[Di screams as a lizard jumps out of the box of red roses that was delivered to her.]
Del: What happened? Did you get stuck with a thorn?
Di: Him.
Del: Whoa. Who sent you that bad boy?
Di: No, no, give me that.
Sam: Aunt Julia.
Julia: Sam, you're not supp -- damn it. Come here.
Sam: Oh.
Tad: Uh, it's my bad for breaking up the family reunion, but we got some things to do.
Sam: Yeah, we -- we got to call 911, get the cops here to protect you.
Julia: No, Sam, no police. If they come for me, I'm dead.
Lily's voice: When Sam told me the Wildwind ghost was really Julia, we realized that Ryan's ghost might not be a ghost either. It might be him alive.
Babe: Greenlee? Are you ok? You look like you've seen a ghost.
Kendall: That was no ghost at the casino. That was Ryan in the flesh, alive.
Zach: Ryan's alive? You can't be serious.
Kendall: Don't play me, Zach. You know damn well he's alive. You've known it since the day he died.
Ryan: You're my brother, and I love you, and I will never, ever walk away from you again, never. So if you're going out, I'm going out with you.
Jonathan: I have to, Ryan. I have to. You finally get that, don't you?
Erin: Jonathan --
Ryan: Erin, get out.
Erin: For God's sakes, don't!
Ryan: Erin, get out!
Jonathan: Come here. Please? We should all be together. Please! No!
Ryan: No, this is not about Erin. This is about me and you, ok? I hurt you. I let you down. My God, I let everybody down. I deserve whatever is coming to me.
Jonathan: You don't want to die.
Ryan: It's ok.
Jonathan: You don't want to die.
Ryan: It's all right. It's ok. It's ok. I'm already dead.
Greenlee: What are you doing here? If you're passing through, don't let me stop you.
Babe: You work in a bar long enough, everything starts to smell like beer. That's much better. What brings you out this way?
Greenlee: My car. Guide book says the air is fresher down the road.
Babe: You know, there's a little chapel. It's a bit deeper in the woods. I used to go there when I needed to feel close to someone I thought I lost.
Greenlee: And you're telling me this why?
Babe: Because you looked a little lost when I got here. I thought maybe you were here because of Ryan.
Greenlee: What do you know about Ryan?
Babe: That you must miss him a lot. I haven't had the chance to tell you how sorry I am.
Greenlee: Babe, have you ever loved someone with your whole heart?
Babe: Well, yeah. Little Adam.
Greenlee: Other than your son?
Babe: Yes. I've loved someone that way.
Greenlee: Would you ever -- can you picture a situation where you would turn your back on that someone? Just walk away?
Babe: I've done it.
Greenlee: Why?
Babe: Because I loved him so much, more than my own life.
Ryan: I'm dead. Hocket, you can't kill me.
Jonathan: Let me go. Let me go. Let me go!
Erin: Ryan, do it. Ryan --
Jonathan: Let me go, let me go!
Ryan: Ok, ok. Ok, I'm going to let you go, but I am -- and I am staying close. I'm not going anywhere. I am never going anywhere.
Jonathan: You're not dead. You're not dead. You're not dead. You're not dead like -- like Dad and Braden because I -- I see them and I hear them, but I can -- I can feel you.
Ryan: Yeah.
Jonathan: You're not dead. You can't be dead, Ryan.
Ryan: It's ok. It's ok. I killed myself back in Pine Valley.
Jonathan: Why? Why? Why? Why would you do that? Why would you --
Ryan: Shh. Trust me. Because -- listen. Listen to me. I felt what you have been feeling for years, Hocket. I know what it's like to be you -- no dreams, no future, just nightmares, all the time hating myself, pain nonstop. I know. Panicked and desperate, searching for an exit but only seeing one way out, so I got on my motorcycle, and I drove off a cliff.
Jonathan: No.
Ryan: Yes, and I swore -- I swore that it would be the end, but like some cosmic joke, I survived. But I couldn't let anybody know, so it went from rescue to recovery to presumed dead, and it's better that way. Ryan Lavery is dead to the world.
Jonathan: No. No. No. No, no, Ryan, this isn't you. This isn't you. You're -- you're a survivor. You come back strong, Ryan. Ryan, you can't give up. You don't give up. You don't give in, Ryan! You don't --
Ryan: Shh. I changed. I changed. I changed the day that I thought I killed the brother that I love.
Zach: Ryan -- that's impossible.
Kendall: Stop. Stop. You cannot play me the way you did Lily.
Zach: Lily's my friend. She's family, and she's nobody's fool.
Kendall: Yeah, well, you sure did trick her into thinking that you're human, because she talks you up every chance she gets.
Zach: Yeah? Remind me to slap her around the next time I see her.
Kendall: You did a number on Lily at the casino when she saw that phantom Ryan. Yeah, Lily just came over to Greenlee's house a little while ago, and apparently she wasn't the only one who saw Ryan the friendly ghost. You saw him, too. You even had a little chat with him. He was real.
Zach: Go on.
Kendall: It was Ryan. It was Ryan undead, and Lily tried to talk to me about his ghost, but you cut her off, because you knew Ryan was alive. You hid him in that shed at the casino, and you hid more than just his broken helmet.
Zach: I'm hooked. Keep going.
Kendall: And that phone call, that phone call at Greenlee's house -- you tried to dismiss it as a crank call. That woman was calling for Ryan -- not the dead, not the deceased, but Ryan alive and very much with us. You knew it the whole time, and you worked the biggest cover-up since Watergate.
Zach: Wow. That's a lot of information, Kendall. When did you see Ryan?
Kendall: I haven't, not since that night.
Zach: So you're resurrecting Ryan based on a crank phone call, a beat-up helmet, and the fact that I had to humor Lily?
Kendall: It's a lot more than that, and you know it.
Zach: I do know it. It's your desperate need to bring back your one true love of your life.
Julia: Sam, listen hard, ok? You can't bring the police into this.
Sam: But that lady cop who was here -- she said to call if I saw you. They want to bring you in, keep you safe.
Julia: How do I make you understand this? I've done safe. Safe never worked for us. Ok? It won't be protective custody. They'll put me someplace so deep, I'll never see anyone again. Sam, listen to me. Your Uncle Noah was murdered, and the police are going to let his killer get away, all right? This is my fight, my terms, and nobody's going to get away with Noah's murder. All right? Nobody's going to have control over my life anymore. Nobody's going to be in charge but me.
Sam: Ok. No calling the cops. I swear. But you can forget about the solo thing. Sign me up. I'm working on your side now.
Tad: Not a chance, Sam.
Julia: No, Sam, you have to stay out of it.
Sam: But I can help you.
Julia: I like my heroes alive, Sam. You've got to stay that way. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to you.
Tad: That's why you can't be involved. Your aunt's got to lay low for a while, which means you're going to be going to Brooke's.
Sam: No way. I am here with Aunt Julia 24/7.
Julia: You blow off Tad, I'm out of here.
Sam: No, you can't go. You could get killed.
Julia: Better me than you.
Di: "My beautiful Di -- the aqua satin dress you wore yesterday suits you so much better than prison orange or your basic black."
Del: I released your scaly friend into the wilds of Adam’s begonia beds.
Di: Thanks, Del.
Del: So, who sent you the dozen roses and lizard gram?
Di: Oh, it was a practical joke.
Del: I didn't hear a whole lot of laughter in that scream.
Di: It's a private joke from a friend. Forget it.
Del: And since when do friends say "Ha" with a nasty reptile? That was a warning. You're in some kind of trouble, Dixie.
Di: That's just your writer's imagination.
Del: No. It's not my imagination. I know you're in trouble, because that trouble paid me a little visit.
Sam: Aunt Julia, you can't leave. They could be watching. It's way too dangerous.
Tad: That's why you've got to stay away, Sam.
Sam: I can handle whatever's out there.
Tad: Maybe you can, maybe you can't. I'm not about to let you try. But I give you my word I'll do everything I can to protect your Aunt Julia.
Julia: Sam, if you're linked to me, you might end up having to go into hiding like Noah and I did.
Tad: You don't want to go there.
Julia: So go to Brooke. We'll -- we'll be a family again as soon as this is over. I promise.
Sam: This sucks. But I'll go. Welcome back to the family.
Tad: Well, that's progress. You just called a Santos "family."
Julia: Love you, Sam.
Tad: Sam, I got to run an errand. If you wait in the car, I'll drive you to Brooke's. Lock this door. Don't open it for anybody. I'm off to keep my word, see if I can work on that prime suspect of yours.
Julia: Di Kirby’s got to know the Sturgess connection to Noah's murder. Then I can go dragon hunting.
Di: Get your own flowers.
Del: And my own dragon-faced friend? No, thanks. So, New York, starving writer -- that's me. These two guys pay me a call, invite themselves in.
Di: Yep. You must have been behind on your rent. They were coming to collect.
Del: No. That's another story. No, this pair -- it was right around the time you got released from prison. Nicely dressed, good manners. They wanted to know if I'm in touch with my sister Di. I say no, they get a little more intimate, and I get the feeling that they wouldn't like it if I was lying.
Di: Well, you weren't. We hadn't seen each other since the kidney transplant.
Del: Well, it must've been my honest face, because they finally backed off. But they wanted me to give you a message if I ran into you. It seems you already got the message. A Mr. Kevin Sturgess is anxious to get in touch.
Di: Kevin is an old boyfriend who still has a thing for me. He's not dangerous. Neither were the suits he had call on you.
Del: So all money bags wants is another shot with you?
Di: Yep. And so I -- I got in touch with him to tell him it wasn't going to happen. He's not going to bother me again.
Del: Uh-huh. And the lizard and the roses -- that's just his way of saying "Thanks for the memories"?
Di: The flowers aren't even from Kevin. They're -- they're from a buddy who just got paroled. Because we had this -- we had this joke. We called our cell block "The Reptile House" -- you know, like in the zoo.
Del: I'm not buying it.
Di: We used to call the matron "Rhonda the reptile."
Del: My story is way sexier. But you can read all about it when my book about you hits the shelves.
Di: Del Henry, you will not write one word about Kevin Sturgess. Are we clear?
Jonathan: You changed because of me?
Ryan: When I pulled the trigger, and I shot you, it hit me. I was Patrick Lavery right down to the ugly fist.
Jonathan: No, no, no, no. You're Ryan. You're Ryan, the one who escaped. You're the good one.
Erin: Don't lie to him now, Ryan.
Ryan: I'm not the good one. I'm not the good one. I didn't escape. Dad's rage is inside of me, and it didn't come out. It didn't come out until I lost you. My God, I could've gone off on anyone, Hocket. I would've gone off on anybody. I would've taken anybody down -- first strangers and then -- and then others. Some jerk who came to my door, I nearly strangled the life out of him. I had no control. You know, and people I cared about -- Kendall, I came this close, this close to breaking her face. Greenlee, my wife, the woman that I love more than anything in the world -- I came this close, my fist to her face.
Jonathan: No.
Ryan: Yes. Because she tried to help me. But there was no point, there was no use, because I was beyond help -- I knew that. But there was a sliver of me that said, "You cannot hurt anybody that you love ever again," and so I killed myself.
Jonathan: No, no, you -- you're here. You're here, Ryan. You're still alive. You're still alive, Ryan.
Ryan: I know. I wake up every morning, and I open my eyes, and I take that first breath. And then I remember that I'm dead. And you know what that's like, Hocket. I know you do.
Jonathan: Cold, black, nothing. Nothing. It's dead. It's all dead.
Ryan: I was so wrong. I was so wrong to think that I was better than you. Big brother -- I thought I could save you. I thought I could save the whole freaking world. I couldn't save anybody -- not you, not anybody. I needed saving, and I need to be saved just as much as you do.
Del: So this Sturgess guy -- he's more than an ex? He's trouble, a threat?
Di: No, Kevin is not a threat. He's -- he's just a freak about his privacy. I'm not real sure he'd like to be the highlight of your story.
Del: Well, admit it. You're afraid of him. The lizard was some sort of a warning.
Di: Would you drop it, Del? Please, leave it alone.
Tad: I knew that sooner or later, you'd regret having laughing boy around.
Di: Tad. Hi. What a nice surprise.
Tad: Ordinarily, I'd take that as a compliment, but I don't think I'm the one who's got you shaking. So, what did you do now?
Del: Nothing. I was just giving Dixie a hard time about living in the same house as Adam let alone the same zip code.
Tad: Your sister is here for her son and Little Adam, not the maid service, so why don't you lay off? Why don't you get your purse? I'm going to take you away from all of this.
Di: May I ask where?
Tad: Someplace we've been before, someplace private where we can take care of some unfinished business.
Di: I'm all yours.
Kendall: You're wrong. I don't want Ryan back in my life. And even if I did, I wouldn't make up some ridiculous fantasy about him being alive.
Zach: Don't look now, wifey, but you already have. You're telling me that I'm hiding the living, breathing corpse of your ex-lover.
Kendall: Well, I don't hear you denying it.
Zach: Let's run down the facts. Number one, there is no way Ryan could've survived that fall.
Kendall: You did.
Zach: I wasn't -- wasn't doing 85 on a Japanese motorcycle. Number two, if he had by some miracle survived it, he wouldn't last this long playing dead.
Kendall: Not unless he had someone like you helping him out.
Zach: He was in the newspapers for a year when he was running Cambias. Somebody would've recognized him.
Kendall: Yes. Someone did -- that woman who called, and you dismiss it as nothing.
Zach: And number three -- and you can't fight me on this -- I hated Ryan. He was no use to me alive or dead, so why would I be helping him? Don't get anything out of that door.
Kendall: Really? Well, you seem to get off on helping perfect strangers stay alive, even when they're better off dead. Mm-hmm, yeah, so why not Ryan?
Zach: And there it is -- the real reason why you're coming up with this crazy story. I'm helping your old pal Julia Santos, and you hate me for it. You want to make me pay for it. It's not Ryan rising from the dead. It's the old spiteful Kendall, back with a vengeance.
Greenlee: When you walked away, what were you thinking? How was breaking their heart supposed to help them? What excuse did you have for wrecking their life?
Babe: This person, this amazing person -- he wasn't getting something he really wanted, something important, because of me.
Greenlee: How did you mess him up? Steal his baby?
Babe: He needed to be rid of me, so he could have a life, a great one, so I did the only thing I could. I set him free.
Ryan: I am you, Hocket -- damaged, lost, angry, just like you.
Jonathan: You got hurt, and you need to be saved.
Ryan: But I didn't think it could happen. I thought I was beyond saving, and so I died. And then I found you here, alive. My God, Hocket, maybe there is hope. Maybe you survived for a reason. Maybe I survived for a reason. Maybe you -- you can save me. You're it, Hocket. You are my last, best, and only hope. But it's up to you. You can take me with you, or you can save me by saving us both.
Jonathan: So I'm not -- I'm not the only bad one?
Ryan: You're not bad, Hocket. You've been hurt, damaged.
Jonathan: I disappointed you the way I disappointed Dad.
Ryan: No. Uh-uh. I let you down. I need you to reach out to me. I need you to help me, Hocket. Only you can do it, only you. Do it for me. Do it for me.
[Jonathan reaches under the bed and disconnects the wire from the sticks of dynamite.]
Jonathan: It won't go off now.
Ryan: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Zach: Let's recap.
Kendall: Ahem.
Zach: My dear friend, the great Saint Ryan, is a living miracle, and I am the bad guy who's helping him stay dead. Is that -- is that correct?
Kendall: Yeah. Makes sense to me.
Zach: Yeah. Because, why? Because I'm just a horrible person who likes to cause pain and watch people suffer? Ok, I'll take that. And now you've taken it upon yourself to show and remind the rest of the world what an awful man you married. I treat you badly, I've embarrassed you, and I've hurt your feelings, because I'm paying attention to another woman. It's payback time. So you're coming after me. Ok, that's good. Well, you're not going to hurt me because, as you well know, I don't have any feelings. If you're going to keep forcing this, then you will hurt someone, hurt the person that you call a friend, the one person who's grieving for Ryan even more than you.
Greenlee: You hurt someone to set them free. Does this guy get why you did it?
Babe: No. He accused me of not having enough faith in our love. But I don't regret it for a second. He's much better off without me.
Greenlee: You don't get to decide that. You don't get to decide what's best. Ryan took off so he wouldn't hurt me, to protect me. Oh, my God. Please.
Babe: Greenlee, I didn't mean to upset you.
Greenlee: God, if he's still alive, it will kill me. I'd have nothing left.
Babe: How about I call someone?
Greenlee: You're a fool or a liar. What you told me is crap! If you love someone, you don't walk away. If you love someone, you don't give up. If you love someone deep down in your soul, you don't let them believe for one minute -- you just don't!
Babe: Greenlee, wait! I'm –
Di: We're not stopping here on the way to someplace else?
Tad: What "someplace else" did you have in mind?
Di: Well, I don't know, someplace where we could finish --
Di and Tad: Unfinished business.
Di: Yeah, which I assumed after our date would be romantic.
Tad: This is romantic. It is.
Di: Oh!
Tad: Hmm? Don't forget, both of my mothers locked us in here on the Fourth of July when we trying to rekindle the flame.
Di: It didn't work.
Tad: I'm wounded. I thought it kicked up a few sparks. Who knows how hot things are going to get before we're finished. You want romance?
Di: Hmm?
Tad: You got romance. I got all your basic props. Look, I got candles, I got flowers. I've even got something bubbly. I have no idea what the hell this is, but there's no alcohol in it.
Di: Oh! For the girl who has everything but two kidneys.
Tad: Exactly.
Di: Mm-hmm.
Tad: So why don't you handle the candles? See what I did there? "Handles the candles" -- rhyme? And I'll find a home for these.
Di: Those are pretty.
Tad: Really?
Di: Mm-hmm.
Tad: Thank you. You know, you never ended up with a favorite flower in all our time together. That used to drive me nuts. Every year I would go crazy on one of our many wedding anniversaries.
Di: Well, I'm currently off roses.
Tad: That's nice. Dixie by candlelight. God, you're beautiful.
Di: So Dixie in a pump house by the park, you know, as opposed to Dixie in a suite at the Valley Inn --
Tad: Come on, you're like a broken record.
Di: Or Dixie on a -- a beach blanket, watching the sun dip into the ocean.
Tad: I got it. I got it --
Di: Bringing up the --
Tad: The first time. Listen, if Ruth and Opal taught us anything, it's that whatever this place lacks in ambiance --
Di: Mm-hmm?
Tad: It makes up for in security.
Di: Wait a second. You sneak! You locked us in.
Tad: Yep.
Di: Any special reason why?
Tad: Because I want you to feel safe. Dixie, I need you to bring back an old friend so I can talk to her.
Di: What old friend?
Tad: Di Kirby.
[Julia hears a noise outside and sees the doorknob turning. Grabbing a baseball bat, she hides behind the door, as a key turns in the lock.]
Sam: Whoa!
Julia: Sam! Do you have any idea how close you came to becoming my late nephew? What -- why are you back here?
Sam: Uh, Tad's gone. I couldn't leave you here alone.
Julia: You shouldn't be here, you know that? There are people with guns after me.
Sam: Yeah, I know. They shot up my house. I wasn't there. I wasn't there when my dad was killed either.
Julia: That wasn't your fault.
Sam: Well, Noah's death wasn't your fault either, but you're taking it on, making sure those dirtwads pay.
Julia: I've been living with this a long time.
Sam: So have I. Father's Day -- that was a blast. Dad's birthday. Now the guy who killed my dad is dead. I can't take him on. But here, before it's too late, I can help you.
Julia: You're my sister's son. If anything happened to you --
Sam: No, no, nothing -- nothing bad is going to happen. I'm not going to do anything stupid. I am your back, I'm your bodyguard, whatever you need me to be. Just don't kick me out. I need this, Aunt Julia. I need to stand up for my family.
Kendall: I'd never hurt Greenlee. I would die first.
Zach: You'd die first? Wow. Ok. So what's the plan? What are you going to do? I know. Why don't you go to Greenlee and tell her the impossible happened? Ryan is alive and well and living without her. His choice, his decision. How do you think that'll go over? How do you think she'll live with that? Why am I asking you? That's not your problem. You don't care about that, right? It's a little collateral damage on your way to sticking it to me. Strike first and deal with the people you hurt later.
Kendall: Shut up.
Zach: You don't like hearing the truth about yourself, do you?
Kendall: Shut up!
Zach: Excuse my wife. For some reason she's a little emotional today.
[Kendall walks out on Zach.]
Singer: So many things I want to say but the words get in the way we've gotta be strong we've gotta dig deep
Zach: Damn you, Ryan.
Ryan: Hey, Jonathan. How you doing?
Erin: Jonathan? Hey. You all right?
Jonathan: My head hurts.
Erin: Well, I'll get you some aspirin.
Jonathan: No. No, don't. It doesn't -- it doesn't go away. It always hurts. It's just it's never been this bad before.
Ryan: Well, it's been -- it's been a hell of a day.
Jonathan: I want to do it, Ryan. I want to see these doctors that you've found. I just -- I want to get well, as long as it takes. I don't want -- I just want this pain to go away. I just want these voices to go away. I just want to get well.
Erin: We'll both take you. It's the right move.
Jonathan: Will you still come visit me every day?
Erin: Every day.
Ryan: Hey, you know, I'm going to get a doctor, too, Hocket. I'm going to get help, too.
Erin: Yeah, so am I.
Ryan: We're going to do this.
Jonathan: Ryan, will you -- will you take me over there to your motorcycle like you promised?
Ryan: Of course I will. Hocket, I am going to keep every promise I have ever made to you. I swear.
Di: Di Kirby was just a name I made up, someone I could be when I wasn't Dixie. I don't want to go back there.
Tad: I'm afraid you've got to, because I need some more information on your ex-boyfriend.
Di: I told you everything.
Tad: You left out a couple things.
Di: You won't let this go, because you're jealous, which is stupid and -- and unnecessary, Tad. I mean, I'm over Kevin. I only think about him when you bring him up.
Tad: I don't think that Kevin is the kind of guy you can just forget about.
Di: You don't even know him.
Tad: I don't have to. I know you. I know when you're holding something back. All you do is put up this big smokescreen every time I mention his name. You're doing it right now.
Di: Here's to unfinished business -- unfinished in your mind, not mine.
Tad: You and I have been through a lot of secrets since you came back. We're going to have to go through all of them if we're going to stand a chance. Please, whatever it is you're holding back about Kevin Sturgess, I can handle it. Trust me.
Greenlee's voice: If you love someone, you don't walk away. If you love someone, you don't give up. If you love someone deep down in your soul, you don't let them believe for one minute -- you just don't!
[As Babe recalls what Greenlee said to her, Jamie appears.]
Tad: Dixie, you can do this. Just tell me what makes Sturgess so dangerous. What is it you couldn't tell that grand jury?
Di: Unlock the door. Let me out. Take me home, Tad.
Tad: I can't, not until you level with me.
Di: I want to go home!
Tad: So does the person I'm trying to help, someone who's in a lot of danger. You have to give up what you know. Now it's a matter of life and death.
Julia: Ok, you can stay for now. But when Tad gets back, we're going to figure this out.
Sam: I'm not going anywhere. I'm taking care of you. I mean -- ooh -- no offense, but you look --
Julia: Like somebody who hasn't slept in two months?
Sam: Yeah. Listen, you go up, lie down. I'm going to make you a real meal, some brain food. I'll bring it up, ok?
Julia: You're a great guy, Sam Grey. Your dad would be really proud of you.
Kendall: Oh, good, you're home. We have to talk.
Greenlee: Kendall, tell me he wouldn't do it. Tell me Ryan would never do this to me. Tell me he wouldn't fake his own death and walk out on me.
Ryan: Are you ready?
Erin: I'll follow you in the car.
Ryan: Ok.
[Phone rings]
Erin: Hello?
Zach: Hi. I'd like to talk to Ryan Lavery, please. Put him on. I know he's there.
Ryan: Who is it?
Erin: A man, asking for you.
Ryan: Who is this?
Zach: Hi, Ryan. Long time.
Ryan: What are you doing calling me here, Slater?
Zach: There's a rumor floating around Pine Valley that you're coming back from the dead.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Amanda (to Jamie): You keep trying to scare me, I won't give you your -- surprise.
Greenlee: We can't do it, Kendall. We can't have Ryan's baby.
Zach (to Ryan): If you hurt Kendall or Greenlee again, I will hunt you down and kill you myself.
Tad (to Di): Do the right thing. Tell me what you know.
