Bill: Katie, what is it? What is it? Is it your heart?
Katie: No, it-- it's the baby. It's--I... I think it's a contraction.
Bill: Are--are you cramping?
Katie: U, I-I-I think I'm going into labor. (Grunts)
(dance music playing)
(knocking continues)
(music continues)
(music stops)
Steffy: (Sighs)
(knocking continues)
Steffy: Coming. Whoa.
Thomas: Indian or Mexican?
Steffy: (Sighs) I'm not hungry
Thomas: What, bad day?
Steffy: Did mom call you and tell you to come over?
Thomas: No. You know I don't like to eat alone.
Steffy: So nothing's going on with Caroline or Hope?
Thomas: Nope. Right now, I'm all all yours.
Steffy: I heard Caroline was at the photo shoot with Hope. That must have been awkward.
Thomas: Yeah, it's okay. I smoothed things over.
Steffy: You know, you can only rely on your charms for so long. Eventually, you're gonna have to make a choice, Thomas.
Thomas: (Sighs) Speaking of choices, didn't Liam already make his? I saw you two at the wedding. Why you still living here?
Liam: You know, a deadline's a deadline, Conrad. And this isn't he first one you've missed, you're on probation. It happens again, you're done. Go! We're done!
Liam: (Sighs) Hi, Taylor.
Taylor: Liam. I was hoping, uh, I could have a minute.
Liam: You want to know what's going on with me and your daughter?
Taylor: Yes. (Sighs) But now that I'm here, I'm also kind of curious about what's going on with you.
Katie: Something's wrong. It's too soon.
Bill: Okay. Okay. I-I'm gonna call doctor.
Katie: (Breathing heavily I'm scared, bill. (Sobs)
Bill: I know, baby. It's gonna be okay. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you or our baby.
Katie: (Sniffles)
Bill: Come on, come on, come on, let's go.
Katie: I--
Bill: Come on. I-I got you. I got you.
Katie: Oh, Bill.. Bill. (Groans)
Bill: You okay? Okay. Okay. Breathe. Breathe.
Katie: (Breathing heavily)
Bill: Come on. I got you. I got you.
Steffy: Don't change the subject. I was asking about you and Caroline.
Thomas: No, I did not come here to be grilled about my love life.
Steffy: Okay. Fine. You lay off me. I'll lay off you.
Thomas: That's fine. And just--everything's okay, right? I mean, you'd tell me.
Steffy: Yeah, yeah, of--of course, I would tell you, if I even knew what to say.
Thomas: What does that mean?
Steffy: Sighs) Liam's just been a little difficult to read lately.
Thomas: Wait, so you two haven't talked about your future?
Steffy: Um, sorry we haven't talked at all since the wedding. I don't know. Maybe he's just going through some things.
Thomas: What, so you two aren't together?
Steffy: No, no, no, no. Not yet, no.
Thomas: But you will be? He--he's coming back, right?
Steffy: (Sighs)
Liam: Your daughter is very important to me.
Taylor: Have you talked to Steffy today?
Liam: No, it's been a little hectic today. (Clears throat)
Taylor: You're throwing yourself into work.
Liam: Yeah. You know, the magazine doesn't run itself so...
Taylor: So is that your priority now?
Liam: I have a lot of priorities, Taylor.
Taylor: So getting over Hope is one of them?
Liam: Look, I care about Steffy very much.
Taylor: I know you do, Liam. You're a good man. I don't believe that it is ever your intention to hurt anyone.
Liam: Thank you for saying that. But it's not... (sighs) it's not something I need to hear. I mean, I-I'm focusing on the present and doing what needs to be done now both at the office and in my personal life. I'm just--I'm not looking back.
Taylor: Well, is that because you don't want to... (sighs) or because you can't bear it?
(elevator bell dings)
Bill: Hey, hey, a little help with the wheelchair. My wife's having contractions. Thank you. Come on.
Nurse: Well, how--how many minutes apart?
Katie: Another one.
Bill: I got you. Okay.
Katie: (Grunts)
Nurse: How many minutes apart?
Bill: I-I-I-I don't know. I don't know. She--she didn't have one in the car.
Nurse: What's your name?
Katie: Katie Spencer.
Nurse: Did her water break?
Bill: No.
Nurse: When did the contractions start?
Katie: It's too soon.
Bill: Can you do something?
Woman: I mean, we--
Dr. Meade: Mr. Spencer, I'm Dr. Meade, the attending. Dr. Caspary is in surgery. She's finishing up. She'll be here soon. We should probably get right to labor and delivery.
Bill: Uh, wait, wait. Labor and delivery? She can't have the baby yet.
Katie: No, no, I can't.
Dr. Meade: Your wife and baby need to be put on monitors right away.
Bill: It's not time.
Dr. Meade: I understand what you're saying--
Bill: No, you don't understand. This is a high-risk pregnancy. My wife had a heart transplant. She needs more help than you can give her, and she needs it now.
Katie: (Breathing heavily)
Steffy: I can't tell you what you want to know, Thomas.
Thomas: I just want to know you're all right.
Steffy: I will be, whatever happens with Liam and me.
Thomas: He's coming back, Steff.
Steffy: Well, he's not breaking records, that's for sure. Look, I just-- I-I thought it would be better this way, you know, healthier, not jumping back into something right after Hope. I just thought it would happen faster.
Liam: No. No. N-no! The-- Dave, that is not how we do things around here anymore. Just-- just get the thing on my desk first thing in the morning, okay? Thank you. Son of a... (sighs)
Taylor: Hope wouldn't give you another chance, so now nobody else gets one?
Liam: Wow.
Taylor: I'm sorry. That was a little direct.
Liam: No, uh... (scoffs) no, I mean, you--you-- you've go a point to make, so make it.
Taylor: I guess--yeah-- I'm just a little surprised. Steffy had told me that you had made some changes.
Liam: Yeah, well, Spencer publications has high standards. It's my job to make sure that we live up to those standards. Sometimes that means getting tough.
Taylor: That's an interesting choice in words, "getting tough."
Liam: Look, I'm not here to hold people's hands. I have a magazine to put out.
Taylor: (Sighs) Liam, it's not like you've done anything wrong. It isn't unusual to want to armor yourself after you've had a significant loss. There are many ways that people deal with grief.
Liam: I'm not grieving.
Taylor: It seems to me like you--you have feelings of anxiety and--and regret and maybe some detachment. I also see some anger, like there's, um, this darkness about you.
Liam: What is that? What is--what are you--darkness? What darkness?
Taylor: There's a change in your personality.
Liam: Look, Taylor, if all you're tying to say is that I'm walking around with a dark cloud over my head... (sighs) then yeah, may be. There's a lot going on lately. But my personality hasn't changed. I'm taking control of my life, but I'm still me. I am still the same guy that I've always been.
Taylor: Liam, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with what you've been doing.
Liam: Good. Then why are we talking about it?
Taylor: I'm here out of concern.
Liam: Is this about Steffy, hmm? You're worried about Hope and me? Because I'm trying to put that behind me. In any case, it doesn't seem like I have much of a choice, so...
Taylor: Well, I can tell you one thing, Liam. It isn't going to go behind you. If that's all you do, it's going to stay right there. It's-- it's no going anywhere. It's gonna stay right in the back of your mind. (Sighs) it is like grieving a death.
Liam: (Sniffles)
Taylor: Let it go.
Liam: (Chokes) (sobs)
Taylor: You've got to get to a place and let it go.
Liam: (Sniffles)
Taylor: I know. I know you want to... detach. I know. I know you want to put up barriers. I know that.
Liam: (Sniffles) (sobs)
Taylor: But I want you to believe me when I tell you that it is true-- when one door closes, another one opens... maybe something better.
Liam: (Sighs)
Thomas: You know, you're doing the right thing.
Steffy: Thomas, I'm not doing anything.
Thomas: Yes, you are. You're waiting to see how things shake out.
Steffy: Have you met me? Really? I am not a patient person.
Thomas: I know. I just don't think you should feel bad if Liam wants to take it slow, okay? I means he's actually taking it seriously this time.
Steffy: Oh. Hope's not taking it slow. What? She's giving all these public press conferences, and she's kissing you. And Liam, he's tied up in knots, because he's trying to satisfy her. He's beating himself up trying to rise to these impossible standards.
Thomas: (Sighs)
Steffy: And you know it's not fair. Liam deserves to be happy. He really should just be enjoying his life, and he's not. Now he has a whole batch of other expectations on top of him, and it's not healthy for him. It's not good for him. You know, honestly... I'm afraid it's not good for us.
Katie: It's too soon. I'm not ready. (Sighs)
Nurse: Doctor.
Bill: What is it?
Katie: Is it the baby?
Dr. Meade: No, the baby's fine. There's no distress there. But, Katie, you need to try and remain calm. Your heart rate is elevated, and we need to get that number down.
Bill: Give her drugs.
Katie: No, no, they can't. They can't give me drugs.
Dr. Meade: The beta blockers we'd normally use to control the heart rate are much too dangerous for the baby. Katie, look, you need to just remain calm. Your water hasn't broken yet. These contractions, they might subside on their own. You just need to stay calm, okay?
Katie: (Sighs)
Dr. Meade: Keep an eye on her for me. The transplant heart can't regulate itself the way Katie's heart did. If there's too much adrenaline, it might skyrocket out of control if it gets above 140, we will need to give her the beta blockers, perform an emergency C-section. If we don't get her the medication in time, or even if we do... (sighs)
Bill: What?
Dr. Meade: Surgery on someone with an unstable heart rate is very risky.
(Bill remembers)
Bill: I am afraid. Have you ever heard me use that word before? I am afraid that it could kill you. And if it doesn't kill you and it only weakens you, and our child grows and thrives, and then in a few years, you die... I am afraid that I will feel hatred toward my own kid.
(Back to the present)
Bill: That's not going to happen.
(Heart monitor beeping)
Bill: Katie, the baby's okay...
Katie: (Sighs)
Bill: And you're okay.
Katie: Oh. Oh, god, no. Oh, no.
Bill: Come on. Come on. Listen. Listen
Katie: (Whines)
Bill: Breathe. Breathe, baby. You can do it.
Katie: (Whines)
Bill: Come on, you can do it.
Katie: I can't- I can't do it. I can't do it.
Bill: Look at me. Look at me.
Katie: (Breathing heavily)
Bill: Yes, you can do it. You can do it. Come on, sweetheart. Stay with me. Yeah. There you go. There you go.
(Steffy remembers)
Steffy: What is this place?
Liam: Spencer corporate retreat.
Steffy: Oh.
Liam: Oh.
Steffy: Well, it's very charming.
Liam: (Chuckles) yeah, charming.
Steffy: Yeah.
Liam: Yeah. I've seen pictures of it in my dad's office.
Steffy: Well, we could stay at a hotel. I mean, I don't- I don't mind.
Liam: A hotel? Well, you know my dad. Why stay in a hotel when you have an entire house and staff at your disposal?
Steffy: Well, you know what? We're gonna have to tell those staff to go home, because I'm gonna be your maid, chef, and gardener all rolled in to one.
Liam: Wow. Really?
Steffy: Except I don't clean, cook, do dishes, or trim hedges.
Liam: Uh-huh. Uh-huh-huh. So tell me, what is it you do exactly? Wow, I-I just walked right into that one, didn't I?
Steffy: Yeah. Yeah, you did.
(Knock on door)
Steffy: Please don't tell me you forgot what I think you-- Liam. Hi.
Liam: Okay to come in?
Steffy: Yeah. Yeah. Perfect timing.
Liam: Your, uh... your mom came to see me at the office today.
Steffy: Oh, you know, um, well, the--the thing about my mom, actually, she, uh--
Liam: She's a smart lady.
Steffy: Yeah, but she doesn't always know what's right for everybody, and--
Liam: When one door closes, another one opens.
Steffy: What?
Liam: That's-- that's what she told me.
Steffy: Oh.
Liam: Yeah.
Steffy: Well, like I said she's a-a brilliant woman.
Liam: (Chuckles)
Steffy: Oh, uh, knock, knock.
Liam: What--
Steffy: Who's there? Me.
Liam: Uh...
Steffy: Yeah, the person who's been telling you this, this whole time...
Liam: I--
Steffy: But you--you listen to my mom and not me?
Liam: I'm--oh! Whoa! Oh!
Steffy: What's the matter with you, huh?! No, no, no, no, no. What's the matter with you, huh?
Liam: Gee, hey, oh! Noogie! Noogies! No noogies!
Steffy: I should throw you off my balcony.
Liam: We have an anti-noogie--you're...
Steffy: (Laughs)
Liam: (Chuckles)
(heart monitor beeping)
Katie: (Breathing deeply)
Bill: Why is she still having contractions?
Katie: That one wasn't so bad.
Bill: You said they'd stop.
Dr. Meade: Right now your wife's heart rate is my first concern.
Bill: There has got to be something you can give her.
Katie: No, no, nothing that will hurt the baby.
Bill: There has to be a safe drug that you can give her to stop labor.
Dr. Meade: Not for someone with Katie's history
Katie: He's right, bill.
Bill: So there's nothing you can do?
Dr. Meade: Look, we're doing everything we can. We just gave her some steroids to help the baby's lungs mature just in case we need to deliver.
Bill: You said that wouldn't happen.
Dr. Meade: We need to be prepared.
Bill: (Sighs)
Katie: (Sighs)
Dr. Meade: I know you're anxious, but you cannot let her see that. We need to keep her heart rate below 140. If anything gets above that... (sighs)
Katie: Ooh. Oh, god.
Bill: Katie.
Katie: Oh, another one.
Bill: Already?
Katie: (Groans)
Dr. Meade: The contractions can be irregular.
Katie: (Whines)
Bill: All right, then, Katie, you've got to calm down.
Katie: (Sobs)
Bill: You've got to breathe. Come on. Come on. Look at me.
Nurse: Her heart rate's rising, doctor.
Bill: Look at me. Look at me.
Katie: (Breathing heavily) (sobs)
Bill: There you go. Now breathe.
Nurse: It's still climbing, doctor.
Bill: Breathe, Katie. Deep breaths. Breathe. You've got to calm down. Come on. Come on now. To slow your heart rate, you've got to slow your breathing. There you go. Breathe.
Katie: (Groans)
Bill: Deep breath, Katie. Breathe through it. Come on. Look at me, baby. Come on now.
Katie: (Sobbing)
Bill: You've got to calm down, Katie. You've got to calm down. You can do it. Breathe. Breathe. That's it. Thattagirl. That's right.
