The Brady Bunch: The Complete First Season (DVD)

  Review by Suzanne  2/15/05

The Brady Bunch was one of my favorite shows when I was growing up. I was just the right age to appreciate shows like this and "The Partridge Family".  It is great to see the first season on DVD because they were all so young and cute then.  Marcia and Greg had not yet grown to be the gorgeous teens they became later.  They all still had their sixties' hairstyles and not those awful afros they got later.  Florence Henderson had a very sixties style then.  The kids did not have the far out 70's clothes yet.  It was just a nice family show, like "Family Affair".

The show was more ideal than realistic.  It did not really show what a "real" family was like, but they did try hard to have kids that were fairly real and believable, and not stereotypes.  I think that is why so many people watched it.  We all wanted to have families like that, even if they were a little hokey sometimes.  There were a few mishaps, but everything worked out in the end, and the parents were always there to give a kind and loving word.  I know my family wasn't like that!

Now, I don't usually watch this show in reruns because, well, I'm not 11 anymore.  The show's humor and writing is geared more toward children.  It is very simplistic and the jokes just aren't as funny as they were 30+ years ago.  But it is nice to have on DVD and to be able to reminisce about watching them back then.  Today's kids will probably still like it.

The DVD has a cool hologram on the front of the packaging that I enjoyed playing with.  The only feature on the set is a little behind-the-scenes commentary with creator Sherwood Schwartz and most of the actors.  It is fun to hear about how they were cast and how they started the show.
