Brooke: Tell me, what's wrong?
Hope: This is all really sweet, Mom, but...
Brooke: You and Liam had a fight.
Hope: No... (Sighs) Liam is... wonderful and loving and supportive.
Brooke: But you're really unhappy. You need to talk to somebody.
Hope: I don't think talking will help. (Sighs)
(Computer keys clicking)
Bill: What are you doing here?
Liam: It's my office. What are you doing here?
Bill: It's my building.
Liam: Touché.
Bill: I was dropping this off on your desk, which I didn't expect to see you sitting at, because I thought you would be off at the beach house in conjugal bliss with the fair maiden who has stolen your heart, who would no longer be a fair maiden.
Liam: Anybody ever tell you you talk like you expect to be quoted?
Bill: You know, I'm told that I'm not the most sensitive guy in the world, but, uh, I am sensitive enough to see that you are... less than overjoyed.
Stephanie: You are seriously considering getting married again?
Eric: Absolutely.
Stephanie: (Sighs)
Eric: Look, why not? Maybe just celebrate our history together.
Stephanie: (Chuckles) Why don't we just celebrate our divorces? There are more of them. (Laughs)
(Door opens)
Gladys: (Sighs)
Stephanie: Oh God.
Gladys: So here's your new marriage license. (Laughs) All you gotta do is sign. You're wearing that?!
Stephanie: Well, please. (Scoffs)
Eric: Gladys, I'm afraid we're not ready.
Gladys: Who are you kidding? What are you waiting for? We are gathered here today to unite in marriage the loving hearts of "Queenie" and, uh... what was your name again?
Eric: Gladys, please.
Gladys: How much time do you two think you have to think things over?
Eric: Gladys, I'm afraid that, uh, Stephanie's not really that enthusiastic about being married to me again.
Gladys: Well, I need the money. Come on, Queenie.
Stephanie: (Laughs)
Liam: If I seem a little off, it's probably from lack of sleep.
Bill: Yeah, I'm not buying what you're selling.
Liam: What am I selling? I'm not selling anything
Bill: You know, when you dream about something for so long...
Liam: (Scoffs)
Bill: And it ends up leaving you... unfulfilled, you die a little bit inside, don't you?
Brooke: Honey, talk to me. I know you had all these special plans-- the candles, the flowers.
Hope: Mom.
Brooke: You're going to have to say something. Did you make dinner for Liam last night?
Hope: No. No, we didn't get around to dinner. (Sighs) I got here first, you know, and I-I decorated the house.
Brooke: Yes, and it's so beautiful.
Hope: (Sighs)
Brooke: Liam must have been impressed by the trouble you went to.
Hope: He was.
Brooke: So he walked in...
Hope: And, um, it was everything that I dreamed it would be. He couldn't take his eyes off me. We didn't say anything, really. You know, we--we didn't have to. And it was so amazing. I mean, the-there were actually fireworks. (Chuckles)
Brooke: I'll bet.
Hope: No. No, there were--there were fireworks going off on the beach somewhere.
Brooke: Then what?
Hope: Then... (Sighs) it wasn't what I thought it would be.
Bill: So then do you want to tell me what happened?
Liam: Hope and I had our first night together. It was beautiful. Not perfect, but you know, still kind of magical.
Bill: That's what I like to hear.
Liam: You know, the--there were fireworks on the beach, and I couldn't figure out why. You didn't have anything t with that, did you?
Bill: Boy, I could score a lot of points taking credit for that, couldn't I?
Liam: (Chuckles) Yeah.
Bill: So why did you come into work this morning, or at all, for that matter?
Liam: I don't know. I just figured Hope needed some time to adjust.
Bill: To her new home.
Liam: That's right. (Sighs)
Bill: And what do you need time to adjust to?
Liam: (Sighs)
Hope: (Sighs)
Brooke: It was your first time, Hope.
Hope: Yeah.
Brooke: So it didn't turn out the way you expected?
Hope: No.
Brooke: Well, sometimes when we imagine something, it's different when it actually happens.
Hope: I wasn't. I wasn't the way I thought I would be.
Brooke: Honey, be patient with yourself. This is a new experience for you.
Hope: Okay, but how do-- how do you let go? How do you... relax when somebody's touching you? You know, touching parts of you that have never been touched?
Brooke: Well, for me, it's just a-- you know, it's a good feeling to be close to somebody, to be intimate. It's wonderful.
Hope: (Sniffles) And what if it's not wonderful? (Sniffles) What if it's not right? I mean, how do I tell him that something isn't right? (Inhales shakily) There were things that I wanted to say, you know, but I-I-I couldn't say it.
Brooke: You just have to talk, like you normally would. Be comfortable and know that you two trust each other. He just wants to know if something feels good or... doesn't feel good.
Hope: (Sighs)
Brooke: I don't know. Just give me an example. You're not gonna shock me. I mean, for instance, what did you want to say to Liam?
Hope: (Sniffles) To stop.
Gladys: Come on, Queenie. You're not one to be living in sin. Do you, Eric, take this woman, and if not, will you feed her anyway?
Stephanie: (Laughing) Oh, my God, this is like a French farce! Oh, how do answer this?
Eric: No, it's not. It's not a farce t.
Stephanie: You are not taking her or this seriously.
Eric: Oh, come-- you know, you and I have had very, very serious weddings in the past with all the trimmings.
Stephanie: (Sighs)
Eric: I don't care about that. What I care about now is that you, and I have come to a very serious place in our lives...
Stephanie: (Scoffs)
Eric: And you don't want to cross that threshold with me.
Stephanie: No, you just want to have a big fat-numbered wedding anniversary.
Eric: (Scoffs)
Stephanie: I'm not gonna get married for the sake of a party.
Eric: Look at me! I want to celebrate our lives together-- the good, the bad, and the ugly, all right? There is no story of my life on this earth without you.
Stephanie: (Scoffs) Ask him how many other wives he's had.
Eric: Ask her why I have gone to other women.
Stephanie: (Singsong voice) Unh, unh, unh, unh, unh, unh.
Eric: Because I was a boy then. I'm a man now. You're the woman I want-- you.
Gladys: Stephanie, will you take this man for better or for worse, or for richer and for all he's worth?
Stephanie: Stop. Hold it. Hold--just one moment, please. Just... Eric, some people might have said that I was a terrible wife, but the truth is, I was the best wife for you. And some people might even say I was a terrible mother, but I wasn't. Those children all turned out okay. So what is the point to all of this? I'm not going anywhere. On the other hand, I can't always be sure of you and the assurances that you've made before. So...
Eric: I've said it before, and I'll say these words again, because I've meant t every time I've said it-- I do. Do you?
Stephanie: (Sighs) Okay. You've worn me down. I do.
Eric: (Chuckles)
Gladys: Okay. By the power vested in me by the State of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife, and you may kiss the bride.
(Mendelssohn's "Wedding March from 'Midsummer Night's Dream" playing)
Gladys: Congratulations. And you owe me 30 bucks.
(Music stops abruptly)
Stephanie: (Laughing)
Eric: Give her the money. Give her the money.
Stephanie: (Laughs)
Liam: You know I'm not comfortable talking about this.
Bill: Son, it's obvious things didn't work out as well as you would have liked.
Liam: (Chuckles) Yeah. It was her first time, you know? She was tense. I did my best to make it right for her.
Bill: Look, you're not alone in that bed. Hope has responsibility, as well. She's gotta bring something more to the party than just her first-time jitters.
Liam: (Sighs) She tried.
Bill: Well, maybe that's the problem. She's trying too hard.
Hope: (Sighs)
Brooke: I don't understand. Why did you want to stop?
Hope: It didn't feel right. It still doesn't. (Sniffles)
Brooke: What doesn't?
Hope: Liam is married to somebody else.
Brooke: Honey, they filed for divorce.
Hope: (Sniffles) I know they did. And I thought that it would be fine. I thought that I-I could overlook the waiting period... (Sighs) And we could start our lives together, but... I guess I-I just--I didn't know that it would feel so... wrong u-- until last night.
Brooke: (Sighs) Well, I don't see this as a matter of right or wrong.
Hope: No, it's wrong for me, I mean. No, you know, I knew it was a mistake talking to you about this. You know, we don't see this in the same way.
Brooke: Okay. Would you like to talk to somebody else?
Hope: Like who?
Brooke: (Sighs) I have a good friend. She publishes, and she's a relationship counselor, and you could ask her a lot of questions. She'll give you a different perspective.
Hope: A total stranger? I...
Brooke: Sometimes it's easier, believe me. (Chuckles) You'll like her a lot. You do want to make this right for Liam, don't you?
Hope: Yeah. (Inhales and exhales quickly) Yeah. (Sniffles)
Stephanie: Oh. (Sighs) What the hell did we do?
Eric: (Sighs) Well, not much has changed, has it?
Stephanie: What?
Eric: The marriage, I mean.
Stephanie: Oh.
Eric: You know, I mean, you know, now that we're married, we're legit again. We're not living in sin any longer. We're not, uh, "Shacking up," as you said.
Stephanie: (Laughs) Well, why would it matter so much to you that we got married again?
Eric: It didn't matter so much to you did it? How come? I mean, you were so... reluctant.
Stephanie: (Sighs) Hurt your feelings? I'm sorry.
Eric: I believe you mean that. (Chuckles) Thank you.
(Glasses clink
Stephanie: I do
Eric: Cheers.
Stephanie: You know what I realized when we were... (Laughs) Standing there and I was listening to her prattle on? My God... (Sighs) We have a lot to bicker about.
Eric: Oh, yes, we do.
Stephanie: It takes a lifetime to amass that much material.
Eric: (Chuckles) That's right, it does.
Stephanie: Do you think the kids', uh, feelings will be hurt, because we didn't invite them to the wedding?
Eric: (Sighs) Maybe. But I don't care.
Stephanie: (Laughs)
Eric: I'm glad we did it anyway.
Stephanie: (Laughing) Well, I'm kind of sorry in one way that they didn't come to this one.
Eric: Yeah, it was a little unorthodox, wasn't it?
Stephanie: You haven't answered my question.
Eric: Oh, about why getting married again was so important to me?
Stephanie: Yeah.
Eric: Yeah?
Stephanie: Everybody we know or who knows us or knows about us...
Eric: Hmm.
Stephanie: They--they know whether we were married or we weren't married? I mean, what--what did it-- what did it matter?
Eric: It mattered to me, Stephanie. It mattered to me.
Stephanie: (Sighs) Here we are.
Eric: Yeah. Newlyweds...
Stephanie: Again.
Eric: (Chuckles) I love you, Stephanie.
Stephanie: I've always loved you, Eric.
Eric: (Chuckles)
Liam: You know, Dad, I kind of like it when you don't tell me that everything I'm doing in my personal life is wrong. I'm not saying it's gonna last, but... I like it.
Bill: (Chuckles) I'll take that under advisement.
Liam: Good.
Bill: All right. Let's do some work since you are here today. Justin drew up a couple of contracts and... Just like that?
Liam: Just like that.
Brooke: Thank you for seeing us at such a late notice. You're such a dear friend.
Dr. Barton: Yeah. Oh, please. My pleasure.
Hope: (Clears throat)
Brooke: Oh, this is Hope. Dr. Barton.
Hope: Yeah, hi.
Dr. Barton: Hello, Hope.
Hope: It's nice to meet you. Thank you for seeing me.
Dr. Barton: Mm-hmm.
Brooke: Hope's engaged to a wonderful young man. His name is Liam, and that's why we came here to see you today.
Dr. Barton: Okay, well, why don't we let Hope tell us why she's come here today? (Chuckles) And--and, Brooke, as you know, therapy sessions are private, so...
Hope: Oh, um, you know what? Actually, she can--she can stay.
Brooke: Are you sure, honey?
Hope: Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure.
Dr. Barton: Um, very well, then.
Hope: Okay.
Dr. Barton: Why don't you have a seat?
Hope: Okay, thank you.
Dr. Barton: So... why don't you tell me about this wonderful young man?
Hope: (Clears throat) Okay. Um, well, my mom's right. You know, he's... Liam is everything to me. He's, um, he's--he's just-- he's so good and kind and really patient with me. He's just--he's amazing in every way, and--and I want to be everything that he needs me to be. Um, and last night, we--we made love for the first time. And I wasn't... everything that I wanted to be. All right, and you know what? It--it wasn't his fault or anything like that. It wa--it was me. I-it was--it was all me. It was just my anxiety with the situation, I guess. Um, I can't lose him. I can't hurt him. You know, his happiness means everything to me.
Dr. Barton: And you want to be happy...
Hope: Yeah.
Dr. Barton: With him.
Hope: Yeah, absolutely. Yes.
Dr. Barton: Well, if that's what you both want, then I don't have to hear any more to assure you that that will happen, okay?
Hope: Really? You--you-- okay, you think you can help?
Dr. Barton: Yeah, I do, and I am really glad that you came.
Hope: (Chuckles)
Dr. Barton: I mean, I-I know. This is a very big deal to you, you know? An intimate new relationship.
Hope: Well, actually, it's-- it's my first intimate relationship.
Dr. Barton: Well, intimacy is not easy for everyone. You know, sometimes we have to learn to, um, let, uh, people in that closely, hmm?
Hope: Okay. (Chuckles) Okay, so-- so I'm not some kind of freak who...
Dr. Barton: No.
Hope: (Chuckles)
Dr. Barton: (Chuckles) No, honey, you're not. You are a beautiful, sensual young woman, and feeling about Liam as you do, loving him as deeply as you do, whatever the problems, we'll deal with them. We're gonna resolve this, okay?
Hope: Okay.
Dr. Barton: And you will have a wonderful, fulfilling relationship with the man you love.
Hope: Okay. (Inhales and exhales deeply)
Brooke: (Chuckles)
