David: I'd love for our son to have a little brother or sister.

Amanda: What -- wha -- what?

David: That's right. I want another child with you.

Amanda: Do you honestly think that I would trade sex for joint custody? You're out of your mind.

Aidan: Many agents out there in the field, they use message boards to get in touch with their contacts. Anyone can read what they've written, but people can just see that they're just talking about fly fishing or gardening or something when they're really actually transferring top-secret information.

Kendall: So Zach and I go into spy mode?

Aidan: You choose a site that Zach will go to. You know, one that wouldn't arise suspicion from the authorities.

Kendall: Like a hockey page?

Aidan: Exactly. And as soon as you make contact, you know, you invite Zach to go to a private chat room. And it doesn't have to be a hockey page. It can be anything. What is Zach interested in?

Kendall: Believe it or not, you know what? Zach loves -- he loves poetry. Yeah. So instead of talking about hockey sticks, I could always talk about poetry with him and tell him how I really feel.

Adam: I haven't felt like this since --

Zach: Since when?

Adam: Since that night.

Zach: You haven't felt like this since that night? What night? The night that Stuart was killed? When he was standing right here dressed like you? When he took a bullet for you? You mean that night? How do you do it, man? How do you do it? How do you walk into this room as if nothing happened? As if your brother wasn't shot right here?

Adam: I don't have to -- I need --

Zach: What I need is for you to tell me what you saw that night.

Scott: Hey, hey. Huh? What are you doing? You keep your hands off of him.

Erica: Ryan, what exactly is Zach doing to Adam to get him to remember? Oh, never mind. I don't want to know, do I? Do I? Ryan?

Ryan: Oh, I'm sorry.

Erica: You were a million miles away.

Ryan: How did you do it? I mean, you grew up with a single parent after a tough divorce. How did you get through it undamaged?

Emma: If you marry Adam, I'll tell everyone the truth: He killed his brother.

Annie: No, sweetheart, you can't. You can't tell anybody that secret. If you do, we might never see each other again. We don't want that, right?

Emma: I love you, Mommy.

Annie: Oh, oh, sweetie, I love you, too. I love you so much. And I know this is hard, and I know you're scared. But you just -- you just have to be -- be a good girl and keep your promise. Ok? Ok?

Emma: I don't want to live in that scary house, and I don't want you to either.

Annie: Honey, please.

Emma: I don't want Adam to kill you, too.

David: You know, I got to tell you. As much as I'd appreciate the idea of having you back in my bed again, I was leaning more towards artificial insemination. However, if that's something you'd like to do the natural way, hey, I'm all for it. Ok?

Amanda: So you want another one?

David: I would love Trevor to have a little brother or sister: Something I never had.

Amanda: Leo.

David: I loved Leo very much. But he was younger. And we didn't even know each other until we were grown up. Trevor deserves better than what I had.

Amanda: Most only children turn out fine.

David: Most, but certainly not all. I grew up alone and isolated.

Amanda: Well, you are certainly part of a unique situation, David.

David: You had a brother, right? Can you even imagine your childhood without Tim? Someone to play with? Turn to? Share memories with? I would love to give that to our son.

Amanda: Well, he has a sister. What about Marissa?

David: Yeah, come on. I mean, Marissa's approximately 20 years older than he is. And honestly at this moment, I don't think she really wants to be a part of this family.

Amanda: Ah. So that's what this is about. One kid bails, you got to fill up the void? Do you have a quota you have to fill of how many kids you need to obsess about at one time?

David: You know, I admit that in the past I was known for obsessing over children, ok? But now that Trevor's in my life, that has changed.

Amanda: You've mellowed? David Hayward has mellowed.

David: I'd like to think so, yes.

Amanda: I am sure you would love to think so. It's everyone around you that somehow misses that.

David: I tell you what. Why don't I sweeten the pot?

Amanda: Really?

David: Yeah. If you agree to have another child with me, not only will you get joint custody of Trevor and the new child, but you'll be free to go back to your husband. That way, we all get what we want.

Emma: He shot Stuart. Stuart died.

Annie: But that was an accident, sweetheart. I've explained that.

Emma: I don't want you to live there. I don't want you to marry him.

Annie: Ok, come here. Sweetie, do you remember how confused Adam was that night? He was so scared. He hardly knew where he was, and that's why we helped him. Remember?

Emma: He's a bad man.

Annie: No. No, sweetheart, Adam's a good man. He's a very good man. But somebody was drugging him to make him forget things. Adam does not remember picking up that gun, and he does not remember shooting his brother. He loved Stuart very, very much, and he didn't mean to shoot him. Adam -- Adam would never hurt anybody, especially me.

Emma: Because he loves you?

Annie: Yes. Yes. And that was a horrible, horrible night, and it was a horrible accident. But it's over now, and the great thing is you and I get to be together. Isn't that so exciting? I mean, I know you've -- you've missed me just as much as I miss you.

Emma: Spike and Ian miss their mom.

Annie: I'm -- I'm sure they do. But you know what's gonna be exciting? If you move in with us, we can decorate your bedroom. Maybe get you -- get you a canopy bed with lots of pillows?

Emma: Daddy wants me to tell the truth.

Erica: Many people survive their parents' messy divorces. I have.

Ryan: But it wasn't easy?

Erica: No, it wasn't easy. But I had a mother who loved me very much.

Ryan: I never wanted Emma to grow up without her mother.

Erica: You gave Annie every possible chance, and she took advantage of you every single time. She has put your little girl through so much trauma emotionally and physically in every way you can think of. Do not blame yourself. Ryan, you want to protect your little girl as much as I want to protect mine.

Ryan: But if Emma gets hurt along the way --

Erica: She'll survive because she has you. Ryan, we are so close right now. Zach is with Adam even as we speak, and I just feel so sure that he's gonna get him to confess to everything that happened that night. And then the courts are gonna protect Emma from Annie for a long, long time.

Annie: Your father and his friends don't want what's best for you. They want you to keep reliving that night. But I -- I want to protect you from that. I want you to just forget all of that scary stuff and just be happy. Can you do that for Mommy? We can be happy together like we used to be, but -- but it'll be even better now. I bet Adam would buy you a pony.

Emma: I don't believe you.

[Phone rings]

Erica: Oh, it's the designer I sent Annie to. Yes? Hi, Ricky. How is everything going? Uh-huh. No sign of her? Oh, no. That's ok, Ricky. Believe me, it's not your fault. Thank you so much. Oh, she never showed up.

Ryan: You ok? Yeah? Where'd your mom come from? What were you guys talking about? Hmm?

Annie: I -- I was just telling Emma I've changed my mind, and I wanted her to be the first to know. I'm not doing it. I'm not marrying Adam.

Adam: I'll be upstairs if you need me.

Scott: Let's go. Come on.

Adam: I'm not an invalid, please. Thank you.

Scott: What did you do to him?

Zach: Nothing.

Scott: The man can hardly put a sentence together. He's just -- did you put something in his drink?

Zach: No. Drink is fine. I like my scotch a little older, but it's fine.

Scott: What are you doing here, Zach, huh? Did you come to talk about the loan or something else?

Zach: Something else. Adam told Erica he wants to keep Kendall out of prison. Wants to help her stay on the run.

Scott: So, what, you manhandle him?

Zach: First of all, it's not true. He doesn't want to help Kendall. He wants her to stay the number one suspect, so he can go ahead with his wedding and pretend that the woman that killed his brother is not his bride.

Scott: Kendall confessed.

Zach: Yeah. But we all know what happened here. I'm concerned about Adam, too. He's gonna have to watch his back, because sooner or later Annie's gonna put a knife in it.

[Gun cocks]

David: I know this is a lot for you to take in. So why don't you think about it. Talk it over with Jake.

Amanda: If I have this baby, I get joint custody of Trevor?

David: And the second child. Yes.

Amanda: And I can move out? Live with my husband?

David: That's right. Listen, I have to go back to the hospital. So why don't you think about it, all right?

Amanda: What -- this is legitimate, David?

David: Absolutely. And there's no timetable. Take as much time as you want. All right? I can wait.

Singer: To help me carry on someday I know you'll walk away someday I know I can endure someday I won't be here to stay

Jake: So what did he have to say for himself?

Amanda: What are you doing here?

Jake: What am I doing here? Oh, I don't know. You drooped the whole "David's got a proposal" bomb on me. What? Should I wait around till I hear about it on the news tonight? Why do you look pale? Let me see something. Why is your heart racing?

Amanda: Uh, he wants another baby.

Jake: He wants another -- he wants another baby?

Amanda: Trevor to have a -- a little brother or sister.

Singer: ...You'll walk away

Jake: So it's not enough that my wife lives in his house and the baby lives in his house? Now he wants you in his bed, too? I swear to God I will kill --

Amanda: No, Jake, it's not like that.

Jake: Don't be naive, please! Don't -- don't be naive.

Amanda: Jake --

Jake: It's not -- you don't understand. This is exactly what it's like.

Amanda: Listen --

Jake: This is exactly what it's like.

Amanda: Jake, the baby would be conceived artificially.

Jake: I don't care if you do it through e-mail. This was the plan from the beginning with him. He wanted you to live in his house, he wanted to get rid of me, and then he'd have the perfect little family. Well, that's -- that's great for him. It's not so good for you. And you know what? For me, it sucks.

Amanda: Listen, there's more.

Jake: Well, I'm sorry. There's more? What? It gets worse?

Amanda: No. Actually, it gets better. If I had this baby, I get joint custody of Trevor and the new baby, and I get to move out.

Jake: Amanda, what happened with him and you -- it happened, and I've accepted that. And Trevor is -- is a blessing. But there's no way in hell I'm gonna help this man have another child with my wife. And you don't honestly expect me to do that, do you?

Ryan: You are so --

Annie: Get off me!

Ryan: What kind of games are you playing with Emma now?

Annie: Leave me alone.

Erica: What are you doing here? You're supposed to be working with that dress designer.

Annie: Well, I'm sorry I didn't fall for your little setup.

Ryan: Go ahead and tell Erica what -- the big news that you just told Emma. Tell her. Come on.

Annie: I'm not marrying Adam.

Erica: What?

Annie: I'm not marrying Adam. The wedding is off. You can jump for joy now, Erica.

Erica: You've been pushing this wedding down everyone's throats.

Ryan: So much for love. All right, what happened? So did he finally realize that you were just using him to get the charges dropped? Get custody of Emma? Or did you get tired of living a lie pretending that you loved him?

Annie: It's not like that. I love Adam. He is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Erica: That's for sure. So what happened?

Annie: You wouldn't understand.

Erica: That's good news.

Ryan: Mm-hmm. Now we just got to see how Zach's doing on his end.

Kendall: It's Zach's favorite poem: "She walks in beauty." Lord Byron wrote it after seeing a woman that took his breath away. I'll never forget the first time Zach read it to me.

Zach's voice: "She walks in beauty, like the night of cloudless climes and starry skies; and all that's best of dark and bright meet in her aspect and her eyes: Those mellow to that tender light which heaven to gaudy day denies."

Kendall: "One shade the more, one ray the less, had half impaired the nameless grace which waves in every raven tress, or softly lightens o'er her face; where thoughts serenely sweet express how pure, how dear their dwelling place."

Aidan: "And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, so soft, so calm, yet eloquent, the smiles that win, the tints that glow, but tell of days in goodness spent, a mind at peace with all below, a heart whose love is innocent."

Kendall: You know it.

Zach: You want to shoot me? Go ahead. Pull the trigger.

Scott: Or I could just call the police and have you arrested for harassment.

Zach: It's a good idea. Jesse would love that: Get him over here to interrogate Adam one more time. Maybe we'll finally find out what happened that night.

Scott: I'll tell you what happened. You and Kendall and David Hayward and God knows how many other people all came here that night for my uncle's blood. All armed and loaded for revenge. And any one of you could've done it. But instead, my father ended up in the morgue! So stop pointing fingers and casting blame, because I don't give a damn who pulled the trigger anymore. The truth is every single one of you is responsible for my father's death.

Zach: You're upset. I get that. You want to end it, so you pick up a gun. I did the same thing. Sometimes our emotions get away from us.

Scott: You stay back.

Zach: Hmm. Really? You want to do this? Never know how it's gonna end. I understand, Scotty. You want to protect your family. I want to do the same. What I don't understand is why you would want to protect the person who killed your father.

Jake: So let me just get this straight. Our plan to have children -- that's not on the table anymore?

Amanda: No, Jake --

Jake: What? You want me to get in line behind David to have a child with you?

Amanda: No. If we do this, then we can be together.

Jake: If we do this, it's insane. Having another child with David: Have you even thought of what the implications of that would be? I mean, you know, it's not like you can just pop out a child, hand it over, and not have emotional involvement. Not -- not to mention being more, you know, with this idiot every day. I --

Amanda: Stop. My life is with you, Jake, not David. And if it means that we could be together, live together, and have joint custody without the prison sentences hanging over our heads, then, you know, maybe it's worth it. And I don't think it could be so terrible to -- to give Trevor a little brother or sister.

Jake: Oh, my God. God. You're actually considering this.

Amanda: I did not say that I would do it.

Jake: You didn't say that you wouldn't do it.

Amanda: Jake, please don't leave.

Jake: You're not the only one that's got some thinking to do, ok, or to have a decision to make.

Ryan: Emma seems fine, but she's not telling me anything more about Annie's visit.

Erica: Well, Annie certainly wouldn't pull her claws out of Adam unless she had a very good reason.

Ryan: Like maybe Emma's ready to tell the world that her mother's a killer kind of put a wrench in the wedding plans.

Erica: Emma's been very upset about Annie's plans to marry Adam.

Ryan: So -- so, what? Do you think they made a deal?

Erica: Emma won't bust Annie for murder if Annie calls off her wedding to Adam.

Ryan: Good God: Being blackmailed by your own child.

Erica: Well, think about it, Ryan. What else could it be? I mean, Annie has been hell-bent on marrying Adam, and she certainly didn't put the brakes on just because Emma was upset. No, I mean, Adam is Annie's answer to everything. Everything she wants: Money, power, custody of Emma.

Ryan: And now Emma's never gonna come forward. I mean, she will continue to pretend she doesn't remember what happened that night in order to prevent Annie from marrying Adam.

Erica: Unless everything goes as planned on Zach's end.

Ryan: Yeah. And then we won't need Emma to expose Annie, because Adam will do it for us.

Annie: Where's Adam?

Zach: He's resting.

Annie: What happened? What did you say to him?

Zach: It wasn't me. It was the memories of that night.

Annie: Oh, that night? You mean the one where your wife killed Stuart? Why are you here? Why are you always causing trouble?

Zach: Those memories, man -- they have a life of their own now. They haunt everyone in this house. Isn't that right, Scotty?

Scott: Ok -- ahem -- it's time for you to leave.

Zach: Grief is a powerful thing. It clouds your judgment. It eats your soul. And very soon you won't even know who you are anymore, and you do things that don't make sense: Like protecting the person that killed your father.

Scott: You shut up.

Zach: Lust is the same thing.

Annie: Why can't you just leave us alone?

Zach: Lust, grief, guilt, secrets. You want to clear your head? You clear your conscience.

Annie: Get the hell out! If you ever come back, I'll kill you!

Zach: You still haven't answered my question. You know who shot your father. Why won't you put his soul to rest? Why are you protecting the person that shot him in the back?

[Gun cocks]

Scott: Annie, put the gun down.

Zach: You still haven't answered me, Scotty.

Annie: What part of "get out" do you not understand?

[Annie fires the gun]

Man: Mr. Chandler? Ms. Lavery? What happened? Are you ok?

Annie: Sorry. It went off accidentally.

Guard: Three times, ma'am?

Annie: Sticky trigger.

Adam: I just -- I just heard -- are you all right? I just heard the shots. What the hell are you doing here? What did he do?

Zach: Your fiancée fired the gun.

Annie: It was an accident. No one was hurt.

Zach: Lucky me. Usually Annie doesn't miss.

Kendall: You've been really quiet over there. You ok?

Aidan: Yeah. I just, um, that poem just brought back some memories, you know? Things I haven't thought about in a long time.

Kendall: Greenlee.

Aidan: You and Zach, you're really lucky. I mean, he loves you so much, and you love Zach so much. It's all I ever wanted, was for someone to love me back.

Kendall: You'll find someone.

Annie: Are you sure you're all right? What happened?

Adam: Oh, just a little --

Scott: Hey, drink this.

Adam: A little dizzy spell. I should've had more lunch. It's you I was concerned about: Slater upsetting you the way he did?

Annie: I should be used to it by now, right?

Adam: After we are married, that man is never gonna lay eyes on you again. I'm gonna protect you with everything I have.

Annie: Oh, you are so good to me.

Adam: Maybe you might want to try to look after that dove wrangler we were talking about for our wedding? Yeah, I've got some work to -- to do.

Annie: Whoa. Hey!

Adam: No, it's --

Annie: All right, that's it. I'm taking you to the hospital.

Adam: No, no, no, no. You do nothing of the kind. No, it's just -- it's just all the gunshots and those memories.

Annie: Ok. You know what? Why don't you just go upstairs and get some rest, and I'll be in to check on you. Ok? Come on.

Adam: Ok. I'm gonna take you up on that.

Annie: Ok.

Adam: Ooh.

Scott: All right, steady there. Are you out of your mind, huh? Shooting a gun off in the middle of a room like that? What -- what if you'd have hit somebody?

Annie: What was I supposed to do? Just stand here while you spilled the truth about Adam to Zach?

Scott: I wouldn't have told him!

Annie: Well, you were total mush. If I hadn't come in when I did -- I should've shot the bastard.

Scott: You are crazy.

Annie: It's all his fault. Everything is ruined. The wedding's off.

Scott: Whoa, whoa. What -- what?

Annie: You heard me. I can't marry Adam.

Erica: Annie actually shot at you?

Zach: She shot around me. She panicked.

Ryan: But this is what we've been waiting for, which means we're getting close.

Erica: Did the police come?

Zach: No, the police didn't come. So this really didn't happen.

Ryan: What -- what about the pills? What about Adam? Are the pills working?

Zach: I think they are. I pushed him about that night, and he was lost in memories. And he was about to say something, then Scott walked in.

Erica: And then Annie started shooting?

Zach: Yep. Next time I'll get Adam alone. I'll get the truth.

[Phone rings]

Zach: Excuse me one sec. What you got?

Jesse: Hey, I'm at your place. How soon can you get here?

Zach: What happened?

Jesse: Just get here.

Scott: What, you're not marrying Adam because Emma's afraid of him?

Annie: Yes. Emma is my daughter. She comes first. She always has. Everyone is just putting all this pressure on her to tell the truth about that night. That is too much pressure for a little girl. And Emma is really scared of Adam, and she said if I marry him, she will tell everyone that he killed Stuart.

Scott: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Emma's blackmailing you? Yeah. Yeah, like mother, like daughter, huh?

Annie: No, it's not like that. Emma is a good girl. I just -- I think she's always had this hope that Ryan and I would get back together, so that makes Adam the enemy.

Scott: Oh, my God. How far are you willing to play this? What, to make Emma happy? To keep her from telling the truth? What are you gonna do? Are you gonna throw yourself at Ryan now? Get him to marry you?

Annie: No. No. I just need to buy some time so I can talk to Emma again. I just need to help her understand that me marrying Adam is the best thing for everybody.

Scott: Oh. Translation: What's best for you.

Annie: I will never get custody of Emma without Adam.

Scott: Yeah. Well, you got bigger problems than Emma right now. Adam's starting to remember. When Zach was here, he was dazed and confused.

Annie: Is Zach drugging him?

Scott: I don't know. When I called Zach on it, he downed Adam's scotch to prove me wrong.

Annie: You do realize if Adam gets his memory back -- he can't. What are we gonna do?

Scott: Well, there's not a whole hell of a lot that we can do about it, Annie, because it's starting to bubble up to the surface. It's as if his subconscious is ready to let it out, make him pay for it.

Annie: My God. If Adam remembers that he shot Stuart --

Scott: Don't say it.

Annie: But you know.

Scott: Yeah, I know: It'll kill him.

Amanda: Do you know how many people love you? Your dad and me, your Daddy Jake. Poor Daddy Jake: He misses us so much. Yes, he does. All alone in this big house, stuck here without him. He just wants us to come home to him and be a family together. And I want to give him that more than anything in the world. But it's complicated. Because if I give Jake what he wants, then I have to give David what he wants. And in doing that, I might lose Jake. So, hey, if you have some answers, I would really love to hear them. All right? Huh, little guy? I can't hear you. I can't hear you. All I know is that I cannot lose you or Jake.

Jake: Can I ask you something? What kind of sick person are you?

David: Would you take this, please? You spoke to Amanda. So, what? You want to hit me? Does that mean you're on board with Amanda and me having another child? Wow, Jake. I got to tell you, that's very open-minded of you.

Jake: I know what you're trying to do, Dave. You're trying to break us up. No, it's not gonna work.

David: Good. I'm glad to hear it. Maybe you can babysit Trevor when Amanda and I go for Lamaze classes.

Jake: She didn't agree to do anything with you.

David: She didn't say no.

Jake: And now you're trying to break me. Do you think this is too much for me? Hmm? Forcing my wife to have another child with you? You think I'm just gonna sit on the sidelines?

David: No. I would think you're getting used to it by now.

Jake: Whatever she decides and what other kind of crap you try to pull, you are not gonna destroy us. Because I love her, and I'm not going anywhere.

Aidan: Here it is. Here's the site: villadiodatipoetrysociety.com. Password?

Kendall: Um, Ian.

Aidan: Ian. All right, you're all set.

Kendall: Thank you.

Aidan: Now you just have to post a message about the poem. Wait for Zach to see it and respond. And then when you're both online at the same time, you just move to a private chat room and voilá.

Kendall: Ok. Well, this is -- this is great, Aidan. It really is. I mean, this is a brilliant idea. But how will Zach even know to check this message board so that he can read my message to him?

Aidan: It's already taken care of.

Zach: So what's going on?

Jesse: I got an e-mail. I think it's from Aidan. Know anything about a web site called Villa Diodati Poet Society? Apparently Aidan thinks you'd be interested.

Zach: That's not from Aidan. It's from Kendall.

David: Liza, hi. It's David. No, no, no. Don't hang up. Listen, I was wondering if you had any free time tomorrow morning. There's a proposition I'd like to discuss with you.

Jake: So this is a crazy marriage.

Amanda: Yeah. Crazy, upside down marriage -- not exactly what we planned.

Jake: But it's what we got, right? So we have to make it work. Excuse me. Can you tell your mother that I love her, even if things are a little crazy, and we do things a little upside down?

Amanda: Listen, I want us to make this decision together.

[Trevor fusses]

Amanda: Yes. You and me. To decide whether I should have David's baby or not.

Jake: Well, it's, you know, your decision, really, because it's your body and it's your choice. And so you're the one who has to make the ultimate decision. And whatever you decide, I -- I'm with you.

Annie: Your generosity, kindness. Your love. I love you so much. And it's real, no matter what anybody says. And I'd give anything to be your wife. But I can't. Because if I do -- it's my turn to protect you now. And maybe someday you'll understand that I love you too much to ever hurt you.

Erica: Well, how is Emma?

Ryan: She's playing with Spike like nothing happened.

Erica: Oh. That's good. Isn't it? Maybe?

Ryan: But the one thing Emma wants more than anything is for Annie and me to get back together. And I guess my fear is that she's gonna use this secret and try to make that happen, use it to her advantage.

Erica: So you really think she would do that?

Ryan: Well, if she really is blackmailing Annie not to marry Adam, then -- I mean, come on. That's a lot of power for a little kid.

Erica: Because Annie has done so much that is wrong. But we haven't.

Ryan: Well, you and I together --

Erica: Well, Emma might not like what's happening between us. But it's not wrong.

Ryan: No, it's not. In fact, it feels very right.

Zach: "She walks in beauty."

Kendall's voice: "This poem is one of my husband's favorites. He says it reminds him of our love, how he felt when we first met. Darkness meeting light. When I hear it, I think of him, and I wish I could be with him."

[Laptop chimes]

Kendall: I got a response. I got a response! It worked. It worked. Aidan, Aidan, it's Zach. It's Zach!

Zach's voice: "You are with him: In his heart, his mind, his soul. Always only you."
