DVD TV Show Reviews
At first I thought this was a really awful show, but it got
better after the pilot. The acting and writing improved a lot. Star Margaret Cho
seemed more relaxed (as did everyone else). The best actor was Clyde
Kusatsu, who played her father. You may not recognize the name, but you would
know this guy if you saw him because he's a very recognizable character actor.
B.D. Wong, now more famous for his role on Law & Order and many stage roles,
played her brother. It is an excellent cast. The grandmother, played by Amy
Hill, is the funniest part of the show.
The main point of a sitcom is to be funny. The show is
hit-or-miss on that level. It's too bad it couldn't have had more chance
to improve. I think it did get better, but not many people watched it at
the time. I have read before that Cho had a lot of problems with the
"suits" at the network about the show. I wish we could have seen more of her
vision rather than theirs. Her standup act is very funny.
There are many great guest-stars on the show, and the set is
worth having to see Cho, Wong, and all of the guest-stars. It is a who's
who of Asian actors, but there are many Caucasian actors as well that you will
recognize. You might also want to rent "I'm
the One That I Want", which is Cho's performance show about her experiences
making this show.
The set has two types of special features: Commentary by Cho and
Hill on select episodes, and a short feature where they look back on the show.
It's verr interesting to watch.
