Days of Our Lives Transcript Wednesday 5/1/02 Provided By Suzanne Jennifer: You know, Hope, I think it's really generous of you and Bo to give all these things to the Reibers' new baby. Hope: Well, J.T. is going to be that baby's big brother, isn't he? Jennifer: Hope, what -- what can I do for you? Hope: Just help me get this stuff together. Maybe it'll help me keep myself together. Jennifer: Give me all this. Hope: Thank you. Jennifer: Let me take this. Bo: What did they do to keep kids quiet before they invented all these gizmos? I mean, there were times we just needed a moment of peace. Hope: Did you find the baby monitor? Bo: The baby m-- no, I didn't. Hope: Oh, gosh. I brought it down this morning. I -- it just disappeared. I don't know what could have happened to it. Shawn-D: Do you want a chicken nugget? J.T.: No. Shawn-D: No? J.T.: No. Shawn-D: No? You don't have much of an appetite, do you? That's all right. Neither do I. [Knock on door] Shawn-D: It's not time yet. Come here, buddy. Shawn-D: Oh, it's you. Yeah, come on. Come on in. Julie: Hi, darling. Doug: Hi, guys. Jennifer told us about all the reporters camped out in front, so we figured we'd outfox them, slip in this way. How's everybody doing? Julie: Oh, how do you think they're doing, Doug? This is so wrong. Shawn-D: Grandma, don't cry, okay? Julie: You're an extraordinary kid, you know that, Shawn? You're so -- you're so strong. Shawn-D: No, I'm not. If you start crying, then I'm going to start crying, and I don't want my brother to see me lose it. Maggie: Hey, Doug, how are you? Jennifer: Julie, hi. Hi, Doug. I thought I heard your voices in here. Doug: Yep. Hope: Oh, Daddy. Doug: Oh, princess. Maggie: Thanks. Shawn-D: I'm going to go take J.T. in the living room. Julie: That's a good idea, sweetie. Roman: I can't imagine anything rougher than what you and Hope are going through. Bo: Hope and Shawn need me to be strong, so I can't fall apart. But I'm barely making it. Barely. Roman: Well, you don't have to be strong in front of me, all right? John: Come on, guys. [Knock on door] John: Just leave everybody the hell alone, will you? Come on. Roman: Hey. Please, come in. Marlena: Oh, my goodness. John: It's a zoo out there. Roman: Hey! Back off! Have some respect! John: Hey, save your breath, Roman. They don't know the meaning of the word. Shawn-D: What are you doing here? Bo: Hey there, buddy. Simmer down. Shawn-D: Don't take him. Bo: You're a little hot under the collar. John: Look, the last thing I want to do is upset the family any more, so we'll just leave, all right? Bo: No, no, no, no, no. That's okay. This is my fault. With all the excitement with J.T. here, I, um, didn't tell Shawn you were coming by. Did I? Shawn-D: You invited them? Bo: Yes, I did. Shawn? Your little brother here was named for this man -- John Thomas your mom picked those names for a reason. We wouldn't have had all this time with J.T. if it wasn't for him helping your mom out when he was first born and awfully sick, and I was in Ireland. Huh? So we owe him a debt of gratitude. John: No, you don't, Bo. Bo: Yes, we do. Here you go. Listen... you helped save Hope's life, rescued her out of that burning building when we were in Europe. You've done an awful lot. No matter what's gone down between the two of us, I owe you for my family. He has a right to be here. Yeah. Shawn-D: Hey. Bo: We want you here with us. John: Thanks. Marlena: Ha ha. John: Hey. I like that outfit you got there, kid. You look real cute. Bo: Yeah? You want to hold him for a second? Hmm? John: If it's all right. Bo: Yeah. See Uncle John? John: Hey. Ooh! Hey. Oh, you're getting heavy! Ha ha ha ha ha. Oh-ho, you're getting big. You're growing up on us. Yes, you are. Marlena: Yeah. John: Ha ha ha ha. Marlena: Shawn. Belle doesn't know that we came by here today, or the reason. She was in school by the time we got the call from Jennifer. Shawn-D: You don't have to talk to me. I know you hate me for hurting Belle. Marlena: That's not true. We don't feel that way. We love you. We all do, and we're -- we're sorry you have to go through all this. Shawn-D: Like that helps. Bo: Shawn. Is this how you want J.T. to remember you -- angry, yelling, telling off people who care about you and our family? Shawn-D: I can't help how I feel. Bo: You can turn those feelings into something good, for your brother and for your mom. I know you can. Maggie: Hello, Marlena. Marlena: Hello. Hi. Hi. Jennifer: Excuse me. I'll take that for you. Marlena: Oh, that's great. It's just -- it's -- Jennifer: Okay. Thank you. Marlena: I hope it's all right that I'm here. John felt he needed me. Hope: Of course. I'm glad that you're here. And thank you for whatever it is that you brought. Thank you. Marlena: Well... Jennifer: And, uh, I wanted you to know that Abby and Gram made these cookies for you, and Abby wanted you to know that she put all of her love into every single one of them. Hope: I'm sure she did. Thank you. [Knock on door] Hope: It can't be them. It's too early. Caroline: Hello, darling. Hope: Hi. Shawn: We haven't missed the little guy, have we? Hope: No, no. Of course not. Uh, he's in the living room, actually, with, uh, with Shawn. Shawn: Oh, bless their hearts. Marlena! Oh, it's good to see you here. Hope: Uncle Mickey? I don't blame you. I hope you know that. Mickey: I wanted so much to spare you and Bo this day. Hope: I know. Love you. Maggie: You did everything you could. Mickey: Ahh. Did my best to delay the darned thing, but when it came right down to it, the law was very clear, and... Maggie: I don't know how they're going to bear it, Mickey. Bo: Thanks for calling, Victor. I'll tell Hope that you were thinking of us. All right, bye-bye. Shawn: Now, listen, it's all right. It's all right. I mean -- ha ha -- I got the best of it, didn't I? Married to you for all these years, and then helping Bo grow up as part of the bargain, too, huh? Caroline: God was looking out for me the day I met you, Shawn. Shawn: Well, may God look after our family today. Caroline: Yeah. J.T.: [Coos] John: What? Ha ha. What did you say? You know, he's calling you "brother"? Shawn-D: Yeah. Yeah. Come here, buddy. Roman: How long did it take you to teach him that? Shawn-D: Oh, I don't know. How long did we work on that? Just every single morning when we woke up, every single night when we went to bed. Right? Can you say "brother"? Hey. Hey, look at me. Say "brother." J.T.: Brother. All: Ha ha ha ha ha! Shawn-D: Hey, is this your blue car? It's one of your favorite cars, isn't it? You have been such a good boy today, you know that? Maggie: Ha ha ha! Jennifer: What you giggling at? Hope: How's Gran doing? Julie: She had to close her eyes. Hope: Today's going to be so stressful on her. Julie: On all of us. Julie: Darling, why don't you show Bo that wonderful book you made? Bo: Hey, hey, what's this I hear about a book? Hope: Well, it's just, um... it's all these wonderful pictures. Bo: Oh, yeah? Hope: Yeah, it's just everything I could remember about J.T., starting with the day he was born. Bo: Oh, wow. Hope: I thought I'd give it to Glen and Barb, so that that way, J.T.'s first years wouldn't be a total loss. Bo: What do we have here -- recipes? Hope: Yeah. Bo: What? Hope: Well, it's J.T.'s favorite things -- Cherry Jigglers and Mac and Cheese. And you know how he loves his animal crackers. Bo: And here we have words to a -- everybody knows this song! Doug: Well, what's the song? Maybe I know it. Hope: "The Wheels on The Bus," but it's -- there's too many verses. I can't remember them all. Marlena: I can never recall what comes first. Is it the windows going up and down or the wipers going swoosh-swoosh? Maggie: Windows. Julie: Oh, the windows. Caroline: What a great bunch of dads, huh? Shawn: And grand-dads. Caroline: Yes! Maggie: Would you like to go see your Grandpa Doug? Bo: Grandpa Doug! Look who's here. Here you go. Maggie: Here. There you go. Here, looky here. There you go. Yeah! Ha ha ha ha ha. That's it. That's it. Ohh... Doug: Try this. Whee! Maggie: Whee! Yeah! Hope: It must have been so hard for you, Daddy -- having to be both father and mother to me. Julie: Well, Grandma helped a lot. Doug: And you. Bo: Well, you all deserve a prize for teaching Hope how to be such a loving and caring mother 'cause she's the best. All you got to do is look at this guy. Huh? Isn't that right, buddy? Doug: Yeah. Bo: Isn't that right? Doug: Say good night not goodbye you will never leave my heart behind like the path of a star I'll be anywhere you are in the spark that lies beneath the coals in the secret spot beside your soul keep my light in your eyes say good night, not goodbye yes, say good night [Sobs] Oh, I'm going to miss you so much, little buddy. Maggie: Roman? Roman: Can you believe those reporters out there? Maggie: No. You know, sometimes the public doesn't have a right to know. Mickey: Mm. Tell that to the newspaper publishers that are cleaning up at Bo and Hope's expense. Roman: Yeah, well, my guess is that Lexie leaked those stories. Mickey: Huh. Probably right. I get the feeling that Stefano's daughter is willing to do just about anything she can to keep her kid. Maggie: Well, I feel for anybody who loses a child. Oh, Mickey, Hope only has less than an hour with her baby now. I don't know how she's going to stand it. Roman: By making every minute count. Caroline: Hi. How's Jan feeling? Shawn-D: Oh, she's good. I just brought her some of Gran's cookies. Caroline: Oh. Well, your parents tell me that you're to be congratulated. Pepperdine -- you've been accepted! Shawn-D: Why did they have to go and tell you that? Caroline: They're proud of you, and so are your Grandpa and I. Shawn-D: Nobody's proud of me anymore, so you don't have to pretend, okay? Shawn: Hey, listen, don't go talking to your Grandmother like that. Shawn-D: I'm sorry. Shawn: You don't tell us that we can't be proud of our grandson... the college boy. Shawn-D: I'm not a college boy anymore, Grandpa. Shawn: Well, why do you say that? Shawn-D: I changed my mind. I'm not going to college. Caroline: What? Shawn: Oh, I see. What are you going to do -- join a Rock 'N' Roll band? Shawn-D: Look, college is a place for people who have a future. I don't have a future, not anymore. Caroline: Shawn! What kind of example are you setting for your little brother? Shawn-D: He's not my little brother anymore, okay? J.T.'s not going to be around, he's not even going to know who I am, so what difference does it make what I do? Caroline: Oh, now, I can't believe in my heart that Glen and Barb are going to cut all contact with your family. Even if they do, J.T.'s going to come of age someday. When he comes knocking on your door when he's 18, what do you want him to find, huh? A successful, happy man -- a real role model -- or a loser who lets life pass him by? Oh, Shawn, come on. Don't give up on yourself. Don't turn your back on your faith and your family. Hey, we're all here for you, and you just stand with us on this hardest of days and we'll all get through it together. Jennifer: Excuse me. Have you ever treated anyone going through the same thing? Marlena: Well, I have, I have. I'm afraid there's tremendous pain and guilt, no matter which side you're on. Jennifer: Hope and Bo are being so brave. Marlena: That's a Brady family trait. It's also a Horton trait to have lots of courage. Your grandmother shows us that all the time. Jennifer: Yeah. I don't know what I would do without her, especially right now. Marlena: Excuse us for a second? Jennifer: Yeah, absolutely. Sure. John: It brings back some sad memories of your own, doesn't it? Marlena: You never do get over the loss of a child, but I'm so grateful for the life that I have now -- my family, the love. Marlena: How are you? John: Fine. We all have to be for Bo and Hope. Mm-hmm. Marlena: They're getting hit from all sides, aren't they? John: Mm. Marlena: Losing J.T., finding out about Isaac, Shawn bringing that girl home. With all that going on, I hope they're strong enough to stand up to it. Doug: Whoa! Shawn: [Laughing] Caroline: Oh, jeez. [Clock ticking] Maggie: Would you like to spend the next bit of time alone with J.T., just the four of you? Mickey: Without all of us hanging around here. Hope: No, we want you to stay. Bo: Yes. We want our family with us. We need our friends. Hope: That's right. We need you more than ever. Shawn: Caroline and -- and I talked on the way over about what we could do to make this day easier. Some of us are deeply angry with God right now for allowing J.T. to be taken from this family, but as my wife reminded me, we have so much to be grateful for. Will everyone join hands as we offer up a prayer of thanks? Shawn: Thank you, Lord, for the blessing of John Thomas Brady in our lives. All of us here have loved the hours that we've been with the little guy, and now, today, J.T. is going to a new family. Doug: It's a lot to ask for us to be happy for them, isn't it? Caroline: Well, everybody in this room, younger or older, can remember a day when God seemed to be asking the impossible of us. For Shawn and me, our faith got us through that. Of course, faith isn't so fashionable these days, but... when your heart is breaking, faith is the rock you cling to. Shawn-D: How can I have faith in a God who's letting my brother get taken away? Caroline: That's what faith is, Shawn. It's believing in a power greater than us when we can't explain what's happening or to see the reason or the logic. Shawn-D: What do you mean, reason? There's nothing logical about this. Glen can't give J.T. a better life. He can't love him more, and he can't take any better care of him. Caroline: I think it's hard for someone so young to understand. The longer you're in the world... J.T.: [Babbles] Shawn: [Chuckles] Caroline: The more you come to see there's an ebb and a flow to life, and, of course, some of the most precious moments are all about the children and the beauty they bring us every day and the laughter and the tears, sometimes both at once. J.T.: [Laughing] Caroline: But as deeply as we love our children, we can't hold onto them. In the end, love is about letting go. Sometimes we're granted years and years with our children, and sometimes a child is given to us just for a brief moment. Ask yourself this, Shawn -- if you had known in the beginning that your time with J.T. would be short, would you have turned your back on him? Would you have refused to love him to spare yourself the pain you're feeling now? Shawn-D: No. Caroline: No. Maggie: Mickey, I think we all need to hear that reading that you did at church on Sunday. Mickey: Whoa, boy. Hope I can get through it. Maggie: Oh, you can. You can, honey. Mickey: "If God is for us, who, then, can be against us? He who did not spare his own son but gave him up for us all -- how will he not also graciously give us all things? For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future nor any -- any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God." Maggie: Or the love of each other. Julie: Amen. [Knock on door] [Voices shouting] [Camera shutters clicking] Barb: I, uh, know we're a little early. I hope that's okay. I figured it'd take a while to get the baby's things together. Barb: Um, is all this stuff his? Bo: Yeah, some of it's his right now. Some of it's stuff that he's grown out of. You know, clothes, et cetera. You're welcome to take it for your new baby. Barb: So nice of you. Gee, I, uh, wonder if all this stuff is going to fit in the car. What do you think, Glennie? Glen: We'll make it fit. Thanks for thinking of us. You're really good people. Bo: Um, so, you going to make the trip in one day or what? Barb: Oh, no way. Iowa's too long a drive. We're going to take our time, stop for a picnic lunch Tomorrow, make it a fun road trip, right, hon? Roman: Well, uh, why don't I start getting this stuff out to the car? John: Yeah, I'll give you a hand with that. Roman: All right. Jennifer: And I'll make sure that the reporters just stay out of the way, all right? Roman: Can you open that door? Jennifer: Yeah. Barb: Did you see that baby swing? From what I hear, we're going to need that. Shawn-D: No, you're not. J.T. grew out of that about a year ago. Barb: I meant for the baby I'll be having in a few months. I'm sure he'll just love it. Shawn-D: It's a boy? Barb: Yeah. Yeah, Glen didn't want to find out, but I'm not good at waiting, so we'll have two sons. Shawn-D: J.T. is going to have another brother. John: Excuse me. Barb: Oh, wow. What a cute little trike. It looks brand-new. Shawn-D: Yeah, it is. We were going to give it to J.T. for his birthday. Barb: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Carol: Maybe we should have done the transfer at the agency. Hope: No, no, I, um... we wanted J.T. to be here, in the home that he's known. Glen: Look, I just want to tell you, um... everything you're doing, all these wonderful things you're giving us -- it means a lot. Barb: It sure does. We'll never forget it okay? Hope: Every day that J.T. has been in our lives has truly been a gift. We still feel that way. But for you, it was another year without your son. All of the memories that we have as a family are memories that you missed out on, and I know what that feels like, too. Hope: Uh... let's see, what can I tell you about this amazing guy over here? Well, he learned to climb the stairs this year by himself. We were scared to death, of course, but, uh... he's got some speed now, so if you have stairs in your house, just... I'm sure you'll be careful. Oh, he knows how to throw a ball. He learned how to throw a ball. Even though the book said he can't do it 'cause he's too young, what can I say? He's -- he has an amazing arm, this little guy.. Oh, and grass -- he's not afraid of grass anymore. Remember when we used to take him into the back yard? Do you remember, Bo? He'd cry 'cause he didn't like -- he didn't like the feeling, the prickly feeling on his feet, but he's over that now. He... Hope: I don't know what else. I don't know what else. Bo: Oh, um, there's something here. This, uh... Hope kept kind of like a diary of, um, J.T.'s doctor visits. Uh, there's also reference books and web sites for F.A.S. Barb: Thank you. Bo: Yeah. Barb: I'm going to keep this handy, okay? Carol: I've, uh, told Glen and Barb they can call the agency if they have any questions, if they -- if they need anything... Hope: They can call us. They can call us. Bo: Yeah, anytime. Whatever you need. We'll be there. Barb: Okay. Glen: Thanks. We appreciate the offer of, uh, financial help, but we're going to be okay right now. Barb: Yeah, my -- my Dad, he hooked Glen up with a good job. Got good benefits, we'll be around family... Glen: And, uh, looking around here, we can see that family means a lot to you, too. Um... can I hold him now? Bo: Come here. Yeah, come here. Bo: Here you go. Yeah. Barb: Hi. Hey, buddy. Hi. J.T.: [Coughing] Hope: Bo, the nebulizer. Help me find it, please. Bo: It must be out in the car. Roman: Hey, Bo, I'll help you. Hope: Next drawer down. Jennifer: The next one down? Hope: Next one down. Down there. Bo: Got it. Right here. Jennifer: Oh, we've got it. Hope: Oh, thank God. Marlena: Here. Why don't you let me do that? Hope: Marlena, thank you. Glen: Shh, shh, shh. Marlena: Oh. Well. Look at him now. Glen: Barb and I took infant CPR, and they taught us to flick his foot like that. Barb: Hey, buddy. Marlena: He's -- he's fine. He's just fine. Bo: Oh, thank you. Hope: Let me see. Hey, J.T., you okay, sweetheart? Huh, sweetheart? Yeah, you're fine. Thank God. Thank you for knowing what to do. Caroline: Bless you, Glen. Glen: I just want to say something to all of you people. J.T. owes his life to the Brady's. I mean, without Bo and Hope and Shawn here... I might not have my little boy right now, and I know that. Excuse me. Barb: You know, if Glen had to miss J.T.'s first years, he's grateful that J.T. had such a wonderful family to love him and to get him this far in life. He is, okay? Glen: I promise you we're not going to let him forget what you've done for him. Barb: And you know what? I know Iowa's not exactly a hop, skip, and a jump, but you guys are always, always welcome to come and visit. Glen: We mean it. You're a part of his life. Hope: I was waiting for the right time to, um, give you something. Hey, big guy. I guess this is it. Here you go. Glen: It's okay. Bo: Hope put this baby book together for you. Barb: Oh, wow. That is so sweet, so sweet. Hope: It's all the great moments that you missed out on this past year. There are also some -- some photographs -- actually, a lot of them, in here from before you knew J.T., uh, you know, sort of fill in the blanks. Barb: What an adorable baby. Glen: Thank you, but we're not going to take this. Bo: Hope was trying to show you a little bit of what you missed out on. Glen: That's exactly why I can't take that book. Look, I'm not stupid. I know how rough this is going to be on all of you. I want you to have it so you can take a look at the pictures and... know how much this little guy loves you. Alice: That's very kind of you. Julie: Grandma, I was just coming to check on you, darling. Alice: Oh, I'm all right. Mickey: Come on in, Mom. Come on in. Alice: Hope... darling, I had to be here for you, and for J.T., of course. Hope: Thank you, Gran. Alice: Now. Mickey: Mom, come sit down. Alice: Yes, yes, of course. Hope: Are you sure you want us to keep this? Glen: Positive. There's just one more thing. Um, about his name... Shawn-D: My brother's name is J.T. Glen: I think I want to keep it that way, but I wanted to clear it with your mom and dad first. There's been a lot of stuff in the papers and the TV lately about some stuff that happened in the past with you, but I see that you're here today, so... I guess you worked your problems out amongst yourselves. Glen: Would it be okay if we kept the name that you gave him? Shawn-D: It's okay with me. Bo: Yeah. Yeah, I think that -- that would be best for you, huh? Best for you. Glen: That settles it, then. Hear that, buddy? You're going to be John Thomas Brady Reiber. Hope: I don't know if we told you this, but the Thomas is after my Grandfather Dr. Tom Horton. Boy, I was looking so forward to telling him all about what an amazing man his great-grandfather was. Hope: He's still inspiring to our family today. Glen: J.T.'s going to love hearing all your stories about Dr. Tom. You can start the next time you see him. I got a bunch of stories I want to tell him about my Mom and Pop, too, but, um... they're gone right now, and, uh... they'd love this little guy. Um, Bo and Hope have, uh, our address in Iowa, so, please, all of you, feel free to write to J.T. and let him know about all your doings. He's going to have the biggest extended family on the block, that's for sure. Carol: I think it's -- Bo: Yeah, yeah. You be good, buddy. Grr. Shawn-D: Hey. It's going to be okay. I'm going to write to you, okay? And when you get older, you can write back. J.T.: Car. Car. Daddy. Shawn-D: Come here. Come here. Give your brother a hug. Shawn-D: Your new baby is going to have... a great big brother. Glen: He learned from the best. Hope: Hey, big guy. You're my little angel. You know that. Hey, I don't want you to be sad when you're away from Mommy, okay? Because Mommy's always going to be with you. You're always going to be right here, in my heart. I promise you. Hope: I think it's better if you just go. It's better for J.T. if you go quickly, please. Bo: Yeah, uh, why don't you go out the back? Then you don't have to hassle with that crowd out front. Hand me your keys. I'll have your car brought around. J.T.: Bye. Hope: Bye, J.T. Glen: Sorry. Hope: I love you, honey. Mommy loves you, J.T. J.T.... I love you, honey. Hope: Oh, my God. He's gone. He's gone, Bo.
