  Westworld - Season 1 [4K UHD + Blu-ray]

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 11/1/17

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

This is a really great show on HBO. I record and watch it on my DVR, but it's nice to have this collection as well. I watched the original "Westworld" movie in the 1970's (as well as its sequel, "Future World," which I loved).  The show is a reboot, so it doesn't really have the same characters, just a similar setting. However, they've done a great job of making the series way better than any of the movies.

In this series, the main character is really the theme park, more than the human or robot characters. Anthony Hopkins (Robert) plays the old guy who created the Wild West theme park. He's fighting to keep control of it because it's being taken over by board of directors in the company, Delos, that owns and runs the park with him.

The characters in the theme park are called "hosts" and the paying customers are "guests."  The guests are able to do whatever they want in Westworld, with the hosts.  This includes rape, torture and murder.  The employees in the park fix the hosts when they're damaged and erase their memories.  However, some of the hosts are starting to remember things from their past years of victimization, and it messes things up in the park.

Evan Rachel Wood plays Dolores, one of the original hosts, who's supposed to be a simple country girl.  James Marsden plays a white-hat-gunslinger host who's in love with Dolores and defends her from outlaws.  Thandie Newton is Maeve, the local whorehouse madam host. Jeffrey Wright is excellent as Bernard, who programs the hosts and seems to have a real affinity for them. Ed Harris shines as the evil gunslinger guest who keeps coming back to the park, trying to solve a mystery. He's convinced that there's a maze in the park, and he wants to find the center of it.

All of the actors do a terrific job, but the story is brilliant. Nothing is what it seems. No one is who they seem to be.  The story unfolds at a good pace, and there are many secrets and shocking events. It's a riveting show.  It really blew my mind with the surprises in it. I can't wait for Season 2!

This set is really cool. It comes in a nice metal box. It comes with the usual DVD inserts that lists the episode, but it also has a booklet called "Corporate Guidebook," with many photos. It's a really nice set that not only has regular DVD and Blu-ray, but also digital and 4K UltraHD, which I guess is the latest thing. There are many features, too, so even if you have watched the series already, you can check out all of these amazing little tidbits they offer. It's well worth it.

If you know anyone who likes SciFi, or just great drama, this would make an excellent gift.
