A Dog's Purpose [Blu-ray] DVD cover

 A Dog's Purpose [Blu-ray]

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/10/17

I wasn't sure if I wanted to see this movie, back when I first saw the previews for it, last year when we saw "Rogue One."  I was worried that it was going to be too sad, like "Marley & Me" (a movie I will never see!). But it was a good film.

The movie follows a dog, who goes through many lives and is reincarnated each time he dies. He's voiced by Josh Gad, who you may recognize as the voice of the snowman from "Frozen."

They do a good job of showing what might be in a dog's mind as he wonders what life is all about.  Now, the dogs do die, and some of their lives are very sad. Some of them are mistreated. However, the movie is PG, so they don't go into a lot of details or show too much that's disturbing. It's not like they're going to show dog-fighting or anything.

Most of the movie is great to watch because it shows the dogs playing and having fun with the kids or adults.  Mostly we see him as this one dog, Bailey, who's beloved by the boy Ethan and his family.  Later, Bailey goes back to Ethan's home when he's an older man (played by Dennis Quaid, whom I love), even though he's a different dog. It's mostly a very fun and heartwarming movie. Sure, it has some sad scenes that might make you cry. However, it's all worth it in the end. I really enjoyed it.

The DVD has the unusual extras: Deleted Scenes, outtakes, and a couple of behind-the-scenes features that tell about making the movie. One is told from the point-of-view of the dog actors in the movie, so that was cute.
