American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson Blu-Ray
Review by Suzanne Lanoue
9/5/16 |
I watched most of this series when it aired, but it was
great to get the DVD so I could catch up. It's a very good
story, although a little bit over-the-top at times. As I
said back then when I reviewed it, I'm not thrilled about
the casting of Cuba Gooding, Jr. as O.J. O.J. was much
taller, and just bigger (he's a football player, a big guy),
and he had a much deeper voice. Gooding does a very good
job, but I think he's just completely miscast.
It's probably difficult to find someone that looks and
sounds a lot like him, though.
I thought all of the other actors did great jobs, and it
won a lot of Emmys. I've enjoyed the DVD, even though it
only has a few extras. They are very lengthy features. One
talks about the movie and how they made it, and about the
real-life event. They do say a few hyperbolic things that
are false, such as that the Internet was not around when
O.J. went on the run (it was; but not that many people were
on it yet). Or someone said that it was the first
reality show (it definitely wasn't) and that Kato Kaelin was
the first celebrity who was famous for no reason (also not
true. Ever heard of Zsa Zsa Gabor? Just to name one).
But otherwise, I enjoyed it.
The only other feature is an interactive timeline.
Interesting idea, but not really my kind of thing. I would
have liked to have seen more features. I look forward to the
next American Crime Story on FX.
