(Ventilator hisses)

Ridge: Good-bye, Dad.

(Machines beeping)

Ridge: (Sobs)

Brooke: Oh, my God, Ridge! What is it? What happened?

Ridge: Dad was suffering. It's not what he wants, Brooke.

Brooke: No. You--you didn't! Ridge!

Dr. Patrick: What's going on here?

Woman: The ventilator-- it stopped working!

Ridge: I turned it off. Stop. Don't do that. He doesn't want that.

Dr. Patrick: We need to keep him alive.

Ridge: Just let him go!

Dr. Patrick: It appears the patient is stabilizing. What were you thinking, Mr. Forrester?

Ridge: My father was in pain. He doesn't want to be that way. He doesn't want--

Brooke: (Gasps)

Dr. Patrick: Your father can't speak.

Ridge: He doesn't want to have anything to do with that machine anymore.

Dr. Patrick: You are not in power to make that decision.

Ridge: Brooke, I'm telling you, he spoke to me. He told me what he needed.

Brooke: Ridge--

Ridge: He told me what he needed.

Brooke: Sweetheart, come on. Let's let them work.

Ridge: I did what was right.

Brooke: Ridge...

Ridge: Call the family. Tell them to meet in Dad's office. He needs our help.

Katie: Wow.

Marcus: (Chuckles) So the rumor's true?

Katie: What rumors?

Marcus: Well, I heard you were pretty good at this.

Katie: Oh, yeah. I guess I used to be.

Marcus: Show me.

Katie: (Chuckles)

Marcus: Well, unless-- are you not supposed to? Be--on account of, um--

Katie: Maybe next season.

Marcus: Okay.

Katie: So L.A. seems to be agreeing with you.

Marcus: Yeah. I guess it does. My adoptive parents, you know, well, they did their best, but now that I became a part of this family, it just finally feels like I have a real home.

Katie: Well, we're all really happy you're here with us. You're the best thing that ever happened to my sister. It's remarkable how quickly you two have bonded.

Marcus: Well, maybe you'll get to have a kid one day yourself, get to see what it's like.

Felicia: A ventilator? Oh, my God. (Sniffles) Does Mother know?

Ridge: Where is she?

Thorne: I don't know. She's not answering her cell phone.

Felicia: Well, that scares me.

Rick: What, so Dad can't breathe on his own anymore?

Ridge: His coma's getting deeper. He's on life support now.

Felicia: He's getting worse so fast.

Thorne: Yes, but he can still pull through this.

Brooke: Bridget told us it's extremely unlikely.

Rick: So what are you saying, Mom? He's just gonna die?

Donna: No, he can't. I won't believe that.

Ridge: No one imagined this day would ever come, but it has. When I saw Dad on that ventilator, I knew he would never want to go on this way. That's why I did what I did.

Thorne: What did you do, Ridge?

Ridge: I turned off the damn machine.

Felicia: What? No, Ridge! No!

Donna: Oh, my God. Oh, my God, you killed my husband! No! No! (Sobbing) tell me you didn't. Tell me you didn't!

Donna: God, you killed my husband?

Brooke: Stop it. Stop it!

Rick: Donna!

Donna: How could you possibly--

Brooke: Stop it. He's not dead, Donna, he's not.

Donna: But he turned off the ventilator.

Bridget: What? Ridge!

Brooke: Okay, the emergency alarms went off, but it was only moments before they turned them back on again.

Bridget: I don't care, Mom. What?

Rick: Ridge, you cannot be making decisions like this, all right? He's our father, too. We didn't even know that his condition had changed.

Thorne: How could you take this decision upon yourself, Ridge?

Ridge: None of you were in that room with Dad at that moment listening to that damn machine pumping air into his lungs. I know this is gonna seem very strange to all of you, but Dad reached out to me. I heard his voice just as clear as day. He was pleading with me to help him. He's tired of fighting. He's ready to let go, and he wants us to let him go. That's why I turned the ventilator off-- because it's what Dad wants. I know it is.

Felicia: (Sniffles)

Ridge: Bridget, tell them what you told your mother and me-- that Dad's gone. He's not coming back.

Bridget: The prognosis isn't very good.

Rick: (Sighs)

Bridget: The longer he stays in the coma, the less likely it'll be that he ever wakes up.

Donna: No. No, but people-- they wake up. No, they recover.

Bridget: I know, Donna. That's true, but--

Donna: No. No, I have been doing research, and no--no case is ever hopeless.

Bridget: Listen to me. Dad's brain was deprived of oxygen during and since the heart attack. Even if there is a turnaround, which of course, I want-- I know we all want that, but-- (sobs) I don't think it's gonna happen, Donna. There's just been a lot of damage. Even if he does wake up, he won't wake up my dad. (Sniffles) he's not gonna be the man that we all know and love.

Ridge: Dad doesn't want to go on like this. That's why we have to make a decision together right now.

Donna: No, Ridge. No. I will put a guard at Eric's door, but you are not gonna do anything.

Ridge: Donna, we all love him. Nobody wants to say good-bye. But Dad needs our help.

Donna: He needs to live. Yes, this is a terrible setback, but give them a chance to--to get past it.

Ridge: You're on a mission to save Dad's life. But I'm on a mission to honor Dad's soul.

Marcus: I'm real glad you're coming back to work, Katie. We need all the help we can get, especially Mom.

Katie: "Mom"?

Marcus: Well, yeah, that's who she is.

Katie: I knew it took you a-- a while to make that connection.

Marcus: Yeah. You see, I grew up thinking my mom gave me up for adoption because she was ashamed of me. Now I know I was in the wrong. No way did I get what it was like for her. You know, ever since I met Donna, she makes me feel loved in a way no one else has. You know, she says any child is a blessing, no matter what. I believe that now. I'm sure you do, too. Well, that's it!

Katie: You've got a great smile.

Marcus: (Laughs) Well, I got a lot to smile about these days.

Katie: Would that include a girl, maybe?

Marcus: (Chuckles)

Katie: Aha. Anyone I know?

Marcus: Steffy.

Katie: Oh, boy, a Forrester. You like to live dangerously.

Marcus: Well, you know, me and Steffy just want to end this feud with our families, you know...

Katie: (Laughs)

Marcus: Find a way to bring them both together. They all want the same things. They just can't always see it.

Katie: Well, I wish you all the luck convincing them of that. (Laughs)

Donna: I'm not giving up on your father, Ridge.

Ridge: We don't want to either, Donna, but it's time. We have to let him go.

Felicia: (Sighs)

Thorne: Has Dad ever made his wishes known?

Bridget: There's no formal directive. But you should all be aware that Dad designated Donna to make all decisions medically on his behalf.

Felicia: Donna?

Donna: Look, he trusted that I would know what he wants. Felicia, I-I don't need a piece of paper. I-I know Eric. I hope you all support me on giving him more time to come back to us.

Ridge: I got this from the hospital administrator's office.

Thorne: What is it, Ridge?

Ridge: It allows the doctors to take Dad off the ventilator with Donna's signature.

Donna: No. Ridge, no!

Ridge: Donna, please. This is damn hard for me, too, but it's something we all have to decide on now. We all love Dad. Nobody wants to say good-bye, but his suffering has to end. Where is his quality of life? Would any one of you want that kind of an existence?

Ridge: So why would you want that for him? Dad's done so much for all of us. Now it's time for us to do what's right for him...

Ridge: To allow Dad a dignified ending to a very extraordinary life.

Donna: (Sobbing)

Bridget: (Sobbing)

Ridge: Bridget, tell us where you stand. Tell us what's in your heart.

Bridget: Well, medically, I know that we can keep him alive as-- well, for a really long time. As a doctor, I want to do just that and see what happens.

Bridget: But as his daughter, I have to remember everything that he's said to me, and I have to agree with Ridge. I just don't think that Dad would want to live like that.

Ridge: Thorne, Dad's life, the way he'd want to live it, is over. We can end his suffering, and we can all be there together for him.

Felicia: I know what it's like to cheat death. I'm a walking miracle, for God's sake. But my miracle is not just that I survived cancer, it's that I actually have a quality of life. I don't want Daddy to die. But I don't want him to be a vegetable either. I don't know. I-I know he wouldn't want a living death. (Sobbing)

Rick: Dad has always been my role model, my hero. (Clears throat) look, if we're gonna lose him, we have to lose him with dignity.

Thorne: (Sighs) I-I-- man, how can we make this decision without talking to Mother, Ridge?

Ridge: Of course we're gonna talk with Mother. I just want to make certain that this is what we all agree on here to happen.

Felicia: I'll agree to whatever Mom agrees to, okay?

Ridge: Loving Dad the way she does, I'm sure she's gonna realize what needs to be done. She wouldn't want Dad going on this way.

Felicia: But I don't know how she's gonna be able to say good-bye to him. (Sobbing)

Donna: My heart goes out to all of you. I understand how-- how devastating this is. I mean, this is the hardest decision to make.

Donna: I cannot, and I will not give up on my husband. I have been reading about so many people who come out of comas, and they work hard, and they do therapy, and they reclaim their lives. I believe that Eric is gonna be one of these people. He's going to come back to us. He has to.

Donna: (Sighs)

Katie: Well, I should get back to work. I've got a lot of things to go over with Donna, that is if Owen will grant my an audience. He seems to be very protective of her.

Marcus: Well, not anymore he isn't. I sent him home packing.

Katie: Really? Why?

Marcus: The guy is trouble, Katie. And after the deal he tried to pull with Felicia and trying to seduce my mom to break up her marriage? Unh-unh.

Katie: Well, at least he confessed everything to Donna. I-I-I'm sure she feels very alone right now. I don't know. Maybe he's not so bad.

Marcus: Well, it's too late, Katie. He's gone, and he ain't comin' back.

Ridge: Everybody wants to believe what you said is true-- by some miracle, Dad will come back to us. But it's not gonna happen, Donna.

Donna: No.

Ridge: If you love him as much as you say you do--

Donna: No, I won't. I won't let him go. I won't. He's not gonna die. He's not gonna die. There's still some hope, Ridge.

Ridge: Donna, it's a false hope, though. Every day we wait, every day we leave him on that ventilator, he's suffering. He's in this limbo area. What a horrible place to be.

Donna: What about your mother? What about-- what has she said?

Ridge: Mother loves him enough to let him go.

Ridge: This is the signature the doctor needs. Let him go in peace, Donna. Let this be the last loving thing you do for him.

Ridge: Sign it.

Donna: (Crying)

Ridge: Do it for the man you love. Set him free.

Owen: Donna? What's going on here?

Donna: Owen, what-- what are you doing?

Owen: Are you about to sign something?

Donna: The-- the Forresters want me to take Eric off the ventilator.

Owen: What? I knew there was something going on here. Are you okay with this?

Donna: (Sighs)

Owen: You're not. Your husband's life is at stake, all right? He trusted you. Don't let them push you around. If you feel that there is hope for Eric, then you give him a chance. Listen to me, you are in control here. This is your decision. This isn’t theirs. And if you feel wrong about this, then don't let them end his life.
