Marissa: Scott. What is it? What are you doing?
Scott: What I've wanted to do since the day we met.
Marissa: Scott --
[Scott kisses Marissa]
Marissa: Wow! That was unexpected.
Scott: You wished I hadn't have done it.
Emma: So can I stop lying to Daddy now that Kendall's gone away?
Annie: I'm so proud of you, sweetheart. You've been so brave. And now that you told everyone that Kendall shot Stuart, she's gonna be punished.
Emma: But it's not what I saw.
Annie: Emma, sweetheart, you have to forget what you really saw that night, ok? Or else you're never gonna be able to see me again. Wouldn't that be horrible? You have to promise me that you will never tell anybody what you really saw.
Adam: Who's on the phone?
Emma: I promise.
Ryan: Who are you talking to? And what do you promise?
Erica: I want you to give this to my daughter. I think she'll change her mind. All right, you should leave.
Liza: I need to get started on the appeal.
Erica: She obviously doesn't want to see you.
Liza: Well, she doesn't want to see you either.
Erica: Because you're here. You lost her case.
Liza: Kendall confessed.
Erica: A better lawyer would have kept her out of prison.
Liza: Houdini is dead, but I will get her out on an appeal.
Erica: No, you've done quite enough for my daughter, thank you. You're fired.
Guard: Hey, Slater? Your mom's not going anywhere. She wanted me to give you this.
Zach: Welcome home.
Kendall: I don't understand.
Zach: I had this room built when we constructed the house.
Kendall: Why?
Zach: Well, my father was leaving a trail of bodies all over the place, and I wanted a place where we can be safe in case we need it.
Kendall: How is it possible that I'm even here?
Zach: You're where you're supposed to be -- with me and our boys. You'll never leave us.
Marissa: No. It's just -- you know, you just -- you kind of caught me off guard. I wasn't really expecting a kiss.
Scott: Oh, no, no, no, no. Please. It's ok. I'm used to it. You know, "You're a great guy. We can still be friends." Right up there with, "My parents really like you."
Marissa: I really like you.
Scott: "Like." Yeah. Women love my shoulder to cry on when some ass dumps them. Women love my sense of humor on a Friday night when they don't want to sit at home alone. They love the occasional hookup with me between jerks.
Marissa: Scott, I would -- I would never do that to you.
Scott: I know. I know. And you'd never fall for me, because I'm not J.R.
Marissa: God. First Krystal, now you? I mean, why is everyone assuming that I'm love with J.R.?
Scott: Call me when you need that shoulder to cry on.
Ryan: Did Mommy give you the phone, Emms? You don't have to shut down on me again, ok? Really, I'm just trying to help you. I really am.
[Doorbell rings]
Jesse: Hey.
Ryan: Thanks for coming. Thanks for coming.
Jesse: What's up, Emma? How you doing, honeybunch? Ok. Something I said?
Ryan: No. No, no, no. I'm sorry about that.
Jesse: So what'd you want to see me about?
Ryan: Annie. She somehow got this phone to Emma. And I'm gonna go tuck Emma in right now, and I'll be right back. In the meantime, get a listen of the voice mail.
Adam: I know you miss Emma, but the judge has ordered no contact. Now, if they catch you at this, you're gonna be in worse trouble.
Annie: Emma misses me so much, Adam. How can I not pick up when she calls me? How can I not tell her that -- that I will be seeing her soon and everything's gonna be all right?
Adam: And it will be. You just have to be patient, sweetheart.
Annie: Emma needs me, Adam. It kills me that I can't be with her.
Adam: I know.
Annie: You know because you know what it felt like when Liza vanished with Colby.
Adam: No parent should ever be kept away from their child, no. That's why I promised you that you'll get Emma back.
Annie: I have faith in you. All I have to do is get these charges dropped and get this little number taken off me, and then...
[Annie sighs]
Adam: It'll happen sooner than you think.
[Doorbell rings]
Adam: Ah.
Annie: Dr. Nolan. Let's find out how crazy I am today, shall we?
Adam: Judge Robinson, please? Adam Chandler. Randolph? I hope your game has improved since those three bogeys you made last week. Yes, I demand a rematch, but right now I'm a little busy. I'm getting married. Yeah, well, she's a wonderful, wonderful woman, yes, wonderful. But she's gotten herself into a bit of a predicament, and you're exactly the person to help her out of it.
Annie: Here you go. I know my wardrobe isn't really appropriate for therapy session, but our air conditioning's out and it's just -- oh, it's just stifling. Oh.
Dr. Nolan: I'm sure it won't affect our session. I'd like to know your reaction to Kendall Slater being sentenced.
Annie: Justice. Finally.
Dr. Nolan: Yeah, but you were upset that several people thought you were guilty of this crime. How do you feel now?
Annie: I was upset at first, but it's over now. I can forgive everybody who thought I was guilty. You know, Kendall's finally getting what she deserves, and I'm finally getting what I deserve: A new life, a fresh start. See? Adam and I are engaged. Finally, a man who understands me, and I understand him. It's a match made in heaven.
Liza: Well, Zach and Kendall hired me, so you can't fire me.
Erica: Zach hired you. And based on what? A one-night stand? My only concern is to help my daughter. And the best way to do that is with a new lawyer who has my daughter's best interest at heart.
Guard: Your daughter still refuses to see you.
Erica: Guard, my daughter is obviously way too distraught to be thinking rationally. Please, if you'll just let me go to her --
Guard: I'm sorry. If the prisoner doesn't want to see you, there's nothing I can do.
Erica: But my daughter needs to know that she's not alone. She needs to know that she's loved and that she has our support.
Liza: Just give her some time to adjust.
Erica: She will never adjust.
Liza: Listen, I know this is a hard concept for you to get your head around, but you cannot control Kendall. You cannot make everything better with the wave of your Kane wand. Kendall is choosing to be alone. Accept it.
Zach: Drugs are wearing off.
Kendall: What drugs?
Zach: The drugs that Jesse gave you.
Kendall: Jesse's in on this? Zach, I don't understand. What is going on?
Zach: What do you remember?
Kendall: Um, I remember the judge giving me life. And Jesse -- he led me out of the courtroom. It was chaotic. There were reporters everywhere. Marian shot at me. And then everything happened so fast. Then you -- you led me back to the courtroom. We said good-bye again. And then Jesse led me out to the prison van.
Zach: What else?
Kendall: Jesse took me down this corridor. What are we doing here? Wait, what are you doing?
Jesse: Shh, shh, shh, shh.
Kendall: There was a woman. I couldn't make out her face. And then everything went black. You had Jesse drug me.
Zach: It's the only way.
Kendall: I can't believe Jesse would help you pull this off.
Zach: He believes you're innocent.
Kendall: Zach, no, I'm guilty. I confessed. They sentenced me. My God, you're not gonna get away with this. They're gonna have people looking all over for me.
Zach: No, they're not.
Kendall: Of course, they are. They're gonna turn this place inside out. Zach, think about what this will do to our boys.
Zach: There's not gonna be a manhunt. Kendall Hart Slater is in prison right now serving her time.
Jesse: Is she ok?
Ryan: Well, she's talking. That's an improvement, so --
Jesse: Annie did quite a bit of talking herself: 25 messages, one week.
Ryan: And she called the house phone. I busted her. She said the only reason she's been calling is to tell Emma that she's engaged to Adam.
Jesse: What?
Ryan: Yes -- engaged to Adam.
Jesse: Huh. Man must have a death wish.
Ryan: Annie is still trying to work my daughter, Jesse, and it's got to stop. It has to stop.
Jesse: How did she get this to Emma?
Ryan: I don't know. I don't know. Maybe she got to Emma the night that she broke in from the balcony. I'm not sure. But this is proof, right, that she's violated the court order repeatedly and aggressively. Am I right? House arrest has to be revoked now.
Jesse: What, because her mother wants to see her daughter? I don't know if that's gonna be enough for the court.
Ryan: When will it be enough? I mean, when will Annie be held accountable?
Liza: Hey.
Marissa: Hey. Oh, thanks for stopping by. You didn't have to come, though. I know how busy you are.
Liza: My mother almost killed you.
Marissa: She didn't.
Liza: Look, I am so sorry. I don't even know where to begin to apologize.
Marissa: Hazard pay? How's Marian?
Liza: They brought her to a Psych unit to evaluate her, but there's no visitors.
Marissa: She must be in a lot of pain, just so lost.
Liza: Without Stuart, she's, um, I don't know. I just -- I pray she comes back. Wow, this case has damaged so many people. I was so certain I could do this: Just get Kendall off, keep Zach and Kendall as a family.
Marissa: Kind of hard when she confessed.
Liza: And now she is shutting me out, and so is Zach. I went over to the prison to try and talk with her. She won't see me. And I tried to talk to Zach about the appeal, and he refuses to give me any of his time?
Marissa: If Kendall pleaded guilty, what good is an appeal?
Liza: Because I think I can get the confession thrown out on temporary insanity. I can get the conviction overturned.
Marissa: But if Kendall and Zach aren't interested, then why bother?
Liza: For justice. And, quite frankly, my career.
Marissa: No, this is about more than a career move. Something has got you -- I don't know -- spooked.
Liza: It's Zach. He was so driven to prove Kendall's innocence, and now it just seems like he's resigned to seeing her stay in prison. You know, I'm worried.
Marissa: You like him.
Liza: Oh, I -- I respect him.
Marissa: And you like him.
Liza: Listen, I was hired by Zach to get his wife acquitted. I don't like to lose, and I won't. So you, uh, you rest up. I'm gonna go work on that appeal. I'll check in with you later.
Marissa: Ok.
Liza: Ok. Yeah.
Marissa: She likes him.
Kendall: You found someone to pose as me?
Zach: That's the woman you saw before you passed out.
Kendall: Oh, my God.
Zach: Jesse got her on the van, and no one knows the difference.
Kendall: Anyone who knows me will.
Zach: That's why this woman is not gonna have any visitors in prison.
Kendall: For 15 years to life? What -- what kind of a person volunteers to go to prison that long?
Zach: It's not gonna be that long -- a couple weeks, a couple months. We have to prove that Annie killed Stuart. And by the way, this woman is not gonna have to work another day in her life.
Kendall: No, Zach, this is wrong. I won't do it. I won't.
Zach: I can't let you be discovered.
Kendall: So I can't get out? I'm your prisoner?
Adam: Chief Hubbard. Is there something wrong?
Jesse: Uh, yeah. Annie somehow got this to Emma. She left a ton of messages trying to get in touch with her.
Adam: She misses her daughter so much. It's -- it's hardly a crime.
Jesse: Well, it is in direct violation of the court order, Adam. And Ryan says he will press to send her back to prison if the calls don't stop.
Adam: You know, this is just getting started. Ryan in charge? Pounding his chest? Bullying Annie? I suppose he told you that Annie and I are engaged.
Jesse: Yeah. Congratulations.
Adam: And my first gift to my new bride will be getting her out from under all of these charges. Every one of them.
Jesse: And how do you plan on doing that?
Adam: Jesse, you know me. I'm a very, very resourceful man.
David: I'll have another beer. I saw you visiting Marissa today. I appreciate that.
Scott: I'm glad she's ok.
David: Yeah, yeah. She's really making a quick recovery. Thank God. You've really been there for her, and I don't mean just today. She lost her adoptive parents. You've lost Stuart, your mother. I mean, you really know what she's going through right now.
Scott: Yeah, that's what friends are for.
David: No, no. You -- there's a lot more in common between the two of you.
Scott: Uh, no. That's it. That's all we ever will be, is friends. Ahem.
David: Well, I wouldn't be so definitive. That could change.
Scott: No, it won't. Believe me, if I could pull off the prince of darkness thing, I might have a better chance of working myself up from friend. You got the whole prince of darkness thing going on.
David: Huh.
Scott: How about giving me some pointers?
Zach: Annie thinks you're in prison. She's gonna let her guard down. She's gonna relax. Once she slips, I will be there, and I will prove that she killed Stuart. And they're gonna put her away for the rest of her life, and you will be free.
Kendall: No, Zach, this is crazy. Please, please open the door and let me go. Please.
Zach: So you can do what? Go away for 15, 30 years for a crime you didn't commit? I'll go away, too. So will Jesse.
Kendall: I'll say that I escaped on my own.
Zach: No, that only works once. Our boys are not gonna have parents, and Jesse's life will be ruined.
Kendall: Ok, you kidnap me, and then you use that to blackmail me?
Zach: What I want is for you to be in here and relax. Try to remember, remember you didn't pull the trigger.
[Beeping]
Kendall: What is that?
Zach: This room is soundproof. That means somebody's at the front door.
Kendall: Wait a minute. You're actually gonna answer it?
Zach: Yeah. My car's outside. I don't want people to be suspicious. Think about what I said.
[Zach sighs]
Liza: I was just about to give up.
Zach: The boys are trying to sleep.
Liza: I understand.
Zach: What do you want?
Liza: Look, I just came from Kendall, and Erica was there, and she refused to see either one of us?
Zach: She needs to adjust.
Liza: Ok, I can understand her not wanting to see Erica -- her flittering around, deciding what accessories to wear with that jumpsuit -- but me? I'm her lawyer. I'm her best bet of getting out of there.
Zach: Maybe you are. But if Kendall doesn't want the appeal...
Liza: Ok, what is going on here? Zach, you're the one that said fight at any cost.
Zach: I'm also the one that said that you can do whatever you needed to for Kendall, but I will be here for the boys and focus on them.
Liza: I am still going through with this appeal, but it would be a hell of a lot better with your cooperation.
Zach: You don't need me. You've very good at what you do.
Liza: So, what, my career just falls apart and your family is destroyed, and that's ok with you? No, no. No, Zach. You know what? I just saved Kendall's life. You owe me. Payback starts now.
[Toddler babbling through the intercom]
Kendall: Spike.
Ryan: Hey. What happened?
Erica: I don't know what to do. I -- I don't know where to turn.
Erica: Kendall refused to see me.
Ryan: Oh, God, I'm sorry.
Erica: No, I -- I don't understand. I mean, Kendall and Zach have fought so hard for so long, and now it's just as if they have both just given up. And that doesn't make any sense.
Ryan: Well, maybe we just have to come to terms with the fact that this is what Kendall wants. This is her choice.
Erica: You sound like Zach.
Ryan: Well, the guy is Kendall's husband, so maybe we just have to let them work through this as a couple.
Erica: No, no, no. Kendall needs our help.
Ryan: Well, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do to help. I'm gonna go to Fusion because that's where I'm needed. That's where Kendall wants me to help. But as far as everything else, I -- I don't know. I'm a little bit confused, because it wasn't that long ago that you wanted me to stay as far away as possible from their marriage. And now I'm away. Now I'm -- I'm away, and I plan on staying away.
Erica: Ryan? I'm asking you to go as a friend, as somebody who cares about Kendall and maybe the only person that she will agree to see. Please? Please, Ryan? You've got to help Kendall.
Ryan: No, I don't.
David: So you want to be a badass, huh? Ok. Yeah. Well, first up, you got to make it all about you. What you want, need, crave, need to have. Then you go after it. Anything gets in your way -- morals, laws, people -- crush them into oblivion. I'm talking even the people you love. Now, they're the ones that you will hurt the most, yup, and most of them will end up hating you. Does it hurt? Yeah, absolutely it does. Because deep down you know you deserve it.
Scott: But you get what you want.
David: Sometimes. But then there are those mornings that you wake up regretting the bad choices, the carnage, body count. And then there are those days that you swear that you're gonna change: Do good, be a better person, live and let live. But, you see, here's the thing. Once it's in you, you can't stop. You got to feed the fire that's in your gut. That same fire that burns you and everyone else around you. The upshot? You end up alone sharing a beer with people that don't like you very much.
Scott: Thanks for nothing.
Adam: I, um, assume the session was a success?
Mr. Nolan: Ms. Lavery has made real progress.
Adam: As in "competent to stand trial"?
Mr. Nolan: That will be in my report, which will be in line with my recommendation.
Adam: Ah.
Annie: I did it! I did it! I'm gonna pass the evaluation!
Adam: Yes, I never doubted it for a second.
Jesse: Well, this is great news.
Adam: This is just the start. Everything's gonna be fine for you.
Annie: For us.
Erica: I thought I could count on you.
Ryan: You can count on me, Erica. But this? This -- I went to see Zach after you told me how we treated you, and, you know, we got into a little bit, and he was right. His marriage is none of my business. You know, it's -- and as far as Spike is concerned, that is my business. But Spike's happy right now. He's happy. He's with Ian, which is where I believe he should be for now. And my job right now is to focus on Emma, and that's what I'm doing.
Erica: Without the trial, at least Emma isn't gonna be pressured into testifying.
Ryan: There's still a lot of pressure -- from Annie. Somehow she snuck a cell phone to Emma, and she's calling her on it nonstop. On top of that, she's threatening to go for custody.
Erica: Oh. Well, there's no court anywhere that would give her custody.
Ryan: Now that she's engaged to Adam Chandler --
Erica: They're engaged?
Ryan: And she's got the boulder on her finger to prove it, yes.
Erica: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. The world's gone mad. Adam? Kendall? Zach? Now, I -- I really don't know what to do. I really don't know how to fix this. I don't know where to start.
Ryan: Maybe you can't. Maybe you just do nothing.
[Erica leaves]
Liza: Zach, this appeal is a thing that could get her off. Work with me here on some level. Or do you want her to stay in prison for the next 15 years or worse? So, what, at best, she comes out to watch your kids go off to college?
Zach: All right.
Liza: Right. So listen, I have got a doctor --
Zach: Not tonight.
Liza: All right. Then I'll be back in the morning.
Zach: Not in this house. I don't want this stuff around the kids, all these postmortem legalities.
Liza: What are you talking about, "postmortem"? Kendall isn't dead. There's a light at the end of this tunnel.
Zach: I'll call you.
Liza: Zach, I know this --
[Zach shuts the door]
[Spike coos]
[Spike babbles]
Zach: You found it.
Kendall: Listen to him. Spikey's bedtime vocals. I thought I'd never hear this again.
Zach: You'll stay?
Kendall: I want to see them, Zach. I want to hold them and kiss them and hug them.
Zach: You can't.
Kendall: Zach, if I can't be part of the boys' lives, I may as well go back to prison!
Zach: You will see them. That's why we're doing this. But we have to lay a foundation. Think about it. The boys are gonna tell everybody that they saw their mother. People have to think that it's their imagination, that's their way of coping losing their mom.
Kendall: So I'll be their imaginary mom? You think that'll work?
[Ryan turns on TV]
Man: You want to dance?
Woman: I'm not sure you can keep up.
Man: Whoa. I do something to offend you?
Woman: I don't like the way you're looking at me.
Man: It's all good. I swear.
Woman: I know I'm good. But I like a man to look me in the eyes.
Man: I'm actually more of a leg man.
Woman: Well, these legs could drop-kick you all the way across the dance floor.
[Ryan mutes TV]
[Erica watches her TV]
Man: Have I mentioned I'm a leg man?
Woman: With two left feet from the looks of it.
Man: Only one way to find out for sure -- dance with me.
[Phone rings]
[Erica mutes TV]
Erica: Hello?
Ryan: I just wanted to apologize.
Erica: Oh, Ryan, you don't need to apologize for anything. You're right. You have to stay focused on Emma.
Ryan: Yeah, well, she's dreaming sweet dreams right now, I hope. What are you doing?
Erica: Oh, I'm watching one of my favorite movies -- "Rumba to Romance."
Ryan: Ha ha ha! You're kidding me. I just turned the TV on. I'm watching the remake right now.
Erica: Ah. Well, the original is so much better.
Ryan: Yeah, originals usually are. Well, good night, Erica.
Erica: Good night.
[Ryan turns off mute]
[Erica turns off mute]
Marissa: You went to see Zach?
Liza: Well, yeah. Face-to-face is better.
Marissa: And it worked? He's on board?
Liza: Yeah. You know, there is just -- there's just still something. You know, Zach and I, we used to communicate pretty well, and now he's just closed off. And there's this look in his eyes, you know? Well, I don't know. I'm -- I'm worried. What?
Marissa: Are you always this concerned about your clients?
Liza: Ok, listen. Um, I do not have a thing for Zach. All right, that man loves his wife. He misses the hell out of her. And besides, it's not exactly like I have any time for that. I have a baby. I have Colby. I've got my career. I got my mother to take care of. I don't have any time for somebody who's not interested. Ok. So maybe I have a thing for him, but it's a little thing. It's a non thing. Really, it's one of those one-night-stand things.
Marissa: Yeah, you'll get over it.
Liza: Well, of course. That was really unprofessional of me, so I assume that you're gonna keep this between us?
Marissa: Absolutely.
Liza: All right. Um, I better get started on that appeal. Ok.
Kendall: Hey, Spikey. Mama's home.
Zach: And this is how it could be -- you here watching the boys grow up.
Kendall: And the world thinks the mother who kisses them and tucks them in is just a figment of their imagination?
Zach: Give me the time to prove that you're innocent.
Adam: We have a lot to celebrate.
Annie: Champagne.
Adam: You have passed your evaluation. The trial is a nonissue. And you are about to be free.
Annie: And married to the most amazing man in the world. Do you really think it's possible for me to get custody of Emma back?
Adam: Have I not given you my word? Hmm? Ah. Our happy ending is guaranteed.
[Annie giggles]
Annie: Ooh!
[When the champagne cork pops, Adam flashes back to a gunshot]
Adam: Oh, my God. Stuart?
[Knock on door]
Liza: What are you doing here?
David: Something we'll both regret in the morning.
[David kisses Liza]
Annie: It's not your heart, is it?
Adam: No, no. It's the heat. Um, I just overdid it today. I need to lie down.
Annie: Oh.
Scott: It's hotter than hell in here. It --
Annie: The repairman never showed. Want some?
[Scott removes his shirt]
Annie: What are you doing?
[then his pants]
Annie: What --
[then runs to the pool]
[TV plays]
Woman: Forget something?
Man: You, us. What we have, what we could have. I love you. I know you love me. Sure, we fight. We have our differences. But when the sun comes out, it's magic. Tell me you see it, too. Tell me we can have a life together.
Woman: They're playing our song.
[Singing in Spanish]
[Erica turns off TV and goes to bed while Ryan lies on his sofa]
Kendall: It's ok, my baby boy.
[Ian babbles]
Kendall: You're ok. You're ok. Mama's here. Mama's never gonna leave you again.
