The Mentalist: Season 7

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/1/15

This is one of my favorite shows, and I really miss it. It's only just finished in February. It's amazing that they're able to get the DVD out so quickly nowadays.

I know a lot of people stopped watching it a few years ago. I've actually met and talked to people, some of whom thought that the Red John story went on too long, and others who thought they should have stopped the show after that. There are some who wanted Jane and Lisbon to end up together, and some who didn't. You can't please everyone all of the time! Well, they did please me. Sure, they kind of rushed the romance in the 6th season (when they weren't sure they were being canceled or not), after a long, slow build.  Sure, the Red John story could be frustrating, but they did it very well. I think it was satisfying. I just love the characters, and I'm glad we got another couple of seasons after Red John was finished. Even if sometimes the writers didn't know how to proceed. Season 6 was a transitional season. In Season 7 they concentrated on the two things: the romance between Jane and Lisbon; and having great police cases again.

The only thing I would really say is that Wayne Rigsby and Grace Van Pelt were sorely missed. The other characters were fine, but they didn't measure up. However, what happens with the new FBI character Vega is very sad and shocking, even though she wasn't my favorite character. Her relationship with both Wylie and Cho was what made us care about her death.  Although they had rushed the Jane-Lisbon romance in the 6th season, they more than made up for it in the 7th season.

If you haven't seen the first 6 seasons of the show, I would say go back and watch them first. You won't appreciate the 7th season otherwise.  Of course, watching Simon Baker as Patrick Jane is always a treat, no matter what. You couldn't make this show without him.

The DVD is pretty short of extras. There is one good feature, "Patrick Jane: An Uncommon Man" that has all of the actors talking about the character of Jane and his journey in the show. It's a good length and very enjoyable.  There are also deleted scenes from the episodes.

If you're a fan of "The Mentalist", you definitely want to have this one in your collection. It's a fantastic crime drama with many wonderful light-hearted moments and endearing characters.
