Nicole: Brady...

Nicole: There's no one here we know, right?

Brady: No, there's nobody here. Breakfast isn't very popular at the Cheatin' Heart. So...how did your talk go with E.J. last night?

Nicole: Not well. He said he needed time to digest something he learned.

Brady: He didn't say what?

Nicole: No. But still I since have all my limbs, I'm guessing that he doesn't know the truth.

Brady: Do you know what he was talking about?

Nicole: I-I have no idea, Brady. [Whispers] But I really--I can't worry about that right now. What's important is when he does confront you about what you said on the phone about the secret--

Brady: I know, I know, we gotta get our stories straight.

Nicole: Yeah, so let's hear it--what are you gonna say?

Brady: All right, here's what I'm gonna say. That the secret I was referring to was the fact that I fell off the wagon, that I'm doing coke again. That I was high as a kite when I called, and I thought it was you. Once an addict, always an addict--that kinda stuff, all right?

Nicole: And he will believe you--I am sure of it--and then he will trust me again and everything will be fine, back to normal.

Brady: Normal. You think anything was ever normal? Everything has always been a lie, Nicole.

Nicole: Okay, Brady, please, please don't do this!

Brady: What do you want me to say to you? What do you want to hear? That I have every faith in the world that he's never gonna find out your secret, that I have every reason to believe that he's never gonna put together that Sydney is not your kid or his kid. That when she grows up and she's five years old that she doesn't look anything like you, it's gonna be fine? Come on, Nicole.

Nicole: Okay, you know what, I can't hear this, Brady.

Brady: You gotta hear this. This is reality, I'm sorry. You gotta hear this. I will lie for you this time, 'cause I said I would. But we both know damn well we're just postponing the inevitable here. He's gonna find out the secret. It is gonna come out.

E.J.: On to something isn't good enough, Marco. I need to know every single move my wife has made since I met her--do you understand me? I need to know everyone she spoke to. I need to know everywhere she's been--everywhere!

Nicole's voice on tape: I need you...to be the friend you were for me... when I had the miscarriage.

Sami: All right. [Mumbles] Job openings. "Air traffic controller"? [Laughs] Unlikely. "Waste management"? Eew. Let's see what else they...

[Tap]

Sami: "It's like I told you weeks ago...I need to work things out for myself. I just need to get away for a while, move on, see what happens. Don't try to contact me or find me. I'll probably be unreachable anyway? I wish you all the happiness in the world. Give Allie and Johnny a kiss for me. Rafe."

[Knocking on door]

Sami: Oh. Uh... Mia.

[Scraping sounds]

[Scraping continues]

Nicole: I am so tired... of your dire predictions.

Brady: Nicole, come on. I'm just giving you--

Nicole: Do you realize... [Sighs] Do you realize that when you tell me E.J.'s gonna find out the truth it's like saying Nicole, your life is over, you should just give up.

Brady: I never said anything about your life being over, Nicole!

Nicole: And then if E.J. finds out that Sydney... wasn't our baby and that I've been lying to him forever, that would just be the end of me.

Brady: Do you intend to keep this up forever?

Nicole: E.J. will continue to believe that Sydney is our baby because he wants to believe me. He loves me. That's why, Brady, if you just...if you just stick to the plan, then everything will be fine...back to normal.

[Cell phone rings]

[Ringing]

E.J.: Marco. What have you got? [Quietly] Are you sure? Thank you.

Chad: Hey, Horton, wait up. Look, I, uh, I tried calling you last night--what happened?

Will: What, so you can rub it in my face that Mia broke up with me?

Chad: Oh, right, man, I-I'm sorry about that. That's--that's rough.

Will: Yeah, well, don't get your hopes up, okay? I know you think this is your chance to get back together with Mia... but it's not gonna happen, so just forget about it.

Chad: Dude... it already has.

Mia: I, uh...left my Chem notebook here...I think, um... last time I was studying with Will. Have you seen it, by chance?

Sami: No. But Will would probably know where it is.

Mia: Is he here?

Sami: No, he, um...he went to school already. I'm sorry.

Mia: Yeah. Right, um... I should probably get going myself. I just...you know, thought if my Chem notebook was here... sorry to bother you.

Sami: [Chuckles] Mia, wait a second. Will told me what happened with you two.

Mia: Ha. Wow. He really does tell you everything.

Sami: Look, he only told me because... he wanted my advice. He--he needed help. He...he was really upset for you. And that is the only reason he told me about the baby.

Mia: I trusted him.

Sami: And you can still trust him. He knows that I would never say anything.

Mia: That's not the point.

Sami: Will really cares about you, Mia. I know he does.

Mia: It's too late, I'm...

Sami: You're what?

Mia: I'm already with someone else.

Sami: What?

Mia: I got back together with Chad, my old boyfriend.

Sami: The father of your baby. Okay, Mia, something doesn't add up. Why don't you tell me what's really going on?

Rafe: [Weakly] Sami... Sami.

Meredith: Oh... well, I'm glad you finally woke up.

Rafe: Oh, God.

Meredith: I was beginning to worry that maybe that last blow to the head killed ya.

Rafe: What are you... doing now?

Meredith: Making sure you never see the light of day again.

Roman: Arianna.

Arianna: Oh. I was just thinking about you. Did you find anything on Meredith Hudson?

Roman: Yeah. Yeah, her story checks out. She lost her job in Florida, got back to Salem a few days ago. She's trying to raise cash by renting out the home of her deceased parents.

Arianna: And that's it?

Roman: What were you hoping to find?

Arianna: I don't know. She was acting really strangely last night. But why wouldn't she be uncomfortable with me, right? I mean, the way she feels about my brother--guilt by association.

Roman: No further word from him?

Arianna: Rafe? No. Not since yesterday. I just don't know why he would leave.

Roman: All right, well, tell you what--keep me up to date. If you hear anything...okay? But you know what? Maybe he just needed to get out of town. Listen...

Arianna: Yes.

Roman: I'm gonna let you get back to work, okay?

Arianna: Okay.

Roman: But I'm gonna keep my ears open and I promise you if I hear anything about your brother, I will call you immediately.

Arianna: Thank you.

Roman: All right, take care.

Arianna: Bye. Where are you, Rafe?

Rafe: [Whispers] Don't do this.

Meredith: A slow, painful death. It's better than you deserve.

Rafe: [Whispering] I loved her. [Exhales] I loved Emily.

Meredith: Did you love her as much as you love Sami?

Rafe: Oh, God.

Meredith: I wasn't able to save my sister from you, Rafe. But maybe I can save Sami from the same fate. I mean, that girl's been through enough already, don't you think? Losing a baby...

Rafe: No... the baby... is still... still alive.

Nicole: Just follow my lead, okay? E.J., honey? Um...Brady's here. I told him you were upset with me, uh, so he's... going to explain that silly little phone call in Paris, you know, about the secret?

Meredith: What are you talking about? Sami's baby...

Rafe: [Groans] Wasn't her...baby. Didn't die. Baby's st-still alive.

Meredith: Poor Rafe. Maybe I did hit ya in the head one too many times. [Laughs]

[Cell phone rings]

[Ringing] It's your adoring sister.

[Ringing] What on earth does she want? I'm gonna let that go to voicemail.

Arianna: Hey, Meredith, it's Arianna calling. Listen, when you get this message, can you just give-- you know what? Never mind. I'm just gonna come over to your parents' place, so I'm just gonna see you when I get there. Bye.

Mia: Why would you be surprised I got back together with Chad? I mean, he's--he's a really good guy.

Sami: Well, first of all, Will said that you hate him.

Mia: Well...yeah. [Laughs] I was mad when he abandoned me. But...now that he knows we had a baby together, it just...it-- it made us that much closer.

Sami: Mia, when did you have time to get closer to this guy? Didn't he just find out? I mean, about the baby?

Mia: Yeah. But we have such a strong connection that it was... like no time had gone by.

Sami: Mia, stop it, okay? You're lying to me about something. What are you hiding?

Mia: Nothing, okay? I'm telling the truth, I swear. Will and I are over. I'm back with Chad and... nothing can change that.

Will: You're such a liar. Mia would never get back together with you.

Chad: Oh, yeah? Why wouldn't she? We were a great couple.

Will: You treated her like dirt. I mean, she hated your guts for ditching her--not even calling her after you left.

Chad: Hey, look, we worked all that out, okay? You see, will, Mia and I had a baby together, okay? We have a bond that makes everything else seem petty. It's way deeper than anything you two shared.

Will: You have no idea what Mia and I had.

Chad: Whoa.

Will: You know, I don't know why she got back together with you, but I can tell you this. You're a moron if you think she still has feelings for you.

Chad: What, you want to start something, Horton?

Will: You're not even worth it.

Chad: Hey, Mia, it's me. Look...meet me at the pier during lunch, okay? We need to talk.

Brady: You know, maybe I should come back another time.

Nicole: No, no, Brady...you need to clear things up with E.J. He wants to know the truth.

E.J.: Yes, the truth. I'd like to know the truth.

Brady: Okay. First and foremost, I want to apologize. I didn't mean to--mean to put a damper on your honeymoon, okay? When I called, I did not know you were out of town, and I didn't mean it to cause so much trouble. Also, as Nicole told you, I was...

[Exhales] I was high at the time, E.J., okay? I had a little problem with drugs in the past, as you know, and I'm ashamed to admit I'm back on it. Started using again. And that was the secret I didn't want to come out. I knew that she knew, and I was worried that someone else knew--

E.J.: Go away, Brady.

Brady: E.J., I'm just--

E.J.: Go home. Go on, go to a little, uh... a meeting or whatever it is you do. Get out.

Brady: I just want to tell you that I think you're lucky to have her as a wife. I know that she loves you and she would do anything for you.

E.J.: Oh, I'm well aware of that. Thank you.

Nicole: [Exhales] [Chuckles] E.J., it's--it's like I said. You completely misread the situation. The secret... Brady was talking about was his drug addiction, and he was just terrified that I might... tell someone he slipped.

E.J.: I'm so sorry. [Inhaling]

[Thud]

E.J.: I am so sorry that I ever believed a word out of your poisonous, lying mouth!

Sami: Dad! Hi.

Roman: Hey! My beautiful daughter. Don't you look nice?

Sami: Oh, well, I have a job interview.

Roman: You do? Cool. All right. For what?

Sami: There's a spa down the street a bit. I was a little anxious, so I got here early. So I thought I'd wait here.

Roman: Well, you know what? I was supposed to meet somebody here, but it doesn't look like he's gonna make it. That'll give us a chance to catch up. I haven't seen much of you lately.

Sami: Yeah. Well, life's been hectic.

Roman: Yeah.

Sami: You wanna...

Roman: Yeah. Right there. How 'bout that?

Sami: Oh, thanks, Dad.

Roman: Have a seat. So tell me about this job. What would you be doing?

Sami: Look, dad, it's definitely an entry-level position. But I'm sure I'll make my way up to manager in no time.

Roman: [Chuckling] I have no doubt about that. I'm sure you will.

Sami: I have to. You know, for my kids. And for me.

Roman: Yep. I'm glad you're showing some initiative. I've been worried about you lately.

Sami: Well, you know, uh... it's been pretty tough. But I'm working my way through it, you know...every day. Um...definitely was a setback when Rafe disappeared.

Roman: Still no word from him, huh?

Sami: Oh! Actually, yeah. He, um... he emailed me to let me know that he was taking some time and he'd be gone for a while. That's pretty cold, right?

Roman: Yeah. Arianna got one of those too.

Sami: Yeah. How'd you know that?

Roman: Oh, I-I just--I was over at the pub. We got to chatting and, uh... oh, by the way, she asked me to look into the same woman you did.

Sami: Meredith Hudson.

Roman: Yeah. She's back in town.

Meredith: Rafe?

[Line ringing]

Arianna: Meredith.

Meredith: Arianna...I, uh, I got your message. You know, um... you know, now isn't a good time to come over. I'm fixing up the house, and it's a mess and I'm a mess. Can I just take a rain check?

Arianna: Um, no, you know what, I really need to talk to you right now, okay?

[Rafe moans]

Nicole: E.J., you're scaring me.

E.J.: I have a little something... for you.

Nicole: What is that?

E.J.: Well, how 'bout I show... and you tell?

Nicole: [Gasps]

Roman: Well, like I told Arianna, Meredith is here to fix her parents' house up so she can rent it out.

Sami: Maybe...Rafe talked to her. Maybe she knows where he is, but...why would he say that-- why am I doing this to myself? I've got to stop it. I-I just have to wrap my head around the fact that he is gone and...I gotta move on.

Roman: [Exhales] Sami, I'm... so sorry about that.

Sami: I'm fine. My head knows that I have to just move on, and my heart is having some trouble catching up. But it will.

Roman: I know it will. You'll get through this. You know why? Because you are as resilient as they come.

Sami: [Chuckles] I love you, Dad.

Roman: I love you too. And I'm always here for you. You do know that.

Sami: Yeah. I have to get to the job interview! I don't wanna be late.

Roman: Okay.

Sami: Thanks, Daddy. See you later and, uh, wish me good luck.

Roman: Hey, knock 'em dead, okay? Knock 'em dead.

Sami: [Laughs] Okay.

Roman: All right, see you later.

Meredith: Are you always this pushy?

Arianna: L-look, I-I don't mean to be pushy, but this is just really important.

Meredith: Uh, well, it's gonna have to wait.

Arianna: It's just gonna take a minute of your time.

Meredith: No, uh, you're not going to take any of my time, Arianna, because you're not coming over.

Arianna: I am, okay? I'll be right there.

Meredith: No! You can't!

Rafe: Ari.

Meredith: I have to go.

Arianna: I'll be right there.

Meredith: What the hell am I gonna do now?

Nicole: Where did you get this?

E.J.: Where do you think I got it?

Nicole: [Exhales] It--it's impossible. I mean, I--

E.J.: What? Did you think you got rid of all the evidence?

Nicole: Well, how long have you had this? What, are you digging through my trash?

E.J.: So we've established that's yours, right?

Nicole: Well, n-no! I mean [Stammering] You couldn't have--

E.J.: Don't worry. You're not going mad. I'm sure you got rid of anything too incriminating.

Nicole: But then...

E.J.: This... is not the one that you bought. But it got it at the same store.

Nicole: I don't know what you mean.

E.J.: You know they have a different one for every succeeding--well, you would know that, wouldn't you? It's amazing, really. Every different stage of pregnancy, they have one of these. Must have been quite cumbersome, really, towards the end, when you were wearing the ninth. Walking around all day, sleeping with it all night. [Shouts] What's that? Cat got your tongue? Where are your lies now?

Nicole: Fine.

E.J.: Oh! She speaks.

Nicole: I bought the padding... I bought it...because...

E.J.: Because... because... because, because--

Nicole: Because... a lot of women buy those things, the--the padding, okay? So when you're in your first trimester, it helps you choose maternity clothes for your second and third trimester!

E.J.: Oh! I see! I see. That makes perfect sense now. You bought that so you could fill out your maternity wardrobe--is that right?

Nicole: Yes!

E.J.: Oh! I don't know what I was thinking. That makes so much sense. So tell me this. Why were you so emotional and upset when you went there? You were almost in tears according to the sale person I spoke to.

Nicole: [Exhales] I was hormonal. I-I could have been upset about any number of things. I mean, it could have been raining outside and I forgot my umbrella! You know how fragile I was... when I was pregnant.

E.J.: Were you?

Nicole: What?

E.J.: Pregnant.

Nicole: Of course. Why would you ask me that?

E.J.: Do you know I'm so glad that you just asked me that.

[Click]

Nicole's voice: Please, Brady...you're the one who told E.J. the secret is out. You need to make up for this colossal blunder. I need you... to be the friend you were for me... when I had the miscarriage. When you were so kind and understanding. Because you know it was the only...chance I had to have a baby, the one...and only time I was going to be pregnant.

[Click]

Meredith: Well, you caught a break, Hernandez. You were about to get bricked up into this basement... and now because your meddling little sister is on her way over, I can't finish what I started. So...what are we gonna do now?

Brady: Hey. You got a minute?

Arianna: Uh...I'm actually on my way out, so--

Brady: It's--it's important.

Arianna: Okay. What's going on?

Brady: [Sighs] About yesterday.

Arianna: Yesterday. I'm sorry about yesterday. Um...you know, whatever's going on with you and Nicole, it--it's none of my business. I didn't mean to stir up any trouble, so...

Brady: You...you didn't tell anyone else about the miscarriage, did you?

Arianna: No. And I promise you I won't.

Brady: Okay.

Arianna: I shouldn't have given you a hard time about all of that. I'm actually the last person who should be judging anyone, so...

Brady: Arianna, I-I-- I know it's hard for you to understand why I'm helping Nicole, all right? I get that.

Arianna: I...I think I finally understand. I hope everything works out for you. [Softly] I gotta go.

E.J.: What, you wanna listen to it again?

Nicole: No--

E.J.: Let's listen to it one more time for good measure.

Nicole: No, no, no!

[Recorder shatters]

E.J.: Oh, dear, looks like you broke it.

Nicole: Where did you get that?

E.J.: It doesn't matter where I got it.

Nicole: Yes, it does matter. That was a private conversation.

E.J.: That is a conversation about my baby! Are you telling me that I have no business listening to that?

Nicole: No, you don't have any business, because it's not your baby! It wasn't about your baby!

E.J.: No?

Nicole: [Exhales] All right, I... yes, I had a miscarriage. But that was a few years ago. And I'm sorry that I didn't tell you, but I didn't want to bring up something so depressing when you were so happy! E.J., I didn't lose our baby. She's upstairs, our beautiful little girl. She's upstairs.

E.J.: Oh, we both know there is more to your confession than is on that recording. You lost my baby, your baby and my baby...and I don't know who that is upstairs. But you better tell me the truth about our--our daughter! Who is she, lying up there, sleeping sweetly without a care in the world? Tell me the truth about Sydney.

Sami: [Sighs] Oh, God.

Brady: Whoa! What the hell happened to you?

Sami: My job interview happened.

Brady: Job interview for what, a lion tamer?

Sami: No. No, I was actually going to an interview at a spa. Ha ha. A dog spa.

Brady: [Laughing] A d-- oops.

Sami: Yeah. I was actually doing quite well... until I had to interact with the..."clients." And that is when I met Lady Windermere... who turns out to be the most vicious, ugly, horrible teacup poodle I have ever seen.

Brady: [Laughing] Sounds like a real bitch, Sami.

Sami: Ha ha ha. A little doggie humor... I love it. You would think my experience with bitches--Kate Roberts, for one--would help me in this field, but no. No. Lady Windermere got a hold of my sweater, and she just wouldn't--and I panicked, you know? I was freaking and--oh! And the dog... went into a pool.

Brady: A pool? Did it--could it swim?

Sami: No.

Brady: Couldn't even doggy paddle?

Sami: You'd think it was instinctive. No. No, the groomer had to...dive in and get it.

Brady: [Laughing] You know, I'm--I'm listening to this story, and you didn't get the job, did you?

Sami: Real shocker, huh?

Brady: Well, you know, maybe--maybe your dog skills are a little off, especially when it comes to teacup poodles that are very horrible and ferocious, but... I can vouch for your children skills. Those are good.

Sami: Are you drawing a comparison between children skills and dog grooming?

Brady: Yeah. Come on, either way, it's all about nurturing, you know. You know what you need to do? You need to run a daycare center out of your home. You practically run one anyway.

Sami: All right, um... I do have a lot of experience with kids and babies, I guess.

Brady: More than most, Sami.

Sami: Well, I'm actually here to talk to grandma. I thought I'd tell her the story, give her a little chuckle.

Brady: You need to tell her that. Yeah.

Sami: It's good to see you, Brady.

Brady: Hey. I'm sorry that you didn't get the job, really.

Sami: Me too. You know, I'm really ready to take charge of my life. I don't need a man.

Brady: You really don't know where Rafe is, do you?

Sami: No.

Brady: You know what, um... I have some resources. You want me to look?

Arianna: Meredith. Uh, the door was open, so I-- what's going on here?

E.J.: All of this makes a sick, horrible sense now!

Nicole: No, E.J.--

E.J.: That secret that you shared with Brady...that was you had a miscarriage...but you didn't have a miscarriage years ago. You had a miscarriage last winter! You had a miscarriage the same night that you went to Dr. Baker's clinic...when you came back here and you were crying, and you told me that you'd been bleeding and that you had a close--a close call. That was the night, wasn't it? It was that night... when you were so upset on that couch, you couldn't even speak! That was it, wasn't it? Tell me. Tell me--that was the night that you had a miscarriage. That was the night that you lost our child!

Sami: You would have your people...look for--

Brady: Search for Rafe, yeah. It's as simple as that. I can't guarantee anything, but might be worth a shot, hmm?

Sami: I don't know. Don't you think it seems sort of pathetic, me having you look for some guy who doesn't want me in his life anyway?

Brady: Sami, I don't--I don't think that's the case.

Sami: Why?

Brady: Gut feeling I have. You guys were so good together. Really. I mean, just for it to end like that--it doesn't make any sense to me.

Sami: Yeah. Well, not to me either.

Brady: Say the word. I can have some people look for him. I betcha they can establish contact within 24 hours.

Sami: Really?

Brady: Being a Kiriakis has its perks.

Sami: [Chuckles] I bet it does. Uh, thanks, but you know what? Um...no. I, uh... I need to accept that that part of my life is over and it's... it's not coming back. But thanks, Brady.

Brady: Yeah.

Arianna: I don't get it. She knew I was coming here.

Meredith: [Grunts]

[Splash]

[Waves lapping]

Nicole: I didn't lose our baby. I carried her the entire... nine months. [Sniffles] And then I went into labor and... and the contractions, they... they came so fast, they--they were a minute apart right from the beginning. [Mutters] I barely made it to the clinic. And it was--it was so painful, but... but I did it. I got through it. No anesthesia, no epidural, nothing! And... and there she was, our perfect little miracle. Our beautiful little girl. E.J.... you have to know... in your heart, you have to know that Sydney is your daughter.

E.J.: Every fiber of my being... tells me that that girl is my daughter. But that's impossible, isn't it? Because my daughter is dead.

[Nicole sobs]

Carly: I didn't realize then that I married such a total monster!

Lawrence: And I married such a total bitch.

[Slap, grunt]

Carly: Stop it!

Bo: It's a separation.

Justin: Does that mean you wanna make it legal?

Sami: Grace, I'm so afraid that I am never gonna be whole again.

E.J.: She's not our biological child...is she?!
