Singer: You won't ever shiver in the rain you won't ever have to live a life of shame you won't ever turn out the light and know there's no one waiting watching over you when the thunder comes I'm there right by your side when the water falls I'm thereto keep you warm and dry. I don't know if I have ever been this strong before your love makes me something more your love makes me something more

Nick: That was us.

Katie: Then. For one incredible night when the world stopped. It seemed like we were the only two people left in it.

Nick: And those memories, they're all ours.

Katie: But this baby is not just some memory. It's real, and it's only gonna get more real, and it's gonna be very real to Bridget.

Ridge: Bridget, I need to hear it for myself, the truth. What's going on with Dad?

Bridget: Well, Mom told you that he was on a ventilator, right?

Ridge: I'm on my way to the hospital, but before I go, I-I-I need to know what exactly that means.

Bridget: (Whispers) I'm so sorry, Ridge. (Sniffles) (Normal voice) I'm just so sorry. I know how much you love Dad.

Ridge: Bridget, we all do. Talk to me here. I need to know.

Bridget: Okay. He was having trouble breathing, and with coma patients, it's critical that they get enough oxygen to their brain.

Ridge: Okay, so that's why he's on a-a ventilator? He can breathe on his own, but this'll just help with his recovery, is that it?

Bridget: Well, Dad's doctors wanted to just give him every... every possible chance. (Sniffles) look, I'm afraid that when machines come into the picture, the odds tend to get worse, not better. (Sighs) the fact that the coma is deepening and there's very little detectable brain activity, it just tells me that the risk of permanent brain damage is very high. It's the type of--of damage that probably-- probably Dad won't overcome if he even does survive.

Ridge: Are you saying that he won't?

Bridget: At this point, a full recovery... is highly unlikely.

Katie: We're talking about a baby... your baby.

Nick: It's our baby.

Katie: You know, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. I never would have been able to hang on until Bridget found an answer. She's not the only one who saved my life.

Nick: That's what I meant before. Bridget and I wouldn't be together if it wasn't for you. That's why what happened was--was pure and honest. For God's sake, we thought you were dying.

Katie: But I didn't die. And now I'm pregnant with your child, and this isn't something we can hide, especially from Bridget.

Nick: Yeah, you're right, we can't hide this.

Katie: How do we tell her? And what do we say when we know how hurt she's gonna be?

Ridge: You're saying that's it? Dad won't be able to make it back from this?

Bridget: The prognosis is not favorable, Ridge. (Sniffles) I wish I could tell you something different. You have no idea how much I wish that. Dad's doctors and I thought we would have seen an improvement by now, but we haven't. His condition keeps deteriorating. At this stage, to expect a reversal... I just don't see that happening. We've got to start preparing ourselves.

Brooke: (Sighs) Since the night your father collapsed, I refused to believe that we could lose him, and I kept saying, "When he gets better," not "If." The fact that he may never wake up-- I just can't comprehend that.

Bridget: (Whispers) I know. (Sniffles) (normal voice) I know, Mom. I-- (sobs) I just--I keep thinking that-- I know. I-I want to be in denial about it, but I can't anymore. I can't.

Ridge: (Sighs) Dad's always been my strength. No matter what life threw at me, he was always there with that same steady reassurance.

Ridge: I, uh... felt like with him by my side, I could do anything, I could achieve anything. (Sighs) he's one of the most amazing people I've ever known. He's the finest dad a man could ever ask for.

Ridge: Now you're telling me that there's a good chance he's not gonna come back from this. I'm not gonna be able to reassure him that everything's gonna be okay the way he was always able to reassure me. (Sighs)

Brooke: (Sniffles)

Ridge: How do we, uh... how do we do that, Bridget? How do we get along without our dad?

Nick: You said you talked to Dr. Caspary.

Katie: Yeah. There are a lot of unknowns. I'm on so many medications, and I guess the bottom line is that this is a very high-risk pregnancy, and I'm not the only one at risk.

Nick: The baby.

Katie: There's no guarantee that I'll be able to carry it, and even if I do, there could be serious problems-- birth defects. And we could play around with my medication, but then that could trigger a rejection episode, which brings the whole life expectancy question, and--and then that makes me think, well, do I even have a right to bring a child into the world if I might not be around to raise it? It's just... it's a lot to think about.

Nick: I don't like you talking like that.

Katie: Well, I don't like-- I don't like it either, but it's the truth. This child may never be.

Brooke: (Sighs) Is there any chance Eric will pull through this?

Bridget: (Sighs) Are you asking about a miracle? Sure, I suppose. It does happen.

Brooke: Katie is living proof of that.

Bridget: But we have to come to terms with the fact that if he does survive, I'm almost certain Dad's functioning will be seriously compromised, physically and mentally. The chance of him being the same man that we've always known is extremely remote.

Ridge: (Sighs) So you're telling us that Dad is never gonna draw another design? He's never gonna tell his grandchildren another ghost story around the campfire at big bear, huh? (Sighs) I just-- I can't believe that this is it. There's got to be some treatment, some medication, some specialist that can-- that can help here.

Bridget: Well, I understand you wanting to fight this, Ridge. I can't bear the thought of losing Dad, but medically, we're simply out of options.

Brooke: I guess... (sighs) there comes a time when we just have to accept the way things are.

Ridge: What does that mean? That Dad's just gonna lie there in a hospital bed on a ventilator forever?

Bridget: Ridge, we don't know how long he-- he will survive.

Bridget: There does co where his family will have to make a very difficult decision.

Ridge: You mean to take him off life support... to let him die.

Nick: Well, let's not try to sugarcoat what could be a very dangerous situation for you and the baby and incredibly painful for Bridget. So we'll just try to keep our heads the best we can today. Do not make any decisions, because you're not that far along.

Katie: Yeah. I mean, the end of the first trimester is usually when people... couples usually wait to tell other people, just to be safe. But you live with Bridget. I mean, you're her husband.

Nick: And we'll do whatever we can to protect her as long as we can.

Katie: At least until we're sure that the baby has a reasonable chance.

Nick: Well, let's wait till we're sure about a lot of things.

Ridge: I can't even understand what's going on here myself. Is in spite of all of our differences, she is Dad's wife. I believe they love each other very much.

Bridget: (Sniffles) There's something else that I-- I thought I should bring up to both of you. Under the circumstances, I went ahead and checked Dad's paperwork on file at the hospital. And, uh, not only did Dad give Donna financial power of attorney, but he also gave her the power of, uh, health care, which means that in the event that Dad can't make his own medical decisions, his wife is the one designated to make them for him. I-I-I know that this is kind of a lot to absorb, but I thought you would want to know that.

Brooke: So there was nothing else in the file? There was nothing that spelled out anything?

Bridget: No, not really. I assume that Dad probably wanted to do a living will or a medical directive. Either the full set of documents didn't, I don't know, get signed, or they weren't sent to the proper people.

Ridge: I can't believe that he wouldn't designate one of us to make that kind of a decision, someone in the family.

Brooke: Well, Donna is family, also, Ridge.

Ridge: Look, I may be in denial here, but I refuse to accept that Dad's gonna die. If and only if a decision like that is supposed to be made, we're all gonna gather together-- all of us together, all of us who love Eric Forrester, including Donna, and we'll all make that decision together. We'll do what we feel is best for Dad.

Ridge: We'll do what's best to end-- end his suffering.

Nick: (Sighs) You know, we've been so focused on all the risks, how to handle this and what's gonna happen. Let's not lose sight of what's really going on here. This has to be happening for a reason. I believe in that. I mean, look at yourself. You really never thought that you could have a baby. And now we know that you can, so that's a plus...

Katie: (Laughs)

Nick: Wouldn't you say?

Katie: Yeah, I guess when you put it that way.

Nick: There. You see? So we just have to believe that the--the man upstairs has got a plan. (Sighs) So, um, why don't we just take it a step at a time, stay positive and, uh, and just do the best that we can? And know that this is-- this is what's meant to be right now-- this baby.
