James: I don't know why you're here or what your interest is, but this is a family matter. I'm sure you understand.

Erica: Oh, I understand. I understand completely. I've known men like you. I know what you're capable of. Madison, I know this is scary. I know that. But this is the hardest part. This is the first step. You have to find the courage to walk away from the man who beats you with his fists.

James: I -- I have a mind to call my lawyers.

Erica: Yes, you're gonna need that. Madison, this is your chance. It's time. It's time for you to protect yourself. We are all here. We're all here with you.

Frankie: It's true.

Adam: When exactly did I realize I'd killed my brother?

J.R.: What are you doing?

Annie: Don't.

Adam: I knew about it right then, the second I pulled the trigger. I was horrified, but I knew it.

J.R.: You can't do this.

Adam: I told Annie and everyone I knew that I couldn't remember what had happened. I hid behind that lie. But I'm the one who did it, who hid it. Annie is innocent of all charges.

D.A. Willis: Objection. Your honor, this is outrageous.

[Judge pounds gavel]

Judge Witman: Order! Order in this court!

D.A. Willis: Your honor, this is clear contempt of court!

Judge: Mrs. Chandler, do you have any opinion what happens next?

D.A. Willis: The defense has no background in law, your honor!

Judge Witman: Let her speak! What would you like to do?

Annie: I would like Mr. Chandler removed from court.

[Cell phone rings]

Zach: 3-1-0. Los Angeles. Hello? Hello?

[Doorbell rings]

Opal: I'm sorry. I'm sorry to barge in on you like this, but I have to talk to you.

Zach: It's not a good time.

Opal: It's about Kendall.

Zach: It's not a good time.

Opal: I know you don't like hearing this kind of thing, but I keep hearing a phone that is ringing and ringing. It wakes me up in the night when I'm sleeping. It's always the same scenario. I am dreaming about Kendall, and then a phone rings.

[Cell phone rings]

Opal: Like that! Like that!

[Ringing]

[Cell phone rings]

Opal: Aren't you gonna answer it?

[Ring]

Zach: Kendall? I know it's you. You want to talk to the boys? They're not here. You want to talk to me? I am here. Finally got the guts to talk to me? Go ahead. Nothing? All right. Don't come back here. There's nothing here for you. It's too damn late.

Adam: Let me stay. I'll get on the stand, and I'll tell only the truth and nothing but. The truth is I love you.

D.A. Willis: Oh, Bailiff, escort this man from the court.

Judge Witman: This isn't your job.

D.A. Willis: Well, someone should be doing it.

Judge: Careful, Mr. Willis. Mr. Chandler is your only other witness ready to testify under oath. Are you sure you want him removed?

Annie: What should I do?

D.A. Willis: You can't ask the judge for advice.

Judge Witman: It's abundantly clear you have no idea what you're doing, but I admire your effort. I can't tell you what choice to make, but let me tell you this. One of the first rules of lawyering: Don't get caught by surprise. And if you do, don't show it. You've been caught by surprise, but don't let it distract you from the outcome you wish. So you have a choice. You can call Mr. Chandler to the stand, or you can rest your case.

Adam: Put me on the stand.

D.A. Willis: Since we're winging it, I'd like a recess so the hyphenate and I may approach the bench, if that's all right with you.

Judge Witman: Sounds like a good idea. Recess granted.

Erica: All you have to do is admit the truth. Just say the words, and you won't have to go back.

Madison: He did this. He's done it before. I don't want him to hurt me anymore.

James: A typical bid for attention, with a brand-new audience. Show's over. Madison, let's go.

Natalia: Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're free to leave, but we're taking your daughter to the station.

[Phone rings]

Ryan: Hello?

Kendall: [Muffled] Ryan! Ryan, help me, please! Ryan!

Ryan: Hello? Hello? Who is this? What's going on?

[Line disconnects]

Aidan: You've been busy. It's quite amazing that you were able to make a phone call while you're tied up. Who'd you call, Kendall? First, you call Zach and then you call Ryan. What, Zach didn't want to talk to you?

Kendall: [Muffled] You're damn right I called him. And I'm gonna keep calling him until I get to go home.

Aidan: You know, I can't understand what you're saying. I'll take that off if you promise not to scream.

Aidan: Is that better?

Kendall: I won't be better until I am home with Zach and my boys.

Aidan: It's a shame he hung up on you.

Kendall: Why are you doing this, Aidan? I need to go home. I need Zach.

Aidan: Wow. That's very demanding. You haven't been taking your pills, have you? You know what this means, Kendall? We have to go back to the chloroform.

Kendall: Don't. Aidan, please, please don't do this. Don't do this.

Aidan: Were you looking at the door? You think Zach's gonna burst through here and rescue you? It's not gonna happen.

Kendall: Just let me go home.

Aidan: What makes you think Zach wants you home?

Kendall: He doesn't know the truth.

Aidan: Your mother seemed pretty convinced. I'm sure she passed along what you told her yesterday.

Kendall: You made me say those things. You made me convince her that we're having an affair. But Zach knows my heart. Zach knows that he is the only man that I love. All the e-mails that I sent him from the church and from the boarding house.

Aidan: Yeah. Yeah.

Kendall: What, you read those? You intercepted them?

Aidan: Yeah. It wasn't hard to do.

Kendall: So Zach never got any of them? What, so Zach thinks this is real? Zach thinks that --

Aidan: Zach's not gonna forgive you for sleeping with me.

Kendall: Well, you're wrong. You're wrong. Zach has forgiven me before. It took him a long time, but Zach forgave me.

Aidan: No. Not this time.

J.R.: How could you choose Annie? I thought this family meant something to you.

Adam: I love you all very much.

J.R.: Yeah, but you love Annie more.

Adam: Oh, really? What, does that make me a terrible man, because I've fallen in love with a vibrant, strong woman who might love me in return? When you were diagnosed with cancer, you didn't come running to tell me about it. The only reason you came to me at all: Because you wanted to use your illness as a bargaining chip.

J.R.: The only reason why I didn't tell you is because I didn't want your pity.

Adam: You want my pity now?

J.R.: No. I don't want anything from you.

Adam: Good! That means we'll be the same dysfunctional mess this family has always been.

J.R.: Ok, Dad.

Liza: It was brilliant -- the old double jeopardy gambit. Now you can't be tried twice for the same case. So you hide behind the law, even though you're breaking it. And what's a little perjury if you win the case? Because you can't be charged for that since you never took the stand on your own trial. It was your plan all along, wasn't it?

Adam: What a wicked mind.

Liza: Only Annie knew how torn up you were about choosing her over your family, so she took the stand herself. Sacrificed her case and your plan all so you could be with your family.

Adam: It wasn't until then that I realized how much she really loved me. A woman -- no trickery, no manipulation. Just a woman who gave up her happiness for mine. I've been told that I've got to discover the real Annie so I can hate her. Well, I've discovered the real Annie, and I've never loved anyone nearly as much.

Ryan: Hey, Jesse, can I talk to you for a second, please?

Jesse: I got to get back to the station, but -- ok, what? Sure.

Ryan: I got a call from an L.A. number. It was a muffled voice. I couldn't even tell if it was male or female.

Jesse: A crank call is not really my department.

Ryan: No, no. I understand that, Jesse. But Kendall is in L.A., ok? I think it might be her. So could you please trace the number for me? Something doesn't feel right.

Jesse: All right. I'll see what I can do. I'll run this by Zach, see if something comes up.

Ryan: Ok.

Bailiff: Raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God?

Adam: I do.

Bailiff: You may be seated.

Annie: How am I doing?

Liza: You're a natural.

Erica: Your father can't hurt you anymore. You'll make your statement, we'll get a restraining order, and I'll take you back to the Miranda Center where you can stay as long as you need.

Madison: My father will never forgive me.

Erica: Forgive you? You're not the one who needs forgiveness. You've shown that you have the courage to fight back. Your father can't abuse you anymore.

Randi: If Madison makes a statement, it all comes out: Henry's murder, me and your dad covering it up -- everything.

Frankie: We have to make sure that doesn't happen.

Randi: Beardsley knows everything.

Frankie: He gave us the tapes, and we burned them.

Randi: But he saw them.

Frankie: Pretty soon he'll be known all over town as an abusive son of a bitch. Kind of ruins his credibility.

Jesse: Listen, run a trace on that number? ASAP, please? Madison say anything yet?

Frankie: Only that he hit her.

Erica: Jesse, if you don't mind, I'm gonna take Madison back to the Miranda Center.

Jesse: Better idea. Until the restraining order clears, um -- I want Madison to stay with Angela and me.

Erica: Ok. I mean, certainly there's no safer home than the home of the police chief. All right, then. You keep me posted, though?

Jesse: Absolutely.

Erica: Thank you.

Jesse: What?

Frankie: You don't believe Madison? Now you're taking her in? That's a hell of a turnaround.

Zach: She said nothing. She didn't ask about Spike or Ian. She always fought for those boys, always. Fought for them to be healthy, strong, be alive. Now nothing. Silence.

Opal: If she had asked to see the boys, would you keep her from them? No. No, you wouldn't. You're not that kind of man. You love those boys so much that you want what's best for them. And you know that that means having their mama in their lives.

Zach: Well, what if the mama doesn't want the boys in her life?

Opal: I don't believe that. I think Kendall waited to call, hoping that maybe some of the pain and hurt would be done.

Zach: Should've fought for those kids.

Opal: Yeah, you're right. But we don't have all the facts. All we know for sure is that right now you are hurting so bad, you'd like to tear the whole world apart with your bare hands. You know, it's true what they say -- time does heal.

Kendall: Ok, there is one big, fat problem with this great plan of yours. I'm in love with Zach. I will never, ever love you. This is insane. This is crazy.

Aidan: Hey, stop wiggling.

Kendall: No, don't touch me.

Aidan: Maybe it's time for you to take another nap.

Kendall: No, don't -- leave me alone. I said, don't touch me.

Aidan: You know, someday Kendall, you might feel differently.

[Knock on door]

[Knock on door]

Maid: Housekeeping.

Aidan: I'm fine. In fact, I told the front desk that I don't want to be disturbed -- now or later.

Maid: Sorry, sir.

Kendall: How long are you -- how long are you gonna keep doing this? Dragging me around the country and drugging me. Ok, you know what? Go ahead. Go ahead. Do it. Just go ahead and do it. Drug me one more time. What the hell do I care? Because you know what? I will never, never stop dreaming of Zach. I will only dream of Zach.

Jesse: I told you that if there's proof that Madison is in trouble, I would help.

Frankie: So now you're a believer?

Jesse: Well, you and Erica helped me get there.

Randi: Look, I'm really sorry that I gave Madison's dad that key. I honestly believed that he was being truthful that she was delusional.

Frankie: Well, you thought you were helping her.

Randi: Or wanted gone, out of our lives. Because of that, because of me, she could've been hurt even worse.

Frankie: But she wasn't. And now she'll be protected, safe.

Jesse: Let's keep our family safe, too. All right?

Annie: What do you remember about the night your brother was killed?

Adam: Every single detail. I stood outside that window, hating the world and myself, my brain addled with drugs and despair. I just wanted to end it, so I pulled the trigger.

Annie: And you shot your brother by mistake?

Adam: Yes, yes.

Annie: What happened next?

Adam: I figured I should get out of there. So I ran, my head full of drugs and fear. I was a mess. That's when you found me.

Annie: And what did I do?

Adam: Well, you told me to calm down. You told me that everything was going to be all right. You took me to the attic. Ask me. Go ahead.

Annie: Did you know in that moment you had shot your brother?

Adam: Yes, yes. And I figured I needed a plan. And that's when you appeared, and I figured everything was falling into place. So I just denied knowing anything about it, and you calmed me down and helped me. And I guess it worked out, didn't it?

D.A. Willis: Objection. Who's questioning whom?

Annie: So you used me?

Adam: Oh, yes. Most people thought that you were using me: This poor, well, sort of hopeless grandfather-type madly in love with a young, beautiful temptress.

Annie: Do you ever think about telling anybody that you had killed your brother?

Adam: Oh, yes, yes. I came close to telling you many times because of Emma, and Kendall going off to prison. When all this happened, I had fallen in love with you. And I was much too selfish to sacrifice my own happiness for the greater good.

Annie: So you don't think I am guilty of these charges against me?

Adam: Of course not. How could you be? How could you know I lied about the memory loss? All you did was love me. And from that night to this moment you have loved me, and I love you for it.

Judge Witman: Mrs. Chandler?

Annie: Sorry. Um, no further questions. You may step down.

D.A. Willis: Oh, no, you can't. Need I remind you that you're under oath, sir?

Adam: Yes, indeed, I am.

D.A. Willis: Then tell me this. Are you telling the truth, Mr. Chandler? And think carefully before you answer. Are you telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but, so help you God?

Adam: Annie has done nothing wrong. There is no conspiracy. She is not an accessory. So I acted on my own.

D.A. Willis: Do you know what double jeopardy is?

Adam: Yes, yes. You can't try a man twice for the same crime.

D.A. Willis: That's correct. And you were recently acquitted in the murder of your brother by reason of diminished capacity. Is that true?

Adam: You did a very good job on that.

D.A. Willis: Now, you claimed you didn't remember anything about the murder: A sign of that diminished capacity. Now you're saying you remembered everything from that night, from pulling the trigger to your plan to elude punishment.

Annie: Can I object to that?

Judge: You can. But I'm not going to allow it.

D.A. Willis: Mr. Chandler, were you lying then or are you lying now?

Adam: I did the right thing.

D.A. Willis: To save your wife from going to prison. And since you've been so forthcoming about that night and given all this new information, it's possible that my office can explore reopening the case against you.

Annie: Objection! He's threatening my witness.

Judge: Counselor, let's avoid threats and move along.

D.A. Willis: No more questions, your honor.

Judge: Defense, it's your move.

Annie: Uh, to do what?

Judge Witman: Ask for a summary dismissal.

Annie: That's a good thing, right?

Judge Witman: Very.

Annie: Your honor, I would like a summary dismissal.

Judge: Granted.

D.A. Willis: Your honor --

Judge Witman: All charges against the defendant are dismissed. You are free to go.

Ryan: You're kidding.

J.R.: I thought a son in remission trumped hot wife. I mean, using this disease to get my dad to choose -- how Chandler is that?

Marissa: That's not what you were doing.

J.R.: Yes, it was. What was I thinking?

Marissa: That you love your dad, and that you wanted us all to be a family under the same roof.

J.R.: The only thing Adam wants under his roof is Annie and her bikini collection.

Marissa: Adam knows that his choice was selfish and wrong. That's why he turned this on you. You know, he tried to make you out to be the bad guy when all you did was share that you had cancer. Thank God that's behind us.

J.R.: Yeah. Thank God.

Marissa: I'm sorry. This is my fault. I was the one who pushed you into this.

J.R.: No, you didn't. I wanted it as much as you did.

Erica: Is it over?

Ryan: A summary dismissal. Annie is free.

Erica: Oh, my God. How is that even possible?

Ryan: Because Adam did what he does best. He stood up, and he lied through his teeth.

Erica: Ok, listen to me. There is no way that she's ever gonna get custody of your daughter.

Ryan: I think I might've heard from yours.

Erica: What -- what do you mean?

Ryan: Well, I got a call from an L.A. number, a cell phone.

Erica: Kendall? Did she change her mind? Does she want to come home?

Ryan: She didn't really say much of anything. It was -- it was kind of muffled, and then a disconnect.

Erica: Well, are you sure that it was her?

Ryan: I'm -- I'm pretty sure that it was her. But, I mean, it didn't seem right, so I gave the number to Jesse to have him trace it.

Erica: You know something? When I saw Kendall, it didn't seem right either. I have never seen her like that. Opal has had all these bad vibes about everything. I am so worried.

Ryan: Well, maybe Jesse can get some answers.

Erica: Have you told Zach about the call?

Ryan: In the rage that he's in? You really think he would listen?

Erica: Maybe it's time that he does.

Jesse: I got some news on Kendall. Now, I know you don't want to hear it, but I'm gonna tell you anyway. Ryan got a call from L.A.

Opal: So did Zach!

Jesse: Really? Well, was this the number? Did she say anything?

Zach: No.

Opal: Did she say anything to Ryan? Did she talk to him?

Jesse: Ryan said the voice was muffled. So I traced the call back to a cell phone belonging to Chris Nielson. No address. I'm gonna give a call to the LAPD.

Zach: Why would you do that, Jesse? Why would you have the police chase somebody that doesn't want to be found?

Opal: Now, Zach, she did call home.

Zach: Yeah, maybe she was homesick for a second. Leave it alone, both you guys.

Annie: Aren't you going to congratulate me?

Adam: Not even an empty threat?

Ryan: You both make me sick.

Adam: Well, if you'll excuse us, we have some celebrating to do.

Annie: Yes. Oh, give Emma a kiss for me. Tell her I'll be seeing her real soon.

Jesse: Sorry about the delay. I had some business to tend to.

Natalia: I'll be outside if you need anything.

Jesse: All right.

Madison: Why are you doing this?

Jesse: It's my job. You're in trouble.

Madison: If you go after my father, he could implicate you and Randi in covering up Henry's murder.

Jesse: Well, right now let's deal with this: You. So this abuse -- it's been going on for years?

Madison: It's always been his way or the back of his hand. I married Henry to escape. Eventually I told him about the abuse. I thought he would protect me, but he didn't care. He actually knew it was going on. But Daddy's money was going to buy him the governor's mansion, and he wasn't about to cut off his money supply.

Jesse: He abuse you, too?

Madison: Physically? He hardly touched me, hardly looked at me. One day he wanted a divorce. He was going to send me back to my father. I -- I couldn't let that happen. I -- I couldn't go back, not to that.

Jesse: You felt trapped?

Madison: When I saw Henry on the hotel floor, all I could see was the man who was sending me back to the hell of my father. And I just wanted it to end, wanted to make it go away. So I hit him and I left him to die. I wasn't even asking for love. I just wanted to feel safe. But he never helped me. He never even tried.

J.R.: Don't tell me.

Colby: Summary dismissal. Charges dropped. Annie is free.

J.R.: If you want to stay with us while you figure out what you're going to do, you can. That's fine.

Colby: Oh, no. I'm staying at Dad's. No way am I gonna let Annie push me out.

Marissa: If you're doing that to protect your dad, I'm not sure that he wants to be protected.

Colby: I'm not doing this for Dad. I'm doing this for us. I am gonna put this family back together again.

Annie: It is finally really over! I am free. Completely 100% freed. Nothing to worry about, nothing hanging over my head. I can just relax and enjoy my fabulous life with my fabulous husband.

Adam: Ooh. Heh heh.

Annie: There was really a time when I was sitting in that hospital bed, and I thought maybe my life as Mrs. Adam Chandler was over. But here I am. It really is a season of miracles, and I am going to make sure this is the best Christmas ever. And you are the best Christmas present ever.

[Annie gasps]

Annie: Presents?

Adam: Ah, presents.

Annie: Yeah! Ooh.

Scott: You put your hand on that Bible and you swore to tell the truth, and you lied.

Adam: Annie lied to save me. I simply returned the favor.

Erica: Zach. I thought you should know. Ryan got a call from Kendall. I mean, at least he thinks it was Kendall.

Zach: I know. Jesse came over. I got some calls, too.

Erica: You did? Well, what happened? What did she say?

Zach: Nothing.

Erica: Look, when Ryan got the calls -- I mean, all he thought he heard was a muffled voice. What if -- what if Kendall was reaching out? I mean, surely you could meet her halfway?

Zach: There is no halfway for me and Kendall.

Erica: Zach, I know that somewhere inside you there are feelings for Kendall. I know that. You have children together. You made promises. You made vows. I know you. That doesn't go away just because you're hurt and you're angry.

Zach: It went away when she chose Aidan. And I made that very clear when she called.

Erica: So you did speak to her? And you told her it was over? Zach! Zach, you are running on -- on sheer emotion. You have put up a wall. You've got to get past that. You're overwhelmed at the moment, but please put your emotions aside and just think. Think clearly. When you spoke to Kendall, do you really think that those were just simple phone calls? Or do you think that she was crying out for help?

Frankie: How'd it go?

Jesse: Well, it's all connected. Beardsley hit Madison. Madison hit North. It seems our man North -- he knew about the abuse all along, but he refused to help. All he wanted was a divorce. And all Madison could see was life with Daddy all over again. She kills her husband.

Randi: Oh, my God. I'm just as bad as her husband. I gave her up to her father.

Frankie: Baby, you didn't know.

Jesse: None of us knew.

Frankie: So what happens now?

Jesse: We put out a warrant for James Beardsley's arrest.

Liza: Adam's a master at deception.

Ryan: One of the best.

Liza: You know, if they ever made a story about his life, they should call it "Deception: A love Story." How did I ever love that man?

Ryan: I loved Annie. And now she's free, and Adam's free, and there's nothing we can do. There's nothing: No recourse, no appeal? Nothing?

Liza: No. They're clear.

Ryan: Please tell me their freedom is not gonna cost me my daughter.

Liza: Oh, Ryan, I wish I could tell you that. But you got a battle ahead of you.

Annie: Whoo!

[Annie laughs]

Adam: Oh, so be careful. My wife is a dangerous woman.

Annie: Oh, those lights look amazing! Here.

Adam: Yeah. Oh, yes. Uh, Scott?

Scott: No. None for me, thank you.

Adam: Really?

Annie: But we're celebrating.

Scott: I think I'll turn in for the night. Good night.

Adam: Good night.

Annie: Good night. He's just cranky.

Adam: He doesn't approve of our methods.

Annie: But our methods work so well.

Adam: To my stunning, stunning wife, the woman who beat the D.A. at his own game. Mrs. Adam Chandler, the most powerful woman in town!

Annie: Mrs. Adam Chandler. I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you gave me a second chance.

Adam: Oh, you know what I think?

Annie: I'd love to hear.

Adam: I think we should get married again.

[Adam laughs]

Zach: I'm not doing this.

Erica: Zach, who knows Kendall better than you do? Who loves her more than you do?

Zach: Apparently Aidan is in the running.

Erica: Oh, stop it. Look, we both know this is horrible. We've both been hurt by Kendall's choice. But certainly you must've had at least one moment of doubt that this is really what Kendall wants.

Zach: And, what, find some hope? I'm not gonna set myself up for that.

Erica: So you have done some thinking about this? Then please, Zach, think some more. I tell you, when I saw Aidan and Kendall in L.A., I wanted to see Kendall. Aidan didn't want me to. When I finally did, Kendall was very tense. She was not herself. And now you say she called, and she wouldn't or couldn't speak? I mean, you saw Kendall with Aidan.

Zach: Twice. Once in the church --

Erica: And the other time?

Zach: In the boarding house. I saw too much.

Erica: Zach, look, I know that it hurts. But please, please keep on thinking. What about before they left for L.A.? Did Kendall say anything to you?

Kendall: And I promise I will never turn my back on you or our family ever again. Never. No lies. Just -- just love. I will only love you and only you.

Zach: And I promise I will try -- try to break up these demons that won't let me sleep at night. And I will try to put out the fires that give them life. We made promises to each other. I promised I wouldn't doubt her anymore, and she promised she wouldn't turn her back on her family.

Erica: Oh, my God. Do you really think that Kendall would break that vow? Are you breaking yours?

[Shower runs]

[Cell phone rings]

Kendall: Help me.

[Shower stops]

[Ring]

Kendall: Somebody help me.

Aidan: Hello?

Kendall: Help me.

Zach: Hello, Aidan. It's Zach.

Aidan: What do you want?

Zach: My wife. You hurt her, and I'll kill you.
