Phoebe: You're sure this is his room? This is where they're bringing him after surgery?

Bridget: Yes.

Phoebe: You know that? Well, what's taking so long? I mean, shouldn't he be out by now?

Bridget: I'm sure he's just in recovery.

Phoebe: Why isn't anybody telling me anything?

Bridget: Sweetheart, if you're not family, they just -- they can't tell you.

Phoebe: You don't understand, Bridget, I did this to him. Cut him with the stupid hedge trimmers. Do you think he's going to be okay? I mean, he's a carpenter. He needs his hands to make a living.

Bridget: I thought you said he was your gardener?

Phoebe: He is, but it's just a side job to pay the bills. I mean, he ran into some bad luck recently. I just -- he's going to be fine, right, with physical therapy and like, training, and stuff? People come back from this kind of thing all the time. He's going to be able to use it again.

Bridget: Well, sure honey. But this isn't my area. I'm not his doctor so I can't give you a definite answer.

Phoebe: Can you at least find out if he's out of surgery? I mean, I know it's against the rules, but it would really mean a lot to me.

Bridget: I'll see what I can do.

Phoebe: Thank you.

Bridget: It's going to be okay.

[Cell phone ringing]

Phoebe: Mom?

Taylor: Phoebe, I just got your message. What's going on? You cut the gardener's hand?

Phoebe: Mom, it was awful. It's just -- it's really deep and there was blood everywhere. It's really bad. It's my fault.

Taylor: Where are you right now?

Phoebe: University Hospital. He's still in surgery.

Taylor: Okay, I'm coming up. I just need to call a cab. I'll be right there, okay honey?

Phoebe: Okay.

Brooke: Bridget, I know you're probably working, but if you get a chance, give me a call. We need to talk.

Nick: You're really that worried about her going to Africa?

Brooke: I didn't want Stephanie to know that, but yes, I am.

Nick: That's all you're worried about?

Brooke: You know what? I'm worried about why she's going. I think she's trying to put as much distance between you and her as possible. She told me she still loves you, nick.

Nick: I know. But you just said that this is something that you thought that she should do.

Brooke: But is it? Is it really?

Nick: Don't get upset. I'm just trying --

Brooke: You know, I just -- I love my daughter and I want her to be happy. And she hasn't been happy ever since she lost you. And I should've seen this coming, because this is she always does when she can't deal with something. She runs. She's done that ever since she was a little girl.

Nick: Well, what do you want to do? Do you want to make a stand and make sure that she doesn't go? What?

Brooke: I don't know. I mean, I don't even know if it's my place to do that.

Nick: You're her mother.

Brooke: Yes, but I'm also your wife. Bridget's had a hard time lately. She's had a hard time letting go of Nicole. She had her urn out and her little blanket. She really misses her.

Nick: We both do.

Brooke: I know. And I know you and Bridget would still be married if Nicole never died.

Nick: Come on, don't do that, please. Don't go into the past like that.

Brooke: I benefited from it. I benefited from Bridget's loss. All of the happiness in my life right now, all of the joy because I'm now married to you? That is at Bridget's expense.

Phoebe: How is he?

Bridget: Thank you.

Phoebe: Did the surgery work?

Bridget: Yes, it did. There is a small change that he could develop scar tissue and have limited mobility in his hand due to the nerve damage.

Phoebe: What?

Bridget: Phoebe, it could've been so much worse. The surgeon really believes he's going to have a full recovery with rehabilitation. And the doctor's going to come up in just a minute to check on him.

Phoebe: Okay.

Bridget: Honey, are you going to be okay?

Phoebe: Yeah, I'm fine. My mom's going to come soon, so it'll be okay. Thank you. I don't know what I would have done without you.

Bridget: Oh, of course.

Phoebe: Thank you.

Phoebe: It's okay. Everything's going to be fine now.

Phoebe: Shane? Shane, can you hear me? Can you hear me? Hey. Shane, it's me. Phoebe Forrester.

Shane: Hey. What happened?

Phoebe: You're in the hospital. You just got out of surgery.

Shane: My hand, is it still there?

Phoebe: Yeah. With some physical therapy, you should be as good as new.

Shane: Oh, god. It hurts.

Phoebe: God, I'm so sorry.

Shane: Aw, man.

Phoebe: I'm so sorry. I should have never touched those things. I was just -- I was trying to cheer you up. You were in such a bad mood.

Shane: It's okay.

Phoebe: If the doctor hadn't been able to fix it, I would have never forgiven myself.

Shane: He fixed it, I hope.

Phoebe: Look, I'm going to be here for whatever you need, okay? I'll be here for as long as it takes.

Shane: Okay.

Bridget: Mom? What's wrong?

Nick: Stephanie told us about you wanting to go to Africa.

Bridget: Oh, well, I was going to tell you myself, but I got tied up at the hospital in an emergency, with Phoebe actually.

Brooke: Something happened to Phoebe?

Bridget: Yeah, well, kind of. It was her gardener. They were playing with his hedge trimmer, and she cut his hand up.

Brooke: Oh, my god. Is he going to be all right?

Bridget: Yeah, he's going to be fine. Phoebe's just a little shaken up about it. But she was better when I left. It'll be fine.

Brooke: What about you?

Bridget: Why are you crying? It's not because I'm going to Africa? Mom, I'm going to be fine.

Brooke: Honey, it's not just that. You're having a hard time being around nick, aren't you? It's okay. We've been talking about it.

Bridget: Oh, god. Honestly, I'm just really tired of talking about it. Tired of thinking about it. And I just -- you know, I just want to get my mind on something else, if I need to go away to do that, so be it.

Brooke: So you are running away?

Bridget: No, Mom. I'm just putting my energy into something much more productive.

Brooke: Honey, what about dealing with your problems?

Bridget: What are my problems compared to all of the suffering children around the world?

Brooke: Bridget, you lost a child.

Bridget: In Africa, Mom, 500 children die of a poverty related illness every hour. Okay, yeah, I couldn't save Nicole, but maybe I can help save those children.

Brooke: Honey, I'm just concerned. Remember last time you ran off to Copenhagen to try to avoid all of your issues? Nothing changed when you came back and you still had to face all of that.

Bridget: Well, nothing may change this time. But at least I'll get a change in prospective. Mom, honestly, nothing may ever change for me. But I need to believe that it can.

Brooke: Well, maybe I'm just being selfish. I really like having you here. Especially since Rick is so far away. It's really meant a lot of me. And I'm just -- just really going to miss you.

Bridget: I'm really going to miss you, too.

Shane: Look, Phoebe. I've been taking care of myself all my life, okay? I can take care of this thing, too.

Phoebe: I want to help.

Shane: No, no -- no more help from you. I'm just kidding. Ah, my arm. It really hurts. Listen, the doc already fixed my hand and there's really nothing more you can do. I'll take care of the rest of it from here.

Phoebe: Well, you'll need support.

Shane: That's really nice of you, but I'm really -- I'm really more of a loner.

Phoebe: Well, at least let me call your family or something --

Shane: No, no, no. They're way back in Atlanta and I really don't talk to them that much anymore. So, Phoebe, you know what? You're so sweet. I'm probably going to be busy with all this physical therapy and stuff for a long time. You really don't have to hang around and play nurse maid to some gardener guy, okay? Just because you feel guilty.

Phoebe: Well, I'll only feel guilty if you don't let me help you.

Shane: I'm not going to talk you out of this am I?

Phoebe: No, nurse maid Phoebe reporting for duty.

Taylor: Phoebe?

Phoebe: Hey, look who's awake.

Taylor: I am so, so sorry about this. How are you feeling?

Shane: I'm all right, I'm just a little overwhelmed by all of the attention.

Taylor: How was the surgery?

Phoebe: Well, hopefully it worked.

Taylor: I just can't believe this happened. Especially after you were so nice to come in and talk to me about, you know, being worried about my privacy.

Shane: Right.

Phoebe: You did?

Taylor: Yeah, he had come by and he was telling me that -- you know, maybe peering eyes might be looking around in the backyard. And we can be, you know, looked at, so --

Phoebe: Great, now I feel even worse. You know what? Don't worry. We're going to take care of everything.

Shane: Okay.

[Phone beeps]

Brooke: Oh, sorry. Yes, sally. Right now? Tell them I'll be right there. They need me in shipping. I'll just be a few minutes. Okay?

Bridget: Okay. I should go, too. I have a million things I need to do.

Nick: I'll walk you out.

Bridget: No, no, thanks though.

Nick: Bridget, there are other ways of avoiding me.

Bridget: People need my help, Nick.

Nick: A lot of them from this outfit.

Bridget: Well, that's a lot of good I can do. It's a lot better than just sticking around here.

Nick: If you're leaving because of what happened with us, don't you think it would make more sense to just tell your mother the truth --

Bridget: No, no I don't. We agreed, Nick. She will never know.

Nick: Your mother loves you. If keeping this a secret is going to keep her from her --

Bridget: Well, telling her will probably only make her hate me. And probably you, too. It's much better this way. With me gone, you can just focus on your marriage, and not how you almost you ruined it.

Nick: That's not how I see that night.

Bridget: Maybe you should, nick. To me, it was -- it was a really beautiful good-bye. To you and to the life that we -- the life we could have had together. I love you, nick. I wanted to be -- I wanted to be your reason for living and it just didn't turn out that way. You know, if it was meant to be, Nicole would have lived. And we would still be together. Life just didn't take me there, you know? From here. I just -- I'm going to make the best of it. And you know, if I can't make the best of it for me then I'm -- I'm going to make the best of it for other people who have far worse problems than I do. I wish -- I wish you and my mom all the best.

Doctor: You came through surgery fine. I just want to keep an eye on that hand. If you have a lot of pain, or burning, if you see any blood on the bandage, call the nurse right away.

Shane: Okay, doc. Give me the honest answer. Am I going to be able to use this hand like I could before?

Doctor: With the right physical therapy regiment, you should regain normal function.

Shane: All right. Cool. How long does that take? A couple of days or something?

Doctor: I'm afraid not. An injury like this, it would be more like months.

Shane: Months? I can't do that. I got to get back to work. I got to pay my rent.

Doctor: You can file for worker's compensation if you were injured on the job.

Shane: Worker's comp? They don't have insurance. I know they don't. They're not going to cover this. I mean, I don't even know how I'm going to even pay for this.

Doctor: Don't worry about that right now. You can make arrangements with the accounting department before you leave, all right?

Shane: Okay.

Doctor: Try and rest and I'll be back later to check on you.

Shane: All right. Thanks.

Taylor: Hey, hey, listen. The doctor's right. Don't worry about a thing. We'll take care of the hospital bill, everything. Don't worry about it.

Shane: No, no, no. Mrs. Forrester, come on.

Taylor: No.

Shane: You guys want to do that?

Phoebe: Yes, yes. And a lot more. Mom, he only has one hand. He can't take care of himself. I think we should take him back to our place. I'm serious, Shane. I told you I'll take care of you. And I promise -- I promise I'll make this up to you.

Brooke: So, Bridget left?

Nick: She said that she had some things to do.

Brooke: Well, that's not all she said.

Nick: No.

Brooke: Were you able to get through to her?

Nick: Her mind's made up.

Brooke: You asked her to stay?

Nick: I told her that there were other ways of handling the situation, other than running off to Africa.

Brooke: Well, I don't know. I thought about it while I was going downstairs. Maybe it is a good idea for her to go throw herself into something that would make a difference in the world. I certainly would miss her. But if she can't find happiness here --

Nick: That doesn't mean that she's going to find it in Africa.

Brooke: I know, but at least she'll regain confidence and boost her self-esteem. And who knows, maybe she'll meet a wonderful man who just as interested in helping people as she is.

Christian: I was wondering if you made a decision about the assignment? I was going to ask Felicia about it today.

Bridget: Oh, goodness. I have not had time to discuss it with her.

Christian: Oh, she's my next appointment, if you want to stick around, you can --

Bridget: My schedule is so backed up already.

Christian: It's a lot of work getting ready for a trip like this, huh? Every time you do it, it gets easier.

Bridget: Are you going back to Africa soon?

Christian: As soon as I can. But until then, I'm glad there are doctors willing to step up and make the commitment.

Bridget: You really think that I can make a difference?

Christian: You have no idea. Every contribution counts. Sending money is incredibly important, yes. But we need to get feet on the ground. The doctors and medicine into the villages and refugee camps.

Bridget: Do we have to take these shots every single time we go?

Christian: Believe me, it's worth it. You could be working in some very remote and hospitable areas. These immunizations can save your life. Now, this is a list of all the drugs you will be getting, what their warnings and side effects. Just read it and go ahead and sign it. And there's no chance you could be pregnant?

Bridget: No.

Christian: I have to ask. Some of these drugs could cause some serious birth defects and I'm required to test you if you've been sexually active since your last period.

Bridget: Oh, god. Oh, Nick. Christian, wait. Maybe you should test me. I mean, it's hardly worth mentioning, but there is a chance, a very small remote chance, but --

Christian: You understand if it's positive, you can't go on this trip.

Bridget: I mean, it won't be. I am not pregnant. I can't be.
