Singer: I don't think you could do me wrong you'd like to hurt your favorite son
Frankie: Didn't you hear about the new ban on cell phones at all Pine Valley social events? Madison?
Madison: Sorry. What'd you say?
Frankie: Something wrong?
Madison: I'm not sure.
Liza: I can't leave? Why?
Kendall: Because. Because the Liza Colby I know would never let a man keep her from enjoying a party. I mean, what are you gonna do, Liza? Every time there's a picnic or a barbecue or a dinner, you're gonna leave the second Tad walks in the room?
Liza: If that's what I want to do, yes. What I want to know here is, why do you care?
Colby: Wow. Being your wingman is gonna be way easy.
Asher: Huh. I don't need a wingman. I'm not looking to pick anyone up.
Colby: Well, they're gonna come looking for you. So, why did you lie?
Asher: About what?
Colby: You said you didn't own a tux.
Asher: It's a rental.
Colby: It doesn't look like a rental.
Asher: Do I look like the type of guy who owns a tux? This is my first time even wearing one. I feel like a waiter.
Colby: Oh, we have to go. I told Damon I would be there for his first break.
Asher: You sure Damon's cool with us going together?
Colby: We're not "going together." We're just going.
Asher: Together.
Colby: Right.
Asher: Got it.
J.R.: Whoa!
Colby: Hi.
J.R.: Don't let me stop you.
Colby: Um, J.R., have you met Asher?
J.R.: Yeah. You were hanging around the house yesterday.
Colby: Well, as my guest.
J.R.: And you're here today. So tell me, is it my sister or our family's house you can't get enough of?
Guard: Ms. Colby? Is that you?
[Keys jingle]
Opal: Say, you are gonna be the talk of the town after tonight's shindig, Mister.
Bianca: You've really outdone yourself.
Krystal: See? I told you they'd love it.
Caleb: People love free booze.
Bianca: Oh, gosh. Can you just enjoy this for one minute, at least for the sake of the charity? The contributions to the Miranda Center are pouring in.
Caleb: That's a good thing.
Opal: Yeah. The buttons would be popping off of Palmer's vest, I guarantee.
Bianca: That's right.
Caleb: I'm just wondering when everybody's gonna go home.
Damon: Would you like one? Mr. Cooney?
Opal: Thank you. Look at my grandson! Doesn't he look handsome tonight?
Krystal: He sure does!
Damon: Maybe next time I'll be eating the food instead of serving it.
Opal: Ohh.
Greenlee: You want to leave tonight?
David: Yeah. Right after the party. Is that a problem?
Greenlee: Well, we'll be so exhausted. Why don't we leave in the morning when we're both rested? And besides, I'll be a much better travel partner if I'm less sleep-deprived. Ow. David, you're hurting me.
David: I know, Greenlee. Everything. I saw you in the park with Ryan, laughing, laughing at me. All this time, everything you've done, everything you said, has been one big lie.
Guard: Miller, you there?
Miller: Miller here.
Guard: Anything?
Miller: Uh, must be mice.
Guard: All right, check the floor above. We'll cover the one below.
Miller: Copy that.
Ryan: Now all I got to do is figure out which drawer this opens.
Kendall: You're right. There is no reason why I should care about your love life, except for Zach.
Liza: Zach?
Kendall: I told you he agreed to move back to Pine Valley.
Liza: Ok. What does that have to do with me?
Kendall: Do you really have to ask?
Liza: Actually, I do.
Kendall: Ok. How would you feel if the woman who had an affair with your husband was suddenly available again?
Liza: Really? Is that really what this is all about? You're afraid that me and Zach are gonna revisit our fling? Because that's all it was, Kendall, a fling.
Kendall: Ok. Well, maybe you could explain to me in detail why you're so sure of that, and I would get the assurance I need.
Liza: I think you need a shrink, or a marriage counselor.
Kendall: I'm just fine, thank you.
Liza: I don't think you are. I said I was gonna leave. I'm leaving.
Kendall: Come on, Ryan, pick up the phone.
Greenlee: Whatever you think you saw or heard --
David: Stop. Don't insult me any more than you already have.
Greenlee: I'm not trying to insult you.
David: When I think of all the times over these past few weeks that you told that you were trying, how genuine you seemed when you told me that you wanted to get back to the closeness we once had, was any of it real, or was it one big lie right from the beginning? Maybe we should discuss this further over a drink, but not here.
Greenlee: Why not?
David: I don't think you want everyone to overhear what I have to say.
Singer: From a wounded soul I can't hide my pain I won't even put on a fake smile can't put the time of the day I'm stuck in this --
David: I never thought you would do this to me. You know, after everything we've been through together, to know that you never meant a single word.
Greenlee: You've been blackmailing me.
David: If you ever believed in us, you never would've pushed me so far to do that. I did it so that --
Greenlee: You did it for us, right?
David: Did you ever -- did you ever love me? I guess that's my answer, right?
Greenlee: I'm glad this is happening. Because you're right. What we had was all a lie, one that gets more twisted by the day. But now it's been blown out of the water, so maybe it's time we face the truth about us. We're over, you and I. We're finished. And if we drop the games and pretense and walk away now, maybe we'll both be better off for it.
David: Listen to me. I'm not going anywhere, and neither are you.
Colby: Excuse my brother. He's protective over his family. FYI, Asher is the reason I am walking today.
J.R.: What are you talking about?
Colby: He saved me.
Asher: You wouldn't have fallen.
Colby: No, I totally would've fallen.
J.R.: Fallen from what?
Colby: You know that rooftop Daddy always took us to when he wanted us to see how much Chandler owned in Pine Valley? Well, I went up there, and I was standing there looking over the ledge at Pine Valley, and, well, the railing wasn't as sturdy as I remember. And when I leaned over, the railing went, and I almost went with it, but Asher caught me.
J.R.: What were you doing on the roof?
Asher: Taking in the town.
J.R.: Uh-huh.
Colby: Oh, and Asher is also the reason I'm considering working for Chandler.
J.R.: You're gonna take the job?
Colby: Well, I shouldn't after the way you just treated my friend.
J.R.: Huh. It's a brother's prerogative to check in on someone.
Colby: Well, if the offer still stands and you apologize for being so rude, I'm in.
J.R.: I think it's terrific.
Colby: Yeah?
J.R.: You're gonna be fantastic. And I owe you.
Colby: Oh, we should go. The party's gonna start. See you later?
J.R.: Mm-hmm. Hey, Colby? I think it's great that you're on board with the job.
Colby: Me, too. Bye.
J.R.: Have fun.
Colby: Thanks.
[Phone rings]
J.R.: Hello? Is anybody there? Hello?
Tad: Yeah, I'm here. I'm wondering why you're not.
J.R.: Tad. Hey, I can barely hear you.
Tad: Then why don't you put on a tux, come down to the Yacht Club, and we can talk in person?
J.R.: You know, I think I'm gonna pass, ok? I've got work to do.
Tad: Come on, J.R., live a little.
J.R.: I am living. I'm living plenty. Really, I'm fine.
Tad: No, nobody's fine when their marriage is tanking.
J.R.: [Sighs] You're not gonna give up, are you?
Tad: Nope. And if you hang up on me, I'm just gonna come over there and harass you in person.
J.R.: Ok. Ok. I'll come.
Tad: That's my boy. I'll be waiting for you.
Singer: Your words the truest part of me and the only thing I don't know how to be
Caleb: Hmm.
Bianca: Opal is right about Palmer. I just wish he were here to see all this.
Caleb: So do I. Then I wouldn't have to be here.
Bianca: You don't fool me. You don't hate this half as much as you act like you do.
Caleb: What do you mean by that?
Bianca: Hmm. I don't know. You look sort of proud.
Caleb: I would rather be back at the house chasing Miranda around the living room.
Bianca: Thanks to you, Miranda's ok. I am gonna go check on her pretty soon, actually.
Caleb: Want to swap?
Bianca: This is a wonderful party, and Uncle Pete would be proud. Now, stop complaining and start showing everyone you're not as scary as they think you are.
Caleb: Thank you.
Greenlee: David, you're hurting me.
David: I'm hurting you? You're kidding right?
Greenlee: Please let go of me.
David: I am not gonna do that. I warned you, Greenlee. I warned you what would happen if you let me fall in love with you, that it would bond us forever. Didn't I say that?
Greenlee: The only thing bonding us is this so-called evidence that you have linking me to Erica's plane crash. But once I get my hands on it --
David: No, no, no, you're not getting your hands on anything, not even with Ryan's help. Yeah, I know all about that, too! Lavery's just itching to play hero again, but you're gonna get him to back off.
Greenlee: You know I can't force Ryan to do something he doesn't want to do.
David: Greenlee, you better try. Because we both know he has no business being involved in our life at all, and he needs to know that, too. You get that?
Greenlee: Is that a threat? Are you threatening to hurt Ryan?
Colby: Ever been to a party like this before?
Asher: Not since last Tuesday.
Colby: Well, Pine Valley is known for them.
Asher: What's the deal with the Cooney guy?
Colby: Oh, his uncle hated my dad. They've had an ongoing war for decades. J.R. screwed over Caleb, and now Caleb wants to get J.R. back. I don't know.
Asher: What started the whole --
Colby: Oh, oh, there's Damon.
Damon: Hi. [Kiss]
Colby: Oh. I didn't just get you in trouble, did I?
Damon: I don't care if you did. That's the best thing that's happened to me all night.
Colby: You have a break soon, right?
Damon: A break? No, no. No break. This caterer is a drill sergeant. Look. She's giving me the evil eye right now. I better keep moving. I'll find you guys later.
Colby: Ok. We should dance. Yes.
Krystal: Hmm. You are not so bad.
Caleb: You sound surprised.
Krystal: I didn't think you'd be so light on your feet.
Caleb: You're telling me I don't look graceful?
Krystal: Ha ha ha! You know, you probably should be gathering everybody up to say a few things, right?
Caleb: I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna say. Maybe I should just run up there and scream like a crazy mountain man. That's what they're expecting.
Krystal: You mean you're not a crazy mountain man? [Chuckles]
Caleb: Hey, hey, hey, hey. Watch where you're going, pal.
Asher: Sorry, sir.
Singer: Everything was real
Frankie: Ohh. Are you gonna tell me why Ryan isn't with you when he's supposed to be your date, or you want me to guess?
Madison: He had an errand to run.
Frankie: And he couldn't pick up his phone? I assume that's who you were trying to reach earlier.
Madison: Maybe he was out of signal range. He'll be back soon.
Greenlee: Are you threatening Ryan?
David: I don't give a damn about Ryan! I'm the one standing right in front of you, and I'm telling you right now I am not letting you go, no matter how much you've hurt me!
Greenlee: It's over, David.
David: No, no, Greenlee, it's not over. It doesn't end like this. It doesn't end with you walking away and me letting you go.
Greenlee: Promise me that you won't hurt Ryan.
David: Oh, man, Ryan again. You're still worried about him? What if something happened to him by accident? Hmm? Kind of like his aneurysm? You gonna blame me again for that?
Greenlee: Nothing will happen to him, though, will it?
David: Well, Greenlee, it's a very dangerous world out there, isn't it?
Greenlee: How could I have ever loved you? How could I have ever believed you were a decent person?
David: You're not thinking clearly right now. You will once we're gone, ok?
Greenlee: You think I'm going away with you?
David: You're damn right you're going away with me. Because you get it, Greenlee. You understand that I will never let you go.
Kendall: Hey, where have you been? I just saw David walk through. Wait, wait, wait, Greenlee. There's something that you need to know.
Greenlee: What?
Kendall: It's not good.
Greenlee: What?
Kendall: Liza left.
Greenlee: You were supposed to keep her here.
Kendall: Yes, I know. I did everything I could. I pulled out every stop I could think of, but nothing worked.
Greenlee: What if she goes back to her office?
Kendall: I know this. I tried calling Ryan, but he didn't pick up.
Greenlee: Forget it. I'll handle this.
Ryan: What do we have here? [Finds the box that fits his key]
[Elevator doors close]
Liza: [Gasps] Oh, Ryan! What -- what are you doing here?
Ryan: Breaking into your office.
Liza: Yeah. Ok. Why?
Ryan: To get the evidence that David gave you to falsely implicate Greenlee in Erica's plane crash.
Liza: I don't know what you're talking about.
Ryan: Yeah, you do, Liza. Come on. Come on. We've known each other a long time. We've been on the same side of more than one fight, ok?
Liza: Ryan, you shouldn't have come here.
Ryan: What is it about Hayward that gets you to throw your judgment out the window like that?
Liza: He happens to be a client.
Ryan: Why? Why would you help the most hated guy in Pine Valley when you could help so many other people by going against him?
Liza: And how would I do that?
Ryan: By giving me the evidence that he gave you.
Liza: And why would I do that?
Ryan: Because he's using it to blackmail Greenlee. She's innocent, Liza. She had nothing to do with Erica's plane. It was David, ok? So please give me the evidence. Please. We both know it's the right thing to do here.
[Phone rings]
Liza: Ahem. It's for you.
Ryan: Hello?
Greenlee: Get out of there. Now.
Ryan: Why? What happened?
Greenlee: I don't want your help anymore.
Ryan: Greenlee, talk to me. Ok, stay where you are. I'm coming right there.
Liza: I don't think we finished this conversation.
Ryan: Yeah, I think we did.
Kendall: Hey. What are you doing out here?
Caleb: I'm trying to remember what a life of solitude is like.
Kendall: Before my mother crashed her plane into your house?
Caleb: Mm-hmm.
Kendall: What? Heh heh!
Caleb: You remind me of her. What about you? What brings you out here?
Kendall: I'm just waiting to hear from a friend.
Caleb: Everything all right?
Kendall: I hope so. I -- I better get back to the party.
Caleb: Yeah, me, too. I've got to make a speech. Shall we?
Kendall: Yeah, I guess. Let's go.
J.R.: So tell me --
Asher: Asher.
J.R.: Asher, right, right -- how'd you get my sister to come work for me at Chandler Enterprises?
Asher: I just said when your family needs you, you need to step up.
J.R.: Hmm. Is that how it is with your family?
Asher: Not exactly. You?
J.R.: Chandlers? We've got each other's backs -- that is, when we're not plunging knives into them.
Asher: [Chuckles] So your dad -- he's like the head honcho?
J.R.: He used to be. Not anymore. So I guess I owe you one, huh?
Asher: You could pay me back by hiring me.
J.R.: Hiring you?
Asher: I need a job.
J.R.: My sister said that you were just passing through Pine Valley.
Asher: The right gig could convince me to stay.
J.R.: Oh, yeah? What kind of gig?
Asher: Well, I'm not gonna lie. I'm young and have little to no work experience, but I'm pretty good at computers.
[Colby laughs]
J.R.: Tell me, Asher, what's your interest in my sister?
Asher: We're friends. Just -- just friends.
J.R.: Tell you what, call my office. I'll see what I can do.
Asher: Will do.
Greenlee: Ryan, I know you said you were on your way over here, but you need to stay away.
Madison: Oh. I got to go. Hey, stranger.
Ryan: Hey, hey. I got a little bit of a situation.
Madison: I called you before, but you didn't pick up.
Ryan: Oh, that was you?
Madison: Yeah. I was worried when you didn't answer.
Ryan: I'm sorry. I will explain everything. I promise I will. But right now I got to deal with something first, ok?
Greenlee: Not now.
Ryan: Wait. Whoa. Whoa. What is going on?
Greenlee: I told you I don't want your help.
Ryan: What changed?
Greenlee: It doesn't matter. Just stay out of it from now on.
Ryan: Greenlee, I deserve more than this, ok?
Greenlee: I decided to stay with David, ok?
[David goes to his room and takes off his wedding ring]
Ryan: I can't believe that.
Greenlee: It's the truth. I'm staying with David, and I'm not going to change my mind.
Ryan: Greenlee, that cannot be what you want.
Greenlee: What I want is a life without drama and turmoil. I want to stop living in fear of the next shoe dropping.
Ryan: And you think you're gonna get that being with Hayward?
Greenlee: You know, even if we find the evidence that David has trumped up against me, he's too smart not to have a backup plan.
Ryan: Ok. So we'll get a counterattack.
Greenlee: It's not like I never cared about him. The man saved my life, so maybe I should take David at his word and trust that he's doing what's best for me.
Ryan: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop right now. You do not believe one word that is coming out of your mouth right now.
Greenlee: I'm not going to try to convince you.
Ryan: Look at me. He got to you.
Greenlee: No.
Ryan: You're lying. Somehow he's convinced you that this is the only way, and it's not, Greenlee. That's not the only way, ok, as long as you're with me.
Greenlee: Ryan, just stay out of it.
Ryan: What did he say? Did Liza get to him?
Greenlee: This was my decision.
Ryan: Ok. If I'm not gonna get the truth out of you, I will get it someplace else.
Greenlee: Ryan, no. Please don't -- go.
Iris: Ms. Colby?
Liza: Ah, Mayor. This isn't a good time.
Iris: It might be.
Liza: I don't understand.
Iris: I just spoke with the governor, who signed off on your appointment as interim district attorney. That is, if your hat is still in the ring?
Liza: Uh, I -- I don't believe it.
Iris: Why not? You've built a prestigious practice for yourself. You have friends in the right places. David Hayward has spoken very highly of you.
Liza: David?
Iris: And you obviously have been a good friend to him.
Liza: Hmm.
Iris: Now he's returned the favor. I'm not hearing a yes.
Liza: Mayor, meet your new district attorney.
Tad: It's about time. Another couple of minutes, I was gonna come over personally and kidnap you.
J.R.: Well, no need to worry about me. I'm feeling good.
Tad: Why?
J.R.: For starters, I'll be running Chandler solo.
Tad: What about Scott?
J.R.: Ah, my cousin's showing signs of not being able to cut it at the top.
Tad: Does he know that?
J.R.: In his heart.
Tad: And Annie?
J.R.: Do you really think she'd want to be tied to a failure?
Tad: Hang on a minute. You have any idea how much you sound like your father right now?
Krystal: You know, if this wasn't Caleb's party, I would be tempted to make a scene, J.R.
J.R.: This is another reason why I didn't want to come.
Tad: Krystal, it was my idea.
Krystal: Yeah, and a bad one at that.
J.R.: Krystal, we've been over this. I didn't mean to hurt Marissa, and she made it clear ending this marriage was a relief to her. Now we're left trying to pick up the pieces.
Krystal: Yeah. Picking up the pieces, all right.
Kendall: Hey. I saw you and Ryan going at it. What happened? Did Liza find him in her office?
Greenlee: I don't think so. I -- I don't know.
Kendall: Then what were you fighting about?
Greenlee: We weren't fighting. Everything's fine.
Kendall: You know I don't believe that for a minute.
[Pounding on door]
David: I've been expecting you.
Ryan: What did you say to Greenlee?
David: Wow. You really get right to the point, don't you, Lavery?
Ryan: What do you have that you're holding over her?
David: Why don't we try and discuss this like mature adults? What do you say?
Ryan: There has been nothing adult about any of this, Hayward. This is just another one of your sick, twisted games.
David: You know something? I brought us some drinks. Why don't we just try to sit down and relax and talk about this?
[Glass breaks]
Asher: Whoa. That doesn't sound good.
Colby: Um, I'm thinking this isn't a good place to be right now.
Asher: Yeah, good thinking.
Ryan: We're gonna end this right now!
Kendall: I'm waiting.
Greenlee: I already told you nothing's wrong.
Kendall: You're lying.
Iris: Ms. Colby? I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job.
Liza: I so appreciate your vote of confidence.
Iris: Me, too.
Liza: Thank you.
Tad: Excuse me.
Liza: Aren't you gonna congratulate me?
Tad: Why? You win the lottery?
Liza: No. But I am the new district attorney.
Tad: Congratulations. I -- I didn't think that was something you wanted.
Liza: It wasn't, and then it was.
Tad: Why? I always thought you loved private practice.
Liza: Well, I don't like being a gun for hire. And as a D.A., I don't have to take on any clients that I don't particularly support just to cover my overhead.
Tad: Any client in particular?
Liza: It doesn't matter now. I only have one client, the people.
Tad: In the sense he doesn't qualify as human, I guess that leaves Hayward right out. So maybe something new and different is the best thing for you. Like I said, congratulations, Liza. Maybe there's hope for you yet.
Frankie: Hey, slow down. You've been chugging those things ever since Ryan blew back through here.
Madison: He's such a good guy.
Frankie: Is he?
Madison: He's strong, and he's solid, the kind of guy you can count on. Naturally he's gonna want to help when someone's in trouble. Who am I to try to stop him from being who he is, even if the one in trouble used to be his --
Frankie: Fiancée?
Madison: It's funny.
Frankie: What is?
Madison: All this time it's Greenlee I've worried about. I stayed up nights wondering what she would do if she were ever free from David. And now I'm thinking maybe I should've worried about Ryan, too.
Frankie: Why don't you come back with me to the ballroom? We'll find my folks and grab some grub.
Madison: Not now.
Caleb: I was wrong to assume that you'd have the good taste not to show up.
J.R.: Whether you like it or not, you're not the only person in this town who had a connection to Palmer. I did, so did Tad. So if you want to bust into Pine Valley's social scene like a bull in a china shop, it would serve you well to understand the ground rules.
Caleb: The ground rules? I make my own rules, Junior.
J.R.: No. You see, you're just like my old man. Your time has passed. You just don't know it yet.
Opal: Excuse me. I'm gonna go put out a potential fire. Oh, there you are! Sorry, but I think the natives are getting restless for you to give a speech. Why don't we head over here, huh?
Caleb: To be continued.
J.R.: I'm restless.
Tad: Word of advice? It's probably best not to antagonize him.
J.R.: Oh, come on. To waive red in front of a bull? What could be more fun than that?
Krystal: I think it's time you addressed the crowd. Break a leg.
Kendall: Greenlee, listen to me. All we want to do is help you.
Greenlee: I don't need help.
Kendall: Tell me what David did.
Caleb: Uh -- [Taps glass] Could I just have your attention for a minute, please? Um, I have a confession to make. Um -- hmm. I was dreading this evening. I didn't want to come here, I didn't want to dress up, and I didn't want to see any of you. But now that I've been here, I'm beginning to see what my Uncle Pete meant when he talked about this town. Thanks to your generosity, the proceeds from this evening will ensure and guarantee the success, the ongoing success, of the Miranda Center for years to come. That would make my Uncle Pete very happy.
Krystal: Aw.
[Applause]
David: Get your hands off me!
Ryan: What did you do to her? What did you do?!
David: Why don't we talk about what you did, all right? Filling her head with all these lies, all these promises! Making her believe that she doesn't need me anymore, that I'm not good for her!
Ryan: Are you kidding me? Hayward, what have you done? What have you done? You blackmailed her. You brought her back to life for the sole purpose to own her like she's some kind of possession! You are sick, and she deserves somebody so much better than you.
David: Oh, oh. You mean someone like you, right?
Ryan: No, I'm not talking about me. This has never been about me and her. This is just about her getting the hell away from you!
David: You will never take her away from me. Do you understand that? Get this through your thick skull! Greenlee is mine. Greenlee will always be mine!
[David and Ryan exchange punches]
Asher: So those two guys don't like each other much, huh?
Colby: Most people don't like David.
Caleb: His name was Palmer Cortlandt, and he started a small business called Cortlandt Electronics, which helped transform this small, bucolic suburb into an industrial force to be reckoned with. And while Uncle Pete had his critics, his detractors, his competitors, chief among them was Adam Chandler. My Uncle Pete and the Chandlers fought, bickered, and went head to head more often than the Hatfields and the McCoys. And there were times that it seemed on paper that Uncle Pete failed, but he didn't. He always won. Why? Because he was true to himself, he was true to his vision, he was true to his friends, and he was true to the people who worked for him. Now Uncle Pete's gone, but his legacy lives on. I could never create what he did. Hell, I wouldn't want to. And that is to take back Cortlandt Electronics from the people who recently stole it.
Asher: Like he could stand a chance against your brother.
Caleb: But back to the business at hand, the Miranda Center.
Kendall: Greenlee?
Greenlee: The host is speaking.
Kendall: Would you stop trying to avoid me, please?
Greenlee: Ok, fine. Ryan and I had a fight.
Kendall: Why?
Greenlee: Because I told him I'm staying with David.
Kendall: What? Are you kidding me? You can't do that. The man is blackmailing you.
Greenlee: Well, I'm still staying with him -- if I want Ryan to stay alive.
[Applause]
Caleb: Now, I'm not gonna keep you people any longer. You've listened to me long enough. But before I get off my soapbox here, I just want to make -- publicly honor a request that my Uncle Pete made. I'm gonna change my name to Cortlandt.
Opal: Ohh.
Caleb: From now on, I am Caleb Cortlandt.
[Everyone gasps and screams as David stumbles in and collapses]
Liza: Oh, my --
Caleb: Somebody call 911!
