The Last Ship - The Complete Fifth Season

The Last Ship - The Complete Fifth Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 3/10/19

I haven't been a big fan of this series because even though it's a scifi show, it's very military-oriented. I'm just not into war, battles and such. I have to say, though, that this last season seemed to move a lot more slowly and wasn't as exciting as the episodes I'd previously watched.

You may think differently about it than I do, particularly if you're a fan of the other 4 seasons. Apparently, the world is at peace because of what happened in those previous seasons, but unrest is growing, and there's the threat of a possible new virus. The admiral is called in once again to save the world.

From what I've read in other reviews, the writing is very good, even though it's the last season. I will say that Eric Dane sure has aged badly since the first season. He's no longer "McSteamy."

There are only two special features, which is too bad. I'm sure the fans are just glad that they got one more season. Five seasons is quite a success on cable, especially on TNT. I know I was very glad that "Leverage" got 5 seasons (although I still think they could have kept going). I sure would have liked to have seen more of "Men of a Certain Age," which I loved.

MORE INFORMATION:

From executive producer Michael Bay (the Transformers franchise) and starring Eric Dane ("Grey's Anatomy"), the complete series box set features all 56 episodes and more than 41 hours of the epic drama, including a never-before-seen roundtable discussion.

THE COMPLETE SERIES
Arrives on Blu-ray™ and DVD March 12th,
Featuring More Than 41 Hours of Epic Drama & and a Never-Before-Seen Roundtable Discussion
Complete Fifth Season also available on Blu-ray™ and DVD March 12th
Revisit all the epic voyages of the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James when TNT’s hit series The Last Ship: The Complete Series arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on March 12. From blockbuster filmmaker and executive producer Michael Bay (Transformers franchise) and an all-star cast including Eric Dane (“Grey's Anatomy”), Bridget Regan (“Agent Carter”) and Adam Baldwin (“Firefly”), all pulse-pounding seasons are available together for the first time.
Featuring all 56 episodes of the series, the Blu-ray and DVD will include a never-before-seen roundtable discussion with show creators and Naval experts discussing the development of the series as well as the collaboration with the U.S. Navy throughout all five seasons. Other bonus content from past seasons includes behind-the-scenes featurettes, an inside look at various episodes and a 20-minute documentary showcasing how season four follows Homer’s The Odyssey with Vincent Farenga, Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature at University of Southern California.
The fifth and final season, which will also be available on Blu-Ray and DVD March 12th, takes place as the world is finally recovering from the deadly virus that devastated the population, but global unrest is still growing. Tom Chandler (Dane) has retired and his former crew have moved on, many having risen in the ranks within the Navy. Sasha Cooper (Regan), Lieutenant Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle, “Hart of Dixie”), SBS WO-N Wolf Taylor (Bren Foster, “Days of Our Lives”) and Sergeant Azima Kandie (Jodie Turner-Smith, Newness) find themselves on a covert mission in Panama, and when they are wrongly blamed for an attack on the Panamanian president, the consequences for the United States are dire. The Nathan James must fight to prevent an invasion by Latin America – and the next world war.

Based on William Brinkley's popular novel of the same name, The Last Ship chronicles a global catastrophe that nearly decimated the world's population. Due to its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James and its passengers avoided falling victim to the devastating tragedy. Now, the crew and its captain must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the only remaining survivors.

The Last Ship also stars Charles Parnell (“Pariah”), Marissa Neitling (“Leverage”), Christina Elmore (“Fruitvale Station”), Jocko Sims (“Masters of Sex”), Kevin Michael Martin (“Desperate Housewives”) and Emerson Brooks (Captain America: Winter Soldier). The series is produced by Turner's Studio T in association with Platinum Dunes, whose partners – blockbuster filmmaker Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form – serve as executive producers. Co-creators Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane also serve as executive producers, along with director Paul Holahan. Kane serves as sole showrunner for seasons four and five, having previously served alongside Steinberg for the first three seasons.
