DVD TV Show Reviews
I remember when this show first came on the air because
I had a good friend who loved it. I never watched it back then.
However, I did watch it later in reruns. For some reason they
called it "Black Sheep Squadron" instead. I enjoyed watching it quite a
bit.
I have always loved Robert Conrad, the star, since his
early days on "Wild Wild West". His acting style is minimalist
(about the opposite of William Shatner), but I always loved him because he
was so handsome and strong.
This show reminds me a bit of Hogan's Heroes, but less
funny. It is ostensibly a drama, but it has many lighter moments and
a lot of action. Conrad stars as Major Greg "Pappy Boyington", who
is the squadron-leader of a group of fighter pilots stationed on an island
in the Pacific, during World War II. Boyington was a real person and
this show is based on his adventures. The camaraderie of the group
is fun to watch. It is a very pleasant show, not too heavy, but fun
to watch. The actors are very likable.
The show was created by Stephen J. Cannell, who made a lot
of action shows in the 70's and 80's, including "Rockford Files", "the
A-Team", and "21 Jump Street". Like those shows, it is a light, fun,
show with lots of action and male bonding.
