This is one of the few J.J. Abrams' series that I don't love, and it's not because it's not scifi or action like most of his. It's just too slow for me. I like the actors, and the characters grow on you over time. The writing is fine except it's just too slow, which bores me. I didn't watch it back when it aired for that very reason. Now seeing the DVD's, my impression has not changed.

It's a fairly realistic show about college students, and that's fine. I'm all for realism. However, TV should be better than real life, not as boring as real life. The show has some very attractive people, and I can see why young girls might have enjoyed it at the time. It reminds me of the show "thirtysomething", which I also didn't like too much.  Nothing like watching middle-class white people sitting around, complaining, and nothing else much happens. Zzzzzzzzzzzz!  At least in season four they got a little weird and had some (sort-of) time travel.

Both DVD's have quite a few extras that fans should enjoy. Frankly, I enjoyed the features more than I did the show itself. I especially liked the "Creating Characters" panel on the season 4 disk where they talk about how they created the show and its characters. It also has Jennifer Garner from "Alias" on it!
