Bo: I'm just worried that Baker's gonna get less time than Hope. I mean, if he's out on the streets before she has a chance to be home...

Davis: Are you ready to call your next witness, Ms. Jenkins?

Jenkins: [Sighs] Actually, your honor, the state rests.

Bo: She must think she's got enough to nail him.

Davis: Mr. Master, you may call your first witness.

Master: Thank you, your honor. The defense calls Hope Brady to the stand.

Vivian: I ordered a lovely pink pillow for the interior of the sarcophagus. Poor Maggie, she'll be lying in eternity with that hideous red hair clashing with the little pillow. [Giggles] Tacky in perpetuity. I love thinking about it.

Gus: What you must think about, Madam, is making sure your husband doesn't find out what you're doing. Or you're going to need a sarcophagus of your own.

Vivian: I'll make you a bet. I will bet that once I've tucked Maggie Horton into her eternal resting place, Victor will forget that she ever existed.

Nicole: [Exhales] Well... apparently I'm still alive. Which means EJ doesn't know yet that I'm the one who gave Rafe the CD. Because when he does find out... I'll be swimming with the fishes.

EJ: Hey. Hey, get away from that.

Rafe: It's in his own words, Sami. He's talking to his daddy about it.

EJ: This is manufactured, okay? It's nothing, it's rubbish. Don't let him do this.

Rafe: Yeah, that's right. Stefano knew about it even before you moved in.

Kate: Well, Allie and Johnny are working delightedly in that wretched little kitchen. It must be their mother's side of the family shining through. Although I think the little walk did them good.

Stefano: Mm, it didn't do me any good.

Kate: I just wish that EJ and Rafe had picked somewhere other than our living room to have their little showdown, 'cause I'm not looking forward to spending the afternoon in Brady Pub. [Sighs] Darling. Why won't you tell me what's going on? Why did Rafe stop the wedding? What's he up to?

Stefano: I told you, I do not know, all right? But I sure as hell am going to find out.

Sami: Don't you see, EJ? I have to listen to it. You can't spend the rest of your life with this hanging over your head.

EJ: I thought you trusted me. Samantha, he manufactured this. He's lying.

Sami: Okay. Okay, then if it's a fraud, I'll know it. Of course, I'll know it. And then we can just go on with our lives.

EJ: Samantha, you know--

Sami: You have to believe me.

EJ: I won't allow it.

Sami: Okay. I mean, it's your house. It's your call.

Rafe: Sami.

Sami: But you know, EJ, I'm not marrying you until I hear that.

Rafe: You ready?

Hope: So help me, God.

Roman: I heard at the station Hope was transferred here.

Bo: Yeah. She can't take this, Roman.

Master: Will you please state your name and rank for the record?

Hope: My name is Hope Brady. I don't hold any rank.

Master: At the moment. But you did, didn't you? Up to the point where you were charged with six counts of assault and one count of attempted murder. What was that rank?

Hope: I was detective. For the Salem Police Department.

Master: Who assigned you the case?

Hope: I asked for the assignment.

Master: How noble of you. Who was police commissioner when you asked for the assignment?

Hope: Bo Brady.

Master: How are you related to him?

Hope: [Clears throat] He's my husband.

Master: And what's your relationship with your colleague Commander Roman Brady?

Hope: He's my brother-in-law.

Master: Were both your husband and your brother-in-law among your victims?

Hope: Yes.

Master: I'm sorry. I-I didn't hear that.

Hope: Yes.

Master: They ended up in the hospital, didn't they?

Hope: Yes, they did.

Master: And as lead detective, you interviewed them in the hospital, didn't you?

Hope: Yes.

Master: During those interviews, did you ask them if they had any idea who bashed them over their heads? Or in your husband's case, who drugged him and doused him with gasoline?

Bo: Okay, that's enough! You've got to stop. She's suffered enough.

Melanie: Ugh! [Speaking foreign language]

Maggie: What does that mean, darling?

Melanie: Oh, uh, that means I hate knitting, and you don't like people swearing in your house.

Maggie: Well, then how about you don't knit? [Chuckles]

Melanie: No, I wanna be a hands-on sister, which means involved in--damn it!

Maggie: Ooh! You've really bought into this family thing hook, line, and sinker, haven't you?

Melanie: Yeah. And aside from knitting, this is the happiest I've ever been in my life. And I have you to thank for that.

Kate: Right, you don't know what's going on. You always know everything that's going on.

Stefano: Let's change the subject.

Kate: An F.B.I. agent bursts into our house, stops your son's wedding to a woman that you and I both despise, and you wanna change the subject?

Stefano: Katherine!

Kate: Fine. Well, let's see. I think will looked really lovely in his suit. Although, I wish I could get him to change his hairstyle. Maybe we'll just sit here quietly. How's that?

[On tape recorder] EJ: Don't you think I know that? I live with that every single day. If Samantha finds out what I did I lose everything.

EJ: Stop it. Stop it! I'm sorry, Samantha, I cannot let you listen to another word.

Bo: This can't go on. You've got to stop.

Davis: Silence, silence! Another word and I'll have you thrown out, Commissioner.

Master: Do you think you did a good job as lead detective?

Hope: No.

Master: In the course of the investigation, did you do a profile on the person you were looking for?

Hope: Yes. Yes, I did.

Master: Defense exhibit one. Former Detective Brady, will you please read the highlighted portion?

Davis: Mrs. Brady?

Hope: [Clears throat] "The perpetrator would seem to be fueled by rage. The violence of the attacks suggests... personal rather than mercenary motives."

Master: Did you think the perp was mentally stable?

Hope: No.

Master: And now that you know who committed the crimes, do you think she is presently mentally competent?

Richard: [Mouths] No.

Hope: [Sighs] I don't know.

Master: Do you think we should take evidence compiled by a patently crazy woman to put an innocent man away?

Richard: Stop it! Just...stop it, I'm telling you.

Davis: Sit down, Baker, before I throw you out.

Master: Tell me. Did you, at any time, have any memory of my client committing any crime?

Hope: [Sighs] No.

Master: Did you just get your husband and your brother-in-law to find a scapegoat to--to spread the blame around? To make things go easier on you?

Richard: That's it, that's it. You're fired. He's no longer my attorney.

[Gavel drops]

Davis: Last warning, Baker.

Master: How do we know that you just didn't turn your famous rage against my client? Make him pay for something he didn't do?

Richard: Trial's over! I plead guilty.

Master: That's not a good idea, Doc.

Richard: Well, then just let her go. Okay? Just...let her go. Don't do this to her. She can't take it.

Gus: You've got a lot riding on that bet.

Vivian: Uh-oh. Here comes that gloomy Gus thing again.

Gus: We're in a mausoleum!

Vivian: But that doesn't justify your being consistently negative!

Gus: I'm concerned about you. Maggie Horton is well-known and well-liked.

Vivian: Oh, well, she's got everybody mesmerized.

Gus: Don't you think someone will notice when she drops off the face of the earth? It's not like you don't have a track record of dealing harshly with people who get in your way.

Vivian: Do you think I'm an idiot?

Gus: No, I think this plan's just ducky. It worked so well the last time.

Vivian: Well, listen to me. When Maggie Horton disappears, not one person is going to be suspicious because Maggie Horton's going to take care of all that.

Maggie: Melanie.

Melanie: What?

Maggie: I will never be able to tell you how much it meant to me to have you and Philip move in here.

Melanie: Mm. We love it here.

Maggie: But it's not... it shouldn't be permanent. You're a happily married couple but you need your time alone.

Melanie: Don't say things like that. We're not going anywhere.

Maggie: Well, maybe I am.

Melanie: What?

Maggie: I've been doing a lot of thinking, and... maybe it's time for me to leave Salem.

Kate: You know, I think that I am going to give them a call and see how things are moving along.

Stefano: No.

Kate: You know that this could go on forever. We know that Sami loves being the center of attention. She has two men vying over her. That's like crack cocaine to her. My love, what is it? I know you're so upset and it doesn't make any sense to me, it really doesn't. Did you really want EJ to marry Sami? You despise her more than I do.

Stefano: I need some air.

[Door slams]

Nicole: Oh, damn it.

EJ: Don't you--don't you see what he's trying to do, Samantha? He's trying to poison your mind against me. He's manufactured this stuff. He's trying to-to-to--

Rafe: Come on.

EJ: Stop!

Rafe: Who can manufacture those two accents, EJ?

EJ: Don't let--look, don't let him do this to us, Samantha. Don't. Don't let him do this to us. Okay, you see what he's trying to do? Don't fall for that.

Sami: EJ, I wanna listen to it. I'm not gonna let you just tell me not to listen to it.

EJ: Don't let him do this to our children.

Sami: EJ, it's for our children. I am doing this for our children.

Richard: And there were times when it was obvious that she didn't know who I was or what she had done. Your honor, she shouldn't be held responsible for what she did. She shouldn't be punished for things she couldn't control.

Davis: Dr. Baker, Mrs. Brady isn't on trial; you are.

Richard: Well, then can we get the trial over with so she can get out of here? I think she's pretty much seen enough of me.

Master: This is all against advice of counsel.

Davis: He has a constitutional right to be an idiot.

Richard: Just one more thing, your honor. I plead guilty. And I am guilty. I'm not the only one.

Melanie: Maggie, you can't leave Salem. You are Salem.

Maggie: I don't mean forever. I just feel that I need to be by myself.

Melanie: Yeah, these last couple of months have been hard.

Maggie: I need to visit my daughters. And then I thought about taking that cruise that Mickey and I had planned.

Melanie: Okay, well, that sounds great for you, but what about me? You really think I can be here without you?

Maggie: I know you can.

Melanie: Fine. Well, I'm gonna miss you a lot. But I hope you have fun.

Maggie: You'd probably think it was boring. But on the cruise, I just wanna sit in my deck chair and... [Sighs] Not move a muscle.

Vivian: Oh, oh. When the sarcophagus arrives, don't go overboard with the tip. I mean, it's not like we're gonna be continuous customers.

Gus: Where will you be, Madam?

Vivian: I'm going to activate my plan. I'm going to lure that red-headed mummy to her final resting place.

Nicole: She's grown so much. So, Kate, you having another one of your chili dog cravings?

Kate: The bar is over there, Nicole. I'm sure that's the reason you're here.

Nicole: Mm-hmm, nice to see you too.

Kate: Stefano, could you do that little thing you do that makes people disappear?

Stefano: Look, we're not in the mood for any small talk, Nicole.

Nicole: Mm, well you two don't look like you're having much fun. Why is that, hmm? [Gasps] I heard that EJ and Sami are getting married.

Stefano: Where did you hear that?

Nicole: And if that's the truth, then why are you two here, hmm?

[On tape recorder]

Stefano: Anna is the only one that knows the truth. And she has been neutralized.

EJ: She'd better be.

Stefano: Now she knows what would happen to her if she ever told anybody that you paid her to kidnap Sydney.

EJ: Yeah. Can't believe I did that. I must have been out of my mind. I was just so angry at you... Samantha, and Nicole. I just wanted to make you all suffer.

Stefano: You did that in spades. Huh, you made us all worry about Sydney's well-being. For God's sake, you made us think that she was dead.

EJ: Yes, I know what I did, thank--

Sami: You did it. You did it, didn't you?

Davis: Dr. Baker, the court accepts your plea of guilty. Sentencing will be at a time to be determined. Bailiff, see that the defendant is returned to his cell. Court is adjourned.

[Gavel drops]

Richard: Hope... I--

Deputy: Well, this went faster than anyone thought.

Roman: Meaning her transport won't be here for a while?

Deputy: Right. Want me to wait by the door?

Roman: Yeah, that would be a good idea. Thanks, Officer. How you doing?

Hope: I'm fine.

Roman: Really? It was pretty--pretty rough up there just now.

Hope: Roman... I'm fine. Don't worry about me.

Roman: You know that's not gonna happen.

Carly: I, uh, I have to check in at the hospital. See you later, okay?

Bo: Okay, thank you.

Carly: At least Baker's gonna pay for what he did, right?

Bo: Yeah. Hey.

Roman: Hey. Uh, Hope has to wait for transport, so I should get back and check on Sami.

Bo: Yeah, go, I'll stay.

Roman: All right, good. Hope. You hang in there, okay? All right.

Bo: I'm sorry, I--I should have seen this coming, warned you.

Hope: You have to stop trying to look after me.

Bo: Right, too little, too late. Baker was right. He was dead right about me.

Kate: To point out the obvious, Nicole, you're still here.

Nicole: [Sighs] Did something happen at the wedding?

Stefano: You seem to be the one with all the inside information. You tell us.

Nicole: Well, I was with Rafe when he got a phone call, and he seemed angry. I was just making sure he didn't do anything rash.

Stefano: Like what, Nicole? I mean, what do you think he could do?

Sami: How could you do it?

EJ: I didn't. Samantha, he dummied the disk.

Sami: Stop it.

Rafe: No, EJ, if it was fake, why'd you pay Nicole 5 million dollars, hmm?

EJ: Because I want you to keep that kind of filth from Samantha!

Sami: I said stop. That was you. And that was Stefano. You think after all these years I wouldn't recognize your voice?

EJ: Samantha, I just... please. I really think--don't listen to him.

Sami: Rafe, I-- I think you should go.

Rafe: Come with me.

Sami: No.

Rafe: Oh, come on. We'll go and we'll take this disk to your father.

EJ: That's not admissible in a court of law, Rafe.

Rafe: That's it? That's it? That's all you have to say for yourself after everything that you have done? After torturing your family? The woman you supposedly love, and your kids--that's it? "It's not admissible?" That's all you're worried about, isn't it? Whether you have to pay.

EJ: I think I'll pay. Don't you?

Rafe: Not enough. Not nearly enough.

Sami: Rafe. Rafe, just go, please.

Rafe: I'm sorry. I'm sorry you had to go through all this. Clearly you didn't deserve it.

EJ: Samantha, I...

Sami: Just stop. Just be honest with me. Look me in the eye and tell me that you took Sydney from me.

EJ: Yes. I took Sydney.

[Cell phone rings]

Hope: What do you think is gonna happen to Baker?

Bo: We'll wait and see.

Hope: You know, I was looking at him and I thought... this man knows the real me. And I don't.

Deputy: Transport is outside.

Bo: Thanks. No, he doesn't know the real you. That is not who you are.

Hope: You keep that thought.

[Door closes]

Melanie: Hey, do you knit?

Carly: Do you want me to?

Melanie: No, no. [Giggles] I was just knitting something for my little brother or sister, and I--well, I suck at it. So I was wondering if maybe that was genetic.

Carly: I'm not much of a domestic Goddess, sorry.

Melanie: Duly noted.

Carly: I can tune an engine, though.

Melanie: Ah, babies love that. [Both giggle] Mom?

Carly: I love hearing you say that.

Melanie: [Chuckles] When you walked in just now, you looked awful.

Carly: Don't like hearing that so much.

Melanie: No... is everything okay?

Carly: Shows, huh?

Melanie: Kinda.

Carly: It was a rough morning. I went to Dr. Baker's trial to give Bo some support.

Melanie: How'd that go?

Carly: Not so good. Baker's lawyer put Hope on the stand and was pretty brutal to her.

Melanie: She was pretty brutal to Bo.

Carly: Honey, it was bad. It's like kicking Hope when she's down.

Melanie: Bo didn't take that so well?

Carly: No, I'm glad he didn't take the lawyer out. He was that angry. But that's the thing about Bo. He can't stand to see a woman in distress.

Stefano: Come over here. I want you to tell me why you are so curious about Hernandez, and I want you to tell me now.

Nicole: I don't have to answer to you.

Stefano: Why were you with him? And why the hell is he so upset?

Sami: Oh, my God. [Sighs] Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

EJ: Samantha.

Sami: On the plane. And that hospital in Cleveland. Nicole was panicking. Begging us to believe her. That she didn't know where Sydney was. Right from that moment you knew. Every time I... I would fall apart and you would put your arms around me... lend me your strength. Every time, you knew that she was okay. And it's all just...just like Rafe said? All of it is just because you wanted to have a--a front row seat to see me...to see me suffer?

EJ: Yeah. That was the point. I know that it was wrong. But I really wanted you to feel some of the pain and suffering that you made me feel when you kept my daughter from me.

Sami: I didn't tell you that your daughter was dead.

EJ: Yes, you did! That is exactly what you did!

Sami: What?

Carly: Mm. Hey.

Bo: Hey. Sorry, didn't mean to wake you.

Carly: It's okay. Just, sleeping seemed like a good way to make this day go away.

Bo: That's a good idea.

Carly: How's Hope?

Bo: Worried about her.

Nicole: I don't know what Rafe knows about anything. He doesn't confide in me.

Stefano: You've always been one of the best liars in the world. See, I think that you don't want me to know something. I also think, Nicole, that you are very, very afraid.

EJ: You knew that Grace was our child. You said nothing until after she died. And then you chose to tell me.

Sami: I was out of my mind with grief, EJ.

EJ: I sat in that morgue for hours! Hours, Samantha! With that little baby girl, thinking she was my daughter. I looked at her little hands and her little feet... thinking about how you kept her from me, that I would never know this girl. And yeah, I swore--oh, my God, I swore I was going to get my revenge on you. I was going to make you pay. And then when I found out that Sydney was our daughter--

Sami: Yeah! Good for you! Wow, there's your chance for revenge! Not, "Oh, thank God, my daughter's not dead." "Oh, I get to spend time and love my little girl. She's alive." No. No, the first thing you think about is getting revenge against me!

EJ: Because you kept my daughter from me, all right.

Sami: [Scoffs] Yeah. I did. That's right, EJ. I did keep her from you. And you know why? It wasn't because I wanted revenge against you. And it wasn't even to hurt your feelings, EJ. I was trying to be a good parent. I was trying to do what's best for my daughter. And this place, this family, is dangerous. I had just seen a man get murdered on your doorstep. And you've told me, even a couple times, that you understood my motives. Or maybe that was a lie too. But I'll tell you what, EJ. Looking back, I should have trusted my instinct, 'cause it turns out you're a-- you're a monster.

EJ: [Chuckles] Oh, you'd like that, wouldn't you? You'd like that. That would make things really easy for you. Well, you know, Samantha. You know in your heart that is not who I am.

Hope: Bo.

Bo: Hope.

Hope: Please. Bo, save me.

Bo: [Breathing heavily]

Rafe: Hey.

Roman: Hey. I was hoping you'd bring Sami.

Rafe: Nope. She stayed with EJ.

Roman: Really? Damn.

Rafe: Oh, no. The wedding's off. She just wanted some time to cuss him out.

Roman: What is this?

Rafe: Proof that EJ kidnapped Sydney. Paid Anna to do it.

Roman: Wow. And Sami knows that?

Rafe: Mm-hmm. Yep. Think the end is finally in sight, Roman. [Quietly] Yeah.

EJ: Look, I didn't--did not believe it myself at first.

Sami: Believe what?

EJ: I wanted to make you suffer, okay? I wanted to make you need me. I wanted to make you so vulnerable...

Sami: That I would only need you.

EJ: Absolutely. Absolutely. When you were completely dependent on me, I was gonna take the kids, Samantha. I was gonna take Sydney and Johnny, and I was gonna go. All right? Disappear. Leave you completely on your own. But in the process of doing that I realized something.

Sami: What?

EJ: I realized the reason that I was so angry was not because I'd been deceived. It was because I'd been deceived by you. Somebody... who I had once loved. And who I still loved.

Sami: You don't know the meaning of the word.

EJ: No? When we went swimming out there with Sydney and Johnny, was that not love? Hmm? Every night when we tucked Sydney into bed, and we sang to her, and we read Johnny stories, was that not love? When we sat at the table here as a family and we played cards, and you looked across at me and you smiled. Samantha, tell me was that not--

Sami: But it was all an act!

EJ: An act?

Sami: It was an act.

EJ: To what purpose was it an act?

Sami: I don't know, you tell me. You have to tell me. What? What were you doing? You were just trying to seduce me? Trying to get me to--to...

EJ: Fall in love with me. Because I love you. Samantha. I mean, those are the most wonderful moments of my entire life.

Sami: Well, savor them. They're not happening again.

EJ: Babe, just stop, okay? Listen, you heard my voice on that tape, right?

Sami: Mm, I sure did. I heard every word as you admitted to what you had done.

EJ: Then you heard how much I hated, hated what I had done. Rafe was right about one thing.

Sami: He was right about everything.

EJ: He was right about one thing. In the final seconds, when everything came crashing down, it was like I awoke from some horrible nightmare, Samantha. I-I-I couldn't do it, who was I kidding? I couldn't hurt you. I couldn't take Sydney from you. I couldn't leave you. And I have spent every moment since then trying to make up for the horror that I put you through. That's why I asked you to marry me. So I can spend the rest of my life making up for what I did to you.

Nicole: Oh, my God. I'm a dead woman.

Rafe: He's gonna pay.

EJ: I love you. And you still love me.
