Colby: What did you just say?
Liza: He's obviously been drinking. Otherwise, he wouldn't be saying something so hateful about the mother of his child.
J.R.: I'm sober enough to mean every single word. How is my son supposed to grow up to be a real man being raised by two butch --
Liza: Ok, you know what? That's just about enough! That's enough. You know what? It is a good thing that you decided not to go to court, because you start spouting this kind of garbage in front of the judge, you never would've seen your son again.
Dixie: Hey, there. I was just looking at some old family photos. You ok?
Tad: No. It's Cara. She's not doing so hot.
Dixie: Oh, I thought she was ok with everything -- I mean, as good as could be expected.
Tad: What's expected? She's cleared her stuff out of her locker at the hospital, and then Jake's worried. He thinks she may want to go somewhere and be alone. Anyway, forget it. I'm sorry I mentioned it.
Dixie: No, no, it's ok. I want you to talk to me. Just because I'm back doesn't mean that I expect you to stop caring about Cara. And besides, this is really important, right? If Immigration finds out your marriage --
Tad: They can't. And they won't.
David: I shouldn't have let that happen.
Cara: Why not?
David: You're going through a tough time right now, and I don't want to take advantage. Look, um, make yourself at home. All right? I want you to get some rest before your flight.
Cara: Where are you going?
David: I'm -- huh. I'm gonna go for a walk.
Cara: Don't leave.
Ryan: You're backing Hayward?
Zach: Yeah. Anyway I can.
Ryan: Ok, tell me you're joking, please.
Greenlee: Doesn't sound like it.
Kendall: He's not.
Zach: He saved my life. I owe the man.
Ryan: Nobody used to tell you what to think.
Zach: This is all my decision.
Ryan: See, you think that, but Hayward is in complete control here.
Ryan: After everything David has done, why would you possibly help him?
Zach: Gratitude. He helped me put my family back together, and if he wants to do that for other families, I'm gonna help him do it.
Griffin: Hi. I got your blood work back. Everything looks good. I just have to make an adjustment to your meds.
Zach: That sounds great. We're talking about Hayward. You may want to listen to that.
Griffin: Listen to what?
Ryan: Zach is David's newest recruit.
Zach: None of us are saints, right? David's done some bad stuff. He's done some good stuff. Now he's working on something that could change the face of medicine.
Ryan: No matter how many people he kidnaps and uses as guinea pigs?
Zach: Ahem. We have a chance to do something really good here. We're gonna focus on some hope for the future. Why is that so hard for you? Get on board.
Ryan: What's going on here?
Kendall: All right, Ryan, you know what? That's enough, ok? Zach needs some rest.
Greenlee: You know what, Ryan? Let's go.
Ryan: All right. I just want you to ask yourself one question. How did Hayward pull this off unless he knew that your plane was going down?
Zach: He did know.
Ryan: And how is that possible?
Zach: I told him.
Cara: Don't apologize for the kiss, ok? It was mutual. It felt good.
David: I like you very much. It's been a long time since I've spoken so openly with anyone.
Cara: Me, too.
David: And I would love to continue all of this, but I don't think it's a great idea. You're vulnerable right now.
Cara: I'm not a fragile flower.
David: I know that. Of course, you're not.
Cara: Ok. I just see that we're having this conversation and it's real, and you're being honest and you're listening without judgment, and I feel like those are really great qualities in a man.
David: Ok. Then you're obviously not listening, because I don't have any great qualities. That's what everybody thinks around here, right? Ask anyone.
Cara: I think you're getting a bad rap. I don't see the horns and the tail and the pitchfork.
David: Ok. That's because I live in a hotel room, remember, and it doesn't go with the motif. The pitchfork is in storage.
Cara: It's in storage? Ok. Well, all kidding aside, I don't really feel like an outsider when I'm with you. You let me in, and I like it, and I want to stay. [Kiss]
Tad: Dixie, you've been through enough, ok? I really, really don't want to dump my problems in your lap.
Dixie: You have to listen to me, ok? I want to help Cara.
Tad: You don't even know Cara.
Dixie: I know that you care about her, and as far as she's concerned, I think that she loves you, Tad. Ok? And don't worry, ok? I'm not threatened by that, but I do understand. I think she's in a lot of pain. It's a pain that I have experienced.
Tad: With me?
Dixie: Yes, with you. When we were a couple, there was a couple of times there was another woman involved.
Tad: That's not fair. You can hardly put yourself in the category of "another woman."
Dixie: I'm not saying that is the situation. I'm just saying I understand what she's feeling.
Tad: And I'm saying I'm hardly that guy anymore.
Dixie: I know that you're not that guy, ok? That's not what I'm saying. We've both made mistakes. My point is, is that I want to help Cara somehow, as much as possible. I feel grateful to her. She's been good to you, very good to you, and to Kathy.
Tad: How can you be so annoyingly calm about this? I'm married to another woman.
Dixie: As crazy as it sounds, Tad, you thought I was dead. I can't blame you or Cara for wanting to move on with your life.
Tad: What are we doing? We got to get to the courthouse, got to worry about J.R. What are you guys doing here?
Marissa: A.J., will you go upstairs and play with the girls, huh? Dixie. Hi.
Dixie: Marissa? Hello.
Marissa: It's nice to meet you.
Dixie: Nice to meet you, too.
Tad: This is important. Why are you here?
Marissa: J.R. had the court date moved up, and then he never showed, so the judge just granted me full custody. Apparently J.R. tried to bribe him?
Dixie: Oh. Oh, no.
Marissa: I know. I just want to find J.R. and try to settle this amicably.
Tad: Don't do that, ok? He's gonna need some time to calm down, all right?
Dixie: Yes. And as much as you want to help him right now, I think maybe it might be better if Tad and I --
Tad: We'll take care of it. As much as he needs to hear what you have to say --
Dixie: Oh, of course.
Tad: I think we should start the ball --
Dixie: He and I should really talk to him first.
Tad: Ok?
Marissa: Sure. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dixie: Is that all right?
Marissa: Yes, it is.
Tad: We'll keep you posted.
Marissa: Thank you.
Dixie: It's nice to meet you.
J.R.: A.J. is a little boy. I don't want him exposed to that lifestyle.
Colby: What is wrong with you, J.R.?
J.R.: What's wrong with me? Marissa led me on. She moved back into my bed, back into this house -- hell, we even talked about having a kid -- and then Bianca dove in and turned her against me.
Colby: Ok, but they didn't do it to hurt you, J.R. It just happened.
J.R.: No, you're wrong about that. Bianca hates me from way back, and she got Marissa to hate me. The only person that's gonna get hurt is A.J.
Colby: You're the one hurting A.J. with your drinking.
J.R.: At least I'm not building up his hopes and crushing them. One minute he's got two parents, next he's got two mommies? You think that makes sense to a 7-year-old?
Liza: Makes sense to Miranda.
J.R.: No, Bianca can screw up her life all she wants, but she's not gonna screw up my kid, and neither will Marissa. This whole P.C. crap is completely out of control.
Liza: This is not political correctness. It's called common sense. You keep attacking Marissa with these hate speeches, or judging her legitimacy as a parent, I'm telling you right now you're gonna lose any chance that you may actually have.
J.R.: That's fine. You're the expert. What's my next move?
Liza: I'd say your next move is to find yourself another lawyer.
J.R.: Colby, your mother and I --
Colby: Mom, you can't quit on J.R., ok? He needs your help, please.
Liza: Colby, there's --
Colby: I know that we've had our problems, but he is upset, and he's saying things that he doesn't mean. Please, Mom, you can't walk away. I don't want to lose any more of my family.
Tad: Hey. We just heard about the custody ruling.
Dixie: Oh, I'm so sorry. Remember, this doesn't mean it's forever, ok?
J.R.: So now you want to stand by me?
Dixie: Come on, we just want to help.
J.R.: You think you can rise from the dead, team up with Tad, and then make everything ok? You can't.
Tad: She can sure as hell try. J.R., she has to. We've both known you your entire life, we know the man you're capable of being, but that man is dying under a mountain of anger.
J.R.: What do you expect? My entire family is nonexistent. My father is gone, Uncle Stuart and Babe are dead, and now I've lost my son, and all you can do is stand there and judge me!
Dixie: We don't judge you.
J.R.: Marissa might be able to delude herself into taking A.J. from me permanently, but I will never let that happen.
Ryan: You knew your plane was going down, and you didn't tell the police, you didn't tell Kendall? You chose to tell David?
Zach: My casino partners wanted me dead. I've known that for a long time. That's why I took Kendall and the kids out of town. And I paid Hayward to stand by in case something happened to me.
Greenlee: I still don't understand.
Zach: I told him to recover my body and use the same treatment he used on you, bring me back.
Greenlee: Why didn't he tell anyone?
Zach: Because I told him not to, not until he was sure that I would survive.
Greenlee: So you made this secret deal with David before your plane crashed?
Zach: Did what I had to do.
Ryan: You trusted David with your life?
Zach: Yeah. And he came through. And by the way, thank you. You did the same thing -- you came through for Kendall, protected her from Ricky.
Ryan: You can thank Griffin. He did as much as I did.
Zach: Yeah. You're the greatest. You did a good job. Thanks.
Kendall: Ok. All right. Can we all just stop with this? Zach needs some rest, ok?
Griffin: I'm all for saving lives, but David's methods could end up being shelved by the FDA. If that happens, nobody's gonna benefit.
Kendall: All right. Enough. Can we stop attacking David here?
Ryan: He let you grieve, Kendall. He let your children grieve. How can you not be angry?
Kendall: I was very angry.
Greenlee: When did you find out?
Kendall: Right before you guys did. Right before you showed up, I was furious and hurt.
Ryan: And now you just happen to be completely over it?
Kendall: Look, the fact is I have my husband back. My children have their father. Nothing else matters. When I first found out that Zach was on David's side, I did not understand it, but I agreed to go along with it for him. And now I am going to stand by David, too.
David: You ok?
Cara: Am I -- are you kidding? That was freaking unbelievable!
David: I'm gonna keep this between us, all right, for your sake.
Cara: Hey, I don't have any regrets. You have no idea how much I needed that -- I had no idea. I feel a million times better. Look, you saved another person without even trying.
David: It was my pleasure.
David: I can't do it.
Cara: You can't do what?
David: I can't let you go.
Cara: Can't let me go?
David: No. I can't let you leave Pine Valley. You're gonna be risking your life.
Cara: You didn't fight me before.
David: That's not true. I was trying to convince you to stay. But now I'm being more direct. I don't want you running around trying to dodge some sociopathic, psychotic drug lord.
Cara: I know what I'm doing.
David: Also, I know your secret.
Cara: I have a secret?
David: Yeah, you do. Yeah. You admitted that you like it here. You're looking for a reason to stay. I can give it to you.
Cara: Ok, I think we need to slow down.
David: Relax. I'm not gonna pop the question. Oh, my gosh. No. No. Look, this is about work. All right?
Cara: Ok.
David: Your brother bailed on me on Project Orpheus, right?
Cara: Mm-hmm.
David: So I need someone to take his place, someone I can trust.
Cara: Me?
David: Yeah. I've been watching you at the hospital. You have all the qualifications that I need, that I'm looking for. You stick around, and I'll fit you right in. We'll finish the work together. You'll help me make medical history.
Cara: I got to think about this, ok?
David: All right. But two requests -- don't take too long, and do your thinking right here in Pine Valley.
Tad: Can I ask you a question without you biting my head off?
J.R.: It's a free country.
Tad: Have you been drinking?
J.R.: Everybody already assumes I am, so what difference does it make? I might as well just go pour myself a nice little scotch right now.
Colby: Did anything I said earlier to you register, J.R.?
J.R.: Colby, stay out of this. Your online groupies might listen to you, but it's all just noise to me.
Liza: That's enough. Just lay off your sister.
J.R.: You quit. Get out of my face before I tell her something she's not gonna want to hear.
Tad: That's enough. Colby, Liza, I'm sorry. Would you give us a moment alone with J.R., please?
Liza: Gladly.
J.R.: I've got nothing to say to either one of you.
Dixie: Please don't be like this.
J.R.: Like what? Who are you to tell me what to do? You don't know the first thing about my life.
Dixie: I'm your mother. I know you. I know inside you is a beautiful, good, caring heart. But when you act like this, all I see is Adam.
J.R.: Here we go.
Dixie: You know the story. He went to incredible extremes to keep you away from me, even locked me in a mental institution. What did that get him? Think about it. Did it get him the eternal admiration of his only son? No. You two have been locked at each other's throats ever since.
J.R.: At least he was here.
Tad: Suffocating you.
Dixie: All I'm saying is there is more to being a father, a good father, than possession of your child.
J.R.: Are you saying that I should give up, that I should just hand A.J. over to Marissa?
Tad: No. We're trying to convince you to be the kind of father that he needs, the kind of father we know you want to be.
Dixie: You can do it. You could break the Chandler cycle once and for all.
J.R.: I just want my son back.
Tad: What if you had him? What if you'd won today, and he was back in this house tomorrow? What do you think he would see? He'd see you running around screaming at the top of your lungs acting like your father, ranting about Marissa trying to turn him against her. What do you think would happen? The minute he gets old enough, he's gonna be off like a shot just like you were. Don't make Adam's mistakes.
J.R.: My son loves me.
Dixie: Of course, he loves you, but he needs to know that he can trust you. He and his mom need to feel safe around you.
Tad: If they can, then we'll be behind you every step of the way, and what's more, I know Marissa will, too. She doesn't want to keep A.J. away from you, unless she feels she doesn't have a choice.
Ryan: You're standing behind Hayward? Both of you are standing behind him without even knowing what he's up to?
Zach: We believe in his work, you don't. That's the end of the story.
Ryan: That is not the end of the story. It's not even close to the end of the story.
Greenlee: You know what, Ryan? We just got Zach back, and you're already fighting him. He can handle this the way he wants.
Ryan: I just want you to listen to yourselves, that's all. You're talking about Hayward like he's some kind of God.
Zach: We're giving credit where credit is due.
Ryan: You did that. Greenlee did that, too. She put him up on a pedestal. She thought that he could do no wrong, meanwhile the whole time he was working her.
Zach: Is that it? It's about that -- Hayward took Greenlee from you? She's back now. Let it go.
Ryan: This is not about Greenlee. This is about Hayward. I'm trying to tell you the man is a psycho megalomaniac --
Zach: He's a brilliant man with the potential of changing millions of lives, and you can't see that because you're holding a personal grudge. Let it go. Go on with your life. Drop it, because if you don't, you're not just going against him; you're going against me.
J.R.: I didn't mean to go off on you like that. You're right. The sad fact is my own son is scared of me.
Dixie: But you can change that. You can change that, starting right now.
J.R.: Maybe not. A.J. is old enough to make his own decisions. When a judge asks him what parent he wants to be with, he's going to say Marissa, and that'll be the end of it.
Tad: No, that's not true. A.J. loves you. We both know it. All he needs is to know that you're safe, that you're stable and sober. J.R., you got your father's anger. There's no doubt about that, and it makes you capable of being every bit the son of a bitch that he ever was. But underneath it, you got your mother's soul, and that's what's gonna save you if you let it.
Dixie: What do you say?
J.R.: Man, I missed you. [Hugs Dixie] I'm gonna make this right. That's a promise. I won't let you down.
David: So you'll let me know what you decide about the job?
Cara: I will.
David: Good.
Cara: Ok. Bye.
Griffin: Hey.
Cara: Hi.
Griffin: What are you doing here?
David: I asked Cara to meet with me.
Griffin: In your hotel room?
David: Yeah. Yeah. It was a private matter. I thought it would be best to meet here, since Lavery's bloodhounds are sniffing around the place. But since you're here, it's probably as good a time as any. I offered Cara your position in Project Orpheus.
Griffin: How quickly did you turn him down?
Cara: I haven't decided yet.
Griffin: Yes, you have. The answer's no.
Cara: Griff, you can't tell me what to do.
Griffin: You cannot trust him, Cara.
Cara: You know what? I was all set to leave, ok? I booked the ticket. I packed my bags. It was David who convinced me to stay.
Griffin: So you're just gonna take off? Let's go. Come on.
Cara: No. I'm gonna go by myself. I'm gonna go consider his offer, ok? Excuse me. We'll be in touch.
David: Ok.
Griffin: You worked her somehow.
David: Do I detect a note of jealousy? Why does it bother you if your little sis takes over your position?
Griffin: I don't want my sister anywhere near you.
David: I offered you an opportunity of a lifetime. You turned it down for a woman. Now, that's a shame, since her husband is back on the scene.
Griffin: Oh, you son of a bitch.
David: You blew it, Griff. Now it's Cara's turn. Don't stand in her way.
Griffin: You know what, David? You're messing with her just like you messed with Zach. I just back from seeing him at the hospital.
David: What is that supposed to mean? I thought he was recovering well.
Griffin: Physically he's fine. But I don't know what you put in his I.V., because he's talking about you like you're the second coming.
David: Wow. This day just gets better and better.
Ryan: Are you threatening me?
Zach: I'm letting you know where I stand.
Ryan: You stand with Hayward.
Kendall: All right, would you stop? Ok, I don't want to hear any more of this.
Greenlee: The last thing we need is you two turning on each other.
Zach: Why don't you give us a minute, please?
Kendall: Are you sure?
Zach: Mm-hmm.
Greenlee: They'd finally gotten to a good place, and now they're at it again, thanks to David.
Kendall: David is the reason that Zach is alive.
Greenlee: Listen, I get that you and Zach are grateful to David -- part of me is grateful to him, too -- but I just want you to be careful. You saw what he did to me when I came back. Don't let him do the same to Zach.
Zach: I'm not the same guy I was before the crash -- and not because David turned me into some kind of a robot.
Ryan: Then what did happen? Please, just explain it to me. You can tell me, Zach. You had some kind of revelation or something?
Zach: Yeah, something like that. I realized that my partners, my casino partners, got to me, because I let my guard down. I lost focus. And this whole time that Hayward was working on me for months, he never got distracted or lazy.
Ryan: He kept you from your family. I know you can't possibly admire him for that.
Zach: He did what I asked him to do. He gave me my life back. And he reminded me of something very, very important -- to never let my guard down again.
Kendall: If anyone knows Zach, you should know that nobody can control him.
Greenlee: I've been trying to get Ryan to let someone else go after David.
Kendall: Try harder, please. He needs to relax a little bit and just chill out.
Greenlee: He's just concerned, just the way you were when David moved in on your mother.
Kendall: I'm not saying that David is my new best friend, but I don't think he has some master plan to take over the universe.
Greenlee: You don't know what he's planning. No one ever does.
Kendall: You have to admit the man's a genius. What he's doing is amazing. I mean, it's a miracle. What? What?
Greenlee: You tried to kill him a few months ago, and now you're worshiping him?
Kendall: I don't worship David at all. I'm just thankful for what he's done.
Greenlee: So am I. But you don't see me lining up behind him waving his flag.
Kendall: I told you how difficult this was. This is a very difficult decision for me. But I love Zach, and I'm gonna stick by him.
Greenlee: It's just so extreme.
Kendall: So is getting your husband back after you've buried him.
Greenlee: Maybe you just need to give it a little while. It's all just still really new.
Kendall: I don't need time, ok? I've made up my mind. No one can change my mind, or Zach's.
Greenlee: Same goes for Ryan.
Ryan: I sincerely hope you're not making a mistake, Zach.
Zach: My only mistake was letting my partners take a shot at me. I got a second chance. I plan to make the most of it, and Hayward is a big part of that plan.
Liza: So how did things with J.R. shake up?
Colby: Thank God for Tad and Dixie -- that's all I have to say. And J.R. still needs a lawyer, and he could hire somebody new, but nobody would do as good a job as you would.
Liza: All right. All right, yes. Yes, I will do it, but I'm gonna do it for you.
Colby: Thank you.
Dixie: I think this is the last of it. Shall I go dump these down the sink?
J.R.: Confession?
Dixie: Lay it on me.
J.R.: I still have two bottles stashed in my closet. I was slipping shots into my coffee just to take the edge off.
Dixie: Want something better to take the edge off? Just grab on whenever you need me, ok?
J.R.: I can do this, right?
Dixie: Oh, honey, absolutely.
J.R.: No more temptations. No more distractions. It's all about A.J. Nothing's gonna stop me from being with my son.
Tad: Marissa, please.
Marissa: I really appreciate everything that you and Dixie are doing to help J.R., I really do, but I need to make sure that it's safe for A.J. to be around him. Ok? No more flipping out -- definitely no more drinking.
Tad: J.R. knows that. I think losing custody was exactly the kind of wake-up call he needed.
Marissa: I think I need to see him, be around him, make sure that he's really ready to deal with this as a human being, a rational human being.
Tad: Ok. Fine. I'm telling you J.R. loves that boy more than life itself, ok? He's dedicated to being the kind of father that A.J. needs.
Marissa: If that's really true, I'm willing to work with him.
Tad: Thank you. Really, thank you. He's promised to do his best, and I'm gonna hold him to it.
Marissa: Yeah. You and me both.
Tad: Thanks again.
Marissa: Thank you.
[Doorbell rings]
Tad: Hey. Come on in.
Cara: Thanks. Sorry I scared you.
Tad: I just thank God you're all right.
Cara: I was gonna leave, but I changed my mind. So --
Tad: I'm really happy to hear it. What changed your mind?
Ryan: So how does Hayward factor into your plans?
David: Gentlemen. Thought I'd stop by to see how you're doing. You're looking good.
Zach: Feeling good, almost 100%.
David: Terrific. Then I guess I'll leave you to enjoy it.
Zach: Stick around. You may want to hear this.
Dixie: All done.
J.R.: A thousand bucks worth of booze down the drain, but it was worth it. I couldn't have done it without you.
Dixie: I am so incredibly proud of you.
J.R.: Marissa.
Marissa: I can come back.
Dixie: No, no, stay. We can talk later. I'll give you some privacy.
J.R.: How's A.J.?
Marissa: He's ok, but he's not ready to see you again yet.
J.R.: I understand.
Marissa: I talked to Tad. He said that you're going to stop drinking.
J.R.: Done. My mom and I just dumped all the booze out of the house, not a drop left.
Marissa: Tad also said that you're going to control your temper.
J.R.: It kills me that A.J. doesn't want to be around me, but I'll win back his trust, show him that's not really who I am.
Marissa: If you're really willing to put in the work, and I see improvement -- I mean real, consistent improvement -- I'll try to get A.J. to change his mind.
J.R.: I'm just sorry for scaring him the way I did.
Marissa: We'll talk again soon.
[Door closes]
J.R.: If someone was taking your kid from you, you wouldn't waste one minute explaining anything to anybody. It's on now, Dad. That bitch is about to find out exactly who she's up against.
Cara: I've been thinking a lot about what I want, and it's the same as it's always been -- I'm a doctor; I want to make people better. Project Orpheus.
Tad: Project Orpheus? You mean like Hayward's thing?
Cara: Yeah. It's incredible. I don't really need to explain that to you, right, because Dixie's here, and Kendall has Zach. And there's a lot more work that needs to be done, and I have an opportunity to be a part of it. So --
Tad: How?
Cara: How? Um, David has offered me my brother's position. I actually need to think about it because if I accept, I have to leave the hospital. But I would be crazy to turn it down.
Tad: You can't do it. You can't work for David Hayward for any reason, no matter what he tells you.
Cara: I really appreciate your concern, but this is my decision. Excuse me.
David: Look at this. The gang is all here. So what's this about?
Zach: You.
David: My favorite subject.
Zach: You came through for me, my family, and I want people to know about that, and I want people to benefit from that, and I have some ideas on how to do that.
David: I'm all ears.
Zach: How would you like to take on a partner?
David: You want to work with me?
Zach: I do. We get your treatment FDA-approved, and then we get Orpheus incorporated -- save lives, make millions.
Ryan: You have completely lost your mind, Zach.
Greenlee: You can't do this.
David: Actually, he can. I'm in.
