DVD TV Show Reviews
I was amazed to find that this is a much more exciting show than I
remembered. I was probably 12 when it was on, and I watched most of the
cop/private eye shows on back then, but I never liked Kojak as much as the
others. I think it is because it was more gritty and realistic than the others,
and the lead guy is an ugly, bald, middle-aged guy that rarely smiles. My
pre-teen tastes went more for the handsome heroes of "Starsky and Hutch" or
"McMillan & Wife". Anyway, Kojak is a good show.
The acting and writing is top-notch and the show does not drag as much as
many shows from back then. The writers really knew how to create dramatic
tension. If you haven't seen the show, I really recommend you rent or buy
it. It is fun to note the actors who guest-starred on the show and became
famous later, like Harvey Keitel and James Woods. The show paved the way
for later hits like NYPD Blue and The Shield. Telly Savalas was a really
good under-rated actor who won an Emmy for his portrayal.
Unfortunately, there are no extras, which is a shame. Telly Savalas is
long-dead, but I know Kevin Dobson (his sidekick) is still around. Some
"looking-back" shorts would have been nice. Also, it would have been nice if
they had included the original pilot, the TV movie that launched the series.
I can't wait until season two comes out!
