Pioneers of Television: Season 3

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 3/10/13

This is a great set to have. I liked it a lot and plan to go back and buy the first two seasons.  This documentary focuses on different types of TV shows from the 60's and 70's. This set includes two of my favorite genres: soaps and superheroes. It also has one for "Funny Ladies" and one for "Miniseries", which I also enjoy. This whole series was very well done and any TV fan should enjoy it.

The Miniseries segment talks about the miniseries of the 70's and 80's. They really were not around before or after that time period, or at least, not in the same format.  It was great to hear the actors talk about their roles on great shoes like "Roots" and "The Thorn Birds".  They don't make too many miniseries today that take up the whole week like those did. Now if they do one, they show one episode per week, like a regular show, or they just have 3 parts. It's not like in the old days.

The segment "Funny Ladies" is mostly about Carol Burnet, Mary Tyler Moore, Lucille Ball, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, and Phyllis Diller. They really should have mentioned some of the earlier ones like Joan Davis as well. It was great to see the clips from the old shows and have the actresses that are still alive talk about them.

"Primetime Soaps" was mostly about Dallas and Dynasty, but it did also mention Peyton Place and focused a little on Knots Landing and Falcon Crest. I enjoyed that segment quite a lot, since I watched all of those shows when they aired.

"Superheroes" focuses on the old Adventures of Superman show, as well as Batman, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, and The Greatest American Hero. Again, I watched all those shows, and all of the superhero shows since.

Wonderful documentary series!!
