Not much is
known of Whitney's early childhood in Smallville. In high school he is
the popular quarterback whose is dating the beautiful cheerleader
Lana Lang. He is part of the popular crowd in
high school that performs the yearly 'hazing' ritual, consisting of
hanging one student as a scarecrow in the fields. When the series
begins, the unfortunate student is Clark Kent,
who is later saved by Lex Luthor. In fact,
Clark's best friend Pete Ross joined the
school football team just to avoid this hazing. Whitney's father Jack is
very ill, and this seriously affects Whitney. Lana slowly finds herself
experiencing a change of heart, and her relationship with Whitney starts
deteriorating. Finally, Whitney's father dies of a heart condition, and
Whitney decides to follow in his dad's footsteps and join the Marines. He
and Lana share a heartfelt goodbye.
The following year, krpto-mutant Tina Geer, who had the
ability to mould her bones into resembling anyone, developed an
obsession with Lana, and transformed herself into looking like Whitney,
in order to gain Lana's trust. This did not work, and Clark saved Lana.
It was later found out that Whitney had, in fact, died in combat earlier
that year.
