Judge: I've reached my verdict. Will the defendant please rise?  The taking of a human life is the most serious of crimes I'm called upon to adjudicate. And while the stated reasons for the defendant's actions -- that is, her belief that her infant son had died because of Adam Chandler's actions -- is tragic, I give it no weight in calculating her sentence. Conversely, the defendant's attempt to flee I have given weight to. Kendall Hart Slater, having pled guilty to the charge of murder in the first degree of Stuart Chandler, I hereby sentence you to incarceration in the state penitentiary for the remainder of your life. A minimum of 15 years must be served before being considered for parole. The defendant will be handed over immediately and transferred to the facility. Court is adjourned.

Bailiff: All rise!

Liza: Listen, we are going to appeal this. We will get it lowered. Kendall, this is not over. It's not, you hear me?

Kendall: Can -- can we just go, please? Can we go now?

Liza: Nothing. Not even a good-bye?

Zach: It's what she wanted.

Reporter: Mr. Chandler! Sir, sir, how are you feeling? Sir, could we get a quick comment? Just a couple of questions? Mr. Chandler, do you feel justice has been served today?

Adam: Yes. I suppose so.

Reporter: Mr. Chandler, do you feel any sense of vindication for your brother's murder?

Adam: I just feel sad, that's all. No vindication. No winners. My brother's dead, after all. I would like to thank the D.A.'s office for its tenacity in pursuing this. That's all I have to say.

Reporter: Kendall! Kendall, could we get a quick comment?

Second Reporter: Kendall, one question.

First Reporter: Kendall, just a couple of quick questions. Kendall, do you have any regrets?

Second Reporter: Why isn't your mother here?

Third Reporter: Why didn't you go through with the trial?

Jesse: All right, folks, can we back it up, please?

Reporter: Do you intend to appeal?

Liza: Absolutely we intend to appeal. Mrs. Slater has two young children that need her. What happened to Stuart Chandler was a tragic accident, but it does not merit the harsh sentence that the judge handed down today. Let's get her out of here.

[Liza looks over at her mother who lifts up a handgun and fires at Kendall. Natalia dives for the gun while Scott wrestles Marian down until Jesse takes over]

Zach: Are you hit? Are you hit?

Kendall: I don't think so.

[Scott notices Marissa slumped against the wall]

Scott: Somebody call an ambulance! Oh --

Jesse: 1033. 1033. Gunshots fired in the courthouse hallway. We need an ambulance. One down. One suspect in custody. I need you to -- get her inside right now. Clear this hall!

[As she's being taken into custody, Marian sees she's hit an innocent bystander]

Marian: Oh --

Adam [sounding a lot like Stuart]: My God, Marian.

J.R.: And when my father kisses you?

Annie: It's very nice.

J.R.: I bet we could do a lot better than "nice."

[J.R. kisses Annie but she pushes him away]

Annie: Oh -- what do you think you're doing? What, do you think I'm stupid? One kiss from you and I'll admit I'm using your father for his money?

J.R.: Well, I'm willing to try again.

Annie: I love Adam, and Adam loves me, and there is nothing you can do to change that.

[TV plays]

Woman: No, es mi culpa, Paulo. Te lo juro.

[Knock on door]

[While Tad watches TV, Taylor sneaks in with Amanda's baby]

Liza: Is she alive?

Jesse: Yeah.

Liza: Oh. Ohh.

Jesse: This is Hubbard. I'm gonna take the prisoner out the back way.

Kendall: No, no. Please, please, Jesse. I have to know that Marissa's ok first.

Jesse: She's alive. Ok?

Natalia: Watch her, now.

Liza: She's my mother. Mom?

Marian: Oh, Liza. I didn't mean to hurt that poor girl.

Liza: Ok.

Marian: I didn't mean --

Liza: Ok. Ok. Shh. Mom, don't -- don't say anything more. Ok? Ok. I'm gonna make sure that they -- they take good care of you.

Natalia: All right, time to go. Let's go. Excuse me.

Marian: Liza --

Liza: It's ok. It's ok, Mom.

Natalia: All right, around this way, please.

Marian: Liza --

[Marian turns to Adam]

Marian: I had to try. You didn't have the courage. Oh, my God. What have I done?

Natalia: Come on.

Marian: What have I done?

Liza [to Adam]: It always comes back to you, doesn't it? If there's a gun or a murder or someone's life is destroyed, there you are, right smack-dab in the middle of it.

E.M.T.: Hold some pressure there, sir.

Scott: Ok.

E.M.T.: Let's go.

Taylor: Help me. I have an urgent baby question.

Tad: Oh, too bad. Here I was thinking you just missed me.

Taylor: I miss the baby whisperer.

Tad: What's the problem?

Taylor: He hasn't made his dirty diaper face since yesterday afternoon.

Tad: Oh. Is he eating ok?

Taylor: He's eating like a champ.

Tad: Well, then trust me, he'll surprise you -- probably when you put him in the car to take him home.

Taylor: Is that a subtle hint?

Tad: No. There's nothing subtle about it. Coming here was a really, really bad idea.

Taylor: I know. But the whole baby thing -- I'm still new to it. I'm not used to doing this by myself. Look how beautiful this baby is.

Tad: Yeah, he's definitely got the smiling thing down. If I didn't know better, I'd swear he was making the moves on you.

Taylor: He has got me wrapped around his finger. We've bonded.

Tad: The feeling's mutual, definitely.

[Knock on door]

Tad: Just -- here.

[Knock knock]

Amanda: Hey. The baby's gone. No one's over there. Have you heard from Taylor? Is something wrong?

Taylor: No, no, no, no. Honey, he's fine. Here.

Amanda: Oh! Thank God.

Taylor: Sorry.

Amanda: Hi. You have no idea what was running through my head, all the awful stuff. Hey there, sweet boy.

[Trevor cries]

Amanda: Oh, don't cry. Come on, Mommy's right here. Hi there. It's ok.

Taylor: Hey, boo. Hey.

[Trevor stops crying]

Amanda: Oh, no. Look what's happening. He -- he doesn't even know who I am anymore. Hey.

Krystal: What's going on down there?

Tad: [Whispering] Let's stash the baby.

Krystal: Hey. What are y'all doing?

Tad: A --

Tad: What is that?

[Tad turns off mute]

Newswoman: Interrumpimos "Todos Los Niños" para este informe especial.

Newsman: A shooting has occurred at the Pine Valley Courthouse.

Amanda: Oh, my God, that's the courthouse.

Tad: Oh, my God, that's Kendall's trial.

Newsman: One woman is reported in critical condition. The wounded bystander is an assistant to the defense.

Krystal: Marissa.

Natalia: Hey. So Marissa is en route to the E.R. Marian Chandler's headed to the station for booking. I'd like to ride with you to transport Kendall.

Jesse: No. I'm gonna need you at the station. Keep your eye on Marian. Make sure she's safe.

Natalia: All right.

Kendall: The hatred in Marian's eyes. Her husband is gone because of me. Marissa is hurt, and the whole thing is my fault.

Zach: Don't think like that. You're gonna need all your strength for what we have to do next.

Kendall: Just let them take me away. I'll be all right. We said our good-byes. Just go home, be with our boys.

Zach: I'm not giving up on you. I'm gonna take you home to your family.

Kendall: When I was in that coma, those months seemed like seconds to me. I didn't have any concept of time. I wish the next 15 years could be like that. I could just close my eyes one second, and the next I would open, you would be there. You'd be smiling down at me.

Zach: Yeah? Big, fat beer belly and gray hair? What?

Kendall: I think you'll look very debonair, even with a big beer belly. And you will look even more gorgeous with gray hair.

Zach: Oh, stop it.

Kendall: This was nice, even for a moment. It was just the kind of escape I needed.

Zach: Then we'll do it again. Go to sleep, and when you wake up, it's all better. It won't be 15 years.

Jesse: We're ready.

Zach: Hey.

[Kendall and Zach hug]

Kendall: Um, I'm gonna close my eyes. And when I open them, I need you to be gone. Please.

[Zach wipes Kendall's tears away then leaves. Zach watches someone mopping Marissa's blood away]

Zach: Why are you still here?

Adam: I'm not sure. I think I'm trying to make sense out of all this. It's not easy. I suppose you'll blame me for this, as well.

Zach: You lost your brother. I lost my wife. My kids lost their mom. Now Krystal may lose her daughter, too. I'm all out of blame, Adam. All out of blame.

Annie: Adam is the most loving, giving, passionate man I have ever met. We are genuinely in love with each other. But even if I weren't in love with him, and I wanted to be with somebody else, I certainly wouldn't cheat on him with a spoiled, immature drunk like you.

J.R.: Guilty of the drinking part but recovering. Now, as far as the immature and spoiled, well, I bet you have I been at points in my life.

Annie: You are an embarrassment to your father and your family.

J.R.: Ha ha ha! Well, at least I'm not a self-absorbed, money-sucking, mentally unstable waste like yourself. Oh, hell. Let's just shorthand the whole thing, call you what you really are: A whore.

[After Annie slaps J.R., he laughs at her]

Amanda: Marian? I -- I can't believe it.

Tad: Well, Stuart did mean the world to her.

Amanda: This all just keeps getting worse.

Taylor: It's my fault. I'm sorry. I'm gonna go back to the condo. I shouldn't never have brought him here.

Amanda: No, you shouldn't have. If Krystal had found out, she would've blabbed to David and the whole plan would've fallen apart. But I really appreciate what you've done for me and Trevor. And I promise I'm gonna find a way so that I can get back to him, and you can get back to your life.

Tad: Well, the important thing is we didn't get caught.

Kathy: A baby!

Scott: Stay with us. That's it. That's it. Good girl. Come on. Come on.

E.M.T.: Single GSW to the left chest. Doc, she lost a lot of blood. No head trauma. Nothing else.

Jake: Hang a bag of O-negative. Set a type and cross for at least 6 units up to the O.R., straight to the O.R. Only one lung?

E.M.T.: Yeah. We got breath sounds in the right lung.

Jake: Take plenty of pictures and alert the O.R. Let me see your fingers.

David: Get away from her! Marissa, it's David. I'm here. Ok? Your father's here.

Marissa: I'm scared.

David: I know. I know. It's gonna be all right. I'm gonna take good care of you. Ok?

Krystal: Oh, my God.

Scott: It's ok. It's ok. She's alive. They've slowed the bleeding.

David: All right, come on. Come on, let's go. Let's go!

Krystal: Please, please don't let her die.

Scott: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. David's operating on her?

Jake: Yeah, it looks like it.

Scott: Wait -- aren't there rules about operating on your relatives like that?

Jake: He's the chief of staff. He pretty much does whatever he wants to do.

Krystal: Jake, Jake, can't you get scrubbed up and go in there? He might need your help.

Jake: Yeah, I can do that.

Scott: What -- what was that about?

Krystal: David lost another daughter when she was very young on the operating table, and he blames himself. Marissa's the only daughter he has left.

J.R.: Ooh-ooh-ooh. Looks like I woke up scary Annie. What are you gonna do? Dive for the letter opener or go all slicer-dicer on me? Might be exactly what my father needs to get his mind above his belt for a change. No? I got you close, though, didn't I? I bet if you had a tire iron in your hand, you'd like to take a whack at me.

Annie: Shut up.

J.R.: Hey, Colby, you should've seen the reaction I just got out of Annie Nicole Smith here.

Colby: Quiet! Listen.

Newswoman: And that was the scene only a short while ago when the widow of the late Stuart Chandler attempted to gun down defendant Kendall Hart Slater. Seriously injured in the gunfire was an assistant to the defense attorney, Marissa Tasker. Mrs. Slater escaped injury and has been transported to the state penitentiary to begin serving her life sentence for the murder of Stuart Chandler. Marian Chandler was arrested and will undergo psychiatric evaluation.

J.R.: I'm gonna go to the hospital.

Annie: God, that's -- that's terrible. Your grandmother's already been through so much. What is it, Colby? Are you afraid of me?

Colby: Shouldn't I be? I'm here alone in the house with an insane person.

Annie: Insane is the last thing I am.

Tad: Well, you're certainly getting good at sneaking up on people.

Kathy: Who is she?

Taylor: She's a friend of mine.

Amanda: Come to visit Taylor from out of town.

Opal: A baby? Oh, what a beautiful little girl! Isn't she the cutest thing?

Kathy: Who is she?

Opal: I bet she is Taylor's niece. Isn't that right?

Taylor: Yes. This is my brother's daughter from Texas.

Tad: Yeah.

Taylor: Visiting for a couple of days.

Opal: Mm-hmm. Honey, could you go upstairs and check on Jenny for me? I got a feeling she's just about to wake from her nap.

Kathy: Ok.

Opal: Oh, you're a good girl.

Taylor: Wow, you must really be psychic. How did you know this is my brother's daughter?

Amanda: Um, so didn't you say you were -- you were running late?

Taylor: I did. I'm on my way.

Opal: All right, ladies and gentlemen, you can just drop the act right now. I do not have to be psychic to have figured out what's going on here. This is your baby, isn't it? This is the baby boy that you had to tell David had died. Tad. Tad Martin, what kind of a mess have you gotten yourself into now?

Rachael: I know it's gonna be difficult for you while she's gone. I'm here 24/7 if you need me. You know how much I love those boys.

Zach: Yes, I do.

Rachael: So you need me to stay the night?

Zach: No.

Rachael: Ok. I'll be back in the morning, then.

Zach: Actually, Rachael, I'm not gonna be needing you anymore.

Rachael: What?

Zach: I'm sorry.

Rachael: You're -- you're firing me?

Zach: I'm gonna pay you for the year, and I'll make sure you find another position. I know it's tough out there.

Rachael: I don't understand.

Zach: I'm gonna be here full-time taking care of the boys, you know, out of the nursery if I have to. But it's what Kendall would've wanted: On my own.

Rachael: If that's what you want. I'm gonna miss those guys. They're great kids.

Zach: Yes, they are.

Rachael: I'm sorry that you and Kendall are going through this. You can call me if you change your mind.

Zach: Come on.

Rachael: Bye.

[Phone rings]

Zach: Jesse.

Natalia: I'm so sorry.

Liza: She doesn't even know what she did.

Natalia: What about what you did? You know, you saved Kendall's life today.

Liza: And I got Marissa shot in the process. You are the hero. I mean, if you hadn't grabbed that gun --

Natalia: Instinct took over, I guess. I don't know. It was all pretty surreal, to tell you the truth.

Liza: Well, you're really brave.

Natalia: So do you know what's gonna happen to her next?

D.A. Willis: We're gonna transfer her to the psychiatric ward in the hospital. She doesn't belong in the jail here.

Liza: Thank you. Thank you. I was hoping you were gonna do that. I'd like to see her again.

D.A. Willis: Of course. Just once the shrink is finished.

J.R.: What the hell happened? How is she?

Scott: Shh. She's in surgery. Ok? Marian -- she, uh -- Marian just lost it. She, uh, she tried to shoot Kendall. And Liza pushed Kendall out of the way, and Marissa was hit instead.

J.R.: No. How did Marian get a gun in the courtroom?

Krystal: Probably some security guard is getting fired for letting a nice lady in the back way without going through the metal detector.

J.R.: But what do we know about Marissa? Is she gonna make it?

Scott: I don't know. David's operating on her.

J.R.: David?

Krystal: Jake is in there, too.

J.R.: This is just like Babe. This damn hospital, and we can't do anything about it.

Krystal: No. Listen. This is gonna be different. We have to believe that. David?

David: I couldn't do it. I froze up.

J.R.: You let her die, you son of a bitch.

David: Marissa is not dead.

Krystal: Oh, thank God.

Scott: But you just said --

David: Jake finished the operation.

J.R.: You should've never been in there in the first place.

David: I looked at Marissa's face, and I saw Leora. Her pressure started dropping and I just -- I just froze.

Liza: Mom, they're gonna take you to the hospital.

Marian: Well, uh, what about Stuart? Who is going to get his dinner?

Liza: Mom, S -- Stuart -- he's, um --

Marian: Oh. Yes. Yes, he's gone. I try not to think about that, Liza, because it's so painful. Darling, what -- what am I doing here?

Liza: Mom, you don't remember what you did?

Marian: Well, I -- I -- ahem -- remember I went to the courthouse to see that -- that horrible woman punished. I was very angry, Liza, because they were going to let her live. And, eventually, they would let her out, because they always let them out. And I just didn't think that was fair. It's just -- it's not right. Not right.

Liza: I know. I know. And I -- I'm gonna take care of everything here with the police. Ok?

Marian: I did something very bad, didn't I?

Liza: But I'm gonna take care of you. Ok? You believe me, don't you?

Marian: Oh, yes. Yes, I do. Oh, it's so nice having you home again, Liza. Have I told you that?

Liza: Yes, Mom. It's good to be home. It's good.

Natalia: It's time.

Liza: Ok, Mom, it's time to go. Ok?

Marian: Yeah. Ok. Of course. And -- oh, honey, we've got to have lunch at the Yacht Club soon, because you and I have so much to catch up on. [Chuckles]

Liza: Yeah.

Marian: Ohh.

Liza: I love you, Mom.

Marian: Oh, honey, I love you, too. I love you, too.

Liza: Ok.

Natalia: All right, this way, ma'am.

Marian: Ok. Bye.

Liza: Bye-bye. [Cries]

Annie: I've done some bad things, yes, but that's all in the past. I'm starting anew again, and Adam understands that. I love him and I'm gonna marry him. And I know that might difficult for you, but --

Colby: Difficult? Laughable is more like it. You're still the wrecking ball you've always been. Have you ever had a relationship you haven't trashed? Ryan? Aidan? Even your own daughter? How will it be any different with my dad?

Annie: Ok. I'm trying to avoid any wicked stepmother stereotypes in our relationship, Colby, but it seems you're really trying to push the issue here.

Colby: Relationship? You and I have no relationship and never will.

Annie: Oh, thank God you're all right!

Opal: Well? Am I right or am I just spitting in the wind here?

Amanda: Yes. That's my son.

Opal: Well, I'm mighty glad he's still alive, honey. And I, of course, understand why you thought you had to do this -- Dr. Dave finding out and all. But, uh, it's a pretty devious plan -- devious in a good way. I mean, whose idea was it to put him in a dress? Well, you're gonna give him a complex you keep this up too long.

Tad: Well, we all thought it was a pretty good plan.

Opal: Mm-hmm. Well, as I said, I don't disagree with the goes-into. It's the coming-out-of I'm wondering about. I mean, what do the three of you have on your mind, and how the devil do you expect to keep it from the evil Dr. Dave?

Jake: Hey. She pulled through. I moved her up to recovery. So if you want to see her, I'd get up there.

Scott: Yeah.

David: I've been wasting so much time chasing after Amanda and our baby, not realizing that all the while Marissa was right there, right in front of me.

Krystal: And she's been busy trying to get the two of us back together.

David: And she doesn't realize that's a waste of time, does she?

Liza: Oh, God, no.

Krystal: Marissa pulled through the surgery. She's gonna be ok.

Liza: Oh, my God! You have no idea how guilty I've been feeling. I mean, after all, I'm the one that hired her.

David: And it was your mother who pulled the trigger. And thanks to you, instead of Kendall taking the bullet, it was my daughter.

Liza: It -- it was an accident. I certainly didn't mean to hurt Marissa.

David: Yeah, but she is hurt. And she almost died.

Krystal: How is Marian?

Liza: She's, um, ahem. She's in the psychiatric ward for observation.

David: That's great. Great. Well, you got what you came for, right? So why don't you just leave? You almost cost me the only family I have left.

[Liza leaves]

David: Oh. I will never let people in this town hurt our daughter ever again.

Liza: David and Jake both said that she's gonna be fine. You know that bullet just missed her heart?

Zach: That's good.

Liza: Yeah. So how you doing?

Zach: Good. I'm good.

Liza: Listen, I'm gonna start on that appeal first thing in the morning. I've got a couple of ideas for some angles that --

Zach: Not tonight.

Liza: Yeah. I understand. Huh. It's gonna be kind of weird, huh, not having Kendall here? Probably gonna need some extra help with the boys.

Zach: Nope. I'm gonna take care of those kids myself.

Spike: Where's Mommy?

Colby: How's Mimi?

Adam: All I know is that Marian has been arrested and evaluated.

Colby: I'm sorry.

Adam: You know about, um --

Colby: About your engagement? Yes. It would've been nice to hear it from you.

Adam: Well, I just assumed you -- you didn't care. You've spent all of your time with your mother and the baby. I just assumed you'd made a clean break with me, and I'm surprised to see you even here.

Annie: Well, she heard about the shooting. And even though she knew you and Liza were at the courthouse, she wanted to see you and make sure you were all right.

Colby: Do you mind? I don't need an interpreter here. And I'd appreciate both of you leaving my mother out of it.

Adam: Colby, you don't have to make a choice between your mother and me.

Colby: Save it. You made my decision for me. I'm with Mom now. There's no room for me here with this in the house. Have a great wedding. Just don't bother sending me an invitation.

Zach: So, guys, do you remember how I told you that Mom was gonna maybe go away for a while? Well, that time is now. But we can go see her every week, and we can talk to her on the phone and -- well, I'm gonna be here a lot. I'll work out of the house. All right? So I'm gonna be around all the time. And even if your mom isn't here, you can't see her, it doesn't mean that she won't be here. And she's gonna get a little upset if you throw her pillows around.

Spike: Where's Mommy?

Zach: She'll be here. You know why? Because she's right there.

Spike: Where's Mommy?

Zach: Daddy's gonna take care of her. And your mom loves you very much, both of you guys. You know that, right? Always been your heart.

[Spike babbles]

Zach: Yeah.

Adam: For the longest time I wanted Kendall gone, just gone. Revenge for what she'd done to my brother. But I saw that revenge in Marian's eyes. It was madness. As mad and insane as Stuart's murder was. Runaway grief is an ugly thing. Forgiveness is so much more liberating.

Annie: I feel liberated. Now that Kendall has finally confessed, I feel like we can finally put this all behind us.

Adam: When I heard that shot, all I could think about was that night and Stuart -- Stuart's death. God, how I miss him!

Annie: You have to stop this. Ok? You have to stop this. You have to put that out of your mind. We're getting married. We're starting a life together. I don't want you to think of that awful night ever again.

[Annie and Adam hug]

Taylor: And I'm just keeping the baby at my place for the time being.

Amanda: And after a couple of months, Jake and I are going to start talking about adopting a baby, and the baby we're gonna adopt is this one.

Tad: Then this round of baby-maybe will be over, hopefully.

Opal: Well, that's just about the worst plan I ever heard in my whole life.

Tad: Well, it was Jake's idea.

Opal: Yeah, well, and you know Dr. Dave -- as sure as the Lord made little green apples, he is gonna find out. How many times has he almost tripped you up already?

Amanda: A few.

Tad: It's been rough.

Opal: Yeah. Now Kathy knows. Next, it'll be Krystal, and then it's over and out.

Amanda: Well, Jake thought it was a good plan.

Opal: Honey, Jake is a prince among men. We all agree about that. But he isn't perfect, and neither is this plan.

Tad: Well, Mama, do you have a better one?

Opal: Well, as a matter of fact, I do.

Liza: Zach, can I, uh, can I get you anything? Make you something to eat or maybe a drink? God knows you could probably use it.

Zach: Actually, I'd like to be alone with the boys right now.

Liza: Ok. Well, if you need anything --

Zach: Thank you.

[Zach goes over to his bar and pours himself a drink]
