This is a really great show to watch. There is never a dull
moment. If you like westerns, especially modern ones that attempt to be
realistic, then you will probably like Deadwood. It does try to be authentic. It
has lots of swearing, violence, and nudity. If you are looking for heroes, you
probably won't like it so much. The show has bad guys, and really bad guys, and
the poor saps caught in the middle.
The writing, casting, and acting are outstanding. It is a really great drama if
you can stand all of the other stuff that goes along with that. If you are not
used to watch HBO or Showtime, it may shock you. The show was created by David
Milch, most famous for NYPD Blue. That was not very "blue" compared to this
show. If you enjoyed "The Sopranos", I'm sure you will love this as well. Or if
you love western movies like "Tombstone", "Unforgiven" and "The Quick and the
Dead", you will appreciate it.
Deadwood is about a western town where there is no law, no marshalls. Naturally,
lots of bad guys flock there, including famous ones like Wild Bill Hickock. Many
people come there to find gold. The town is mostly run by one man, Swearingen,
who is probably the worst of all of them.
The Blu-ray set, from what I can tell, is exactly like the previous DVD set. It
has all the same extras and features...it's just in HD. There are tons of great
extras, though, so it is well worth getting if you don't already have the other
set, or if you really really want to see it in HD. The box is very nice. It
looks like an old book.
Here's a great summary of the show from imdb.com: The town of Deadwood, South
Dakota in the weeks following the Custer massacre is a lawless sinkhole of crime
and corruption. Into this uncivilized outpost ride a disillusioned and bitter
ex-lawman, Wild Bill Hickok, and Seth Bullock, a man hoping to find a new start
for himself. Both men find themselves quickly on opposite sides of the legal and
moral fence from Al Swearengen, saloon owner, hotel operator, and incipient boss
of Deadwood. The lives of these three intertwine with many others, the
high-minded and the low-lifes who populate Deadwood in 1876.
It stars some really great actors, such as Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Keith
Carradine, and many others that you will recognize. It is a large and awesome
cast. If you get this set, you should really enjoy it for many hours to come.
