Touched By An Angel: I Will Walk With You

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/31/15

Unlike most DVD's I've reviewed, you can't buy this one at Amazon. However, it's the series finale to the show "Touched by an Angel" and was already included in the season 9 DVD. Click on this link to buy the whole season. If you want just this movie, then click on the photo of the cover above. If you're a fan of the show, you'll probably want the whole season instead of just the one two hour movie.

On its own, this is a pretty good movie, if you don't mind the religious stuff. It's a classic good versus evil tale. It has a wonderful guest-starring cast: Patrick Duffy, David Ogden Stiers, Patty Duke, Randy Travis, Marion Ross, William Mapother and Karina Logue. There are also appearances by actors that have been regulars on the show, such as Valerie Bertinelli, Cloris Leachman, Paul Winfield, Charles Rocket and others. Of course Roma Downey stars, and we also see her co-stars John Dye and Della Reese (although not as much as I'd have liked).  A pivotal role is played by Canadian actor Scott Bairstow, who's just outstanding as a mysterious stranger. Everyone does a great job and the movie movie moves along very quickly. It seemed like a really good series finale, too.

The show is very sad, as so many of the episodes of "Touched by an Angel" are. There wouldn't be much of a show, I guess, if everything was good and people were all happy! If you've never seen "Touched by an Angel" before, Roma Downey plays an angel, Monica, who finds people in trouble and helps them find strength and wisdom in order to get through their problems (and often helps them solve the problems). It's not a subtle show. The message is clear: believe in god and he'll help you.

In this two-part movie, Monica is being reviewed (by God, I guess) to see if she should be promoted, so that she can be a mentor like Tess (Della Reese). She goes to this little town called Ascension (get it? LOL!) and finds that everyone is sad and that there are no children. I don't want to spoil it for you, but there's a big mystery as we get to know the town's residents (many of whom Monica has helped in the past).

I think that if you've never seen the show, you will still enjoy the story. It's a pretty good one. If you're not religious, you might want to skip it. However, I will definitely be watching to see where else I can find Scott Bairstow. I always liked John Dye, before and after he was on this show, and now I'm glad to find a new handsome and likable actor to follow.

There are no extras or features on the DVD. It does have closed-captioning, though. The DVD is only $10 so it's not bad for a good movie. Season 9 is $38 or more, but you do get the whole season plus whatever features it has. I never watched this show regularly because it's kind of preachy and I'm not religious. I think it's a good family show, for the most part, but this particular episode might be a bit too heavy for younger kids.
