Cara: All right.

Tad: I heard you.

Cara: Hi. Yeah. Here. Got you a -- let's do chocolate -- muffin.

Tad: Ah.

Cara: Yeah. Coffee -- here you go.

Tad: How did you do this?

Cara: Yeah, ran. Two miles there --

Tad: Literally ran?

Cara: Yeah, totally -- two miles back. Yeah, it's good, right?

Tad: So I assume you're gonna have some?

Cara: No. I gonna have more, so -- never have enough. Yeah.

Tad: What time is it?

Cara: Oh, I know what time it is. Time to get your hair fixed, so chop-chop! Let's go.

Tad: No. Before you chop, you're gonna tell me whatever the hell is up with you.

Angie: Your replacement is here and ready. Someone's got to run this place while you take your family vacation.

Jake: Yeah.

Angie: Set a date yet?

Jake: There's so much going on I -- "No" is the answer. I don't even know if it's the answer anymore, to take a trip.

Amanda: Better get changed. We're gonna be late.

J.R.: I canceled the meeting. I'm sorry. I should've called you.

Amanda: What happened to these guys being a really big deal?

J.R.: They still are, but work can wait. I got some plans with Marissa.

Amanda: Well, things must be going pretty good for you guys. Lucky you.

J.R.: What, problems on the marriage front?

Amanda: "Problem," singular, and her name is Cara.

J.R.: Still? She is married to Tad now.

Amanda: Yeah, maybe you should tell her that. She refuses to leave Jake alone, and now they've started lying to me.

Krystal: More coffee?

Jane: No, thank you.

Krystal: Enjoying breakfast?

Jane: The juice is warm, the eggs are cold, and the fries are soggy.

Krystal: And yet you keep coming back. I guess it's just to give me hell, huh?

Jane: Beats the food.

Bianca: Oh, Mom, I'm so glad I ran into you.

Jane: Oh. Hi. What is it? Something wrong?

Bianca: No. It's just fries for breakfast, fries in general -- so not you.

Jane: These fries -- they wouldn't be anybody.

Bianca: Mom, are you sure you're feeling all right?

Jane: There's no vodka in my orange juice, if that's what you're asking.

Bianca: I'm not.

Jane: I just wish everyone would stop watching me like some damn science experiment.

Erica: Ooh! Oh! Oh! Oh. Oh.

Ben: Are you ok?

Erica: I don't know.

Ben: Where does it hurt?

Erica: My ankle. Oh, please don't let it be broken.

Ben: We'll check it out. We'll see what we're dealing with here.

Erica: Thank goodness I have you.

Cara: Drink, eat, please. You can stop the inquisition, though. I'm fine.

Tad: Private investigator, remember? It comes naturally.

Cara: Yes. Do you have a license for that? Let me see the license.

Tad: No. Forget it. No segues. You've been off ever since you came home from work last night.

Cara: All right. Whew. It's about Jake, all right? It is, but it's not what you think.

Tad: I'm not thinking anything.

Cara: It's actually Amanda. She came to me. She started asking questions about Jake and me in the tent and if it reminded him of the Sudan, and then I didn't know what to say because I was just -- so I just said that I've never seen him there. You get it? Ok. So just when I thought we could move on --

Tad: You can. No, no, no --

Cara: That's great.

Tad: No, it's just gonna take a little time. Give it time to -- for things to settle down a little bit. And I know what we can do meanwhile: Fix me. Please, God, fix me.

Cara: Ha!

Bianca: You ask me not to worry, and then you act like this. What am I supposed to think?

Jane: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I know that I have been on edge lately, but I am not about to fall off the wagon. Truly. Truly. So I have everything under control, and if you will excuse me now, I need to go and speak with David.

Bianca: That's another thing: Why are you spending so much time with him?

Jane: Wow. You and Jack, you are certainly two peas in a pod.

Bianca: For good reason. You know better than anyone what David is capable of.

Jane: Which means that I know better than anyone how to handle him. So -- look. Truly, I love that you want to protect me, but for the last time, I just don't need it. Oh! Look. Here's your friend. You can catch up.

Marissa: Hey.

Bianca: Hi.

Marissa: Good morning.

Bianca: It sure is. I guess this means you had a good date with J.R.?

Marissa: Yeah. We had fun -- make that a lot of fun.

Bianca: I'm glad.

Jane: I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually happy to see you.

David: You have a real way with compliments, you know that?

Jane: Oh, I had to get away from Bianca. Girl is driving me bonkers.

David: Whoa. First of all, Erica would never say that about her daughter. And secondly, she would never use the term "bonkers." You need to be more careful, Jane.

Jane: Don't you ever call me that again. That is not my name.

Ben: Worst case, you sprained it.

Erica: Do you have experience in the medical field?

Ben: You should keep it elevated.

Erica: Oh, thank you. Thank you for taking such good care of me. I owe you.

Ben: You don't owe me anything.

Erica: But you feel that you owe Jane. Why? You said something about a terrible day. What was so terrible? What happened?

Ben: I can't talk about it.

Erica: Please, Ben. Please. This woman is holding me hostage. She's taking my life. I'm just trying to understand why, why you feel obligated to be here. I know this probably sounds crazy, but I've really come to like you -- even care about you -- and it's my guess that she's holding us both prisoners. Am I right?

Ben: I'm here because I want to help her.

Erica: Why?

Ben: The accident -- sorry.

Cara: So I used to do this for my mom all the time.

Tad: Really? She go gray early, too?

Cara: Yeah. I think it was the stress -- Dad left, and I was sick. She married my dad and thought they'd be together forever, obviously, right? And then, like, one day she wakes up and, poof, he's gone. That's why I promised myself I would never fall in love. I would never let myself get hurt like that.

Tad: Huh. And then you met Jake.

Cara: Yeah, I met Jake, and, poof, he changed everything. Then I was forced to leave and -- and I left him the same way my dad left my mom. So what am I doing?

Tad: What? Please don't tell me something went wrong. Is my hair falling out?

Cara: Your hair looks -- it looks really good.

Tad: Don't scare me like that, because I'm seriously damaged here.

Cara: No, it's I'm insensitive. Yeah. I'm going on about Jake and -- no, it's history.

Tad: Cara, come on. So, yeah, it was history. You were in love with the guy. He changed everything, and the way you ended was terrible. I'm sorry that it happened. Moving on is hard --

Cara: Yeah.

Tad: For everybody.

Cara: It helps having someone like you.

Angie: You know what? I think your idea to go away is a good one, give you a chance to press that "reset" button. But you know what? I think you can do one better.

Jake: Yeah? Tell me, because I'm open to anything.

Angie: Turn it into a big surprise. Plan the trip of a lifetime. And then on the day that you're ready to leave, present her with the tickets, and then whisk them away.

Jake: I like it. I like it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do what you just said, because I think it's a good idea.

Angie: All right. So what are you still doing standing here? Go. Get your travel agent on the phone and get on this.

Jake: Ok.

Amanda: What am I supposed to do with that? Jake claims he's been to this tent at the clinic with Cara. Cara says he's never been there. And then to top it off, he doesn't come home last night, claims he was working.

J.R.: You don't believe him.

Amanda: Honestly, I don't know what to believe anymore. And I don't know why I'm telling this to you.

J.R.: Because you want my advice?

Amanda: I guess it couldn't hurt.

J.R.: Don't jump to conclusions. You don't know if she's out to steal Jake or that they're even having an affair.

Amanda: I caught her lying to me.

J.R.: About a tent. That's not enough. Before you go code red, start calling people out, make sure they've actually done something wrong.

Marissa: Don't tell me David's making trouble again.

Bianca: I just wish I knew what they were talking about, why she's spending so much time with him.

Marissa: You're really worried about her.

Bianca: She almost took a drink.

Marissa: What?

Bianca: Yeah. Uncle Jack stopped her before anything happened, but it is obviously just so not like her. And then when Kendall and I tried to talk to her about it, she just insisted that we were overreacting.

Marissa: I'm so sorry. As if you're not going through enough lately.

Bianca: I want her to ask for help if she needs it.

Marissa: Not always an easy thing to do.

Bianca: We're her family.

Marissa: I'm your friend. Hey. Tell me how I can make things better for you.

Bianca: You can't.

David: Wow. You're particularly jumpy this morning. Something going on I should know about?

Jane: You mean, in addition to the fact that you are blackmailing me or that my family is lodged down my throat?

David: There it is.

Jane: I made the mistake of admitting to a weakness.

David: Ha ha ha. All right. Erica doesn't have one of those. And even if she did, she certainly wouldn't cop to it.

Jane: Yeah, I found that out.

David: So what happened?

Jane: Jack caught me about to take a drink. And the next thing I knew, I was lodged between Kendall and Bianca in an intervention.

David: You do realize it's only because they care, right?

Jane: I wish to God they cared a little bit less, because I have never felt so smothered in my life.

David: Except this isn't your life. It's Erica's, and you went to a great length to poach it.

Jane: I know that. None of the magazine articles ever mentioned anything about all this. All I wanted was the excitement, the beauty, the glamour.

David: You wanted to be the celebrity, not the mother. I understand.

Jane: You do?

David: Yes, I do. I can only imagine being around Erica's daughters must bring back some very painful memories for you.

Jane: I just remembered I have a meeting. I have to go.

Bianca: Mom, wait.

Jane: Yeah, we'll talk later.

Marissa: A comedy club? I didn't even know J.R. was into that kind of thing. But, oh, my God, we just laughed -- we laughed till we cried. It was amazing. I'm sorry. You probably don't want to hear about this.

Bianca: Oh, why not?

Marissa: Because nobody likes to hear somebody blab on about their love life.

Bianca: I asked you to distract me, remember?

Marissa: Yeah. Next time I'll just pull out a deck of cards.

Bianca: You look happy.

Marissa: I am -- I think I am. Scared and happy -- is that possible?

Bianca: Yeah.

J.R.: Hey.

Marissa: Hi. I thought you had a big meeting that you had to go to.

J.R.: I postponed it.

Marissa: Why?

J.R.: To hang out with you.

Marissa: You're bailing on work for me?

J.R.: I was hoping we could spend the morning together, if you don't already have plans?

Marissa: Oh, I don't know. Bianca and I were kind of in the middle of some --

Bianca: Of nothing. I -- oh. I actually have to get to a meeting about the Miranda Center, so you are totally free, if you want to be?

[Phone rings]

Marissa: Oh. A client. I should take this. Ahem. Excuse me. Hello?

J.R.: Thank you.

Bianca: For?

J.R.: Making up that meeting, and canceling the other night. The comedy club was great.

Bianca: Yeah, I heard.

J.R.: Your suggestion was spot-on.

Bianca: So what do you have planned for this morning?

J.R.: A catered meal in the park. Tablecloths, candle lights -- the works.

Bianca: Sounds fancy.

J.R.: You don't think Marissa wants fancy?

Bianca: The truth?

J.R.: Please.

Bianca: I think she wants simple, meaningful.

J.R.: So how would I do that?

Bianca: Stop by a deli on the way and get orange soda and doughnuts.

J.R.: Heh heh heh! You're serious?

Bianca: Yeah. And then sit on a bench and talk. It's what her parents used to do after church on Sundays.

J.R.: How do you know more about my ex-wife than I do?

Bianca: It's a freakishly good memory.

J.R.: So doughnuts and orange soda, huh? Thanks again.

Bianca: I'm not doing it for you.

Tina: And that's it.

Angie: Great. Now I'm officially up to speed on Mr. Pastore.

Tina: Let me know if you need anything else.

Angie: I will. Thank you, Tina.

Amanda: Oh, Angie?

Angie: Oh, hi, Amanda.

Amanda: Hi. How are you? How's Lucy?

Angie: She's wonderful.

Amanda: Oh, have you seen Jake around at all?

Angie: Yeah. I was just with him. He had to go up for a meeting. He said it's probably gonna be a while.

Amanda: He worked all night. I was hoping to get a few minutes with him.

Angie: I tell you what. Why don't you give him about an hour, and then check back, ok?

Amanda: Ok. Thanks. Oh, Lori, hi. Can you have Jake call me when he gets out of his meeting?

Lori: Dr. Martin's not in a meeting. He left the hospital.

Amanda: Um, where'd he go?

Lori: I don't know. He didn't say.

Amanda: Ok. Thank you. Oh, hi. Excuse me. Do you know if Dr. Cara Castillo's on the schedule today?

Tina: Not today, no.

Cara: All right.

Tad: Is it in the directions that the water's got to be, like, ice cold?

Cara: Come on. This is the price you have to pay for beauty, yes? What? I can't even -- let me take a look. Where did you go in there? Oh, no.

Tad: What? What? What?

Cara: Oh, my God. Looks good, right?

Tad: I look human again! Man, would you look at that? You're a genius!

Cara: I'm a doctor, but muy caliente, I have to say.

Tad: "Caliente?" Hot?

Cara: You look hot.

Tad: You think I look hot?

Cara: I do.

Erica: I thought I scared you off for good.

Ben: Need to wrap that ankle.

Erica: I'm sorry if I upset you.

Ben: Don't worry about it.

Erica: Maybe if you talk to someone. It's never a good idea to keep all your emotions bottled up. They'll just eat you alive the way they are now. You can trust me, Ben.

Ben: It happened so suddenly. Oh, just thinking about it -- it's my fault. I killed her.

David: So your meeting's here. That's interesting. FYI, Erica prefers to keep her work and her home separate.

Jane: Get out.

David: But I just got here.

Jane: I mean it, David. I can't deal with you right now. So do I have to call Security?

David: I did some research. I used my connections to dig up more on Jane Campbell and her reconstructive surgery. I had no idea how deep it went.

Jane: Stop this right now. I do not want to talk about this.

David: You and I are gonna be partners in the hospital. I needed to know everything there is about Jane.

Jane: Do not call me that!

David: You must miss her very much -- the daughter you lost in that car accident. Despite your efforts to keep it under wraps, I was able to get the name of your plastic surgeon. Imagine my surprise when I learned that it was Dr. Fascinella, the same one who worked on Erica after her car accident. Believe it or not, I was also able to get my hands on your chart. You sustained some serious internal injuries in that crash. It's a miracle you even survived.

Ben: It was a bad night to be out, let alone behind the wheel. Snow, sleet, rain, wind -- you name it. I was going to work. I should've stayed home. But I didn't want to lose the pay. People think snow tires let you drive in anything. Those things are useless against ice. I was coming around a curve and just started sliding. I couldn't stop. No guardrail to keep me on my side of the road, and I smashed right into an oncoming car.

Erica: Jane's car?

Ben: She was driving. Her little girl was in the back.

Erica: Oh, no.

Ben: I walked away without a scratch, but her daughter never stood a chance. And Jane? No one thought she would make it.

David: I knew something traumatic must've happened to make you go to these lengths. But this?

Jane: Why are you being so cruel?

David: I am not being cruel.

Jane: Yes, you are. You're making me relive this entire nightmare.

David: I needed to know what you were made of, if Jane Campbell was really --

Jane: I am not Jane Campbell. Jane Campbell died the night she lost her little girl!

Bianca: I'm doing it for Marissa's sake, because she deserves to have fun and to be in love and to be happy, simple as that sounds.

J.R.: And you know that I'm the one who can give her all that.

Bianca: Always comes back to you, doesn't it, J.R.?

J.R.: I want the same things. That's why I'm doing this, so I can get it right. Don't you think it's embarrassing for me to ask advice on my ex-wife's likes and dislikes? I should know this stuff.

Bianca: You should. So now that you do, just don't forget it.

J.R.: I won't.

Bianca: She's really responding to you, which -- no offense -- is really surprising to me, considering everything you've pulled.

J.R.: Surprises me, too, but I meant what I said. I regret everything that I did.

Bianca: You always regret your mistakes, J.R. It doesn't stop you from making more.

J.R.: Not this time.

Bianca: I hope you're serious about that. Because if you're not, if you hurt Marissa, I'll hurt you. That's a promise.

J.R.: Hey.

Marissa: Hey.

J.R.: You ready to go?

Marissa: Yeah. Go where, exactly?

J.R.: I can give you one clue, and one clue only. It involves something orange.

Marissa: Hmm.

Tad: I look like a new man. Really.

Cara: Yeah.

Tad: Or a refurbished middle-aged one. Yeah. Suave, debonair -- dare I say it -- spritely?

Cara: "Spritely" is -- that's --

Tad: Energetic, youthful.

Cara: Oh, wow. Look at that. So we're just gonna just skip on over all of what just --

Tad: The kiss?

Cara: Yeah. Yeah, I wasn't expecting fireworks. I mean, don't get me wrong, but I thought -- I don't know -- maybe that was kind of nice. You glad it happened or something like that?

Tad: I'm not just glad it happened, I'm thrilled.

Cara: Ok.

Tad: It was nice. Very nice. I just don't want you to feel like you owe me.

Cara: "Owe you?"

Tad: Yeah, because of what just happened, or almost happened, with Jake.

Cara: Oh, no, I didn't do that because of Jake.

Tad: You're sure?

Cara: Yeah. I mean, you got to be so sick and tired of hearing about my problems with Jake, right?

Tad: Kind of sort of. Getting there.

Cara: Look, I know I hung onto him. I hung onto him in such a huge way, but the night at the tent, I had to move on. Ok? This is where I want to be.

Tad: Yeah?

Cara: Mm-hmm.

[Phone chirps]

Cara: Ok, I got to --

Tad: Perfect timing.

Cara: Yeah.

Tad: The hospital, isn't it?

Cara: Yep.

Tad: Yep.

Cara: So I need to go change. Excuse me. Ok. Oh. I like the hair. Liked the kiss. I like you.

Amanda: Excuse me? Can you tell me if Cara Castillo is working the clinic today?

Doctor: Haven't seen her. Sorry.

J.R.'s voice: Before you go code red, start calling people out, make sure they've actually done something wrong.

[Amanda searches the tent and finds Jake's button, then remembers]

Amanda's voice: You're missing a button. How'd that happen?

Jake: I am? What? Beats me.

David: You should know in gathering this information, I didn't clue anyone else in. No one is aware of what you've done besides me, and per our agreement, that's exactly how it's gonna stay. So has it helped being someone else, being Erica Kane?

Jane: Jane Campbell was -- Jane Campbell was hideous.

David: How could that be?

Jane: I was ugly my whole life. Even my parents couldn't stand the sight of me. I'm sure that's what drove them into an early grave.

David: But certainly you must've had other family, people who cared.

Jane: No, no. No one -- until I adopted Lydia. She loved me. She loved me unconditionally with her whole heart. It didn't matter to her what I looked like.

David: Lydia is a very beautiful name.

Jane: She was a beautiful girl. She was take-your-breath-away beautiful. And I just wanted to make sure that my little girl had the life that I never had -- friends and boyfriends and a mother who adored her. Only then it was just all ripped away.

David: But why Erica Kane?

Jane: I've been her biggest fan ever since I can remember. Erica Kane was my escape. Whenever my mother would tell me how ugly I was, I would run to my room, I would close the door, lock the door, and I would close my eyes, and then -- oh, then I'd be gorgeous. And people would want to be with me, and they would want to look at me, and they would want to be me. So Erica is really how I survived. And then Erica Kane was making a public appearance in New York, and how could I miss meeting my idol in person? And I didn't want to leave Lydia with a sitter. I mean, not in that bad weather and all. Because what if the power went out, and Lydia was so afraid of the dark. And so I took her with me. I took her with me. And, well, after the accident, ohh, I just couldn't live with myself. And that's when I became the fabulous Erica Kane.

Bianca: Oh, you just missed Marissa.

Krystal: Oh, really? Where'd she go?

Bianca: To the park with J.R.

Krystal: Man doesn't give up, does he?

Bianca: She's not giving him much reason to.

Krystal: I'm not so sure that's a bad thing, really. I kind of think J.R. is sincere -- and if he's not, look out.

Bianca: Oh, don't worry. I've already put him on notice.

Krystal: I think to you, he just might listen. Marissa's really lucky to have you.

Marissa: You're being so mysterious, making me wait in the car while you go inside of a convenience store. Mr. J.R. Chandler himself? I never thought I'd see the day.

J.R.: What? I've been in convenience stores before.

Marissa: When?

J.R.: I'll have to ask my assistant.

Marissa: Very funny.

J.R.: Sit -- I mean, if that's ok?

Marissa: Yeah, it's perfect.

J.R.: All right.

Marissa: All right. What you got? Ooh. Oh, my. Doughnuts, huh? And orange soda. J.R., I used to do this with my parents.

J.R.: Every Sunday after church.

Marissa: I never told you that. How did you know that?

Jake: So I'm debating Belize or Costa Rica, but I guess you can't really go wrong with either one, as long as there's, like, the spa there --

Cara: Hi.

Jake: Hi.

Cara: Excuse me. We need to talk.

Jake: Sure. What's up?

Cara: Amanda, actually. She cornered me yesterday. She started asking me these questions.

Jake: Really? What kind of questions?

Cara: About you and me, the tent, if you had ever been there, if it reminded you of the -- whatever. The point is I didn't know what to tell her, so I said that you hadn't been there. Ok? I just wanted to give you the info.

Jake: I told her the opposite. I told her that I was out there.

Cara: Oh, great. All right. When is this gonna end? When is it?

Jake: I will figure this out.

Cara: And how are you gonna do that? Will you tell her the truth?

J.R.: Of course, you told me. You were trying to rally me. You were trying to give me visions of things we could share and new traditions with A.J.

Marissa: That's so weird. I don't remember telling you that.

J.R.: Because you were focused on me. It was always about me, but that's gonna change right here, right now. You're such an incredible woman, Marissa. You deserve to be happy, you deserve to have fun, and I want to be the one to give you that, because I love you. I never stopped.

Angie: I understand your concerns, but this is my sight we're talking about.

Tad: No, Angela, it's David Hayward we're talking about.

Angie: Do you think I trust David Hayward? But if there is even the smallest chance that I could someday see my daughter's smile --

Tad: You have to take it. Just promise me you'll be careful.

Angie: I promise.

Tad: Hey, I want to ask you a question. Have you talked to Jake lately?

Angie: Earlier today. Can you keep a secret?

Tad: Do I rock at pinball, the answer being yes.

Angie: Jake's been talking about a vacation with Amanda to get them back on track, but now he's going to whisk her away as a surprise.

Tad: Whisk -- what are you saying? Amanda doesn't know about it?

Angie: What, you don't think it's a good idea?

Tad: I think there's too many secrets going around as it is. And sooner or later, somebody is gonna get burned.

Cara: So what exactly did you tell her?

Jake: What I told her was that someone had told me that that was your new post out there, in this tent, and I brought you some files. So, yes, I have been out there.

Cara: Did you tell her anything about what happened between --

Jake: No. Are you kidding? I could never tell her what went down with us. She'd be devastated.

[Amanda overhears from around the corner]

Erica: Ben? Ben, please come back. I know it's difficult, but you have to let it out. I'm just trying to help you.

Ben: You can't help me. No one can.

David: I know what it's like.

Jane: You do? You've lost a child?

David: Yes, I have. Two, actually -- Leora, my infant daughter, and Babe. It feels like yesterday, but, really, it's been a few years now. It's like losing a part of yourself, the most important part, your heart.
