Max: Ah, there we go. Right? Good. Onions, extra cheese, some more onions. It's gonna be so good. Come on, you don't go to Coney Island without having a hot dog. It's like you don't go to the pub without having mom's famous chili fries, okay? They're gonna be the best chili fries you've ever had. You do like chili fries, right?

Morgan: Oh, sure. Mmm.

Max: You so never had chili fries before, have you?

Morgan: No.

Max: Yes! So, rookie at the chili-fry thing is good. So, there's two ways to eat these -- with a fork or without a fork. I prefer the fork thing 'cause then you can get in there and get all that good stuff, you know? I mean, oh, man. Look, you got to try this, okay?

Morgan: Okay.

Max: No, it's good.

Morgan: Oh, my God. That is so good.

Max: Don't act so surprised.

Morgan: No, I'm serious.

Max: I know.

Morgan: This alone is worth the $500.

Max: What? Come on.

Morgan: Oh, no. I mean, not that you're not worth every penny.

Max: Right. Nice save. Look, I know this isn't your typical dinner and a movie or whatever, but I thought I'd do something a little different.

Morgan: First time at a racetrack -- definitely different. Nachos for dinner -- never gone that route before.

Max: And?

Morgan: And I loved every second of it, aside from my shoes being a little scuffed up.

Max: Ri-- I'm -- no, I'm really sorry about that. I should have told you.

Morgan: No, no, it's okay. I mean, most guys, they automatically think that they got to go out of their way to impress me. I mean, like my first date. He picked me up in a limo.

Max: Well, that could be fun.

Morgan: Except it wasn’t. I mean, I was mortified. He took me to this outrageously expensive restaurant, proceeded to order everything that was extremely pricey on the menu. I mean, things I could not even pronounce. And then he proceeded to insult the busboy and the waiter and the head chef.

Max: Well, I would never pick you up in a limo. It's not my style, okay? And I was a busboy and a waiter here, right here in this place. My mom is the head cook, so you can insult her to your own peril.

Morgan: Not to mention that you're currently tending bar.

Max: Well, this is me, so what you see is what you get.

Morgan: And I like what I see.

Belle: Hope, it's Belle. Uh, no, I'm not okay. Um...my dad had an accident, and he's in the hospital, and...it's bad. It's really bad. Uh, they don't expect him to... yeah, my mom's here. Thanks, Hope.

Marlena: John, darling. Can you hear me?

Dr. Berman: He's going to be out for a while. It's the morphine. I upped his dosage.

Belle: So that's it. You just pump him full of drugs. That's all you're gonna do? You're not gonna try to save his life?

Marlena: Belle. [Whispers indistinctly] At this point, there's --

Belle: There has to be something we can do.

Marlena: Sometimes all we can do...is just say goodbye.

Sami: Smile, E.J. you're getting what you want.

E.J.: I have to say I'm pretty surprised.

Sami: Really?

E.J.: Frankly, yes.

Sami: You and Stefano didn't give me much of a choice. And in case I wasn't clear, John is in there fighting for his life just to drive the point home.

E.J.: Look, my father, perhaps, but I can assure you I had absolutely nothing to do with this.

Sami: Spare me. Are you gonna move on this or what?

E.J.: Lucas needs to sign it.

Sami: He will.

E.J.: Are you sure? He was pretty adamant about not signing it earlier.

Sami: I'll take care of it.

E.J.: Good. Look, I, um...I really pray from the bottom of my heart that man gets better. And I also hope that both of our families can put all of this ugliness behind them, okay, so that we can start a clean slate.

Lucas: What are you talking about?

Stephanie: I'm gonna be sick.

Chelsea: Hey.

Stephanie: Don't ever do that again.

Chelsea: You're a little jumpy.

Stephanie: I thought you said you couldn't come because you had to do homework.

Chelsea: I finished. What are you doing? Why aren't you going in?

Stephanie: And watch that? They've been like this all night.

Chelsea: Don't tell me you actually followed them?

Stephanie: I just wanted to make sure she was getting her $500 worth.

Chelsea: Right.

Stephanie: Okay, fine. I'm a pathetic stalker.

Chelsea: Stephanie, come on. I thought I told you not to do this.

Stephanie: You should have seen her at the racetrack. She was acting like she was interested in the cars, and guess what she ate for dinner -- nachos. Can you believe that?

Chelsea: My God, what's next, deep-fried candy bars?

Stephanie: This isn't funny.

Chelsea: You're right. I'm sorry.

Stephanie: I just -- I don't get it. Morgan should have been turned off by Max's low-rent wonderland, but she's acting like she's having the time of her life.

Chelsea: My God. She might actually be open-minded.

Stephanie: You're not helping.

Chelsea: Or maybe she might even like him.

Stephanie: Okay, now, that's funny. Those two have, like, zero in common. She has to be up to something. We just have to figure out what it is.

Chelsea: Okay, sweetie, now you're really starting to freak me out.

Stephanie: I'm just trying to protect Max. Look at them. We have to save him from her.

Chelsea: Steph, did you ever think that maybe Max doesn't want to be saved?

Max: Um...you got a little... on the...

Morgan: Aw, such a gentleman.

Max: Well, you know, depends on the situation.

Morgan: Good. 'Cause you know what? Sometimes there's situations that the last thing a girl wants is a gentleman.

Max: Oh, yeah? Well, what situations are we talking about here?

Morgan: Like when you're being spied on by your friend Stephanie.

Max: What is she doing?

Morgan: Beats me, but she's been following us all night.

Belle: He has to wake up. I have to tell him that I love him.

Marlena: He will, sweetheart.

Dr. Berman: I'll give you two some privacy.

Belle: How can they do that? Just give up?

Marlena: There's nothing more they can do.

Belle: Don't say that. He might hear you.

Marlena: I know how hard this is, to see your daddy like this.

Belle: There has to be something that somebody can do. Can't you call someone? Can't you do something?

Marlena: Oh, baby.

Belle: I'm not doing it. Mnh-mnh. I'm not saying goodbye.

Marlena: We have to be strong -- do you understand me? When your daddy -- when your daddy wakes up.

Lucas: What's this?

Sami: I taped up the annulment. I'm going through with it.

Lucas: You taped up what?

Sami: Belle. Belle, how is John?

Lucas: Hey, look, um, I found Shawn. You were right. He was sleeping off the meds, so he'll be here any minute. Everything okay in there?

Belle: They don't think he'll make it.

Sami: What? What are -- what do you mean? That can't be true.

Lucas: I'll wait outside, okay?

Sami: Thank you. Just tell me what Dr. Berman said.

Belle: He said that there's nothing more they can do.

Sami: That's not possible.

Belle: He said it's too much, that the damage is done.

Sami: What? No, he's gonna be okay, sweetie. We'll make sure that mom will make sure of it.

Belle: I'm really scared, Sami.

Sami: Shh, it's okay.

Morgan: I can't believe you didn't notice her.

Max: Are you sure that was her? Are you sure that was Stephanie?

Morgan: At the speedway, in the parking lot, now here.

Max: That's so weird.

Morgan: You two used to date, didn't you?

Max: [Clears throat] Yeah, kind of.

Morgan: I think she still has feelings for you, Max.

Stephanie: Please tell me he didn't see me.

Chelsea: I don't know.

Stephanie: Is he looking right now? No, wait. Never mind. If he sees you, he might come out here. Do you have a compact?

Chelsea: Stephanie, you look fine.

Stephanie: No.

Chelsea: Please don't tell me that you're gonna go in there and do something stupid. Are you crazy?

Stephanie: I'm just curious.

Chelsea: No, Stephanie, you're obsessed.

Stephanie: I'm not obsessed.

Chelsea: Look at yourself. You don't think this is a little extreme?

Stephanie: No. I told you, I'm just looking out for him.

Chelsea: Max is a big boy, okay? He can look out for himself.

Stephanie: She's with him for laughs, okay? He's not her type, not in a million years. She's gonna use him and then dump him.

Chelsea: I know that Max is your friend, but, um...you've really got to let him go, Steph. And speaking of being dumped, aren't you the one that dumped him?

Stephanie: I didn't think he'd rebound that quick.

Chelsea: Why wouldn't he? He's a good-looking guy. He's fun to hang out with. Great personality.

Stephanie: But with little Miss Georgia?

Chelsea: Okay, what is it, like 84% of all first dates never lead to a second?

Stephanie: Says who?

Chelsea: Miss Nevada. Come on, I'm kidding. You should know from experience. Every girl has her share of loser first dates.

Stephanie: But Max isn't a loser. The way he's looking at her... What if he's falling for her?

Marlena: John? They're trying to tell me that this is it...that we have to say our goodbyes. I can't do that. You're part of me, you know. I can't even imagine... I can't even imagine you not being here tomorrow. We've always been together. Even when we weren't living together, we were together. And no matter what happened, we always found our way back to each other. I'm not giving up on us. I'm not. Not after all we've been through.

John: Hey, Doc.

Marlena: You're awake.

John: Yeah. I heard every word.

Marlena: How do you feel?

John: Never better.

Belle: How can this happen again?

Sami: I know. It's not fair.

Belle: I was just with him last week. And we were going over wedding ideas. [Laughs] And he just kept laughing and joking and saying, "Tink, whatever you do, do not play that 'YMCA' song at the reception." And now he's not even gonna be at the wedding.

Sami: Belle.

Belle: What am I supposed to tell Claire? She's not even gonna know him. He's just gonna be some stranger in family photos.

Sami: No, it's not gonna be like that because you won't let it. I know how you're feeling, honey. I know that it's hard. Our dads have been through so much.

Belle: There's just so much that he still wanted to do. He kept saying when Claire was old enough he was gonna take her to spring training -- the Cubs. And you know me. I hate baseball.

Sami: Of course.

Belle: But I was excited 'cause I'd be with him and it would be fun. He could always put a smile on my face.

Sami: You think about that. You focus on all of the great times that you have had with him...and how lucky you were to have him for so long...and what a special, special man he is. Just think about all the second chances he gave me, huh?

Belle: I want a second chance right now.

Sami: I know.

Shawn D.: Belle.

Belle: Oh, sweetie.

Shawn D.: I'm sorry. I didn't hear the phone. Thank god Lucas came and woke me up.

Belle: I'm just glad you're here.

Lucas: You did this to John. I know you did. Try to scare Sami into marrying you.

E.J.: Lucas, I was with you when the accident occurred, you and Samantha at the pub.

Lucas: Then you paid somebody to do it, or Stefano did it.

E.J.: My father -- I suppose that's possible, maybe it's even likely. But I had nothing to do with it.

Lucas: Then prove it.

Morgan: So, you and Stephanie, how'd y'all end things?

Max: Well, she kind of blew me off for another guy.

Morgan: Ow. So, who's her honey?

Max: Actually, he's not around right now.

Morgan: He left her?

Max: I'm gonna let her tell you.

Morgan: Good for you. You know, a lot of guys would be really quick to dish on their ex. Do you still have feelings for her?

Max: You don't pull your punches, do you? You're just asking all kinds of stuff.

Morgan: You don't have to answer that.

Max: No, it's fine. No, I don't have feelings for her. Not anymore.

Morgan: Are you sure about that?

Max: This guy knows when it's time to move on. Steph and I are yesterday's news. That's why I find it weird that she would care if I was seeing someone. I mean, not like seeing someone. I mean, this is totally like the charity thing that we're -- I mean, we can see -- we might if you -- I'm gonna stop talking if that's okay. That's a good thing for me right about now.

Morgan: You know, I'm having a really good time tonight.

Max: Me too. I'm just glad you bid on me, but I'm sorry you had to pay so much.

Morgan: Oh, no, it's okay. I mean, it's for charity. And you're worth every penny.

Stephanie: [Sighs]

Chelsea: Stephanie, if you still have a thing for Max, you should talk to him, tell him.

Stephanie: I do not have "a thing."

Chelsea: Then why have you spent the last half-hour outside the pub window?

Stephanie: I need to make sure she doesn't take advantage of him.

Chelsea: Seriously? Max can handle a girl like Morgan with his eyes closed. Of course, maybe that's what you're really worried about.

[Monitor beeping]

John: Hey. Where'd my Doc go? Strong, unafraid.

Marlena: I'm trying.

John: Doesn't look good, does it?

Marlena: John, it's very serious. I know you can make it. I know that you can.

John: You never were very good at lying to me, Doc.

Marlena: No. No. I know you can do this.

John: I heard quite a lot just lying here.

Marlena: Well, that's very sneaky of you, isn't it?

John: I'm glad that you're with me.

Marlena: I don't know if I can do this.

John: Yes, you can. You can do this. I'm counting on you to do this. The whole family is.

Marlena: I just got you back. I can't let you go again.

John: Shh. Do not cry. Not now. I want to take that...I want to take...that beautiful face with me the way it looked on our wedding day. And those, pretty lady, were tears of joy. We had a good run, didn't we? No regrets.

Marlena: John...Sami's outside. So is Belle. People are coming over. They need to...

John: Say goodbye.

Marlena: Yes.

John: Will you lie with me? Just five minutes won't make any difference. Just lie with me?

Marlena: Yes, yes.

John: I love you.

Marlena: I love you. Always. Always. I'll always love you. I'm right here. I've got you.

Lucas: I'm not gonna argue with you. Sami needs me now.

E.J.: I understand.

Lucas: So stay away from her. She needs to mourn with her family.

E.J.: Sure. I'll be sensitive to her needs.

Lucas: You're not gonna go anywhere near her.

E.J.: Well, we are about to be married, Lucas.

Lucas: Are you? Do you see my signature on these annulment papers anywhere?

Sami: Lucas. What are you still doing here?

E.J.: I'm concerned about you.

Sami: Go talk to Stefano before someone else gets hurt.

E.J.: Of course.

Lucas: He should be the one dying in there.

Sami: Well, he's not. And John is.

Lucas: Yeah, well, he could be.

Sami: Forget about E.J. Lucas, I just need you.

Lucas: I'm here. I'm not gonna go anywhere. I'm here, honey.

Caroline: I thought you might like some apple pie.

Morgan: Sure. Oh, thank you.

Caroline: You're welcome.

Morgan: And you know what? Max was right. Your chili fries are out of this world.

Caroline: Good. I'm glad you liked them.

Morgan: Thank you.

Max: Thank you, Mom.

Morgan: Oh, I love your mom.

Max: She thinks you're pretty great, too.

Morgan: Really?

Max: Yeah, I can tell. Trust me.

Morgan: I'm glad.

Max: Yeah. Besides, if she didn't like you, I wouldn't hear the end of it. I brought this one girl home. She had tattoos up and down her arms, piercings everywhere, a mouth like a trucker. My mom was not impressed by her one bit.

Morgan: Oh, my God. I bet Stephanie was a breath of fresh air after that one. How long did ya’ll date?

Max: Um, last year, I don't know, about a month or two, and then recently we had a couple weird encounters.

Morgan: Go on.

Max: Well, Stephanie and I, you know, had worked all summer and some feelings kind of... resurfaced. You know, we kind of walked down memory lane again. Nothing ever came of it. Besides, we find it better to just be friends. So, what about you, hmm? Are there any exes that I need to know about, huh?

Morgan: Well, maybe a few. But right now I'm 1,000% single.

Max: I was hoping you'd say that.

Chelsea: You think that Max would sleep with her?

Stephanie: Get your mind out of the gutter. He wouldn't do that. He's changed. You've seen it, too, right?

Chelsea: Stephanie, I want you to be happy, and if being with Max will make you happy, then I think that you should tell him how you feel. Otherwise, you're just gonna regret it.

Stephanie: I had my chance and I blew it.

Chelsea: You're never out of chances to make things right, Steph.

Sami: [Sobbing] If I had just gone with my gut and agreed to marry E.J., John wouldn't be in there dying.

Lucas: Forget about your gut. Follow your heart. Follow your heart. That's got to count for something, right?

Sami: I know it's not fair to you. It's not fair to us, but how many more people have to die before you will admit that I don't have a choice?

Lucas: You think John would want you to marry E.J.? Or your mom or your dad or any of the Brady’s? Come on, Sami.

Sami: Lucas, I am the only one who can end this. If something happens to someone I love -- what if something happens to will? I will never be able to forgive myself, and neither would you.

Lucas: Fine, then we'll get a bodyguard or something.

Sami: We can't spend the rest of our lives in a safe house.

Lucas: Until Stefano dies, right, that's what you keep telling me? You're gonna marry E.J. until Stefano dies? Then why don't we just get a bodyguard until Stefano dies?

Sami: Since when have bodyguards stopped Stefano?

Lucas: Your dad is the deputy police commissioner. Let him handle this for God sakes, please.

Sami: How many times has my dad ended up in the hospital? They obviously can't handle the DiMera’s. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I just -- if I had another way, I would do it in a second. But I don't have a choice.

Sami: Lucas...I'm sorry. I can't stand this any more than you can. What I do know is that I won't be able to get through this if I don't have you by my side. You are my best friend, and you're my lover, and...you are my true husband, no matter what that stupid paper says.

Lucas: I don't know, Sami. I just don't think I can do that.

Marlena: Honey, your daddy can see you now.

Belle: He's awake?

Marlena: He's awake.

Belle: Well, that's a good thing. Then he's doing better, right?

Marlena: No, Belle, he's not doing better.

Belle: What am I supposed to say?

Marlena: You say whatever's in your heart.

Shawn D.: I'm really sorry.

Marlena: Yeah. Thank you.

Shawn D.: I better call Grandma and Grandpa. They're babysitting Claire. If you need anything, let me know, okay?

Marlena: I need you to stay close to Belle. She is really going to need you.

Shawn D.: Of course, I will.

Belle: Daddy.

John: Hey, baby girl. It's okay, honey. Give your daddy a hug. [Sighs] There it is. That's what the old man needed. Where's my beautiful granddaughter?

Belle: She's fine. Shawn's grandparents are bringing her over later.

John: Tonight?

Belle: Yeah.

John: That's good. Tonight will be good. Listen...I want you to turn that little girl into a Cub fan, okay?

Belle: [Laughs]

John: My God, I would give anything to see the look on that angel's face when she takes in her first game at Wrigley Field.

Belle: Dad, don't talk like that.

Max: Ma, what's going on?

Caroline: Shawn -- he's at the hospital.

Max: Uh, what happened?

Caroline: John was hit by a car.

Max: W-- wha-- how bad is it?

Caroline: Well, they don't think he's gonna make it through the night.

Max: I just saw him this morning at the gym.

Caroline: And he asked your dad and me to take Claire to the hospital.

Max: Okay, look, I'm gonna drop Morgan off and then I'll give you guys a ride to the hospital, okay?

Caroline: Okay. Okay.

Morgan: What's wrong?

Max: Um...a good friend of the family got hit by a car.

Morgan: Oh, my God. I'm so sorry.

Max: Yeah, it's pretty serious.

Morgan: Well, don't worry about getting me home. I'll call a cab.

Max: I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you, I promise.

Morgan: No, it's okay. It's okay. Well, look, if you need to talk, call me. I'm usually up late.

Max: Thank you. You're pretty terrific. You know that?

Stephanie: I do still have a little pride left. There's no way I'm crawling back to Max. I'd look totally pathetic.

Chelsea: As opposed to what you're doing right now?

Stephanie: I am just trying to protect him. How many times do I have to tell you that?

Chelsea: Stephanie, why did you even invite me to come here? It's obvious you don't care what I think.

Stephanie: I do. Okay, let's say I go to Max and I tell him I still have feelings for him. You know what's gonna happen?

Chelsea: You guys will get together and be happy?

Stephanie: No. He's gonna get all weirded out. He's gonna worry that Jeremy's gonna come back and sabotage everything.

Chelsea: Jeremy can't sabotage everything.

Stephanie: Max is not gonna put himself in a position to get hurt again. Do you see what I'm saying? It's a lose-lose situation for me.

Chelsea: Okay, then. Why are we still standing here spying on him, hmm?

Stephanie: You hate me, huh, for making you come here? I'm sorry.

Chelsea: No, Stephanie, I don't hate you. I'm just very annoyed, okay? Mainly I'm just -- I'm worried about you.

Stephanie: You're right. This was a stupid waste of time. Let's just get out of here.

Chelsea: Hey, guys. How random is this?

Morgan: Yeah, it's quite coincidental.

Chelsea: Stephanie and I were just craving some chili fries and decided that we'd come here. So, how's the date going?

Morgan: Oh, it's good. It's really good. Um, but Max got some bad news.

Max: Yeah, um...John Black was in a bad accident, and he's in the hospital, and it doesn't look very good.

Stephanie: Oh, my God.

Chelsea: That's horrible.

Max: Yeah. I got to take my parents to the hospital, so, Steph, could you do me a favor?

Stephanie: Sure, yeah. Whatever you need.

Max: Would you mind taking Morgan back to the sorority house? I want to make sure she gets back safe.

[Machine beeping]

Belle: I'm sorry.

John: Hey. It's okay. It's okay, baby.

Belle: There's so much that I want to say to you. But at the same time, I don't even know what to say.

John: Just say that...you will promise not to forget your daddy.

Belle: Daddy, I could never.

Lucas: I can do everything you just asked me to, but...

Sami: Lucas.

Lucas: I mean it, Sami. What are we gonna do, spend a little time together here and there, you, me, and the twins? Maybe go on a couple dates? But you'll be going home to him every single night, and every single night, he's gonna be pulling you closer.

Sami: We are in control of this situation, not E.J.

Lucas: Are we? Are you sure about that?

Sami: We're not gonna let him come between us.

Lucas: You don't think it's strange that you just said that?

Sami: Lucas.

Marlena: It's time.

Lucas: It's time. I'm here for you, okay?

Morgan: Hey, don't feel obligated. I mean, I'm okay taking a cab.

Stephanie: No, no. It's totally fine. I was planning on heading to the house anyway.

Morgan: Terrific.

Max: Thanks, Steph.

Stephanie: Hey, we're sisters.

Chelsea: I have to go tell my mom about John. I'll see you guys later.

Stephanie: Okay.

Morgan: Look, Max, thanks again for a wonderful evening. I'm just really sorry it had to end like this.

Max: Yeah, me too.

Morgan: I hope your friend will be okay. Call me, okay?

Max: Count on it.

Morgan: [Sighs] Thank you for doing this, Stephanie. What a great way for us to get to know each other better.

Stephanie: Yeah. Great.

Caroline: Here we are. Here we are, honey. Claire's here, John. Hi, John. It's Caroline.

John: Hi, Caroline. Where's my chowder?

Caroline: It's coming.

Belle: There's somebody who wants to see you.

John: There she is. There she is.

Belle: Come here, baby. He wants to say bye-bye.

John: Oh.

Belle: Give Grandpa a hug.

John: Oh, Claire black. A second generation. I'm gonna miss you so much. Thank you.

Nick: He always brings complaints, and complaints bring cops, and cops aren't your friends.

[Knock on door]

Jeremy: Oh, damn. Someone did call the cops.

Morgan: Just so you know, an Alpha Chi Theta does not take another girl's guy.

Bo: Who ran John down?

Stefano: Accidents happen.

Bo: It was no accident.
