Girl Most Likely

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 11/1/13

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fun comedy film, kind of a romantic comedy, but the romance is very low-key and not that important.

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a New York playwright, who has not lived up to her youthful dreams or promise. She really hits bottom and has to stay with her kooky mother and brother in New Jersey. That basic premise reminds me of movies like "Sweet Home Alabama". However, this movie is not really about how Imogene finds true love. It's about how she fixes her life and gets more comfortable with who she really is.

That factors gives it more weight than your average rom-com. Personally, I didn't find it to be "Laugh-out-loud" funny, but it is very charming and interesting. I loved the characters and plot.  I've never seen Wiig in anything, but she does a great job in this. She's very likable, even though her character is a little stuck-up.  Annette Bening, who's always fantastic, gives her usual performance as Wiig's mom, Zelda. Matt Dillon has a small but fascinating role as George, A.K.A. "The Bousche". Last, but not least, Darren Criss is a guy that happens to live in Zelda's house. He and Wiig become involved.  An actor I've never heard of before, Christopher Fitzgerald, plays Ralphi, Imogene's brother. Apparently he's a big Broadway actor.

This would make a great gift for anyone, but especially any women or anyone who likes intelligent movies. The DVD has some fun features, like the usual gag reel and deleted scenes. There's a "Making of" special and also the cute short film "Life in the Human Shell".  Make sure you watch that one if nothing else.

Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon and Darren Criss Join Forces In The Unpredictable Comedy about Life And Its Unexpected Turns Arriving On Blu-ray Disc and DVD November 5 From Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Available On Digital and Video On Demand October 22

Shattered dreams lead to laugh-out-loud moments in Girl Most Likely, arriving on Digital and Video on Demand October 22 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The film will be available on Blu-ray Disc (plus Digital HD UltraViolet) and DVD (plus Digital UltraViolet) two weeks later on November 5. Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) leads an all-star cast in this hilarious, warmhearted comedy about a once-promising playwright who returns home to her wildly unpredictable mother and a house full of oddballs to try and get her career – and life – back on track. The film features Golden Globe® winner Annette Bening (Best Actress in a Motion Picture, The Kids Are Alright, 2010), Matt Dillon (There’s Something About Mary), Darren Criss (TV’s “Glee”) and Bob Balaban (Moonrise Kingdom).

After her career and relationship both hit the skids, Imogene (Wiig) is forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric family, including her gambling-addicted mother (Bening) and her mom’s oddball new boyfriend (Dillon). Adding further insult to injury, her bedroom is being rented out to a pop-star impersonator (Criss). Through it all, Imogene eventually realizes that as part of her rebuilding process she must finally come to love and accept both her family along with her Jersey roots if she's ever going to be strong enough to get the hell away from them.

From the directors of American Splendor and The Nanny Diaries, Girl Most Likely arrives on Blu-ray Disc and DVD with bonus materials that consist of multiple featurettes, including a “making of,” deleted scenes and a gag reel and will be available for the suggested retail price of $24.99 and $19.98, respectively.
