America's Funniest Home Videos Volume 1

America's Funniest Home Videos Volume 1 (DVD)

  Review by Suzanne  8/23/05

I have to admit, I was excited when I saw that this was "Volume 1" because I thought it was from the first season of the show.  However, this is the first season of the CURRENT show with host Tom Bergeron, not the older one with Bob Saget and the people that took over from Saget. I can't imagine why they think that we don't want to see the older ones.   Are pratfalls from a decade earlier any less funny?  Or maybe it's Bob Saget's fault and he wouldn't agree to let the show go on DVD. I have no idea...

Anyway, the show is basically the same in any incarnation.  Viewers send in videos of their children, pets, friends, relatives, etc. getting hit in the groin, falling into the water, getting their head stuck somewhere, or running into things.  It really should be called "America's Funniest Home Slapstick" because that's what this show is all about.  It's not exactly highbrow humor, but that's fine.  Most of us can relate to the videos because we have done something done or seen someone we know do something stupid; we just were fortunate enough not to have it on videotape.

While the videos run, the hosts makes dumb cracks.  These are almost always lame jokes that add nothing to the video, but I guess they figure it's better to have the jokes than just music playing in the background or something.  Can you tell I am not a big fan of the show? Nothing against it, and it's plenty funny, I just prefer fiction for the most part.

There are 12 episodes on 3 disks, plus a 4th disk has the only episode--a special "300th episode" celebration where they chose the "greatest clips" from the show's history.  Frankly, I didn't find it any more or less funny than the first three disks.  Humor is so subjective, though...you may have a different opinion.

If you like this show, and many people do, than you will want to get this disk and all of the forthcoming volumes so you can enjoy the jokes again and again.
