Erica: Ben, I know you feel horribly guilty about this, but it was just an accident.

Ben: Her little girl is dead, because of me.

Erica: Jane shouldn't blame you for that.

Ben: Jane doesn't blame me for her daughter's death. She blames herself.

David: Maybe it would help if you told me about her, about Lydia.

Jane: No, no, no. No, I don't want to talk about it. I don't even want to think about it. That was the whole point: Erica Kane would never have to.

David: You can't run away from the loss. Believe me, I've tried.

Jane: Watch me.

Bianca: I really appreciate you helping me out with this. I'm usually on top of everything Miranda Center, but with building the new clinic and -- how are you doing? I was really sorry to hear about Madison and the baby.

Scott: Oh. Thank you. I'm hanging in there. Just trying to keep myself busy. I've been focused on rebuilding the gatehouse.

Bianca: Yeah, Marissa told me about that tree falling.

Scott: Hits keep on coming, don't they?

Bianca: At least J.R. is bending over backwards to help you out. What?

Scott: Talking about J.R., my cousin? I might get a wave when he drives by, but that is about it.

Bianca: I think he's trying -- at least when it comes to Marissa.

Scott: That's great. Ahem. But I guarantee you if Marissa lets J.R. back into her life, he's only gonna hurt her again.

J.R.: You deserve to be happy, you deserve to have fun, and I want to be the one to give you that because I love you. I never stopped. I want you right now.

Tad: Well. If it isn't Agent Trouble.

Agent Trumbull: Trumbull.

Tad: I know. To what do I owe the pleasure?

Agent Trumbull: I need to talk to your wife.

Tad: I'm sorry. Cara got called into the hospital on an emergency.

Agent Trumbull: She's at the hospital?

Tad: Mm-hmm.

Agent Trumbull: So she's not here with her new husband, because she's off with the old one?

Jake: Are you crazy? I would never tell Amanda what happened between us. It would devastate her.

Amanda: Oh, my God.

Opal: Oh, I'm glad I caught up with you. I just spoke to Janine.

Amanda: Is Trevor ok?

Opal: Yeah, he's just peachy fine. Janine sounds like death warmed over. She said she'd been trying to reach you but kept going to voice mail.

Amanda: Look, I hate to ask you this.

Opal: Don't worry about it. I'm there. No problem.

Amanda: Thank you. I really need to talk to Jake. This can't wait.

Opal: Yeah, I can see that. I just caught a glimpse of them, Jake and Cara head to head like that, and I don't like it any more than you do. So you go on, you fix it -- not just for yourself, but for Tad, too.

Tad: Cara isn't necessarily with her old husband. She's at the hospital, because she works there. And if my brother Jake is with her, it's because it usually goes with the territory when you're chief of staff.

Agent Trumbull: Um, how is that married life working for you?

Tad: "That married life" is great.

Agent Trumbull: Is Mrs. Martin saying the same thing?

Tad: I certainly hope so. I mean, man, she's gorgeous, isn't she? Those eyes and smile just lights up my world. Huh. And that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface, but I'm sure you just wouldn't understand.

Agent Trumbull: Enlighten me.

Tad: I haven't known her long, but I'm sure of one thing. Cara lives to do one thing: To help people. It's who she is. She can't help it. Heart and soul, right down to the ground. No, she's at that hospital, because it's where she belongs. It's what she was put on this earth to do, and she's a brilliant doctor.

Agent Trumbull: So I hear.

Tad: Yesterday I let my mother color my hair.

Agent Trumbull: Looks nice.

Tad: You didn't see the first go-around -- a color not found in nature. Looked like an elf.

Agent Trumbull: Your point?

Tad: My point is there's no way I could possibly express to you what my wife means to me. There's nothing I wouldn't do for her -- walk on fire, chew glass. Even look like an old fool just to make her feel a little more comfortable about the age difference, because the world is full of people like you just trying to figure out the deal. But then again, maybe I'm wrong. Because, after all, you were at the wedding. You heard my vows. I'm sure you can figure out how I feel about my wife.

David's voice: Kate is alive, and you have no idea where she is.

Dixie's voice: David, I played a part in what happened.

David: Don't do this. You're a victim here.

Dixie: You don't know that.

David: All right. Fine. Tell me. Tell me what you could possibly have done to deserve this kind of hell.

Jane: Why can't you let it go?

David: Like you have?

Jane: Yes. My old life, gone. That's why I became Erica Kane: So I could feel good about myself. So I could bask in the spotlight and sign autographs and have an exciting life and the love of a good man. I don't want to go back. I can't go back. I can't go back to being that grieving mother.

David: So this is your answer?

Jane: You know my secret, and I will do what you ask, but let me be very clear. No more talk about my former life, ever. I'll be in touch.

Erica: You're a very impressive man, Ben.

Ben: Because I cost a little girl her life?

Erica: Because you're giving up yours for someone else. No one would chose to live like this.

Ben: Yeah. But then Jane didn't choose for my car to run into hers.

Erica: Ben, you know you could go to prison. Have you thought about that? I can help you, I will help you, if you help me.

J.R.: Marissa?

Marissa: I'm sorry. Don't you think this is a little bit too soon?

J.R.: Obviously not, or I wouldn't have put it out there. Oh, my God, you're seriously surprised.

Marissa: I'm just not ready. I'm sorry.

J.R.: I guess I misread the signs.

Marissa: "The signs"?

J.R.: Yeah. I thought that you were enjoying this. I don't mean to give myself a pat on the back, but I've gone to great lengths to impress you and make sure you're happy.

Marissa: I am happy -- I mean, I think I'm happy.

J.R.: Then what? Do you want me to tell you again? I love you so much. I don't know how you could doubt that.

Marissa: I don't doubt that.

J.R.: Then what? What is it gonna take for you to realize that you, me, and A.J. -- we need to be a family?

Marissa: I don't know.

J.R.: You don't know? You don't know how I feel, or you don't know what I'll do, or --

Marissa: I -- all of it. I just -- I'm a little confused right now.

J.R.: You're confused? Are you sure? Or are you hung up on someone else?

Scott: Come on. You can't tell me that you're rooting for J.R., not after what he did to her.

Bianca: No, I'm rooting for Marissa. J.R. was her first real love, and I don't think that, deep down, that really ever went away. If there is a chance that that family can come back together, then -- I don't know -- maybe she should go for it. It would certainly solve a lot of problems.

Scott: What problems?

Bianca: No, I -- I just think Marissa deserves the world. And if, for whatever reason, J.R. can give it to her, then I hope she goes for it.

Marissa: Why are you so angry?

J.R.: Why don't you admit that you have the hots for my cousin?

Marissa: Scott?

J.R.: Come on. Don't act all shocked. It's not like you hadn't gone there before.

Marissa: I can't believe this is happening right now.

J.R.: You like Scott because he's sweet and safe. He'd never hurt you like I would, right?

Marissa: J.R. --

J.R.: No, sometimes in life, you have to take a risk, and what we have right now is one of them. I went on a line to tell you that I'm crazy about you! Was I afraid that I was gonna be rejected? Yeah! But I didn't give a damn, because I knew at the end of the day that I took a shot! So you're willing to throw all that away, because you're scared?

Marissa: No, no. You're twisting this around. Again, you're making it all on me, but let's not forget, J.R., you're the one who tanked our marriage. You!

J.R.: I know. I know. You can't hold that over my head forever.

Marissa: I'm not, but I'm just trying to be smart for myself and for our son.

J.R.: Yeah, our son, who wants us to be together.

Marissa: Being together was never our issue.

J.R.: Ok. So that's it? You're not even gonna try?

Marissa: Did I say that?

J.R.: Then what are you saying?! I'm sorry.

Marissa: No, no, that's ok, because that was a much-needed reality check. You're not angry because of how I feel or how I don't feel. You're angry, because you're not in control, and you hate that.

J.R.: That's not true.

Marissa: Yes, it is true. Just deal with it, J.R.! I'm calling the shots, and this is too much too soon. It's too soon.

J.R.: Marissa?

[Door opens]

Jane: Oh.

Jack: Hello, beautiful.

Jane: Hi.

Jack: What's wrong?

Jane: Nothing's wrong.

Jack: Ok. Look, I know I've said this dozens of times, and it's fallen on deaf ears, but maybe if we talked about this, it might help.

[Knock on door]

Jane: Oh. I'll get it.

Man: I'm sorry I'm late. Crosstown traffic was unbelievable.

Jack: And you are?

Jane: Roger Farish, "Faces Magazine." I just completely forgot that we set this up, but please come in.

Jack: Do you think this is the best time?

Jane: Oh, of course, I do. Don't be silly.

Roger: So may I shoot some photos while I record the interview?

Jane: Oh, yes. Multitasking -- I love that. Ok, let's just start on the couch? Ok. Just a second.

Roger: So is the wedding still on hold -- right there -- or just --

Jane: To tell you the truth, we've just been so busy. We haven't had a chance to talk about it, but I'll tell you what. When I am standing at that altar, and I am looking into Jack's eyes, it's gonna be that much sweeter because of everything we've had to overcome to get there.

Roger: That's beautiful.

Jane: So is our love story.

Frankie: No visible signs of head trauma, but we haven't had a chance to scan him yet.

Cara: Let's check it out.

Jake: Let's do it. Hi, honey.

Amanda: Hey, do you have a second? I need to talk to you.

Jake: We have an emergency.

Amanda: Right. Of course, you do. Good thing you've got Cara there to help you out.

Jake: Listen, I know that we need to talk about everything, ok, and we will. I'm not trying to blow you off.

Amanda: Right. You go take care of your patient.

Jake: We're gonna talk about this, ok? I'm gonna call you when I'm done. All righty?

Amanda: Go.

Jack: Was there a square inch of this place that he didn't photograph you?

Jane: That was so much fun. That was the perfect escape.

Jack: Escape from what?

Jane: Oh, please, let's just not go there again.

Jack: I would probably say yes to that request if I had any idea where the hell "there" was. Erica, is this because your kidnappers haven't been found? Are you afraid they might resurface?

Jane: I'm just afraid that this nightmare will never end, because no one will let me forget it. You know what? I've got to go.

Jack: Ok.

Cara: Nice work, Dr. Martin.

Jake: Very nice work, Dr. Martin.

Cara: Ok.

Jake: Don't get your knickers in a bunch, ok? You just got back to work. We're gonna get you a locker.

Frankie: Guys, there's a problem.

Cara: What's wrong?

Frankie: Some blood work and cultures came back from the spinal tap. It doesn't look good.

Jake: Meaning what?

Frankie: We have to rule out meningitis, SARS, and the flu.

Cara: Awesome.

Frankie: Until we confirm diagnosis and treatment, you guys need to stay in here.

Jake: Wait. You're putting us in isolation?

Frankie: I'll get you out as quick as I can.

Amanda: Can I have a white wine, please? Actually, scratch that. Dirty martini, olives.

David: Martini, huh? Maybe you'd like some company.

Amanda: Would it matter if I said no?

David: I'll have a vodka on the rocks, please.

Cara: So, SARS? Hmm. It's not really my thing, you know?

Jake: Not my thing either. Are you kidding? I'm a little worried, though, if it's meningitis.

Cara: No. Can you imagine if Griff were here, what he would do? He'd be storming the hallways demanding immediate attention for his sick sister.

Jake: Thank God you're not sick anymore.

Cara: He kind of forgets that. Some people do.

Jake: I don't forget anything -- about you or us.

Cara: So do you think that we're gonna be ok?

Jake: You know how these things go. If it's meningitis, it's bacterial, and as long as we get it early enough, then we'll be fine -- and this is plenty early.

Cara: I wasn't talking about our health. I was talking about us and Tad and Amanda, and I just don't want what happened to mess everything up.

Jake: It won't, as long as we don't let it.

Cara: Right.

Jake: Should we call them or something and tell them what's up?

Cara: Yeah.

Jake: All right.

[Phone rings]

Amanda: Hello?

Jake: Hey. It's me. How are you? I just wanted to tell you that -- ahem -- that emergency that I told you about turns out -- um, it's potentially an infectious disease down here at the hospital, so I'll let you know when I know what's what. Ok?

Amanda: Is it dangerous?

Jake: These things -- once they have a diagnosis, I'll know if I need treatment. And I'll keep you posted, then I can get out of here.

Amanda: Don't you mean "we"?

Jake: Hmm?

Amanda: Wasn't Cara exposed, too?

Jake: Yeah.

Amanda: So you're stuck there, just the two of you?

Jake: Yeah. Honey --

Amanda: All right. Tell Cara I said hi, ok? Bye.

Kathy: Where's my bank, Daddy?

Tad: Why? You gonna buy out the candy store again?

Kathy: No. I found a penny.

Tad: Ah. Cool. Ok. Come here. Err. You know what to do: Make a wish.

Kathy: Wishes are for babies.

Tad: Who told you that? It's not true. Wishes are important. They're a big part of life. I mean, they may not come true the minute you make them, but you got to believe your old man. Every penny, every birthday candle, ladybug, wishbone, star is there for when you put that dream out there. And everybody needs a little bit of that no matter how old you get. Know what I mean, Jean? Ok. You got it? Your wish.

Tad's voice: Hope doesn't have to die. In fact, it never dies. It's always there, right between love and forgiveness. The trick is you only know that if you have faith, and somehow I got there. It's like I just woke up, and I was me again, no more lost cause. I even wished on the Christmas star.

Dixie: I did, too.

Tad: It helped us find each other. It'll help us find Kate, too. She's ok for now. She's being taken care of, but she's waiting for us to find her, and when we do, you're gonna bring her home. It's gonna happen. I know it.

Cara: I promise I will be fine, and I will call you as soon as I know more.

Tad: All right, but no more fooling around with infectious diseases, ok?

Cara: Ha ha. I'll be fine. Don't worry.

Tad: I'll talk to you soon.

Cara: Bye-bye. Thanks.

Jake: [Imitates spray bottle] So how'd that go?

Cara: How's Amanda?

Jake: Huh?

Cara: Amanda.

Jake: You heard how my end went.

Cara: She's upset because I lied, right?

Jake: I'm -- I'm an idiot.

Cara: No, you were trying to keep her from being hurt, Jake.

Jake: But look how I can do one little thing, and I can have the potential of losing my wife and my son forever, who I would throw myself in front of a train for. So I was thinking maybe -- maybe I should just tell her.

Cara: Ok.

Jake: I know I said that I wasn't gonna do that and that it would devastate her, but I think that it would be healthy if we just got it out in the open, and I think that we could handle it.

Cara: You think she'll believe you?

Jake: I mean, it's the truth. She has to, right?

David: All right. That's great. Thank you. Good news. They've ruled out SARS. Now they're just waiting to find out if it's flu or meningitis, but either way, everything's gonna be fine.

Amanda: Who was that on the phone? I thought everybody at the hospital hated your guts.

David: I still have a few enamored nurses on staff. I'd tell you who they were, but you'd ask Jake to fire them.

Amanda: Right. Like Jake would listen to me. Maybe if you'd tell Cara.

David: Oh, ok. Now I get it. That's what this is about, isn't it? You're not worried that your hubby might be at death's door, it's just that he might be knocking on it with Cara Castillo, right?

Amanda: To you, David. You really know how to comfort a girl. Good thing you're no longer a doctor -- your bedside manner sucks.

David: I'll be using that bedside manner before you know it, honey. Hmm.

J.R.: Come on, pick up. Pick up. Amanda, where are you?

Amanda: I'm at the bar at the club. Shouldn't you be with Marissa?

J.R.: I had to cut it short. Listen, I spaced an important meeting with a potential investor. His name is Mason Phillips. He's an I-banker. He had to stay the night, so he's at our company's hospitality suite.

Amanda: Here? Right now?

J.R.: Yeah, and I'm late. I called you, because I was hoping you were close. It's even better for me that you're there.

Amanda: What do you want me to do?

J.R.: I want you to work your magic. I want you to keep him from bailing on us. I cannot stress to you how important this is. Chandler's been having cash flow problems, and this Phillips could be the answer.

Amanda: This really isn't my job.

J.R.: I know. Listen, there's a proposal that's in his suite. Let him look over it. I'll get there just as soon as I can. I just have to change.

Amanda: I mean, yeah, of course, I'll do it. I just -- listen. Fair warning, I don't know how much magic I'm going to be working. I'm having a pretty crappy day.

J.R.: You and me both.

Bianca: Must be pretty bad if you haven't touched that yet. How was your date with J.R.?

Marissa: It was a disaster. A complete and total disaster.

Cara: I don't want to tell you what to do, but I will tell you this. The whole honesty thing, it actually worked for Tad and me. We feel, like, closer together, you know?

Jake: Yeah?

Cara: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I -- to be open like that, I was scared out of my mind, but, like, for the first time it felt kind of like we were a real couple.

Jake: Really?

Cara: Would that bother you?

Jake: With my brother? I love my brother. And if it made you happy and -- ahem -- made you smile, I'd be all for it.

Cara: Ok. Cool.

Jake: Except what I just said there is -- a lie. In fact, anytime I say anything like that, it's a lie. I'm just saying what I think you and everybody else want to hear me say. And I want to mean it, but I don't.

Cara: It's hard, isn't it?

Jake: In fact, the idea of anybody even touching you -- I'm crazy, right?

Cara: No, you're not.

Jake: Yeah, I'm the same guy that was just talking about how much I love my family. Wasn't that me?

Cara: Look, it's normal to feel jealous or whatever it is that --

Jake: I am jealous. I'm jealous. And I know that that's crazy. Whatever.

Cara: I wish I could say that it was crazy. But since we're kind of putting it out there, um -- there's a huge part of me that wants you to love me most. Wow. I can't believe I just told you that.

Jake: Well -- we'll blame it on the isolation. That's what we can do.

Cara: That's what we're doing!

Tad: Good news. Go ahead, tell them. It's good news.

Frankie: Meningitis.

Cara: That does not sound like good news.

Tad: No, the viral kind. I'm sorry. You probably could've --

Frankie: Yeah, I was. Thank you. Anyway, I checked your records, and you both are clear with the vaccine.

Jake: So that's good. Then we're good, right?

Frankie: Yeah.

Cara: That's great. Thank you, Frankie.

Frankie: No problem.

Cara: Wow! Why are you here? I told you not to worry.

Tad: I know, but with your history, I just -- I'm sorry. I apologize, because I know you hate that.

Cara: Coming from you, not so much.

Tad: Come here for a second. Oh, I am so glad you are ok -- I mean both of you. Listen, do you -- can we get out of here, please?

Cara: Sure.

Amanda: Mr. Chandler's been delayed, but if you have any questions --

Mason: I do. Are you Amanda Martin, the supermodel?

Amanda: Um, ex-model, but, yes, that's me. I can't believe you recognized me.

Mason: Yours is a face you don't forget. High fashion to finance? That's quite the leap.

Amanda: It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up, especially after talking with J.R. His plans for Chandler Enterprises are -- well, you saw. And the company is on the brink of something really incredible. To get in now before everything hits, you could be doubling, tripling your investment in no time.

J.R.: Mr. Phillips, I am sorry that I'm late. In the interest of not wasting any more of your time, why don't we just jump right on it here.

Mason: Actually, I think we're done here.

J.R.: At least let me show you.

Mason: I'm in.

J.R.: You're in?

Mason: Yeah. Amanda showed me the figures and gave me her pitch. I've decided it's quite the investment.

J.R.: Your pitch?

Mason: Not just beautiful, this one. Smart, too. We'll be in touch.

Amanda: Thank you.

J.R.: You won't regret this.

Mason: Thank you.

J.R.: Look at you, closing deals.

Amanda: What can I say? I'm good.

J.R.: Apparently. Thank you for stepping in and saving my butt. This calls for a celebration.

Marissa: He accused me of having feelings for somebody else. I mean, Scott? That's crazy. He's my best friend. Actually, that's not even true anymore. You're my best friend.

Bianca: Yeah?

Marissa: Yeah. God, I couldn't talk about this kind of thing with Scott. Sex? But you? I could tell you anything. You don't know how much that means to me.

David: Make yourself at home.

Jack: I will. I want you to stay away from Erica.

David: I'm surprised I have to tell you this, Counselor, but it's a free country. It's my prerogative.

Jack: My fiancée. And if you think you can use this thing with Kendall to bully her --

David: "Thing"? "This thing"?

Jack: I'm here to tell you that is not going to happen.

Erica: Ben! Ben, please come back!

Jane: Erica? I need your help.

Jack: What happened with Kendall as some kind of a trump card with Erica --

David: No. What happened is Kendall put a bullet in my back, Jack. Ok? She never paid the consequences.

Jack: Hayward, with all the consequences you've never paid, maybe you should just consider this even.

David: You know what? As displeasing as this is for you, Erica doesn't despise me. We have history, Jack, ok, and I guess she's starting to remember that.

Jack: Oh, I think what she's starting to remember is what a sadistic son of a bitch you are.

David: No, no, what a talented doctor I am. Ok? What a loyal confidant and friend, because, honestly, that's where it's heading. In other words, I'm not going anywhere.

Marissa: What if J.R. is right?

Bianca: Right about what?

Marissa: Me being scared, so scared of getting hurt that I can't even see something great that's staring me right in the face.

Bianca: There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself.

Marissa: But am I missing something? I guess the question is, what's worse? Getting hurt, or not feeling anything at all?

Bianca: I don't know.

Amanda: Thanks for the drink, but my bad day's still pretty bad, so --

J.R.: What happened?

Amanda: Jake's in isolation at the hospital.

J.R.: Why didn't you tell me? I would've found someone else.

Amanda: No, it's just a precaution. They're gonna be fine.

J.R.: "They"?

Amanda: Cara's with him.

J.R.: Oh.

Amanda: It's a perfect excuse to be alone together, right, and for who knows how long?

J.R.: I'm sorry. I know that you had your suspicions.

Amanda: They're not suspicions anymore. They're facts.

Tad: Running down to the hospital, I wasn't trying to be overprotective. It's just you start throwing around words like "SARS" and "meningitis" --

Cara: It's hard not to freak out. I know.

Tad: Give me a little credit. I wasn't freaking out, per se.

Cara: "Per se"?

Tad: Ok.

Cara: I got a lucky penny.

Tad: No, that's Kathy's.

Cara: Oh.

Tad: Maybe I was freaking out a little bit, but I give you my word it won't happen again.

Cara: No, don't.

Tad: I know. I just said --

Cara: No. No. I mean don't give me your word. I like that you care. It makes me feel special.

Tad: You're not my wife. Where is the pod? Every time Griffin tries something, you go on and on about how you feel smothered.

Cara: I guess you got the magic touch.

Tad: You like that I care?

Cara: Mm-hmm.

Tad: I do. I do. I mean, I seem to tell everybody but you. It's the truth.

Cara: Well, who's "everybody"?

Tad: Agent Trumbull for one.

Cara: Oh, no. Was he here?

Tad: Uh-huh. Here earlier asking questions about our marriage. It's the way he says it -- you can practically see the air quotes.

Cara: So what'd you tell him?

Tad: I told him some things that I -- I should've been telling you. I think you're amazing. There's nothing I wouldn't do to -- I care.

Cara: I know.

Amanda: So it's too late to get a refund on the room, right?

J.R.: Yeah. Why? What did you have in mind?

Amanda: Would it be ok if I stayed here tonight?

J.R.: That's fine with me. But if Jake's at the hospital, who's with Trevor?

Amanda: I am going to take care of that right now. Opal.

Opal: Hey there. How's everything going?

Amanda: Fine. I was just wondering if you would do me a really huge favor and stay with Trevor tonight?

Opal: Are you ok?

Amanda: Yeah, I'm fine. I just could really use the time to myself.

Opal: You know I'm always happy to help out, honeybunch.

Amanda: Thank you so much, Opal.

Opal: You get a chance to talk to Jake?

[Phone beeps]

Amanda: Oh. Sorry. Actually, that's him on the other line right now. Thanks again, Opal.

Opal: No problem, honey. Take care.

[Phone rings]

Opal: Hello?

Jake: Opal?

Opal: I thought you were on the phone with Amanda.

Jake: No. I couldn't get through. Have you spoken to her?

Opal: Yeah. She needs me to watch Trevor. I guess she's not coming home.

Jake: Hmm. Did she say why?

Opal: Not to me.

J.R.: You didn't answer Jake's call.

Amanda: Ohh. Nope.

J.R.: Are you sure you're making the right decision?

Amanda: You know what? Let's let Jake wonder what I'm doing for a change.
