Donna: Am--am I-- am I your what?
Marcus: Are you my mother?
Dr. Patrick: Hard to believe you're finally getting out of here.
Katie: Do you really think I'm ready?
Dr. Patrick: You did well at your brother's funeral.
Katie: I guess if this heart can withstand that, it can handle anything, right?
Dr. Patrick: Recovery from a heart transplant can be a long and complicated process. For a while, you'll need assistance to do many things you were once able to do for yourself. That can be frustrating. Fortunately, you have family who can help you.
Katie: Um, I want to be transferred to a nursing facility.
Dr. Patrick: I'm surprised. I assumed one of your sisters--
Katie: I don't want to stay with them.
Dr. Patrick: Katie, being surrounded by people who love and support you can be very beneficial to your recovery.
Katie: I would feel like a burden.
Dr. Patrick: I understand. Your family's grieving, but perhaps by helping you--
Katie: It won't help me.
Dr. Patrick: Okay, not your family. But maybe you could stay with somebody else, someone, perhaps, who makes your face light up every time he comes to visit.
Nick: Oh, right. Right. Is that it? Good. Over there is good.
Bridget: Um, or actually, right over there is--okay?
Nick: Anywhere. Thanks, fellas.
Bridget: Thank you.
Nick: Appreciate it.
Bridget: (Sighs)
Nick: (Sighs) So what now? (Laughs)
Bridget: Thank you. Oh.
Nick: (Laughs)
Bridget: Thank you.
Nick: Well, it's not like I-- I-I didn't do much.
Bridget: Well, you invited me to move in with you, so that's pretty big.
Nick: I just thought my living room could use a change of decor.
Bridget: I'm trying to be serious right now.
Nick: Well, it's not like I took you in off the streets.
Bridget: Actually, you did.
Nick: Well, this seems like the next logical step for us, doesn't it?
Bridget: Even if it's not the next logical-- I mean, I'm sure some people would say it's too soon.
Nick: Well, those "some people" don't make decisions for me. So unless you've acquired some strange habits, I don't foresee any problems.
Bridget: (Laughs)
Nick: It's gonna be great.
Stephanie: Oh, you're still here.
Eric: Yeah, you know, there's nothing in this refrigerator but--but carrots and water.
Stephanie: Uh, Bridget's stuff that she left. I'm gonna--I just haven't had a chance to go shopping.
Eric: Well, good, because you can't live on this.
Stephanie: Well, I know that, and I am gonna go shopping.
Eric: There's that little store down on P.C.H.
Stephanie: Do you believe it's still there?
Eric: No, I can't. That's amazing.
Stephanie: Remember? We used to stop there and buy the sandwiches for the kids when we took them down to the beach.
Eric: Come on. I'll drive you down there.
Stephanie: Oh, would you like to carry my bags, too? Come on now, Mr. Newlywed. Shouldn't you be home with your brand-new bride?
Donna: You think I'm your mother?
Marcus: You're Donna Logan, right?
Donna: Yes.
Marcus: I'm adopted. You see, I found this picture of me when I was a baby, and it had a piece of paper with it. It had your name on it. Donna Logan-- just a name, I know. Not much to go on. But I searched the internet, and your name came up with more entries than any Donna Logan anywhere. I mean, but come on. What are the chances that my biological mother could be you? So I crossed your name off the list, and I kept looking.
Donna: So--so you-- you don't think I'm your mother?
Marcus: Well, I didn't, and then I started really lookin' at your pictures. I thought I saw something, but I had to come here and make sure. And now standing here, is it you?
Donna: Your mother? That's ridiculous.
Marcus: Is it?
Donna: Look, you--you seem like a fine young man, but having the name Donna Logan on your baby picture doesn't make me your mother.
Marcus: It's not possible? I mean, you never had a baby boy that you gave up for adoption?
Donna: I'm sorry.
Marcus: All right. I-I shouldn't have got my hopes up.
Stephanie: I'm not suggesting anything is wrong. Is something wrong?
Eric: (Scoffs) You really know how to make a guy feel good about doing something nice for you, you know.
Stephanie: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I do appreciate your help. Honestly, I do. It's just I don't want to go down to the grocery store now. I just want to relax.
Eric: Well, what are you gonna do? Oh, I know. You want to go outside with a nice glass of iced tea and a book.
Stephanie: Exactly.
Eric: (Chuckles) How many books did you use to read on vacation? I mean, your suitcase was full of 'em. Your suitcase weighed 100 pounds if it weighed an ounce.
Stephanie: (Laughs) What, are you complaining? Yes, I did read. I loved reading and when I wasn't reading, I was always cleaning-- all the laundry and the bathing suits and the kids' clothes and the dishes and sweeping all that-- the sand out. Do you remember-- do you remember that first little dump we rented?
Eric: I do. There was more sand inside than outside.
Stephanie: (Laughs) Not when I got through with it.
Eric: (Sighs) You know what I remember most? Being so tired at the end of the day and just flopping down on the bed next to you and listening to the waves.
Katie: (Groans and moans)
Dr. Patrick: Maybe you could stay with somebody else, someone, perhaps, who makes your face light up every time he comes to visit.
Katie: (Sniffles)
Dr. Patrick: Good morning. (Clears throat) I'd recommend these skilled nursing facilities. They all have staff trained to deal with transplant recovery.
Katie: Okay.
Dr. Patrick: Um, they're not spas. These facilities offer postsurgical care, rehab, hospice care.
Katie: (Sniffles) Yeah, I think they used to be called nursing homes.
Dr. Patrick: The technology and treatment they use in caring for their residents is first-rate, but it is administered by strangers. I think the circumstances of your transplant may call for care that's more personal.
Katie: Why would you say that?
Dr. Patrick: The one person I've seen who makes you smile-- that can be an important component to a successful recovery.
Katie: Um, my niece just moved back in with Nick and his son.
Dr. Patrick: That's good. Having a physician in the house could be very beneficial.
Katie: (Sighs) I haven't exactly been invited, and even if I were, it wouldn't matter. I'm going to a nursing facility. I don't want to be a burden to anyone.
Bridget: (Sighs) I feel so badly for Katie.
Nick: Well, so do I, but she's doing better.
Bridget: Yeah. I mean, she must be. Dr. Patrick is releasing her today.
Nick: Storm's funeral was a breakthrough for her.
Bridget: Yeah, it was amazing, but you--you don't just go through something like she's been through and recover overnight. It's a lot, emotionally and physically. It takes time and perseverance and a lot of help. And I'm thinking that that help should come from us, Nick.
Nick: You want Katie to move in with us?
Bridget: Well, yes. You've talked to her. You know that she's not gonna go live with my mother. Donna just moved in with Eric, so she's not gonna do that.
Nick: Well, she would if she didn't have a choice.
Bridget: We should give her one. Nick, she's my family. She needs a place to recover.
Nick: Honey, you haven't even moved in yet. Are you sure about this?
Bridget: Yes. And if you think it'll be too much, maybe we should just hire a nurse.
Nick: You, me and Katie-- you're really okay with that?
Bridget: What, sharing you? She had a crush on you. Big deal. Look, with my medical background and your lousy sense of humor, it really is the perfect place for her to stay.
Nick: That's painful.
Bridget: Well...
Nick: That's painful, really.
Bridget: It's-- it's really the truth.
Nick: (Sighs)
Bridget: You make her laugh. So I think that that will keep her positive and that's really what she needs right now.
Nick: Well, it's not something I would have thought of, but she doesn't have anywhere else to go, so... well, you know what they say. "Any port in a storm."
Bridget: Okay, that's the man that I know and love. Thank you. (Laughs)
Nick: Let's go get her.
Bridget: Thank you. (Laughs)
Stephanie: Ah, the ocean's just stunning today.
(Seagulls squawking and ocean waves roaring)
Stephanie: You know what I am going to miss? I have to be perfectly honest. I'm going to miss... all the activity at the big house, you know? The kids running in and out, calling for me, the door closing and slamming and opening and slamming and... (inhales deeply) ahh. Oh, gosh. That reminds me. I have to give you my set of keys to your house.
Eric: No. No, you don't. You sold me the house so that it would remain the gathering place for the whole family, and that includes you.
Stephanie: Okay. Uh, one word of caution as far as the grandchildren go-- don't let them catch grandma Donna skinny-dipping, okay?
Eric: Grandma Donna?
Stephanie: Yeah. Well, she did marry their grandfather.
Eric: Did you just call me a dirty old man? You did, didn't you?
Stephanie: Mm.
Eric: Anyway, she likes the kids. She's very good with Hope and R.J.
Stephanie: Good. Does she want to have children of her own?
Eric: We haven't discussed that.
Stephanie: So you're not sure?
Eric: Well, I'm just assuming no. Uh, it's pretty apparent that I'm through having kids, don't you think?
Marcus: I feel so foolish.
Donna: Please, don't apologize.
Marcus: I'm so sorry.
Donna: Don't feel bad. It was nice meeting you, really.
Marcus: I won't bother you again.
Donna: Marcus... good luck.
Marcus: Yeah.
Donna: (Sobs)
(Knock on door)
Donna: You-- you forgot your picture. Pam, what are you doing here?
Pam: I was visiting Tiny's grave, and I have some papers from the office that, uh, Eric needs to sign.
Donna: Call next time.
Pam: Why? You got something to hide?
Donna: Oh, my God. It was you. You just set me up, didn't you?
Katie: Thank you. And thank you, too, Dr. Patrick, so much.
Dr. Patrick: We did what we could, Katie. The rest is up to you.
Woman: The therapist and nurses at the center will see that you get all the help you need.
Katie: Um, I've got the insurance papers right here.
Woman: Great. That looks like everything. We'll finalize your transfer at the center. The van's waiting downstairs.
Katie: Okay, let's go.
(Elevator bell dings)
Nick: Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Stop. Stop. Stop.
Bridget: Where-- where are you going?
Katie: I'm being transferred to a nursing facility. I'm being released.
Bridget: No, you're not. You're coming with us.
Katie: (Laughs)
Eric: Listen, I can run down to the store for you, get--pick up a few things, and you can continue unpacking.
Stephanie: Don't you want to go home?
Eric: I'm just trying to help.
Stephanie: Thank you, but no thank you. I don't want to keep you any longer than I have from your young bride. (Sighs) (laughs) I don't want her blaming me when this marriage falls apart. I know you're happy now. I can see it. I just hope she doesn't disappoint you.
Eric: She won't. Any surprises that Donna brings to this marriage will be happy ones.
Donna: This has been a difficult day, and I don't need you adding to it.
Pam: Donna, I'm just looking for Eric. Just--
Donna: No, you are leaving.
Pam: Donna, what's your problem?
Donna: This has your and Stephanie's fingerprints all over it. And you know, she's probably been trying to dig up dirt on me since the day she found out about Eric and me. And you--and you-- showing up here like you don't know what's going on. Did you hire that guy?
Pam: What guy?
Donna: Did you go through an agency, or did you just pick him up off the street?
Pam: Donna, I don't know what you're talking about. Could you please just have Eric sign those? Thank you.
Dr. Patrick: You're offering to take Katie in while she's recovering?
Bridget: We're not offering. We're insisting.
Katie: You guys just moved in together today.
Nick: It's a big house. We won't even notice you.
Bridget: And you need to be in a positive environment with caring people who know when to encourage you and who won't be offended when you need to be left alone.
Katie: It--it's too much. I-I have doctors' appointments. I have P.T. classes. I have pain management, antirejection medicines.
Bridget: Oh, excuse me. I'm a doctor. Don't you think I can handle that stuff?
Nick: And I'll be the nurse. I've always wanted to be the nurse.
Katie: Well, as tempting as seeing you in a little white cap is, I-I have to--I have to say no. Concentrate on yourself. I can get better on my own.
Donna: His mother? He said he's not coming back.
Donna: No, it couldn't be.
(Door opens)
Eric: Hi, honey. Was that Pam I saw just leaving?
Donna: Hi, honey.
Eric: Hi.
Donna: I'm so glad you're home.
Eric: (Laughing) hey. Hey. Mm.
Nick: You can't.
Katie: I can't what?
Nick: You can't get better on your own. It's not an option.
Katie: You guys don't have to take responsibility for my life.
Nick: Well, thank God for that.
Bridget: Why are you so determined not to let us help you?
Katie: Because it's not fair.
Nick: What's "not fair" is going from one hospital to another.
Woman: Oh, we're not a hospital, sir.
Bridget: Oh, I think he was just speaking figuratively.
Nick: (Sighs) I told you. I told you she wouldn't go for this. Didn't I tell you that?
Bridget: Oh, right. Y-y-you-- you did not. Will you just--
Nick: Well, I thought it, though. When I was buying the sports package, I'm thinking, nobody's gonna watch this much sports, you know. HDTV is the second best thing to being there. You know that.
Bridget: Okay.
Katie: Why are you doing this?
Bridget: Because we love you, and we don't want to send you off to a cold, sterile environment, with all due respect.
Woman: Doctor, if you'd have a look at our facility, you'd se that we're not cold and sterile.
Nick: It's a convalescence center. Be honest.
Woman: Well, yes, but we take excellent care of our patients.
Nick: I'm sure you do, but most of the people are sick there, right? They're all, like, basically, looking at death's door.
Woman: Our facility is very highly rated.
Dr. Patrick: She's right. It's a top-notch place. Still, if there's another more personal alternative--
Woman: Oh, begging your pardon, Doctor, but Miss Logan has already signed all the papers, and I need to get her to the center for an orientation meeting.
Nick: Orientation?
Woman: To help acclimate Miss Logan to her new environment.
Nick: Well, I'm miss Logan's attorney, so if she's leaving and there's paperwork, I'd like to see it.
Woman: I assure you, everything is order.
Nick: Well, thank you very much, but I'd still like to see the paperwork.
Woman: I'll get it.
Nick: Get out of the way.
Bridget: Ooh.
Katie: Oh. Aah!
Bridget: Thank you, Doctor.
Katie: Aah!
Bridget: Thank you, Doctor!
Katie: You can't do this.
Bridget: Of course, I can do this. I'm a doctor. Whoo!
Katie: You don't want a patient in your home.
Nick: Would you shut up and let us drive? Now listen, we want you with us, right?
Bridget: Oh, of course, we do.
Katie: Okay, you win. No. No. I win.
Bridget: Mm.
Katie: Thank you. Thank you, both, so much. Thank you.
Katie: (Laughs)
