Judge: I hereby sentence Greenlee Hayward to life in prison for the murder of David Hayward. I order that Mrs. Hayward be taken into custody immediately.
Jack: Your honor.
Judge: Court adjourned!
Jack: Just give her a minute. Just give her a minute.
Officer: Take your hands off me and get out of the way, sir.
Ryan: I love you.
Officer: Let's go.
Ryan: Greenlee? Greenlee, just -- Greenlee, I love you.
[Crowd murmuring]
David: I'm back, for you.
Ryan: You son of a bitch.
Judge: Order! Order!
Jesse: Whoa, whoa, Ryan!
Ryan: I should've known, you son of a bitch!
Judge: I want everyone to take their seats.
Jack: You better not have known about this.
Liza: Are you kidding me? This is unbelievable!
Jack: Your honor, I move to vacate the verdict against my client. Her alleged murder victim is alive and well.
Judge: Oh, that much I can see, Counselor.
Jack: Then you can see this whole trial has been a farce. Clearly, he staged his own death --
Liza: There is absolutely nothing clear about this!
Judge: Oh, I'd have to agree with you on that one, Counselor. Motion denied until I get some answers.
Ryan: Please. You stay away from her, Hayward. Stay away from her. You stay away from her. You understand that?
Greenlee: It's you.
David: Yes, it's me.
Judge: Bailiff, bring that man up to me now.
Greenlee: This is real?
David: I assure you it's not a dream.
Greenlee: More like a nightmare.
Judge: Bailiff, now!
David: Your honor, I'm sorry for this disturbance, but if I could please just have a moment alone with my wife --
Ryan: You don't deserve to be in the same room as her let alone have a --
Judge: If you don't approach the bench now, I will hold you in contempt!
David: Looks like your little catch-up session is gonna have to wait.
Bailiff: Come on.
Greenlee: What did you do?
Judge: Mrs. Hayward, take a seat at the defense table.
Greenlee: I buried you. I grieved.
David: I know.
Greenlee: You bastard.
Judge: Looks like you've got some explaining to do.
David: And I'm prepared to tell you everything.
Kendall: Zach, how am I supposed to do this without you? [Crying]
Judge: I'm waiting, Dr. Hayward, if it's really you. I believe we all are.
Ryan: Your honor, can we get the handcuffs off of Greenlee? Obviously, she's innocent.
Judge: I'm afraid it's not that simple.
Jake: Greenlee didn't kill anybody.
Judge: There has been an official ruling, a verdict. These things can't be magically overturned.
Jack: Your honor, then what do you say we have a post-verdict hearing? You take the stand, swear an oath, and clear my daughter's name.
Judge: Counselor, how about you leave the orders to me? You should consult your own legal counsel before you say another word.
David: It's not necessary, your honor.
Judge: Anything you say can be used against you. Do you understand that?
David: Yes, I do.
Judge: Do you have any form of identification?
David: I got this out of my safe-deposit box.
Judge: All right, you can remove the cuffs, please. Bailiff, swear this man in.
Liza: Your honor, this is highly irregular.
Judge: I understand your concern, Counselor, but what about this trial hasn't been irregular? The decedent is clearly alive.
Greenlee: How can this be?
Ryan: I know. I know. It's gonna be ok. It's gonna be ok.
Bailiff: Place your hand on the Bible. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
David: I do.
Tad: Something wrong?
Krystal: I was just so caught up, I didn't even think about Marissa.
Tad: Come on. I'll go with you.
Krystal: No. I think I should handle this myself.
David: David Hayward.
Tad: Good luck.
David: That's right, folks. Back from the great beyond.
Greenlee: You think this is funny? A man is dead because of you. A good man. My friend. Did you know that?
David: Yes. I heard about Zach, and I'm sorry. I never wanted that.
Greenlee: I don't give a damn what you wanted. Zach is gone, and it's your fault.
David: I know how much he meant to you, Greenlee, but I had nothing to do with that.
Greenlee: Go to hell.
David: Greenlee, I truly am sorry for what happened to Zach, for everything that happened to you.
Ryan: Are you kidding me? What happened -- you did this, Hayward. you almost ruined her.
Judge: Order! I want order!
Jack: Your honor, with all due respect, Greenlee's friends -- they're rightfully incensed. I mean, here sits David Hayward, obviously alive, while she's been sentenced to life in prison for his murder?
Judge: You have a point, Counselor.
Ryan: You're sorry, huh?
David: Yes.
Ryan: Then where have you been? You claim to love Greenlee so much.
David: I do.
Ryan: Then why? Why did you do all of this?
David: Because you couldn't stay away from my wife.
Marissa: What is it? What happened this time?
Judge: Facts, Dr. Hayward. That's all I'm interested in.
David: Do you really need me to spell this out for you, your honor? The man wanted my wife.
Ryan: What I wanted was her away from you.
David: You made Greenlee believe that you could give her the world, while destroying mine in the process. Did you really think that you could get her to forget about her horrible accident, all the pain and suffering you caused? I was the one who saved her life, not you.
Greenlee: Oh, my God.
David: It was supposed to be Ryan behind that table today, Greenlee, rotting behind bars for the rest of his life, not you. It was never supposed to be you. I could never hurt you, Greenlee. That's why I'm here today, because I would rather lose my own freedom than watch you lose yours.
Kendall: I can't go in there, our bedroom. I just can't.
Bianca: You're feeling numb right now?
Kendall: I have no idea what I'm feeling.
Bianca: You can cry and throw things, break things, scream.
Kendall: If I do that, I may never stop.
David: I knew I was losing her because every instinct in my being was screaming to fight back. I knew it. I could feel the distance, the pull between her and Ryan. Then I was forced to sit there and watch while he drew her in, got under her skin, made his intentions clear.
Judge: And what were those intentions?
David: To steal Greenlee away from me, keep her all for himself.
Greenlee's voice: Whatever happens, you will always have a special place in my heart. I want you to be happy, Ryan. I really do.
David: I love my wife, without limit, without boundaries. To experience something like that, then have it ripped away -- so I knew what I had to do. If I couldn't have Greenlee, well, Ryan couldn't have her either.
Liza: Your honor, somebody needs to remind this witness of his Fifth-Amendment rights.
David: Thank you, Liza, for your defense, for everything. But incriminating myself today is the least of my problems.
Judge: Please continue.
David: Losing Greenlee to Ryan was never an option. At this point, neither was keeping her, so I did the only thing I felt I could do. If I were to die and Lavery found responsible, I could go on, live my life, somewhere else in secret. Because at the very least, I would know that Ryan also couldn't have her. And that's what I call justice.
Jesse: Are you kidding me? Justice? Did you just say "justice"? I had to investigate friends of mine, my family! I had to take Greenlee to jail, because in my line of work, justice comes first. That word has no business crossing those lying lips of yours.
Judge: That's enough, Chief Hubbard.
Jesse: Justice.
Jack: Your honor, with your indulgence I'd like to ask Dr. Hayward a few questions.
Judge: I would just like to remind you to keep your temper in check, Counselor. The facts are what we're after.
Jack: Let me just see if I've got this straight. So you set Ryan up, you let Greenlee go, and then you were going to just leave Pine Valley without looking back? Is that right?
David: I never said it would be easy.
Marissa: David's alive?
Krystal: Yes.
Marissa: What is wrong with him? Seriously, someone has to help me understand this, because this is -- God! Knowing what I went through with my parents, knowing that kind of loss myself, and then he makes me think --
Krystal: I know. But trying to understand David, you might as well beat your head up against a wall. Where are you going?
Marissa: I need to see him.
Krystal: I think you just need to sit with this for a while, all right? Don't go in there.
Marissa: No, I need to see David. Now.
David: I had to make it look like I was dead. It was the only way to pull this off. I found an herbal compound that slows the heartbeat down, lowers blood pressure to nearly undetectable levels. It's infamous in Turkey for its ability to induce an apparently mortal paralysis.
Jake: That's just fascinating.
David: As you can see, it fit my needs to a tee. Oh, don't beat yourself up for missing it, Martin. It could happen to any mediocre doctor.
Jack: So we understand the motive now and how you faked the medical part. What about the rest?
David: I needed a forum, a public arena for a very public death. Caleb Cooney handed me one on a silver platter. Once I had the how and the where, everything else fell right into place. My wife and I were going to a party. She had some big plans with Ryan Lavery. Little did she know I had plans, too. One drug to make you all think I was dead, another -- digitalis -- to make it look like murder. Patience was key. Excruciating, but key. So I just sat back and waited for exactly the right moment. Quite the position to be in, I could tell you that. In a few short hours, I'd be gone, and Christmas would come early for the lot of you. Marissa. Sweetheart.
[Marissa walks up to David and slaps him hard]
Kendall: Shouldn't it be hitting me like a bullet? Shouldn't I know that a piece of me broke off and fell into the ocean?
Bianca: Everybody deals with grief differently.
Kendall: Can I just be by myself right now?
Bianca: Sure.
Marissa: How could you? What is wrong with you?
Judge: Take her out of here.
David: Your honor, please. She's my daughter. She deserves to hear this.
David: Marissa --
Marissa: Don't say my name. Don't say anything. I went to your funeral! I cried over your casket! I said good-bye to another father! But I didn't have to because, look, here you are! What kind of a man does that to his own daughter?!
David: I am sorry I hurt you so much. That was the hardest part for me, Marissa, having to say good-bye to you. I love you.
Marissa: Stop! Stop! Stop!
David: I am sorry that I caused you so much pain.
Marissa: This isn't something you get to apologize for. There is no excuse for what you did. And if you had any feelings for me at all, you never, ever would've gone through with it.
David: You have every right to be angry.
Marissa: Thank you so much for granting me permission!
David: That's not what I'm doing.
Marissa: Do you have any idea what it was like for me, for A.J.?
David: Yes, I do, because I was there.
Marissa: What?!
David: I was at the funeral.
Jack: Wait, so after your supposed death, you stayed in Pine Valley?
David: I wasn't here for long. I just couldn't leave right away. But I watched you, Marissa. I watched you with A.J. You were so kind, you were so empathetic, and it broke my heart.
Marissa: And I know that wherever Grandpa David is, that he is looking out for you.
A.J.: I wish he wasn't dead.
Marissa: I do, too. But you know something? The people we love are always there -- in our dreams, in our prayers. I know that Grandpa David loved you very much.
David: I so wanted to comfort you. I just didn't know how.
Marissa: You didn't know how? How about, "Hey, Marissa, hey, A.J., look, I'm sorry to worry you, but I'm not dead"? That probably would've worked.
David: You know I couldn't do that.
Marissa: No, David. All I know is that you are beyond screwed up. You punish people, David, for not appreciating you the way that you think you deserve. What is that? I'm done with you, with your whole twisted world. I am done. You were dead to me already, so do me a favor and stay that way.
David: Enjoying yourselves? Well, I'm glad I could provide the entertainment: But don't get so comfortable on your high horses, because I saw all of you drinking to my death, toasting my demise. You're all nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.
Frankie: Anybody with the name "Hubbard" had a target on their back.
Jake: And with my family, the Martins.
Amanda: He tried to claim our son as his.
Jake: Who does that?
Kendall: The way he played with people's lives -- it's messed up. He played with all of us.
Jake: Poisoning him was too easy.
Judge: When I said to stick to the facts, I meant that. You're here to put facts on the record, not air your personal grievances.
Jack: I think I'm pretty sure I speak for everyone here when I say that what we'd really like to hear about is the night of the party. How did you put this plan of yours into action?
David: In order for this to work, Lavery had to be angry. We all know what kind of a hothead he is, so that wasn't too difficult. All I had to do was make Greenlee feel like she was cornered. I told her she had to leave the country with me that very night, and that did it. Presto. Buttons pushed. Lavery came running to defend her honor, just like I knew he would. You should be rotting in a cell right now.
Ryan: And you should be rotting in hell. I should've killed you when I had the chance.
Bianca: Hey. Hey, did you go in?
Kendall: Where are the boys?
Bianca: Mom put them down for their naps.
Kendall: Why didn't you want me to see?
Bianca: What?
Kendall: The computer. You shut it when I walked down the stairs. Was it a story on Zach?
Bianca: No.
Kendall: Because if it is, I want to see it.
Bianca: We'll talk about this later.
Kendall: No, Binks, please. Please, no secrets. Not now.
Bianca: David Hayward.
Kendall: David? Well, he's -- this whole thing started with him. He's the reason -- what is it? Tell me.
Bianca: I'm not sure how to tell you this.
David: Like I said, once Lavery was hooked, he'd come looking for me. I knew it, and I was ready. Get off me!
Ryan: What did you do to her?!
David: Why don't we talk about what you did, all right? Filling her head with all these lies, all these promises, making her believe that she doesn't need me anymore, that I'm not good for her!
Ryan: Are you kidding me, Hayward? What have you done? You blackmailed her. You brought her back to life for the sole purpose to own her like she's some kind of possession! You are sick, and she deserves somebody so much better than you.
David: You mean someone like you, right?
Ryan: I'm not talking about me! This has never been about me and her. This is just about her getting the hell away from you.
David: You will never take her away from me. Do you understand that? Get this through your thick skull! Greenlee is mine. Greenlee will always be mine!
[After Ryan punches David, he hits Ryan in the head with a board and knocks him unconscious; then he takes the drug]
David: Good-bye, Greenlee. I did love you, and I always will. You could ask anyone in this room what happened next. I went straight to the dance floor, fell over the railing, and collapsed at Caleb's feet. That's when the drug took full effect.
Caleb: Somebody call 911!
David: Eventually, I lost consciousness --
Jake: He's gone.
David: But not before I heard reactions. Yours especially is ingrained in my mind. There was no way you could've faked that.
Greenlee: Faked what?
David: The pain in your voice when you realized I was gone.
Greenlee: How did we get here? I don't want this to be over. Not here like this.
David: So there I was, tag on my toe, dead to everyone who had ever known me -- well, almost everyone. I discovered that Pine Valley's trusty medical examiner, Cliff Brown, had a nasty gambling habit. So with a little incentive, he has willing to play along, take care of the body. He administered the herbal treatments to keep me dead. And after the autopsy, he pronounced my cause of death -- overdose on digitalis. I did eventually get out of the hospital. I laid low while arrangements were made for my funeral -- not exactly the turnout I had expected, but at least the people who mattered were there. And that was my life, or should I say my death, wrapped up in a nice, neat bow. so now it's a time for phase two. Lavery would be found with the drug that killed me, promptly sent to prison, and Greenlee would be forced to live her life without us. Well, that was the plan, anyway. But we all know how plans sometimes change. I heard you when you came to see me, the pain in your voice.
Greenlee: It was real.
David: But even then, even while you were there mourning me, your primary concern was Ryan. And that was like a knife to my heart, Greenlee. Because I loved you, Greenlee, so much. And even then, you were there protecting the one reason that I couldn't have you.
Greenlee's voice: You took care of me like no one else ever has. I did love you for that. I just couldn't give you what you wanted or what you needed -- all of me. Now you're gone. Maybe because, like you, Ryan wanted to save me, too.
Cliff: I'm sorry, Mrs. Hayward. I need to get started.
David: [Coughs and shakes violently as he awakens] Ryan. Ryan. Ohh. Damn him.
Greenlee: Poor, poor David. You got all upset, and for what? Because I said Ryan's name? You're such a fool. I loved you once. I truly did, and I wasn't leaving you for Ryan. He had moved on, and I respected that. I was leaving you for me, because what we had had turned into something ugly and suffocating and I needed to get out. Me. But you know what the best part about this whole thing is, David? Ryan and I wouldn't be together if it wasn't for your sick plan. So thank you, really, from the bottom of my heart. Everything you did to pull us apart pushed us together. You created your own nightmare.
David: It's all right. Go ahead. Lash out. Hate me. Maybe I even deserve it.
Greenlee: "Maybe"?
David: Ok, but don't insult my intelligence. All right? I know what I saw between you and Lavery. No matter what action I took, the two of you together was inevitable. I warned you not to let me love you, Greenlee.
Greenlee: Oh, oh, so this is my fault?
David: I told you that I could never let you go. And then there you were, slipping away. What was I supposed to do? If you believe anything, believe this. My goal was never to hurt you. It was always supposed to be Lavery who would suffer, not you. When the news broke of your arrest, I couldn't wrap my head around it. It made no sense. But I had already left Pine Valley, and fixing things from a distance was next to impossible. I had no control, and I hated it.
[Knock on door]
Bellhop: Good morning, Mr. Ivans. You sure do keep up with the news, sir. [Hands him newspapers]
David: Thank you. Thank you. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that it had backfired like this. The only possible explanation, you were protecting him. You must've found the drug in Ryan's pocket and held on to it to make sure that he didn't go to prison. How you got caught, I have no idea, but there it was. And as much as it killed me to watch you save my murderer, I couldn't stand by and watch you sacrifice yourself. I hired a man. His name was Nick Pearson. I'm pretty sure most of you know him by now. I hired him to plant the vial of digitalis. He had history with Lavery, none of it good. So he was unreliable. So after your trial started, it took some arm-twisting to get him to come back here, try to fix things, finish things off the way that I had paid him to do. But even that didn't work out well, as you all know. He just kept shooting off his mouth. He rushed my plan. So I had to shift gears, and fast. It was then that it really hit me. My wife could be convicted, sentenced to life. Something had to be done. My life is about you, Greenlee. And I'm not the kind of man who ever gives up.
Ryan: Are you really doing this right now, Hayward? I'm sorry, your honor, but, please, I got to get this out. Please. After everything that we've heard today, may I, please? You actually think that you're the hero in all this, right? I mean, you are so unbelievably delusional. You created this. You got the ball rolling. You don't even realize that. You forget how warped you are. You forget how far you let this go. You almost let Greenlee go down for something that she didn't do -- actually that nobody did!
David: I'm here, aren't I?
Ryan: So what? Better late than never?
David: I would never let Greenlee go down for something that wasn't her fault.
Greenlee: And I'm supposed to thank you for that? Are you insane?
Liza: Your honor, this turning into a free-for-all.
Judge: Order. Order!
Ryan: So this is all my fault? I'm the bad guy?
David: Admit it, right? Stealing another man's wife doesn't exactly make you good, right?
Tad: And you wouldn't know a thing about that, would you, Dave?
Ryan: You were blackmailing her. I didn't have to do anything. She came to me.
Jake: You're a piece of garbage. You know that?
Judge: Bailiff, please!
David: Gang on evil incarnate.
Judge: I will clear this courtroom --
David: Come on! Admit it! You all missed your life-size punching bag, right?
Kendall: You.
Greenlee: Kendall.
Kendall: You. All of this is happening because of you.
David: I'm sorry about Zach.
Kendall: You think you're sorry now? You just wait.
Judge: I will not allow threats in my courtroom.
Kendall: My husband went to go help a friend. He wanted to stay home with me and the boys, but he went anyway. We thought Greenlee was fighting for her life!
David: Zach getting hurt was never part of the plan.
Kendall: He's not hurt! He's not hurt! He's -- he is gone! He is gone forever! He won't be there for either of our sons ever, and that is your fault, and I want you! I want you to own that! No! No! No! No. I want you to sit with that guilt for the rest of your life! And I want it to eat you alive from the inside out until there is nothing left! Nothing! And then maybe you will know how I feel.
Greenlee: Please, please. She needs me.
Jack: Your honor, haven't we heard enough here today?
Judge: Motion to vacate the verdict is granted. I assume you're gonna be dropping all charges?
Liza: Yes, your honor.
Judge: The defendant is free to go. Chief, this hearing is adjourned.
Ryan: Go with Kendall. I'll stay with David. Don't even think about it, Hayward.
Jesse: David Hayward, you're under arrest for conspiracy, for fraud, for evidence tampering, so far. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you --
Tad: I could use a drink.
Jake: Yeah. Yeah. Count us in.
Jesse: If you need an attorney and can't afford one, one will be provided for you free of charge.
Krystal: Congratulations, Counselor, you did it.
Jack: I didn't do anything.
Krystal: We both know that's not true. But either way Greenlee is free. Hey. It's finally over.
Jack: No, it's not. It's not over until I'm absolutely sure that Hayward can never hurt my daughter again.
David: So what are we waiting for, hmm? You hoping someone will take the law into their own hands?
Jesse: Tempting, but no. We're waiting here for your ride to the station.
David: And if you're waiting for an apology, you'll be waiting till your dying breath. When it comes to you, I'm just sorry your sorry ass isn't behind bars.
Ryan: And I'm just sorry you're still walking this earth. Hey, I guess prison isn't so bad, right? While you're in there, at least you're safe from me.
Greenlee: Kendall! I know it's not enough, not even close, but I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.
