yeah, I did. But, Daniel, it was only because--
Daniel: Okay, mom, I confided in you. You can't bring something that I say to you in confidence to Jennifer--or anyone else.
Maggie: You're absolutely right. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but I was just worried about you, and I thought Jennifer could help.
Daniel: Mm-hmm, well, we're no longer friends, so it--
Maggie: "No longer"? Daniel, that's a bit harsh, don't you think?
Daniel: Okay, you know what, mom? Please. Please. I need you to promise me that you will not interfere again in what's going on between me and Jennifer, which is nothing, by the way.
Maggie: "Nothing"? "Nothing"?
Daniel: Yes. No-- listen, mom. Mom, I need it to stay that way.
Dr. Sedwick: I know you're in shock right now and that it's very difficult to focus. So why don't you go home and get some rest, okay? I think you should rest. And I'll have one of the nurses call you, and she'll explain everything you need to do.
Nicole: Daniel.
Dr. Sedwick: I'm sorry?
Nicole: Daniel Rafael... that's my baby's name.
Dr. Sedwick: I'm so sorry your doctor isn't on duty. As I said, I'll let her know what happened.
Nicole: It's fine. Look, I-I know you've been here longer than you wanted to. You have a flight to catch.
Dr. Sedwick: No, no. I can stay a bit longer.
Nicole: Please go.
Dr. Sedwick: All right. I'll let the nurse know that you're in here. Nicole... I am truly sorry.
Nicole: [Sobbing] Oh, God.
Roman: Yeah. You're right. You're right. If you resign and the two guys I was gonna lay off agree to pay cuts, yeah, I could figure out a way to keep them on staff. But, Bo, you're the best detective I've ever had. You leaving the police force is counterproductive to everything we've tried to do here, and like I said, being a martyr is not a good reason to give up your career.
Bo: I'm not being a martyr, bro.
Roman: [Sighs] And the winner is?
Bo: Those two cops.
Roman: [Sighs] Bo.
Bo: I filled out my resignation, like, a week ago. Date's not filled in. You can do that.
Roman: So you've been carrying this around for a week? Why?
Bo: Ah, I told myself I'd just... I'd give it to you when the... when the moment was right. And the moment is right.
Rafe: Gabi's pretty vulnerable right now. You know, her whole world's been turned upside down. I just want to make sure she's not taken advantage of.
Nick: Well, I, um... I give you my word. I will not do that.
Rafe: Good. Okay. Listen, switching gears-- I've got someone who I care about as well who is starving right now.
Nick: Yeah.
Rafe: So think you could help me out?
Nick: Yeah, yeah, you bet. Over here.
EJ: I see what you're doing here. You're pitting me against Rafe... darkness against light... because it's easier, because it's safer, because it's expected. Oh, you may even like the fact that he's claiming paternity of another woman's child. Gives him an edge, doesn't it? He's a liar. And he'll be caught.
Sami: I can't help thinking about all the times you've kept reminding me that you think he really is the father of Nicole's baby.
EJ: I lied to you... so that I could have you. He lied to another man about his child. Ask him. Look him in the eye and ask him. And you will see what I already know.
Jennifer: Kayla, I didn't-- I-I didn't say that I was quitting.
Kayla: No, but you're thinking about it.
Jennifer: I just hate to see someone that I know and care about toss everything that matters to him in the trash.
[Cell phone rings]
Kayla: Oh.
[Second cell phone rings]
Kayla: Just a second.
Jennifer: No, that's mine. Excuse me.
Kayla: Dr. Brady. What? All right, I'll be right there.
Jennifer: What is going on? We need to get to the hospital.
Kayla: Right now.
Maggie: Okay, Daniel, you're the one that told me how upsetting it was to think that Jennifer would change her opinion about you, because you-- you were making choices she didn't like.
Daniel: Yeah, but they're my choices, mom--they're mine.
Maggie: I know, but that's what was upsetting for me, to see you so defeated. And so I step-- [Sighs] Okay. I stepped in... where you didn't ask me to. It's becau-- hmm. I love and I care about you.
Daniel: I know you do.
Maggie: I'm just trying to help.
Daniel: But it's not helping.
Maggie: Oh. [Sighs] I'm sorry about you and Jennifer.
Ciara: Grandma Maggie, can you help me with this?
Maggie: Ciara's having dinner with us tonight.
Daniel: Mm.
Maggie: [Chuckles]
Daniel: You take care of a lot of people.
Maggie: Maybe because I like to. Like mother, like son. You need to be needed too.
Daniel: Right. Okay, I'm not--I can't-- [Mumbling]
Maggie: Daniel, I love you.
Daniel: I love you too. [Sighs] Oh, that stupid voice mail. Hey, Nicole, it's me. Uh, I've been thinking about what you said about moving to Utah. Let's talk more about that.
Nicole: [Chuckles] God, I couldn't wait to see you in this. [Chuckles] And this was for Halloween, if you made it on time. And this... [Chuckles] Oh, God. How come this is happening to me again? [Sobbing] I could hear you cry in my sleep. [Sobbing] I know what it would sound like. I could feel your-- I could feel your fingers... curled around mine for the first time. I know I could. And if I could feel that in my dreams, I know you were real. You were there. You were mine. [Sobbing] You were mine. Oh, God, you were my baby. Oh, you... oh, my little Danny. Oh! No. No. No, how can I say good-bye? How can I never hold you?
Hope: Hey. Hey.
Bo: Hey.
Hope: When'd you get back?
Bo: Oh, just a minute ago. Ciara's poem.
Hope: "No guts, no glory."
Bo: Yeah. She's heard me say that a time or two.
Hope: You made quite an impression.
Bo: Now it's time for me to put my money where my mouth is and live up to that.
Hope: You do, every day.
Bo: Mm, not so sure about that. Maybe today.
Hope: [Laughs] You went to go see Roman. How'd it go?
Bo: I resigned.
Hope: You went through with it, huh?
Bo: Mm-hmm.
Hope: I'm so proud of you.
Bo: Thanks for supporting me in this.
Hope: Of course. So now you're ready to start planning your next project, right?
Bo: Well, that next project DiMera can wait. Come on, come with me.
Hope: Where?
Bo: You'll find out. Let's go.
Hope: Surprise?
Bo: Uh-huh.
Hope: I like surprises.
Nicole: Daniel. [Sobs]
Kayla: So how long has the power been out in the E.R.?
Louise: About an hour. Now the computers are down hospital-wide.
Jennifer: All right, maintenance and I.T., they've been notified?
Louise: They're all over it. The backup generator-- it's holding out, but everyone's on edge.
Kayla: All right, I'm gonna go down to the E.R. and see what's happening. Can you handle things here?
Jennifer: Yeah, I'll have a press release out in 15 minutes.
Kayla: Okay. Listen, Louise. Can you call the 911 dispatch and tell them to send all non-essential cases across town to St. Mary's until we're up and running, all right?
Louise: Yep.
Kayla: Thanks.
Jennifer: Can I help you with something?
Anne: Do you have any idea what kind of chaos is going on around here?
Jennifer: Really? It seems very controlled to me, and if you'll excuse me, I have a press release I need to get out.
Anne: Those should've been done an hour ago. You should be helping out like the rest of the staff, instead of searching through your online thesaurus for another word for Armageddon. Were you even in the hospital?
Jennifer: You know what? That is enough! [Slams notebook down] Oh. [Inhales sharply] Gosh.
Daniel: Let me see your hand.
Jennifer: What? It's fine.
Daniel: No, it's not. You're not gonna be able to help anybody here if it swells up. Let me see your hand. Jennifer.
Jennifer: Oh.
EJ: [Sighs]
Rafe: Did I get the food? Are you kidding? [Chuckles] I ordered stuff off the pub's menu they didn't even know they had.
Sami: Ha. Nice.
Rafe: So we can either go on the picnic, or, uh... we could stay here.
Sami: Whichever you want.
Rafe: Uh... what happened?
Sami: EJ's the one who texted me when we were at the town square. He was there too. He was watching us.
Rafe: Okay.
Sami: I shouldn't have lied to you about it. I just--I wanted to confront him, and I thought you wouldn't leave if you knew. But I still shouldn't have lied.
Rafe: [Sighs] This is so weird.
Sami: I know. I know. But you know what? I'm on a roll here. [Chuckles awkwardly] Rafe, the thing is, I get it, okay? I want this. I do want this to work. And--and I know that for it to work between us, we have to be honest and--and no more secrets, right? No more lies. And for me, that's done, okay? It's in the past.
Rafe: Okay. Agreed.
Sami: Good. So then you can tell me the truth. Are you really the father of Nicole's baby? I'm done!
Bo: Hello, ladies.
Maggie: Oh, hi.
Hope: Hi.
Ciara: Hi, Daddy.
Bo: Hi, baby.
Maggie: Hi, honey.
Hope: Hi.
Bo: Ah. I read your poem. It is beautiful. And I am very, very sorry I missed your assembly. I promise you that will never, ever happen again. And, um, will you give me a private reading?
Ciara: Sure.
Bo: Okay.
Ciara: "I hope to play when it's warm outside. I hope to play when it's cold."
[Cell phone rings]
Rafe: Uh--
Sami: Look, I know you had to lie to me about Gabi, okay? I totally understand why you did. But with Nicole's baby, I mean, EJ really believes that he is that child's father, and he's gonna stop at nothing to prove it, and if he does...
Rafe: Right.
Sami: I mean, you know EJ-- he's gonna systematically destroy anyone who tried to stand in the way of him and his baby. I want to help. I can help you and Nicole keep that child away from EJ. You just have to tell me the truth. Are you the baby's father or not?
Nicole: [Sighs] Why can't I get into my voice mail? I need to talk to Daniel. [Sighs]
Jennifer: Oh.
Daniel: Okay, hold still.
Jennifer: Oh. That hurts.
Daniel: Yeah?
Jennifer: Yeah.
Daniel: Okay, well, we'll X-ray it when the power comes back on downstairs. I'm pretty confident it's just a--just a sprain. But just to be sure. See right here? Look at that--right there. It's swelling already.
Jennifer: It's funny. Last time you brought me to the E.R., it was my face that was swollen.
[Both chuckle]
Daniel: Yeah, one of my better first dates--poisoning.
Jennifer: [Laughs] That was funny.
Daniel: Yeah, it was funny. You were funny... looking.
Jennifer: [Laughs] Okay. Back to this.
