[Ryan walks into David's office to leave him a note and looks at his computer screen where he sees Greenlee's hospital record of 7/16/07]
David: What are you doing? That's confidential.
Ryan: You want to tell me why you're looking at Greenlee's medical records?
David: Greenlee was my patient, Ryan. I have every right --
Ryan: She's been dead for months, David.
David: She wasn't just my patient. As you well know, when Leo died, Greenlee and I got close, very close.
Ryan: That's great and everything, but you still haven't answered the question: Why are you looking at Greenlee's medical records now?
[While she's taking a bath, Amanda tearfully recalls having sex with David in his car. Her cell phone beeps, and she reads a text message from Jake: "I'm on my way over." Then she continues to scrub herself, crying.]
Erica: Adam. What are you doing skulking around here?
Adam: I'm not skulking. I have a business meeting. So if you'll excuse me -- bellman: Mr. Chandler, your room will be ready soon.
Adam: Ah.
Erica: Your room? Adam, have you and Annie broken up?
Annie: You're so tense. You've been tense since we got home. You know what, let me give you a shoulder rub. Turn around.
Scott: No, that's ok.
Annie: Oh, stop it. It's the least I can do. Turn around.
Scott: Ahh --
Annie: How's that?
[Scott turns around and kisses Annie passionately, while Adam's secret camera is recording]
Scott: We can't do this anymore.
Annie: Well, apparently we can't stop doing this. And the question is, why? It's like we're fighting some riptide. I mean, we keep getting sucked under the current.
Scott: No. No. This is my fault. You --
Annie: No, it's not. It's not.
Scott: I've never been like this before, Annie. I thought I had stopped this. I thought -- my whole life has been about --
Annie: Safe choices? Yeah, I used to be like that, too.
Scott: I thought we had stopped this. I thought this was over.
Annie: Ok, it was spontaneous. It wasn't a choice. But it's over now. Nothing happened, and nothing ever will happen.
Scott: How can we do this to Uncle Adam? How can you? How can I do this to a man who has taken me in like a son?
David: Greenlee asked me as her doctor to inseminate her with your sperm.
Ryan: Without telling me. Yes, I remember. That's ancient history.
David: Yeah, well, it changed your life, though, didn't it? You were so sure you didn't want kids, so you ran off to Canada. Oh, and here's the brilliant part of the plan -- you let everyone think you were dead.
Ryan: I thought I would make a horrible father, yes.
David: Ha ha. That's pretty ironic, don't you think? After all that, here you are, the proud protective dad of two kids.
Ryan: Thank you very much for the trip down memory lane, David, but you still haven't told me what is going on here.
David: Maybe you haven't heard yet. Amanda's trying to get pregnant again, artificial insemination.
Ryan: So what?
David: The specialist suggested that it may take a while, which is exactly what I had to tell Greenlee. I'm just looking for similarities, anything I can find that might help with Amanda's pregnancy.
Ryan: And why don't I believe you?
David: Oh, you know, I don't give a damn, Ryan. Believe whatever you want, but if you would have taken the time to open the last screen, you would have seen that I pulled a dozen files, ok? All women with problem pregnancies. Amanda's trying to get pregnant as quickly as possible. I was simply trying to help.
Ryan: I suppose even you are capable of that every once in a while.
David: Oh, thank you very much. Well, now it's your turn, Ryan. Why don't you tell me what the hell you're doing snooping around my office?
[Knock on door]
Jake: Hey, beautiful.
Amanda: Uh, Jake, now -- now is really not a good time.
Jake: I just came to say, you know, hi and how you doing.
Amanda: I'm not gonna know if I'm pregnant for a couple of weeks, so --
Jake: Well, I didn't ask you that.
Amanda: So you don't want to know?
Jake: Well, I didn't say that either, did I?
Amanda: Look, I'll just make it easy. Do I feel pregnant? No. Would I like some time alone? Yes. I'm sorry. I don't mean to snap.
Jake: It's ok. I understand.
Amanda: I'm -- I'm just trying to put this whole thing behind me, ok?
Jake: Right. Well, I'm sure it's very hard.
Amanda: Yeah, especially when everyone keeps asking me all these questions and looking at me like I'm hiding this big secret that only I can know or something.
Jake: All right, well, you know that I haven't said two words since the insemination, right? So if you're pissed, you're probably pissed at David, and I'm not David, so I'd appreciate it if you -- come here.
Amanda: No. Jake, please -- please don't touch me.
Jake: All right, you know, you are acting like I don't know what. This was -- it was a procedure, and to you it's -- I mean it's like --
Amanda: Like -- like I was raped?
Ryan: I am here for one reason: Annie.
David: Oh, what a shocker.
Ryan: I would like to find out who the father is of this baby that she's carrying.
David: Well, I would think the answer to that is obvious. Who else but Adam -- oh, wait a minute. Don't tell me you --
Ryan: No, not me. Not a chance, David.
David: Ok, then why are you so interested?
Ryan: That is not important, ok? It's not your concern right now.
David: No, it is my concern when you're breaking into my files. All right, let's see. It must have something to do with the murder. You figure that Annie is using her pregnancy to control Adam, so if you can prove to Adam that the baby's not his --
Ryan: I would like some information about the pregnancy. For instance, the date of conception.
David: Well, I can calculate that easily enough.
Ryan: Well, if it turns out it was during a time that Adam was in the hospital or out of town, obviously he wouldn't be there to conceive the baby. That information would be very valuable for me.
David: Hmm. You don't have anything I want, Ryan.
Ryan: And that may not always be the case, David.
David: The last time I did you and Zach a little favor, supplying that drug for you to give to Adam, it cost me my chief of staff job.
Ryan: And I will owe you, too.
David: No, I don't think so. I think I'm gonna have to go with patient confidentiality this time around. Sorry, Ryan. You're on your own with this little witch hunt. Now get the hell out of my office.
Erica: Look, Adam, something serious must have happened between you and Annie. You'd be a fool to try to deny it.
Adam: All right, you caught me dead to rights: I left the toilet seat up.
Erica: Oh. That's just a little bit too much information. But for you to leave your mansion, it must have been serious.
Adam: Ryan already told me, showed me the DVD, where Annie was kissing Scott. That's old news.
Erica: I'm sorry, Adam.
Adam: You're sorry. You have been trying to fracture this relationship for weeks now, hoping I'd betray some secret about the murder.
Erica: Well, I didn't imagine Stuart's murder, Adam.
Adam: Well, then maybe you can't imagine that Kendall actually did it.
Erica: She didn't do it. And you know what's very sad, Adam? At first you were lying to yourself, but now you're standing here, you're lying to me, and you're trying to lie to the whole world.
Adam: Are we through here?
Erica: No, we're not. You saw the DVD. You saw the DVD of Scott and Annie lip-locking. I'm sure that you have questions. But I know very well if you had confronted Annie, she would have just denied it, and I know you very well, Adam Chandler. The Adam Chandler I know would never have accepted a simple denial.
Adam: Well, maybe you don't know me as well as you think.
Erica: Yes, I do. And the -- the actual Adam Chandler move would be not to confront Annie. So no, you must have some other plan.
Adam: Do tell.
Erica: Well, where would Adam Chandler's mind go? Huh. Of course. This is some new spin on the trick you pulled on me when we were married. You're putting them to some sort of a test, aren't you?
Adam: Nonsense.
Erica: Yes, you want to see if they fall into each other's arms. You want to see if this is Scott's baby.
Scott: There's something wrong with me.
Annie: Stop it. No.
Scott: No.
Annie: No.
Scott: Yeah. It's this Chandler thing, and it's been with me ever since I was a kid, and it's starting to come out.
Annie: What do you mean it's a Chandler thing?
Scott: It's a self-destruct button -- where you cannot resist temptation. Adam has it, and J.R. has it, and even though I'm adopted, I got it, too.
Annie: You're nothing like them.
Scott: Oh? No, Annie, the Chandler trait has been lying dormant in me for years, and ever since I came back, it has started to wake up. Look at me. I thought I was so different from Adam, from J.R. and I'm not. My father raised me to be better, to be stronger, but now that he's gone --
Annie: You can still find the Stuart in you.
Scott: No. No, I'm the other Chandlers to the core now.
Annie: You want to sleep with me, don't you?
Scott: You haven't heard a word I have said, have you?
Annie: I have heard every word you've said, but I am a bottom-line person, and I can read between all your lines, so my question for you is this: Are you going to be man enough to say what you really want?
Scott: Yes, Annie. I want to sleep with you. Is that clear enough for you? I want you.
Amanda: I've felt violated ever since David said that he wanted another child.
Jake: Well, I know what you mean. I want to take a shower every time I have a conversation with the guy.
Amanda: It's like my body is this thing that he can use and fill with a baby at his whim.
Jake: I'm sorry. I just was gonna say I hope you're not mad at me 'cause I didn't stop you from doing it.
Amanda: No. I'm not mad at you. I could never blame you. You are my one shot at happiness. You and Trevor both.
Jake: Baby, I dream about that day every single day of my life.
Amanda: That day is the only reason I'm putting up with all of this. It's just -- it -- it used to be abstract, you know, just like words on a piece of paper. And now it's not abstract anymore. It's real. It could physically be inside of me.
Jake: What can I do?
Amanda: Just let me keep loving you. You -- you are the only good thing in all of this. You and Trevor are -- are the light at the end of the tunnel.
Jake: Then why -- why didn't you let me hold you? I'm just -- I just -- you know, all I want to do is comfort you. That's why I'm here.
Amanda: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Jake: Is -- is there something that you're not telling me?
David: Is something wrong?
Adam: You may think you know me, but you don't know Scott, and he's not capable of doing what you're suggesting.
Erica: Adam, the DVD is very persuasive.
Adam: Ryan is already convinced that Annie's the, uh, devil incarnate, but showing me that DVD was an act of desperation.
Erica: Yes, Adam, I am desperate. You have forced my daughter Kendall away from me.
Adam: Erica, I'm -- I'm sorry that Kendall got hurt in all this. I really am sorry. Please believe that.
Erica: Look, I'm sorry if I sounded as if I was trying to talk you out of your plan to test the love birds. Far from it. Actually, I think a few days of your having a vacation here will open your eyes. Because Annie can't help herself. It's her nature.
Bellman: Your keys, sir. Your room is ready.
Adam: Oh, yes, thank you.
David: What the hell did you do to her?
Jake: I didn't do anything to her, Dave. It's what you did.
David: All right, wait a minute. Whatever happened between us was mutually agreed upon, ok?
Amanda: Stop. You guys stop fighting.
Jake: Just because she is having artificial insemination in a lab, it doesn't mean it doesn't affect a person. It's not like going to get Chinese takeout food.
David: No, no, of course not. And of course, she would be impacted. That's why I've been very understanding.
Jake: He's been very understanding. That's funny.
David: All right, look, I haven't violated any of the terms of this agreement, all right? Every step of the way, we've made decisions together, and at any point, she could have said no. Isn't that right, Amanda?
Amanda: Yes.
David: But maybe Jake is right. You know, maybe I have been too obsessed with winning.
Jake: Really? You think?
David: You're a human being, Amanda, a beautiful one. Not just some receptacle to carry my child. I'm starting to realize that maybe all these rules I lay down, maybe it was just going too far -- that I was taking advantage of your decision to give me another child.
Jake: You know, if BS was currency, you would be a millionaire.
David: All right, look, you have every reason to mistrust me, but even if you think this is all just self-interest on my part, Amanda still needs to relax during this delicate time. We all want this pregnancy to take hold, right? Ok, well, then for that to happen, Amanda, she needs to be happy, to relax, and obviously she can't do that here.
Jake: What -- what is that? What are you saying?
David: I'm willing to suspend the rules for the time being. I think Amanda should go with you, Jake, to your house, spend some time. At least until we know if she's pregnant or not. And if we have to do it again, well, at least she will have had some time to relax during this period. That makes sense, right?
Jake: That's fine. That's fine. Come on, we'll take Trevor, and we'll send for your bags, ok? Come on.
Amanda: I can't go with you.
Jake: Ok, I don't understand. I thought that living together was what we have been after since the beginning.
Amanda: It is, and that's why I can't go with you.
Jake: Why? Because it's our dream come true? I don't --
Amanda: Until we find out that I'm not pregnant, and I have to do it all over again? And then I have to move back here again, right?
David: I'm afraid so. And we all know the chance of success the first time around.
Amanda: I don't want to do that to Trevor either. It's confusing. I mean, one crib, then another crib, strange faces. N-not you. It's not what I meant.
Jake: This is, you know, what you want, so --
Amanda: It's what I want.
Jake: Huh. Ok. I'll -- I'll stand by you. Just funny that I have to do that by leaving. I know where the door is.
Amanda: Huh. You bastard!
Adam: Huh.
[Adam walks into the living room while Annie and Scott talk out on the terrace]
Annie: Doesn't that feel better? To say your desires out loud?
Scott: Loud or soft, as long as you don't act on them, it's still just a fantasy.
Annie: Then you're saying that's as far as it will go between us?
Scott: Yes. Yeah. A few stolen kisses, we admitted to some feelings, and that's it.
Annie: Absolutely. In my head, I -- I know that you're right.
Scott: We have too much at stake, Annie. You would lose Adam. I would lose my self-respect. I would dishonor my father's memory. I --
Adam: Annie!
Annie: It's Adam.
Adam: Ah, I thought --
Annie: Adam, what happened to your business trip?
Adam: Plans change.
Annie: Can I get you something?
Adam: No, no. I have what I need. You in your condition should not be walking around out there in the cold weather. Ha ha! I thought you were gonna keep an eye on her?
Scott: Yeah, the, uh, the fireplace, it was gushing smoke. It was a stuck flue, I think, and we had to air out the room, so we went outside to grab some fresh air, clear our lungs.
Adam: Well, you're frozen through and through. Are you trembling?
Annie: No.
Scott: I think I'll go out for a while. Good night.
Adam: Uh-huh. What's eating him?
[Door closes]
Annie: I have no idea.
Erica: I just really hope that Scott and Annie trip right into his trap.
Ryan: Hmm.
Erica: 'Cause it's just a theory at the moment, you know, that this baby is Scott's and not Adam's.
Ryan: Yes, it is, and Jake says we have to wait ten weeks until we can check paternity.
Erica: I am so sick of waiting. And you know something? We may not even need that test, because Adam is just about to throw Annie out. If that baby is not Adam's, that clears the way for Adam to confess to the murder. Why aren't you excited?
Ryan: Well, I -- I mean, I'm encouraged. I'm encouraged. You're right. And things are, you know, looking good, looking like we're heading down the right path. It's just, uh --
Erica: What? What is it?
Ryan: Well, uh, I went to -- I went to David Hayward's, and, uh, to try and figure out Annie's due date, and -- well, Greenlee's file was up on his computer.
Erica: Her medical file?
Ryan: Yes. And I guess to be honest, it's just, uh, it's brought up a lot of stuff, you know, a lot of thoughts, and I've been thinking, remembering everything.
Erica: Oh.
Adam: Ah, leche con amor.
Annie: Aw, you're so sweet. Thank you. Mmm.
Adam: It's true. You have that pregnant glow.
Annie: Aha.
Adam: Yeah.
Annie: You've been so good to me through all the ups and downs. I know I've kind of put you through hell lately, and there were many times you could have kicked me to the curb in the past few weeks or months, but you didn't. You believed in me more than anybody else.
Adam: Yeah.
Annie: You really have given me so much, and now you've given me a baby.
Adam: Mmm.
Annie: And I just want you to know I would never do anything to jeopardize this baby or our marriage, Adam. I love you so much.
Adam: Aw.
Annie: What is -- what is that doing on?
Adam: It's -- it's always on.
Annie: No. It hasn't been on for months. My God, you turned it on before you left, didn't you? You leaving -- it was all a setup. You've been watching me, spying.
Adam: I'm watching both of you.
Annie: But why now? Why are you suddenly so suspicious?
Adam: I saw a DVD recorded on a recorder just like this. In it, you kissed Scott and J.R.
Annie: That was all months ago, and J.R. was being an idiot, trying to prove that I was using you for your money.
Adam: Oh, and Scott?
Annie: A childish impulsive moment when I hardly knew you.
Adam: Yes, well, uh, that's what I wanted to believe and that's what I tried to tell -- Ryan.
Annie: Ah, Ryan. I should have guessed. So what, you were defending me, and he planted the seed, and you just couldn't let it go?
Adam: Exactly. So I planned this little out-of-town trip and, um, with a couple of days off, so you could be alone. And then I realized I was wrong. I was being mistrustful and -- small and deceitful.
Annie: So you came back?
Adam: Oh, yes, yes. And what did I find? Scott is in a sweat although it's 40 degrees outside, and you are acting as if you'd been caught with your pants down.
Annie: Really, Adam.
Adam: Scott left with his tail between his legs, and, uh --
Adam: I really don't want to have to play this. Tell me that nothing happened here tonight.
Annie: Nothing happened. So you can watch that DVD or don't. I don't care. But there is nothing on that that is going to make you doubt my love for you.
[Adam throws the CD into the blazing fireplace]
Ryan: I was blindsided, I guess. Not that I'd completely put Greenlee out of my mind or anything like that. It's just that I, uh, I suppose I thought that the toughest part was over. The memories had begun to fade.
Erica: I can understand how upsetting that could be for you, and I'm sure you'd like to be alone now.
Ryan: Erica, let me just be clear. I definitely didn't want to hurt you. I just always want to be honest with you.
Erica: And I appreciate that.
Ryan: Ok.
Erica: I know that memories can stay inside us like spirits, and then just something small can trigger them back to life, and that something could have happened a long time ago, and then all of a sudden, there it is, it's right in front of you.
Ryan: Yeah. I mean, Greenlee will never be out of my heart, I guess.
Erica: Of course not. I mean, you were gonna be married the night that she died.
Ryan: And I've been trying to move on. With you.
Erica: Well, I believe I've moved on myself. I think that I've changed. I hope for the better. Yes, for the better. And I, uh, actually, I partly have to thank you for that.
Ryan: We are both responsible for our own growth, wherever that takes us.
Erica: Absolutely. Absolutely. And when you're ready, maybe I can help you.
Ryan: Help me put the past behind me?
Erica: Yes, but not ignore it, and not let it get in the way of the present either.
Ryan: Speaking of the present, I think I should head home and check on Spike and Emma.
Erica: Yes.
Ryan: It's been a waiting game with Adam. Right now, anyway.
Erica: Absolutely, yes. And if I hear anything, I'll call you.
Ryan: I'll do the same.
[Ryan kisses Erica and leaves the Yacht Club]
David: What the hell was that? Hormones?
Amanda: Oh, you'd love to lay it all on that, wouldn't you, David?
David: Ok, fine, then please enlighten me. I just made an extremely magnanimous gesture to you knowing how upset you were.
Amanda: You knew I wouldn't go, that I can't live with Jake with this repulsive secret hanging over us.
David: Repulsive? What was repulsive?
Amanda: Sex in a car with you!
David: Ok, wait a minute. We discussed it beforehand, Amanda. Nobody forced you to make love to me.
Amanda: We did not make love, David. We had sex. Sex isn't even a repulsive enough word to describe how disgusting it felt.
David: You know, I don't know who you're trying to convince right now. Jake doesn't have to know about any of this, and if you don't tell him, he never will.
Amanda: I don't have to tell him. He can see it. How -- how dirty I feel.
David: I don't want you to feel that way, Amanda. That's the last thing that I want.
Amanda: First you took my son from me, then you pushed my husband out of my life, and now you've taken my self-respect.
David: I respect you deeply for what you've done.
Amanda: You know, it's not even that I can't live with Jake. I don't -- I don't know how I'm gonna live with myself.
Scott: Ahh --
Erica: Tonic, please. Hi. I understand that Adam's away on a business trip. Do you know when he'll be back?
Scott: Why don't you ask me what you really want to know?
Erica: What would that be?
Scott: You and Ryan and Zach and the rest of the bloodhound gang want to know if there's something going on between Annie and me. Right? Huh. You want to know whether or not I am the father of Annie's baby. That's what you really wanted to ask, isn't it?
Erica: Well, since you're being so forthright, yes, I'm curious.
Scott: As if Adam couldn't possibly be the father, and Annie couldn't remotely be in love with Adam.
Erica: Huh. It's a stretch.
Scott: Yeah, it's Adam's baby.
Erica: How can you be so sure?
Scott: Because I didn't sleep with her, Erica. Sure as hell wanted to. I had a hard time keeping my hands off of her, too, but I resisted. Thin comfort as it is.
Erica: You never had sex with her?
Scott: No. Thank you. That baby is half Adam, half Annie. That's got nothing to do with me.
Annie: Thank you for trusting me and believing in me. I'm so lucky to have you.
Adam: Ah.
Annie: I am exhausted after all this drama. Why don't we go up to bed?
Adam: Oh, that's a wonderful idea, but I'll be up in just a few minutes. I have some business mail to check on.
Annie: Ok.
[Adam pulls another CD out of its hiding place in a book]
[Ryan walks out onto his balcony, then looks up at the moon]
[A hospital monitor beeps next to a patient]
[Phone rings]
Gayle: Hello?
David: Hello, Gayle. How are you doing? More important, how is our patient doing?
Jake: Dr. Hines, Dr. Hines! Hi. I'm sorry. I was actually wanting to talk to you. It's about my wife and whatever happened at the clinic.
Hines: What happened about what?
Jake: Ahh. Well, I don't know. She just seems off. I don't know if there was a disagreement with Hayward or if there was a fight, or I don't know why she's upset. Maybe she wanted to not do it, and he talked her into it.
Hines: Wait. Slow down. I can't answer any of those questions.
Jake: Well, we're both doctors, ok. This is my wife we're talking about.
Hines: It's not that. It's that I don't know any of the answers.
Jake: Why don't you know any of the answers?
Hines: I wasn't there.
Scott: Adam and Annie are planning a life around that baby, so you can forget about splitting them up, and you can forget about getting him to confess. That's just not gonna happen.
Erica: What makes you so sure?
Scott: Because you are up against something, Erica, that you have never had to deal with in this whole mess: Honesty. No lies, no deceits, no cover-ups. Just the plain and simple truth. The greatest weapon of them all.
[Adam watches the CD recorded earlier]
Annie: You're so tense. You've been tense since we got home. You know what, let me give you a shoulder rub. Turn around.
Scott: No, that's ok.
Annie: Oh, stop it. It's the least I can do. Turn around.
Scott: Ahh --
Annie: How's that?
[Adam becomes emotional as he watches Annie and Scott kissing passionately on the sofa]
Scott: We can't do this anymore.
Annie: Well, apparently we can't stop doing this.
