Careful What You Wish For

Careful What You Wish For

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 8/1/16

Given the title of this movie, the hero of this flick should have been a lot more "Careful!"  But he wasn't. He plunged in head first and almost drowned. This is a Summer movie that reminds me sometimes of "Body Heat."  It's not a film noir. Call it Noir Lite.

Former Pop Star Nick Jonas plays Doug, a young man about to head off to college. He and his family are having one last family vacation at a lake resort. Doug and his friend Carson work at a local watering hole. Doug is a virgin (not a very realistic plot point. and there was no reason given for it), and Carson is determined to get him laid. Instead, Doug gets involved with the sexy young woman next door (Isabel Lucas), who's married to a dangerous-seeming investment banker (Dermot Mulroney).

At first it appears to be romantic movie, although there is definitely a sense of foreboding. Then some terrible things happen, and Doug is caught up in a crime and has to fight to save himself. There are several good twists at the end. However, they definitely weaken the plot by having the "bad girl" save Doug at the end. It would have been a much better movie if Doug had died or gone to jail for her crimes.

It's an enjoyable movie, for the most part, with good characters. Paul Sorvino has a fun role as the local sheriff, and "Battlestar Galactica"'s Kandyse McClure plays an insurance investigator. Mulroney was great in his role. If you have some time on your hands, or you're a Jonas Brothers fan, I would suggest you check it out. Teens will probably love it.

Unfortunately, there are no features or extras on this DVD. That's a shame. It would have been great to learn about how it was written or planned, and about filming, etc.
