Rafe: All right...
Sami: No.
Rafe: Food and drinks are he--
Sami: Shh. She's sleeping.
Rafe: Oh, sorry. I keep forgetting. Sleeping-baby zone. How's she doing? She doing better?
Sami: Thank you. Yeah. Her fever broke in the middle of the night, and, uh, she finally, finally just fell asleep, but she needs it.
Rafe: How are you?
Sami: Well, I'm tired, but I'm just so glad she's feeling better. She -- she gave me this big smile earlier. Ohh. But she really needs her rest, so this is great.
Rafe: She still has a doctor's appointment this morning.
Sami: Yeah, yeah, well, I called them to push it back bec--
Rafe: What?
Sami: Guys don't remember doctors' appointments.
Rafe: Wow. That's kind of a generalization, don't you think? A little bit sexist, too.
Sami: Oh, stop.
Rafe: Well, it's along the lines of, like, "guys only want one thing."
Sami: That's not true?
Rafe: Actually, that one is -- that's pretty much true.
Sami: Really? W-what one thing would that be?
Rafe: I don't know.
Sami: Yeah?
Nicole: Now, I would never, never say that you weren't worth it, but you have complicated things, little girl. Yes, you have. [Chuckles softly] No, you haven't. I have. I let dr. Baker into my life, and now I have to find a way to get him out... permanently.
Dr. Baker: [Grunts]
"To be opened only in the event of my death"?
Dr. Baker: You don't know what my life's been like these days.
You're in hot water, huh? Surprising.
Dr. Baker: Look, all right. Maybe I brought some of this on myself. But I'll tell you -- if I get killed, that bitch is not getting away with it.
[Cellphone rings]
E.J.: What?
Victor: Morning, Elvis. Just checking in to see how you slept. I know the docks can be cold and damp. Not asking after your father? Pretty much the same, I'm afraid. Did you ever hear the theory that the story of snow white was about a diabetic coma? Mm, not too chatty this morning, are we? All right, one more question, then I'll let you get back to work. When do you suppose you're going to have DiMera enterprise ready for me? Or, uh, when are you gonna sign on the dotted line? [Sighs] Or, put another way, when is your father gonna be allowed to wake up? [Scoffs] [Sighs] Elvis is not much of a morning person, is he?
Stephanie: Morning.
Philip: Good morning to you, too.
Stephanie: I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to the guy with the headset and the concealed weapon.
Philip: Sorry. I know how you hate all this.
Stephanie: He's actually quite nice. Sox fan, but what can you do?
Philip: [Chuckles] Did you sleep okay?
Stephanie: Kind of tossed and turned.
Philip: You did?
Stephanie: I made this huge, life-changing decision last night.
Philip: Is that right?
Stephanie: Mm-hmm. See, this guy is really, really cute, but talk about baggage. Anyway, he asked me to marry him.
Philip: And you accepted?
Stephanie: Well, when you balance cute with baggage... cute wins every time.
Philip: [Chuckles]
Stephanie: Ohh.
Nicole: There's daddy. There's daddy. Hey, honey. Look who it is. Hey. E.J.? Oh, my God. What happened to you?
E.J.: I'm in negotiations with the Kiriakis family.
Nicole: What? Victor did this to you? Oh, that son of a bitch. I'll tell you. I'm gonna --
E.J.: Now, sweetheart, listen, it's very moving for you to rise to my defense, but... you're not gonna talk to any of the Kiriakis family -- any of them.
Nicole: But, honey, what happened?
E.J.: They've kidnapped my father. They're holding him ransom.
Nicole: But what does victor want?
E.J.: Everything.
Philip: You make me really... really happy.
Stephanie: You too. [Smooches] [Sighs]
Philip: What's wrong?
Stephanie: Nothing big. I guess I just never imagined that the first person I would tell about my engagement would be my fiancé's bodyguard.
Philip: Well, we'll name our first son after him.
Stephanie: [Chuckles] Well, his name is Marion. We could name our first daughter after him if we wanted to. What was that for?
Philip: [Exhales] I don't know. Any girl who can go through this mess and then still learn the bodyguard's name and talk sports...
Stephanie: [Laughs]
Philip: ...I'm just crazy about you.
Stephanie: You're really cute. But you better not lose those good looks, buddy.
Philip: I thought you liked me for what was inside.
Stephanie: Mm...that too.
Philip: [Scoffs]
Stephanie: Here I am, engaged.
Philip: You know what I was thinking? We should try to make this as much as possible like you imagined. Call your folks. Ask your grandmother over to show her the ring.
Stephanie: I think that's a good idea. I'm gonna do that.
Philip: Okay.
Stephanie: Hey, you think as a special favor to me, when my grandma gets here, she won't have to be patted down?
Philip: I'll pat you down.
[Both laugh]
Victor: Oh, good morning, Stephanie.
Stephanie: Hi. Good morning.
Victor: Well, you two seem to be in a chipper mood this morning.
Philip: Yes, we are. We are engaged to be married.
Victor: Well, that was kind of sudden, wasn't it?
Philip: You approve, I hope.
Victor: Well, she's reasonably intelligent. A little combative, but I imagine...that'll wear out in time.
Philip: She's a great person, dad -- the best.
Victor: Yeah. As long as you love her, Philip.
Philip: Very much.
Victor: It's a good morning all the way around.
Philip: What does that mean?
Victor: It means that, very soon, Stefano and all the DiMeras will be neutralized, powerless, and then you and your wife can life happily ever after.
Nicole: They have your father? Wh-- come on, baby. [Gasps playfully] Let's put you in here.
E.J.: Hey, sweetie.
Nicole: Okay, honey, look, I know you're upset, but they -- they can't do anything to him. They can't. If they kill your father, they will be facing murder charges.
E.J.: They're not gonna hurt him, Nicole. They're depriving him of insulin, all right? All they have to do is dump him somewhere, and it's gonna be death by natural causes.
Nicole: Okay, E.J., I am so sorry.
E.J.: Victor gave me this... contract he wants me to sign. Hands over all of DiMera enterprises to him.
Nicole: Well, then, we're okay.
E.J.: Are we?
Nicole: Yeah. 'Cause they just made a huge mistake. They can beat you up, and they can break every law in the book, but that contract is a legal document, and you are the best lawyer ever, and you will find a way to stop him. I know you will.
Sami: Oh.
Rafe: What?
Sami: I'm freaking out thinking someone's gonna interrupt us.
Rafe: [Laughs]
Sami: Wow.
Rafe: Silly.
Sami: I'm glad you can laugh about it.
Rafe: Well, what else am I supposed to do?
Sami: Leave?
Rafe: Leave? I'm not going anywhere, Sami. Unh-unh.
Sami: Well, most guys would not be too thrilled to be... whatever it is we're doing with the woman who lived in the shoe with, like, all these kids and exes all over the place.
Rafe: So, you don't know what it is that we're doing?
Sami: Well, no, I mean, I would have called it "dating," but...dating is fun, and two people do it alone together, and they get to spend time together, and it just seems like, from your point of view, it's like we're babysitting all the time with some not-so-remarkable benefits.
Rafe: I actually like the benefits.
Sami: Yeah?
Rafe: Yeah.
Sami: So, maybe when grace is napping later, we could... nap, too?
Rafe: See, that's what I'm talking about.
Sami: [Laughs] Of course, not for too long, 'cause then I have to take the twins to Gymboree, but maybe you could have dinner with me and my sullen teenage son, who --
Rafe: Sami, would you stop? I like it. And I like watching you juggle it all, and...I like helping. What can I say?
Sami: I promise that, in the not-too-distant future, some beautiful, perfect day is gonna happen, and you and me -- we are going to be able to spend several hours alone together.
Rafe: And you know what? That's gonna be a great day. Until that day comes, why don't you sit down, okay? I got you some coffee here, and you've got fruit, and all kinds of delicious stuff, okay? Just relax for two minutes.
Sami: I love it. Thank you again for --
[Grace crying]
Rafe: Just, um...
Sami: Maybe next week. [Laughs]
Rafe: Yeah. Maybe.
Sami: [Sighs]
The Appalachian bitch. This isn't about your gambling debts, is it?
Dr. Baker: Oh, no, no, no. That's when life was sweet, and the only thing I had to worry about was somebody breaking my kneecaps.
Who the hell have you gotten yourself mixed up with?
Dr. Baker: The most determined person I've ever met in my life. She makes Stalin seem easygoing. She will not let anything or anyone stand in her way. And just guess where I am.
E.J.: You really believe that, don't you? Hmm? You really think I can handle this.
Nicole: Of course I do. I have every faith in you.
E.J.: Where's my mercenary, materialistic Nicole? I mean, I tell you that you're gonna lose everything, and you don't even blink.
Nicole: Well, first of all, I don't think we're going to lose everything, because you're gonna figure something out. And second...the money and all that -- I have lived on a lot less. Besides, E.J., It's not the money that makes me happy. It's you and Sydney.
E.J.: Yeah, well...
Nicole: What?
E.J.: ...I believe you.
Nicole: Yeah.
[Sydney laughs]
Caroline: It's like going through airport security to get in here, victor.
Stephanie: Hi, grandma.
Caroline: Hi, darling. How are you? How are you?
Stephanie: Good.
Caroline: And how are you feeling, Philip?
Philip: I'm great, actually.
Caroline: Good.
Henderson: Would madam care for some coffee, a cup of tea?
Caroline: Uh, oh, no, thank you, Henderson, I'm fine. But madam...would like to know what the hell's going on?
Stephanie: Grandma, Philip has asked me to marry him, and I said yes.
Caroline: You didn't.
Stephanie: I thought you'd be happy for me, grandma.
Caroline: Then you didn't think very hard. I think you and I should go in another room and have a little talk.
Stephanie: I'd better see what's wrong.
Philip: Mm-hmm.
Stephanie: Excuse me.
Philip: Wow. That went well.
Victor: You seem surprised.
Philip: I'll tell you what. I'm a little ticked. All Stephanie wanted to do was tell someone in her family that she was engaged. Is it too much to ask for them to act happy?
Victor: You know, there's something that you should know, Philip, especially if you intend on marrying into the family. No Brady is going to pretend anything to make you feel more comfortable -- especially not Caroline.
Philip: Well, I was thinking about Stephanie, not me.
Victor: Really? You honestly think that's what you were thinking?
Stephanie: I don't understand what you're so mad about.
Caroline: I'm not mad. I'm thrilled. I mean, I can't wait to plan this wedding. We're gonna get you a veil... and a bububububububull.
Stephanie: Grandma, I'm perfectly safe.
Caroline: As long as you stay in these prison walls, you know. Did you -- did you talk this over with your parents?
Stephanie: Of course I did.
Caroline: And they were happy? They thought this was a good idea?
Stephanie: No, they weren't exactly happy.
Caroline: Well, I wonder why.
Stephanie: [Sighs] I love him.
Caroline: Why rush to marry him? You don't have to marry him, do you?
Stephanie: N-no. No.
Caroline: Well, then why? Why are you doing this?
Stephanie: I told you why.
Caroline: [Sighs] Yes. You love him. You're handing your life -- your youth -- over to a Kiriakis.
Stephanie: That's what this is about. It's not that I'm getting married. It's that I'm getting married to a Kiriakis.
Nicole: What are you doing?
E.J.: I'm doing some legal research. If there's a loophole in this contract, it's not obvious.
Nicole: Well, you'll find whatever it is, E.J. I know you will.
[Keys clacking] This whole situation is just maddening.
Nicole: [Sighs]
E.J.: [Sighs] I mean, you tell me that...you don't want any of this. I mean, the money... I just can't help but think, "what the hell am I doing?" What the hell am I doing?! Give victor his money. Get my father. I'll take you and Sydney somewhere -- a deserted island. Anywhere. Just be. Just be a family."
Nicole: Is that what you want?
E.J.: Well, I don't want to go live on a desert island, if that's what you mean. I just want to be a family. I don't want to be a target anymore.
Nicole: But...
E.J.: I can't do that. I won't let...victor take me to my knees.
Nicole: You know how victor's always blathering on about being Greek?
E.J.: Yeah?
Nicole: Well, he's cunning, and your father is your Achilles' heel. That is your one real vulnerability. Victor's got one, too -- the patriarch thing he's got going on. And he thinks the one shot he has at immortality is in his children and his grandchildren -- the fruit of his loins, if you will.
E.J.: Do you think the reason that my father and victor keep fighting like this is because they're so similar?
Nicole: I don't know. But I just -- I thank God you're not like either one of them. Look, I'm gonna give you some space and let you figure this out, okay? But never lose track of the fact that you can win this war, E.J. [Laughs]
E.J.: Thank you.
Nicole: Welcome.
Nicole: Okay, dr. Baker, I'm gonna give you one more chance.
E.J.: What would you tell me to do?
Stefano: Elvis... you must listen to me.
Caroline: Of course I'm upset that you're marrying a Kiriakis. Philip was shot with you in the same room.
Stephanie: Grandma --
Caroline: It's not -- don't think it's an isolated incident. The security -- these armed guards are not weekend guests. This is gonna be your life. And it's not just the danger. It's the mind-set -- drive, ambition...ruthlessness. He's not gonna change.
Stephanie: What's that supposed to mean?
Caroline: Let's level with each other. We have one weird thing in common. We both fell in love with a Kiriakis.
Stephanie: Then you should understand.
Caroline: I do. I-I do understand... that deep down inside, you think you're gonna change him. You think your love is gonna make him turn his back on that life.
Stephanie: I don't want to change Philip. He's not like victor. He isn't.
Caroline: I think you're lying to yourself.
Stephanie: Then I'm really sorry -- sorry you feel that way.
Caroline: Oh. [Chuckling] Oh, no.
Stephanie: That was funny?
Caroline: [Chuckles] I could close my eyes, and I could hear your mother saying, "I'm sorry you feel that way, ma. I really am." Oh, well, I guess all of my talk doesn't make a damn bit of difference, does it?
Stephanie: No. [Laughs]
Caroline: [Laughs] Well, then, congratulations.
Stephanie: You don't mean it.
Caroline: Well, I'm gonna fake it...beautifully. 'Cause I just want you to be happy.
Stephanie: I know that, but Philip isn't like victor. I swear he isn't.
Philip: What is that supposed to mean?
Victor: That asking Stephanie to marry you when the family's in the middle of a war doesn't seem to scream "thinking of her."
Philip: You just said we were gonna live happily ever after.
Victor: Yes, well, fortunately, the war's almost at an end. I'm sure that E.J.'S at home now wrapping up all the DiMera assets and tying them up with a nice ribbon for us.
Philip: Oh, you're right. The sooner the DiMeras are eliminated, the better.
E.J.: Nicole was wrong. There's...no other way out. [Sighs]
Stefano: So many times I have regretted the fact that I did not have the opportunity to -- you know, to raise you, Elvis. I mean...but, you know, we've made up for some lost time, haven't we? I mean, we've done a lot of father/son things together, huh?
E.J.: Sure. We played chess.
Stefano: Ah, yes. What was it I said to you the first time that I beat you, hmm?
E.J.: "Always stay three moves ahead of your opponent."
E.J.: That's what was missing, though. That's what was wrong. [Sighs] You weren't one step ahead of victor.
Lexie: Well, her temperature's normal now, so it was probably nothing more than a low-grade viral infection.
Sami: Oh.
Lexie: Keep a close eye on her. If she runs a fever again, bring her back in, okay?
Sami: Definitely, definitely.
Lexie: Yeah, and you said she's eating well.
Sami: Oh, yeah. This morning, she had her whole bottle, no problem.
Lexie: She's certainly alert. Oh, look at that smile. Oh, my goodness. Um, excuse us -- excuse me one minute, okay?
Sami: Okay.
Rafe: Well, that's great news, isn't it?
Sami: I know. I'm so glad we have nothing to worry about now. Thank goodness. Right? Yeah? Yeah?
[Gasps playfully] She likes my necklace.
Nicole: Oh, this is not good. This is so not good.
Dr. Baker: Listen to me. Look at me, okay? The baby is not getting enough oxygen. I want you to get this baby out now.
Nicole: It's too late. I'm too late. It's all over now. Terrible examples of that.
Sami: Oh, I have to get out of here. Uh, tell -- tell Lexie to send the reports. I'll be outside.
Rafe: But she has...
Lexie: What was that all about?
Rafe: Oh, I don't know. No idea. Or maybe I do.
Lexie: Richard, I have some good news for you.
Dr. Baker: Oh, good, I could use some.
Lexie: Well, I'm going to release you. I just want to look you over one last time, okay?
Dr. Baker: Okay.
Nicole: [Sighs] Okay, walker, you knew this was gonna happen sometime. The only thing you have going for you is...Sami was as upset seeing him as you were, so maybe I have more time, after all.
Victor: Well, Caroline, I'm afraid we took you a little bit by surprise.
Caroline: A little.
Victor: I just want to reassure you of Stephanie's safety.
Philip: I'm sorry if she upset you.
Stephanie: No, she didn't.
Philip: But something's wrong, isn't it?
Stephanie: Not now, okay?
Victor: Ah, Henderson, your timing is impeccable, as usual.
Caroline: Thank you.
Victor: [Chuckles] Shall we?
Philip: Thank you.
Henderson: You're welcome.
Philip: Thank you.
Victor: Now, if we all have our glasses, I'd like to propose a toast.
[Loud whirring]
Stephanie: [Gasps]
Victor: Who the hell did that?
Caroline: Stephanie, are you all right?
Owen: I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't realize anyone was out here.
Victor: What, are you blind? Don't you look first?
Stephanie: Stop. It's okay. We don't need any more fighting around here.
Owen: I really am sorry, miss.
Stephanie: It's okay. It's me. I'm a mess.
Philip: You'll have to forgive her. She's engaged to be married to me, so she's a little jumpy.
Owen: [Chuckles] Well, congratulations. I hope you'll be very happy.
Victor: Hey, that's my line.
[Laughter] Henderson, give Owen a glass, and take one for yourself. This is a very special moment -- the moment when Stephanie comes into our family. To Stephanie, the newest member of the Kiriakis family.
E.J.: There was something else, something else. The second thing.
Stefano: And...what was the second thing I said to you, after you are three moves ahead of your opponent?
E.J.: Don't let him know that you are.
Caroline: You know, one good thing about victor's extravagance is fine champagne doesn't stain.
Stephanie: It's fine, grandma.
Caroline: How about you? You jumped a foot when you heard that noise.
Stephanie: I was startled. That's all.
Caroline: You're still getting over what happened to you and Philip. You really think this is the right time for such a decision?
Stephanie: Don't push it, okay?
Caroline: Okay, but I'm here to listen...whenever.
Victor: Caroline. Catastrophe -- we've run out of champagne. Would you help me with the selection?
Caroline: [Sarcastically] Oh, because I'm such an expert at such things.
Victor: I'm sorry. After all these years, I can't resist trying to get you alone.
Caroline: Oh. And that, Stephanie, is what we call Greek blarney. So, get used to it, okay?
[Laughter]
Philip: Not exactly the morning you were hoping for.
Stephanie: It's fine.
Philip: Your grandmother upset you, didn't she?
Stephanie: No, she just says what she thinks. I like that about her.
Philip: But she's not exactly unbiased when it comes to my family.
Stephanie: No, but I can't accept what she says about you.
Philip: Mm.
Stephanie: I have to decide for myself.
E.J.: Yes, there's always something -- something else. A DiMera always has one more strategy -- one more move. You wouldn't leave the country knowing that you're not coming back without...without...
Stefano: I want you to remember something, Elvis. No matter what is going on, no matter where I am -- hmm? -- I will never abandon you in spirit. I will always be looking over you. Remember that.
[Echoing] Remember that.
E.J.: Always watching over me. Yes. Always watching over me.
[Whispering indistinctly]
[Grunts]
Victor: I just thought it would be a good idea if we had a private conversation.
Caroline: Well, I -- thank you. I don't know how that's gonna change anything.
Victor: [Sighs] Caroline, there's something very important that I wanted to say, and I was afraid if I put it in the toast, you wouldn't appreciate how sincere it was. I will treat Stephanie like a member of my family.
Caroline: Well, that's kind of what worries me because members of your family tend to be on very short leashes.
Victor: In the past perhaps, but I swear to you, Caroline, Brady and Philip chose to come back to the family -- to be part of the family.
Caroline: She is so young, victor. I mean, I'm worried about her marrying somebody who... who comes from a family that lives like it is still in feudal Greece.
Victor: Greece was never feudal.
Caroline: Well, whatever you want to say. She's just... she hasn't done a lot of things yet. Philip is older, and he's made choices she hasn't even had to face.
Victor: I know, but I know Philip, too, and this is for real. He loves your granddaughter. He's not going to do anything but what she wants to do. He won't try and control her. [Sighs] If you were at troy, that horse would still be sitting outside the gate.
Caroline: Victor, we're never gonna agree, and anyway, my opinion doesn't mean a thing to Stephanie, so she's a true Brady. She's gonna do what she wants, no matter what she says. But there's something that's very important to me -- very important.
Victor: Yes?
Caroline: Stephanie believes that tony DiMera's death was an accident.
Nicole: It was.
Caroline: This war that's going on --
Victor: It is not a war.
Caroline: You look me in the eye, and you tell me...this is Stefano's doing.
Victor: He's the one that sent the guy that shot Philip. And the nurse --
Caroline: Listen. Listen to me. I need to know that this security and all these armed guards around here are because you're just defending yourself against the DiMeras, and that you're not gonna retaliate, and you're not gonna stoop to Stefano's level.
Victor: Caroline, I swear.
Stephanie: I overheard you and your father talking about the DiMeras when I came in here.
Philip: Mm, and that's what's bothering you.
Stephanie: I just finished telling my grandma that she was wrong about you and your family, and then I come in here to hear my fiancé say that the DiMeras need to be eliminated?
Philip: They tried to have me killed.
Stephanie: You know what? I remember that. I was there.
Philip: I know, I know. Okay, look -- a better word than "eliminated." The word my father uses is "neutralize." My father is trying to neutralize the DiMeras. Okay, we are trying to work out a truce. My father is trying to get through to E.J. To ensure peace. Trust me.
Stephanie: My grandma thinks it'll always be like this.
Philip: It won't. I will not let you live like that. In case you forgot... I love you. [Smooches]
Caroline: Well, I have got to get back to the pub, but I -- I just wanted to say that I hope the two of you will be very, very happy.
Philip: Happy together. Thank you.
Caroline: Yes, yes. Oh. Sweetheart.
Stephanie: [Laughs] Call me later, okay?
Caroline: I will.
Stephanie: I love you.
Caroline: I love you, too, dear.
Victor: I'll walk you to your car.
Caroline: Oh.
Philip: Okay. I have a new mission in life.
Stephanie: What's that?
Philip: To get her to like me.
Stephanie: She likes you. She just doesn't trust you.
Philip: Do you?
Stephanie: Yes.
Philip: You let me know if that ever changes. My father wonders if it was a bit selfish of me to ask you to marry me with things as they are.
[Clears throat]
Stephanie: And my grandma thinks the way things are are the way things are always gonna be at chez Kiriakis.
Philip: It won't be. Like I told you, I will not let you live like that. So, I have two missions -- I'm gonna get her to like me, and I'm gonna prove her wrong about my family. Sorry -- our family.
Sami: I cannot believe that he was there. I mean, what is he doing at that hospital?
Rafe: Sami.
Sami: And, oh, my God -- he's the only person that knows that I really had grace. If he tells anyone, they're gonna know that I didn't adopt her. Hey, would you -- That hospital is like gossip central, and Lexie -- did you even know that Lexie is E.J.'S sister? I mean, she could tell him, and then he'll --
Rafe: Sami, would you listen to me, okay? Just calm down, okay? Everything is gonna be fine. I will take care of it.
Lexie: Okay, you are good to go, but you'll need someone to drive you home.
Dr. Baker: Oh, thanks. I'll call a cab.
Lexie: Oh. Okay. Listen, you'll be stiff for a little while, but there won't be any permanent damage. And from now on, use the handrail.
Nicole: Ooh, taxicabs are so expensive and [Gasps] Unreliable.
Dr. Baker: [Sighs]
Nicole: Kind of like you. So, how about I give you a ride home, huh?
[Dialing]
[Ringing]
Yes.
E.J.: I'm calling on behalf of, uh, Stefano DiMera.
Owen: Yes, sir. What can I do for you?
Stephanie: [Laughing] No, stop! [Laughs]
Philip: My father's life is in danger. Unless you do exactly what I'm telling you to do, he's going to die.
Philip: I want an update.
He's alive...barely.
Dr. Baker: What do you want me to do?
Nicole: Get the hell out of Salem and never come back.
Rafe: Dr. Baker will not be a problem.
